“3 hours wasted prepping my twist out just for this wet mess?!” “My bantu knots did not dry all the way through…now what?”

I’m sure we have all had these depressing conversations with ourselves in the mornings. We thought a style would work out and it just didnt. This is worse in the summer time because this is the time to show off our hair, its length, and versatility; Not to mention you would look awful odd with a beanie on in 100 degree weather. Oh, and lets not talk about the humidity, try completing your twist out at 9am, only to have a texturized afro by 2pm SMH.

I understand your agony and pain, I know you want to flash your luscious tresses to the world but sometimes our styles we have set the night before just do not work out the way we thought they would. When we come across this surprise, you can try to hide our hair with bonnets, scarves, hats, headbands*, or the bunny tail afro-puff but that might not be ideal for a hot summer day.

We also feel disheartened the entire day, I know I have. Well naturalistas, all of that tiring planning and sad mornings are over! I bring you the easy summer hair style for your natural hair that is the ultimate style dud saver, try the tuck and roll.

The tuck and roll can be done on long, short, kinky*, curly, or any other types of hair. You can do this on freshly washed hair, dry hair, and even a style that turned out to be a dud. Here are a few examples of how you can use this simple style.

Easy style for wash day

Wash and condition your hair with your staple products. Personally I love to use the Shea Moisture*, moisture retention shampoo along with the Shea Moisture conditioner*. Once your conditioner is washed out, air dry your hair until damp. You don’t need to blow dry your hair for this style just add your leave in conditioner* to your damp hair.

I love to use either Cantu leave in or the Shea moisture* smoothie. No favorites, I love them both! Once you have your hair all nice and moisturized, look at yourself in the mirror for a good while because you won’t be there long!

You will literally tuck and roll for 5 minutes until the style is complete. Roll the sides of your hair first upwards (towards the sides of your head) and use your bobby pins* to secure. Once you are satisfied with your sides, then roll the back of your hair upwards and pin to secure and your are done! Enjoy the rest of your day!

Maybe it isn’t wash day and its your second day and you need an easy go to style, well grab your favorite spritz and spritz your hair then add your leave-in or light cream for good measure.

I love to use water with Aloe Vera Juice* along with Cantu leave in. Once your hair is nice and moisturized, split your hair in two halves.

Starting with your good side, just roll it towards the middle and pin, and then do the same with your other good side. Basically you will have two french rolls on either side of your head.

Revive the Dud – Twist out or wash and go

When your twist out or wash and go did not go like the way you planned it, don’t fret! Since your hair is already moisturized there is no need to re-moisturize.

Repeat style one, all you need to do is roll the sides of your hair first upwards (towards the sides of your head) and use bobby pins to secure. Once you are satisfied with your sides, then roll the back of your hair upwards and pin to secure.

Yes, you have turned your dud into a rose. And you thought you had to put that hat on again tsk tsk?

Pomp and roll

Do you know the famed and celebrated singer, Janelle Monae and her signature style, the pomp and roll? What you need to do is make sure your hair is moisturized thoroughly. After that, part your hair in two sections, one on top and one on bottom.

For the bottom section, roll your hair sideways, which would look like a sideways tuck and roll, pin that section until secure. Now take the top section and pull forward until all of the hair is in your view. Now bring the ends of your hair upwards and roll loosely to your head. Pin until secure in a molded pomp, and you are done! Chic and stylish!

Hump and tuck

If you are not the “pomp” kind of naturalista, you can always go with a shorter version with the “hump and tuck.” What you need to do is make sure your hair is pretty moisturized.

After that, part your hair in two sections one on top and one on bottom. Roll and tuck the bottom section upwards to the back of your head and secure with bobby pins*. Now mold the top section upwards and tightly tuck your ends into a nice hump, then secure with bobby pins*. The Pomp above is done loosely the hump is alot tighter, but very similar techniques. Once done you are ready for the summer day!

Various styles and elegance

If you want to prep your tuck and roll the night before for a fresh style the next morning, you can add flat twists to your style.  For more variety, you can even do the tuck and roll with your braids or 2 strand twists, whether you have extensions* or your natural hair.

Style your tuck and roll with decorative bobby pins with pearls or diamonds to create a stunning look. You can also add flowers or bows to make this style very colorful for summer vacation or a casual gathering at your home.

Make the style yours! Naturalistas, don’t fret over your damp twist out and messy wash n go’s. This easy style is just the flair you need for a carefree and light-hearted summer. Have fun with this style and enjoy your hair!
