3 Ways Your Conditioner Can Destroy Your Progress

Taren Guy“Conditioners is bae” Can I say that? Probably not, so let me translate, conditioners are the best things since slice bread for a curly hair, straight hair, any hair that needs moisture, detangling, protein and over all maintenance.

The purpose of your conditioner is to alleviate some of the stress put on our strands from shampoo and dryness. Some are also made to strengthen the hair using protein based ingredients and additives.

With that said not all conditioners are created equal and we have to be pretty savvy when it comes to picking the right ones for our hair.

Conditioners are manmade, which means that you might have ingredients in it that do not suit your hair type or even your life style. When you have the wrong one you can virtually destroy any progress you made prior to using the wrong one.

How do you know that you have the wrong conditioner?

1. Silicones/mineral oil*

Believe it or not many of us are prone to build up. Our scalps already have the job conditioning our hair with the natural production of sebum. If you are the woman that produces a lot of sebum then adding conditioners with silicones and mineral oil* will only make things worse.

Build up is what causes dandruff and other scalp irritations so avoiding it at all costs should be your top priority. If you do not like silicones or mineral oil, make sure to check the ingredients on your conditioner bottle to ensure that your product is free of these things and as ‘natural’ as possible.

2. Protein conditioner for low porosity hair

Low porosity strands have a hard time letting moisture in because the cuticle layers lay very flat and close together. Protein adds to this issue often causing your hair to feel hard and dry because the layers literally shut out moisture.

Will you ever use protein? Of course you will but you have to know how often to use it and how to use it. Low porosity ladies must use heat to deep condition so that the layers on the strand can lift and allow moisture into the hair.

3. Over moisturizing hair

In this case you might have the right conditioner but you might use it way too often without the proper balance of protein.

Over conditioning can lead to weak hair that feels and looks like mush. To combat this, get a protein treatment in to add some back bone to your strands.

Other issues include conditioners with no slip that cause tangles, conditioners that are too runny that do not suit your taste, or conditioners that are way too thick.
