3 Ways To Escape The Comparison Trap

@Stefaniefsteel

Do you ever scroll through some of your favorite natural hair inspiration Instagram pages, and can’t help but to stare at the number of gorgeous women with full voluminous fros in envy?

Or while watching your favorite YouTuber style her hair into a head full of perfect moisturized curls, do you immediately question why doesn’t your wash n’ go come out without fail like hers?

How about constantly wondering why your hair isn’t as long as your best friend’s who did the big chop at the exact same time as you?!

If you fall into any of these categories or anywhere close, you understand how it is so easy to fall into this comparison trap that often leaves us loathing the hair that grows from our own scalp.

It is so important to not give in, and though sometimes difficult, here are 3 ways to escape that comparison trap:

1. Fall back in love with your hair

The cool thing about being human, is that we all are unique and, besides identical twins, we aren’t going to look like the next person. Our hair included!

Learn to embrace this and know that your hair texture, length, grade, curl pattern is unique to you and no one else.

Once you accept this you can move forward with falling back in love with your own hair.

Try finding ways to switch up your style, or add a little color to incorporate a little flair and excitement so that when you walk past the mirror you’ll definitely take notice and feel some appreciation of your fro!

2. All products aren’t considered equal

Many fall victim to the fact that they see how a particular person’s hair looks with a certain product and then believe that it will work the exact same for themselves. Often times, this is not the case.

Know that all products are not considered equal and just because a certain cream or styler made “Tiffany’s” wash and go turn out to be amazing, doesn’t mean that it will offer the same curl definition and results for you.

There are many components that go into a product that work optimally for a specific hair type. These include porosity, as well as curl pattern and hair type.

Keep this in mind when you’re selecting a product and don’t just rely on the fact that it worked for “Tiffany”.

3. Remember they didn’t wake up like that

My last point goes especially in reference to the natural hair influencers on YouTuber and Instagram. We so often stare at a 3-5 minute video of them completing a style, or a 15sec sped up InstaStory, and then see the flawless twistout posted on their page.

As someone who once regularly post hair tutorials on YouTube, trust me, they did not “wake up like this”. I guarantee the time to complete the style was not very swiftly as it sometimes comes off in the videos. Plus 9/10 times we’re not showing the number of failed attempts we took before mastering the styles.

Learn to be patient with yourself and your hair and slowly but surely you’ll overcome and escape that comparison trap!
