If we interviewed 100 women in the natural hair community a good chunk of them would tell us they are trying to grow their hair out. Another chunk will tell us they have that goal but have no idea how to actually meet it. In this post we want to address those of you who have hair growth goals but have no idea how to meet them. It’s one thing to have a goal but it’s a whole other thing to have a road map to get there.

Here are 6 things you must do to meet your hair growth goals:

1. You must eat healthy

Eating healthy is the heart and soul to this hair growth thing because it is the vitamins*, minerals and nutrients from our food that cause our hair to grow.

Eating green and avoiding foods that hinder your body from performing at it’s best is the first step to getting to your hair growth goals.

2. Exercise

While we are on the subject of eating healthy, we should mention that working out is critical to your hair growth because you naturally get your blood pumping carrying oxygen and the nutrients from your food and vitamins* to the scalp.

Personally I found that exercise combined with healthy all natural food (As natural as I could get anyway) gave me the best quality hair ever. My hair was naturally shiny and very moisturized! Which leads me to my next point.

3. Drink tons of water

Drinking water moisturizes your hair from the inside out, don’t believe me? Try it for one month, just focus on drinking water every day and you will notice the difference in your hair. Moisturized hair is easier to retain than dry brittle hair!

4. Practice low manipulation and protective styling

If you are already doing 1 to 3 as outlined above then your hair is already growing at a steady healthy pace so your job is to retain the length you gain.

If you are serious about hair growth you have to get serious about protective and low manipulation styling. Curly hair thrives better untouched or just touched minimally. Since you will be working out, go for styles that keep the hair protected but loose enough where you can cleanse the scalp of sweat and debris.

5. Keep your scalp healthy

Your scalp is the foundation, its where all the magic happens and in a perfect world it is very self-sufficient. It produces its own moisture called sebum that is used to nourish it’s surface and your growing hair. Some of us produce too much sebum which might cause buildup and some of us do not produce enough sebum which means we need to help a bit with products.

Reguardless of what side of the sebum spectrum you fall your job is to maintain balance. Cleanse your scalp when it needs it, use healthy oils* to help cure any scalp ailments you might have and do not hesitate to set an appointment with a dermatologist when you need professional help.

6. Nail your regimen

I mean have your regimen down to a science so that you do not have to think about it. Know when you will trim, know when you will deep condition and stay in tune on how well your regimen is working for you. If your regimen works, there is no need to experiment with other options. There are tons of regimens out there, but only one works for you. Focus on that.

Other things to consider on your growth journey, is avoiding things that impede the strand. If you want to keep retaining length then using heat, color, relaxers or other chemical treatments only break down the strand to fit the aesthetic you are looking for.

When the strand is depleted you are more susceptible to dryness, brittle hair, split ends and other small problems that can be counter productive to your hair growth goals.

Emotions you might feel throughout the process

Listen nobody is perfect, so we are bound to have moments of frustration, and impatience so it is important to be very aware of those feelings and how to combat them when they creep in.

For example, if you find yourself very frustrated and tired of your hair, it might be time for a long term protective style. Pick a style that makes you feel sexy and confident but most of all giving you a break from your hair and your hair a break from you.

On the days when you feel impatient and thinking you are not making any progress try examining your wins. Is your hair more manageable? Is your hair actually gaining length? Is your hair healthy? Do you feel healthy from head to toe? – Thinking positive will erase any negative feeling you might have towards your hair goals in that moment.

Finally, do not beat yourself up over a setback, just get a trim and move on! At the end of the day hair growth never quits on us so if you did something to cause loss of length, take solace in the fact that your hair is always growing.
