7 Ways to Fool Proof Your Natural Hair Styles, and Make Them Perfect

The Friars Club And Friars Foundation Honors Tom CruiseHave you ever said, “I don’t do Twist Outs – they never come out right.” Nor do you do Braid Outs, or Flat Twist Outs, or any kind of “Outs”, because no matter what you do, they just don’t look as amazing as what you pictured in your head.

Listen; we have all been there, and perfecting a style isn’t easy – it takes a lot of practice and time, but some of us do not have the patience to do something 50 eleven times just to get it right. Give us a fool proof method that works, it’s that simple!

There is a way to perfect every style that you do, apart from technique, which we can’t deny will play an important role as well. Let’s assume that you do know how to do a basic braid or plait and you can twist a bit too. Here are 7 fool proof ways to ensure your hair style looks fab every time:

Start with clean hair

You don’t have to start with clean hair, but if you want to guarantee perfection, then you must cleanse your hair of all impurities. Some naturals will tell you that they get the best styles from dirty hair, but what they don’t mention is that they know exactly at what point to do what style, because they know their hair.

Dirt and grime can make things unpredictable if you are not as in tune with your hair as a seasoned veteran is. So get the shampoo, cleanse, and give yourself a blank canvas, and a real shot at it.

Condition or deep condition

Healthy hair means sexy hair in the end, so do what you need to do to ensure that your hair has maximum moisture and strength if you add protein. This allows your hair to shine naturally depending on what products you use and the strength of your strands.

Strong strands gives you that natural luster and shine that we admire so much, so what you have to figure out is how to get it for you. Maybe add a little honey* to your deep conditioner*, or a little coconut oil* for sheen.

Pick the right product combinations

Do not take the moisture before oil recommendation for granted, you must hydrate your strands so that the style can last. Pick products that have water in them to moisturize, and then use your oil to seal leaving the styler for last

Stylers are pretty cool because that’s what gives you your hold and will enhance your hair’s natural texture. Use your styler as the finishing touch.

Allow your hair to dry

This is my biggest problem, I am not patient enough to allow the hair to fully dry, so then I end up with a poofy twist out and I then turn around and blame the style. Well its not the styles fault its yours, let that bad boy dry that will ensure maximum definition.

With all that hydration, we do during deep conditioning* and adding leave ins and stylers that have water as a base, it’s no wonder our hair takes forever to dry. Be patient, let it dry or you will ruin it point blank.

Trim

Girl, if your ends are shabby, it doesn’t matter what the hec you do – it will NEVER look right. Nicely trimmed ends gives your style a clean finish.

Do not blame the style if your ends look a mess. I promise you your hair will look so much better with great trim. Your curls will pop better, and your twist outs will look amazing from root to tip.

The weather

Hey we can’t fight mother nature, and some climates are more humid than others, so girls on the humid side of the world will have twists and braids that have a little more bulk to it. Other women who have less humidity to deal with won’t have to deal with much frizz.

This is just something to bear in mind, when trying to perfect a style. In other words, sometimes it’s not really the style, but more so how your hair reacts to moisture in the air. There are frizz busters out there, but sometimes they might not be worth the struggle; it’s up to you.

Maybe it’s you

It’s easy to say that you can never get the style right no matter what you do. You have tried all of the above and nothing works, then maybe what you are seeing in the mirror is not what you would prefer to see.

The problem is, your Twist Out is your Twist Out, and you will not look like Corrine Bailey Rae at the end of it, because your hair is much different from hers.

Even though we might have natural hair in common, it doesn’t mean that all heads behave equally. Some of us will do a Braid Out and get tons of hang time, others of us will do one, and get some hang, but more width and height.

It’s just is what it is at the end of the day, so maybe you just do not like how certain styles look on you, which is perfectly ok. What styles have you perfected lately?
