8 Tips To Shave Time Off Your Weekly Hair Regimen

Smiling woman with natural hair relaxingWe have been talking about saving time a lot lately and for me it is always at the forefront of my mind on just how I can be more efficient at getting everything done but still get the same excellent results for my hair.

My weekly hair regimen could get complicated if I allow it to but because I’m a simple gal I have mastered the technique of cutting it down to a few simple steps.

Shaving time off your regimen does not mean slacking on your hair care, what it means is knowing exactly what your hair needs and ways to satisfy those needs without too many extra steps.

They say the shortest distance between two points is a straight line right? Well here are some tips that will definitely save you some time weekly and get you to your goals a lot faster.

1. Deep condition on dry hair if you don’t plan to shampoo

We call this the ultimate life saver! Why? Because deep conditioning* on dry hair means you are not hopping in and out the shower to get your conditioning done. It’s no secret that the ‘sitting with a deep conditioner* on your head’ is the most time consuming part of your weekly routine so if you can skip straight through to this part then you will be saving a huge chunk of time.

Dry deep conditioning is an effective way of adding moisture or protein to your hair mostly because dry hair will absorb more of the product than wet hair. Of course eventually you will have to revert back to your full regimen including shampoo but ever now and again a skipped shampoo won’t do you much harm.

2. Deep condition while having a steamy shower instead of sitting under a heat cap

Yet another example of expert multi tasking, especially if you have a long day ahead and you intend to take your time in the shower. Just get your hair ready to reap the benefits of the steam by slathering it in a rich conditioner before you hop into the shower.

No need to cover your hair either, the water, your conditioner and the steam from your shower will moisturize and sooth your strands and again it will mean that you don’t have to hop in and out of the shower while deep conditioning.

Oh and if you hit the steamer* regularly at the gym, you can also take advantage of the steam room there, not only is this a great way to relax after a strenuous workout but if you add some conditioner to your hair it is a great way to get a steam condition in. The point is you are finding ways to add moisture to your hair throughout the week rather that an intense four hour process on one day of the week.

A signature style is everything when you are in a pinch. Sometimes styling can get complicated but when you have a busy morning just go for the style that you can do the best and fastest to get you out of the house.

However cute a style looks, if it has 15 steps just leave in the once-in-a-while pile.

Your signature style can be a bun or something that involves a cute accessory, just make sure it is something that can be done quickly and it looks great every time you do it.

4. Cut down on maintenance. Pick products that hold your hair so you can keep your style for longer.

How many times have you gotten caught out, its 11 pm you still have not twisted your hair for the evening and you have work in the morning. How cool would it be to just have a style that lasts all week that needs no manipulation fuss or worry?

The only way to achieve this is by using a product with either a medium hold to hard hold depending on your style or preference to make your hair withstand the day to day wear throughout the week. Just pineapple or wrap to sleep at night and in the morning fluff and go.

5. Pick double duty products

Product pimpin y’all! We have talked about this before in another post. It is so important to pick products that can work overtime on your hair, that way there is only one application. Some wash out conditioners can do double duty as leave in conditioners which means that when you are rinsing just leave a little bit in and hey presto, moisturized hair!

Also consider a cleansing conditioner, these products are literally washing and conditioning your hair at the same time removing the need to shampoo all together. What’s not to like?

The point of your wash is to get moisture into your strands so if it means skipping the prepoo & shampoo and concentrating on the DC alone then that’s fine.

Don’t let fussy regimens fool you, it can be just as effective keeping things simple without all the jazz of pre pooing with some fancy concoction, shampooing, conditioning, steaming, re conditioning and finally tea rinsing. Sometimes all the extras are just a lot of fluff.

If you haven’t got the time break your regimen down to just the basics and KISS (Keep It Simple Sistah), if you need moisture then skip the shampoo and do a simple co-wash and keep it moving.

If you need intense conditioning, focus on your deep condition with heat, that’s where the bulk of your time should be spent. The point is, know what your hair needs and go directly for the gold.

7. Get creative with a variety of techniques.

Try something you would not typically do and see if it saves your time with other normal aspects of your regimen. Let me explain with an example: You might think that the oil rinsing method might just be too much jazz for your hip hop party and therefore you have never bothered trying it.

But what if you tried it and found out you could actually save time detangling, and seal your hair all in one step? Oil rinsing can allow that sort of flexibility when done correctly.

Along the same lines, if you have never tried an ACV rinse before but spend loads of time clarifying and stripping your hair just to spend an even longer time deep conditioning* it to bring it back in balance, why not clarify your hair with something less stripping like ACV?

If you strip your hair less, but still are able to clarify then you can spend just 20 minutes deep conditioning instead of the typical 40-60.

8. Do not slack on your regimen, consistency only means less work overall

Finally, keep things going as consistently as you can so that your hair can flourish while you spend your extra time on something else. If you typically co wash during the week for a moisture boost, don’t skip it because the dryer your hair gets the more obligated you are going to feel to spend more time fixing what could have been avoided earlier in the week.

If you are diligent your progress will keep you motivated and you will get better at taking care of your hair and ultimately more efficient.

Happy hair growing ladies!
