Could Your Anxiety Be The Cause of Your Dry Scalp?

Natural-hair-problems-3Bad nerves and dry scalp; could the two possibly be affiliated with one another? Its an interesting concept and one that has been found to be true even though research still needs to be done.

The idea proposed is that the very feeling of anxiety produces sweat and the sweat then removes your moisture from your scalp. When moisture leaves the scalp, it becomes dry and causes dandruff and itchiness.

Not to mention the more you scratch, the more it feeds your anxiety which can be a vicious cycle which needs to be broken.

According to the Calm Clinic Website, when the chemicals leave your body during anxiety or stress one of the physical symptoms is dry skin and scalp.

Here is what they claim:

Research into why anxiety causes itchy scalp isn’t clear. Most studies seem to indicate that anxiety and stress don’t cause itchy scalp directly. Rather, the person is more likely to have dandruff or a natural and otherwise harmless scalp condition, and their scalp condition is made worse by stress.

Anxiety can also have a severe effect on your hormones and damage your organs, and your skin is your body’s largest organ, so the idea that anxiety can lead to scalp itch is not an unusual one.

Treatment

If you have discovered that anxiety is in fact causing your dry scalp then you do have to treat your scalp but deal with your anxiety as well.

You must choose the right shampoo that contains the right active, dandruff-fighting ingredient. If the over-the-counter dandruff shampoos do not improve your scalp, you must see your doctor or dermatologist to get a stronger shampoo.

Anti-anxiety activities are a great solution too. Try Yoga, some slow breathing, and exercise but if you have a severe case of anxiety or panic attacks, seek professional help or get on medication.
