Fotor1103213351This post is for my sassy silver foxes; the women that email us and say “hey what about women of a certain age?, do you have any tips for us” If you are over 50 then you have probably lived a pretty eclectic life; you are probably the woman we could sit and talk to for hours because your experience is absolutely priceless.

When you are a woman of a certain age, you might decide, oh what they hell, I’m going to just let this gray hair shine through, I am much too busy for the fuss.

We have realized that the way our moms or grandmothers think about their natural hair is much different from our daughters at 17 or even us at 30. We also know that they way they approach hair care and styling might be much different as well.

So we thought about some of the questions an older lady might have about her natural hair, you know some of the things we think is perfectly fine as you get older and some of the things you shouldn’t even worry about.

The goal is to still have fun even at your age, so here are 10 things and older woman should know about her natural hair:

1. Embrace your natural hair texture

Ladies, if you have been relaxing most of your life we can understand it being part of your life but when you get to a certain age, embracing your natural hair is probably a great if not needed chapter.

We do not know for sure but your hair might feel finer than it used to, you probably can’t even deal with the stress of relaxing on a schedule, now is the time to see what your hair can really do by getting to know the texture of your hair and fully embracing it. Embracing your texture might be the best thing you could ever do especially if you want more of a minimalist lifestyle.

2. You can get highlights

Girl, highlights are not just for 18 year olds, as a matter fact a little color adds a bit of dimension to your hair. You do not have to go too crazy just a little something to give your hair a bit of pizazz.

Often highlights are considered a style for a younger woman, but that is not always true, highlights make things more interesting and brings out features in your face.

3. Keep that infamous gray if you want to

Ladies back in the day a woman would color her gray hair so much you would wonder if they grayed at all. These days we have been noticing a trend where women are not only deciding to leave the gray alone, some woman are actually coloring their hair gray. Now this is all a matter of preference, if a box of color makes you feel good, then by all means go for it.

But what we are saying is gray is sexy, so if you are thinking about letting it shine through, we have your back 1000%

4. Hairstyles you wore at 35 might not be as flattering at 55

After 20 years that style you have had forever might not be as great as something a bit more timeless. Hair styles like bobs, or a layered haircut can stand the test of time, and they are done over and over again, year after year.

The thing about natural hair is that it is naturally timeless so if you take the plunge and have gone natural, just know that if you added a little shape you will be A-ok where style is concerned.

If you want to get something a bit trendy for your natural hair, there is nothing wrong with that, we wouldn’t expect you to rock an undercut or shaved side, but if you wanted to get sophisticated fade, send us the picture because we are sure that would be all the way fly!

5. No need to cut your hair off

We have seen many women keep their hair for as long as they live without using one pair of scissors except for regular trims. Gone are the days where if you are over 45, or over 59 and you have some understood requirement to cut your hair. We aren’t even sure who came up with that rule, because hair length is not determined by age.

On the other hand of things we have seen older women big chop and keep their hair probably less than an inch high because thats what works for them and their lifestyle.

If you are 30, 40, 50, 60 feel free to keep your long hair if that is what you like. If you want to spruce things up, add a few layers, and color as we mentioned and enjoy your hair.

6. Your hair doesn’t have to thin

You will hear that post menopausal women tend to have thin hair, but there are many who don’t as well. If there is a chance that your hair is thinning due to some underlying condition, then you must see a doctor to determine what that is.

There is no rule or scientific cause behind hair thinning based on age, it does happen though so stay close to your doctor if you discover it happening to you.

7. Find a style that keeps you young

Bobs, which we mentioned are great, bangs are also known to add a little youthfulness to your look. Find a style that flatters your face and plays up your great features.

Natural hair is pretty versatile so feel free to style it in ways that flatters you. The point is, you want to keep things simple for yourself and not worry too much about everything we might sputter out daily about our hair. Do what is best for you and your hair.
