How To Do Finger Coils (Heatless Curls)

We all love the GO TO style of a head full of bouncy, springy curls. Often, we use roller sets, flexi rods*, straws, etc to achieve this look, but look no further than the easiest styling tool you could ever use: YOUR FINGERS!

Finger coils are curls that are achieved by twirling your wet hair around your index or middle finger with the support of your thumb. After letting them air dry, you will be left with soft, bouncy curls. This style is often used while transitioning to natural. Here’s what you do step by step and dont forget you are more than welcome to adjust the steps to fit you and your hair regimen.

►Start off with freshly, co-washed hair. Be sure it is detangled really well. Finger detangle if you wish.

►Section your hair into workable sections. Use ribbon ties or hair ties* with no metal.

►Starting with this first section, and section that part into two sections. Work on small pieces at once.

►Apply a good styling gel to the piece. Be sure it is saturated with the gel.

►Began to twirl starting from the root and down to the ends. Repeat on every section.

►After the coils are formed, DO NOT TOUCH.

►Let this style air dry. A diffuser* can speed up the process, but this style is heatless so put the dryer back on the shelf

►It is recommended to not do this style before bed, sleeping on the coils will cause them to become deformed.

►After they are dry, style as desired! (If you decide to separate the curls, coat your hands in oil to do so.)

►To sleep in this style, pull the coils up into a loose, high bun (pineapple method).

And there ya have it, girl! This cute, easy hairstyle can be done on any length of hair and any natural texture.
