How long have you worked as a licensed cosmetologist (or equivalent in your country) and where did you study?

I’ve been licensed over 11yrs I began my studies in my hometown of Dixon Il and completed in St.Louis MO at Duvardos Academy of Hair Design where they provided me with the essential foundation to achieve my success in the field.

From there my talents began to cultivate as an intern at Jon Tomas Salon and Spa in Creve Couere MO where I was the first and only African American hair stylist at that time; it was here I studied advance color and cutting techniques along with receiving my Redken Certification.

This platform sparked my passion for hair color and the ART of COLORING in REVERSE. Throughout my career I’ve trained with the most innovative professionals sharping my skill and expanding my resume. And I still to this day continue to educate myself I will never stop being a student

What is your specialty, relaxed, natural hair, locs or anything special?

I specialize in the Art of hair coloring and corrective cutting with a emphasis on color correcting on ALL hair types and textures.

What in your opinion is the most rewarding thing about working as a hair stylist?

The most rewarding aspect for me is a building life long rapport with the individuals I service by enhancing their beauty and confidence along with networking with like-minded hair care professionals.

When you meet that customer that has not had a great experience with a previous stylist, how do you make them comfortable while in your chair?

That comfort will begin from the moment that person walks into the salon with a warm inviting smile and welcome and continues during the consultation session were we as a team discuss the challenges as well as what they love about there hair.

There’s little things I do as we’ll to increase the comfort level such as I keep the client at eye level I don’t stand over them look down at them so they don’t feel intimidated. I’m big on knowing your craft from every angle so product knowledge and the ability to relay information in a understandable matter is a must and providing clients with at home maintenance products helping them understand it’s a team effort and I will be there to assist with any issues they might have at home.

If you could change one thing about the cosmetology industry what would that be?

I wish I could desegregate the field, unfortunately the industry is still divided. There are hair shows mainly for ethnic stylist and vice versa Caucasian clients mostly go to Caucasian stylist so on an so forth even the education is divided I can’t tell u how many hair color classes I’ve attended and been the only black student.

It’s quite sad to me I have been blessed because I learned very early in my career not to limit myself and to learn every aspect of cosmetology to look pass color and do the hair and by doing so I’ve obtain a 70-75% Caucasian clientele

Where do you see yourself a few years from now, what are your goals as a stylist?

My career journey is taken me in the direction of educating I plan to implement a training program focused on the universal coloring principles that will allow for crossing of color lines with a emphasis on corrective coloring while removing the fear from the world of color .

My courses will also promote the importance of professionalism and ethic in the salon environment . I want everyone who attends to take from it a understanding of how color works I want people to be able to take the skills learned and take their business to the next level I want nothing more then to help change lives by increasing their knowledge and revenue on their career journey.

How do you stay motivated and on top of your game?

My passion and respect for this field keep me motivated. Remaining humble and focused on my career journey with the right mind-set I use vision boards, I write everything down I want to achieve and read a lot of business and motivating books.

I surround myself with like-minded business owners and get all the knowledge I can from them I keep several mentors by my side who push me and want to see me be successful. That belief in my vision and in me even if I doubt myself my mentors are there to motivate me.

I continue to educate myself everyday and most of all I pray and work towards my prayers maintaining a relationship with God

Here is a chance to sell you ‘the stylist’ and your business, tell us why we should utilize your services?

I’m Cynthia the Colour Corrector!!! I specialize in the Art of coloring in REVERSE…… On ALL hair types. As my mentor says “I’m in the business of providing CONFIDENCE and COMPLIMENTS” I just happen to do hair.
