You Are Not Failing If Your Hair Gets Dry!

Woman touching her curly hair looking confusedHave you ever heard the saying, ‘It is the nature of the beast’? There are times I will look at my hair and I will see single strand knots, and after spending hours 15 minutes moisturizing and ensuring my hair is properly hydrated, the following day it will feel like burnt toast with no jelly.

I could easily think, well I must have used the wrong products or maybe I did not deep condition long enough or even that if I cut my hair and start over things will change. The truth is, nothing will change my hair is naturally dry it is simply the nature of the beast.

If there is one thing you should remember in your hair journey that will take some of the edge off whether your hair is relaxed or natural, is that you are not failing at your hair care regimen if at times you notice that your hair is dry.

If your mindset is that you are doing something wrong then change it and replace it with this instead. “I am doing everything right, I just need to be very consistent’.

Be Consistent

Combating dryness is like drinking water, no matter how much water you drink today, chances are you will need water tomorrow; it doesn’t matter if you drank bottled water, used a straw or drank it out of your favorite wine glass.

Much like that how you add moisture to your hair is not as important as ensuring that adding moisture and sealing it in is a priority whether by using a set schedule or just listening to your hair daily.

A great way to get yourself on a schedule is to test your hair, after a full wash including shampoo and deep condition. Try to note when your hair feels dry, is it two days after wash day, one day or even 8 hours?

Once you have determined that then moisturize and use the period between your wash day and dry day as a scale for when you need to add moisture. Bear in mind too that depending on the season you may need to moisturize more or less often. You may find your hair gets dry quickly during a particularly harsh winter or during a dry summer.

There are times when you will need to do a full blown co-wash versus just a light spray using a concoction in a spray bottle.

If you are relaxed you might decide that after a major wash day, just one co wash during the week is enough to maintain moisture until wash day again.

If you are natural you may decide to moisturize and seal nightly depending on your hair type or environment. Either way you need to be in tune with the needs of your hair enough to make the right decision.

Moisture Is Always Water Based

We get questions all the time about dryness with lengthy descriptions of the oils* and butters* that were used to add moisture. Oils* and butters* seal in moisture they do not add moisture to your hair.

If your hair is dry and you put oil in it, you have just made a dry situation worse. Ensure that when you are adding moisture to your hair, water (aqua) is the first ingredient in your product or at least half of the base of any concoction you make yourself should be water.

Create The Right Foundation

Earlier I mentioned deep conditioning* as a great way to start out the week and really it is the best way to give your hair the large dose of moisture it needs to start a hectic week.

Even if you choose to use a protein based product for your deep condition session, the protein will actually help with moisture retention especially if you are suffering from high porosity strands.

Protein makes up the building blocks of the hair strands and as you plug any holes or correct any damaged areas you are ensuring that the moisture you add to your hair remains there along with some great sealing techniques of-course.
