5 Ways To Bring Life Back To Your Twistouts

I don’t know about you, but lifeless twist outs have their way of creeping back into my life. I don’t know what it is. I can rock a bomb weekly two strand twist out for a good two months and then by the third they’re struggling past day 2.

These moments have me staring in the mirror crying whyyyyyy?! I’m using the same products and doing the same exact size, why are my curls coming out less defined.

Truth is, unfortunately sometimes our hair can develop a natural affinity to the products and methods we are using. Here are 5 ways to bring a little life and definition back to your typical twist out.

1. Product Switch Up

One of the easiest ways to switch things up in your styling process for a different, more defined, outcome is to switch up your products. If you are well past the product junkie stage of your life, take this moment to treat yourself by indulging in a nice long walk down the natural hair product aisle at your local beauty supply store and pick up something new.

On the contrary, you can also opt to try something that’s been sitting in your collection that you haven’t had a chance to pick up yet, or revisit an old favorite that you set aside because it was no longer working for your hair. You’ll be surprised to notice how your hair can react differently to different products that have a minor changes on the ingredient list.

2. Curl Defining Treatment

If you have noticed your curls are losing definition, your hair may be in dire need of a certain element. You can reverse this by performing a curl defining rinse or mask to bring more natural definition back into your hair.

Apple Cider Vinegar* is one of my holy grails for hair health. Doing a simple rinse with equal parts ACV and water prior to shampoo can make all the difference in the softness and shine of my hair.

Another known way to make your curls pop is the use of a bentonite clay* mask to clarify your hair. It’s something about this natural healing clay that can cleanse your hair and restore and lacking properties your strands may be missing. Do be sure to follow up with a nice heavy deep conditioner* to restore moisture and shine.

3. Spruce It Up

Another favorite tip to bringing life back to your twist outs is to spruce it up and literally switch things up a bit instead of sticking to your usual. This can be anything from parting your hair differently to adding accessories.

Do you always do the simple side part? Consider doing something as simple as parting your hair down the middle. Or try picking up a cute head band or hair pin to add a little flair.

Another way to spruce things up is to play around with difference size twists that you choose to install. Go a little smaller for added definition or a little larger for a push in volume.

For an additional added bonus, you can grab some curly clip-ins that match your hair’s natural curl pattern, texture and color and use it for volume, fullness, and/or length. The possibilities are endless!

4. Try a Different Drying Method

Something we don’t often consider is drying our twist out differently. Most naturals typically install their two strand twists on wet hair and allow it to dry overnight. Again, same outcome.

If you’re not opposed to a little heat, next time sit underneath a bonnet dryer and allow your hair to dry with the assistance of the gentle heat. I notice my curls come out so much more defined as well as a little softer with less frizz. Not to mention I can complete my styling and dry time in about 2 hrs which would normally take me a good 8!

Another option is to using a diffuser* and complete what I like to call a wash twist n’ go. You simply install your twist on damp hair, thoroughly diffuse, style and go! You’ll end up in a nice yummy area between a wash n go and a twist out and your hair will love you for it!

5. Try a 3 Strand Twist Out

Lastly, there is always the option to try something that many naturals have deemed too complicated. And this is a 3 stranded twist out. Typically when you have three strands you are completing a braid or a plait, but it is possible to do a twist out just by wrapping the strands around each other.
