Oh no!!! Where did that pimple come from? Why am I breaking out? What’s going on here?! Okay ladies, let’s breathe and consider some things, it might just be food allergies or may be the wrong makeup, but what if it is your hair products?

Sometimes we don’t realize just how much the products that we use on our scalp and hair can actually affect our skin. As a matter of fact you can tell that an ingredient is great if it can be used on both your hair and skin interchangeably without any issues.

Breaking out, getting pimples, and seeing blemishes on your face did not just come from you forgetting to wash your face in the mornings or eating too much chocolate. Obtaining these unflattering marks can come from just the simple use of your hair products and the routines that go with them.

For instance have you ever massaged your edges and in the process of doing so, drift off into a day dream only to feel oil running down on your forehead and the side of your face because you have lost focus? Yep, this has happened to me way too often and the oil can wreak havoc on your skin.

What about when you go to the hair salon to get your hair hooked up in that fierce style you have been longing for and your beautician starts going crazy with the oil sheen spray and does not cover your face? Imagine all that residue, from the spray all over your sensitive pores left there until the next time you wash your face.

Now I am not saying all hair products are terrible and that they need to be thrown away. Most products we use on our hair are awesome and they work very well with our tresses and skin together, we just have to make sure we read the labels to find out what is in our products.

Natural and organic oils* tend to be an awesome for your face like Argan oil* is a great anti-aging treatment or Rosehip* oil that can restore moisture to stressed skin.

On the other end of the scale synthetic oils* like mineral oil* found in many hair products can cause oily skin or clogged pores. Another example that you might come across is sodium laurel sulfate, which can not only strip your hair of everything but can strip your skin of the natural oils the skin needs for protection as well.

142018853Since we don’t plan to get rid our favorite products any time soon we have a few tips to help prevent those breakouts and pimples. It may be an extra step in your routine or it may make your regimens last a bit longer, but these tips and methods are really important in order to protect your skin from your hair products.

7 ways you can prevent blemishes and breakouts

1. Wash your hands – We touch our face constantly throughout the day so it is important that we always wash your hands thoroughly after styling our hair. It doesn’t take much time and nobody wants gel and styling products all over our hands before dinner anyway.

2. Wash your face – Speaking of washing your hands, wash your face anytime you use any hair products. For example, if you used gel or oil on your edges, sometimes you tend to get more on your skin than your hair with the products. It’s always best to wash your entire face after styling and don’t forget to moisturize.

3. Style your hair before doing your makeup – You can wrap your hair in a scarf when done or apply a stretchy hair band around your head to protect your face.

4. Keep you hair out of your face – When styling your hair, try to keep your hair out of your face. Bangs and loose hair are very chic and cute; but if you just did your wash day and have applied your products, those products have the possibility to transfer from your hair to your face (especially your forehead).

5. Change your pillow cases frequently – If you use a satin pillow case always have a few clean ones on deck so you aren’t always doing laundry.

6. Cover your hair – This is even when you have a satin pillow case, messed up styles or braids that you are planning to take out. The products in your hair will transfer to your pillow case which will create an expected and inevitable cause for your blemishes and breakouts

7. Protect your face from sprays – Unless its some refreshing rosewater meant for your skin you should always cover your face with your hand , when using hair spray or spritz, (but don’t touch). Also try not to use the spray so close to your hair, spraying 6 to 8 inches away from your hair is enough for the spray to be applied to your hair

It also helps to know if you are allergic to anything in your hair products because then you can eliminate the product all together. This really is about awareness, being fully on top of what is in your hair products while having a happy healthy hair and skin journey!
