Caring For Baby’s Natural Hair

We get so many questions about caring for baby’s hair that I thought sharing this video is not only perfect but a must! When you have your new bundle of joy, one of the things you might have the most confusion about is how to care for your baby’s hair, what to use on it and how to care for it in a way that does not harm baby or make them uncomfortable.

My son was born with a head full of hair, then he had cradle cap, then his hair fell out and then it grew back at around 11-14 months. The cycle might be confusing because we expect that the hair should remain intact, they shouldn’t have hair loss, what in the world could we be doing wrong? The answer is you might not be doing anything wrong at all, and that our little ones grow and develop so much it is just a cycle and a fast one.

Baby’s hair care should be simple, gentle and stress free. In their first weeks after making their grand debut they do not need any kind of rigorous washing and you should take the advice of your pediatrician about baby’s first bath and hair washing.

Cradle cap makes things a bit complicated, in my own experience we gently removed the flakes with a tiny comb but I was so afraid that I was removing some of his delicate hair as well. The doctor told me that the flakes had to be removed gently so coconut oil* was and still is our best friend. Using gentle cleansers as your child gets older (toddler) and coconut oil* is all you need to keep the hair soft and healthy.

I definitly identify with the fro because little kids hate getting their hair tugged and prodded so allowing them to wear a small/medium fro is absolutely fine. They do not need tight barrettes, clips or even ponytails, they just need you to care for the hair the best you can without stress.
