5 Tips for Staying Motivated During Your Natural Hair Journey

happy black womanSo you’ve made the decision to “go Natural!” Whether you decided to big chop or you’re transitioning, the beginning stages of your natural hair journey will be LONG.

Tough for some and a bit easier for others. You look at photos on instagram or pinterest and you’re so excited in the beginning and just want your big curly fro!

However, months past and you feel like your twa or new growth isn’t anything to brag about. So what’s the trick for staying motivated and not giving up?! Well here is 5 tips that may help..

1. Don’t forget why you started

You took the step towards natural for a reason. Why? Recount the exact moment you did and use that as motivation. Was it to embrace the way your hair naturally grows from your scalp?

Were relaxers causing damage to your hair? Whatever the case may be, hold firm to that original decision. You took a great leap and no matter where you are in your journey you’ve come too far to give up now!

2. Switch it up

It’s so easy to get stuck in a routine. Wash day on Sunday. Twist out. Co wash on Wednesday. Twist out. Repeat. This can get old! There are so many different styles to do with natural hair no matter the length.

Watch a Youtube hair tutorial video and learn a new method! Try a wash n go. Try a braid out. Even if your hair is too short to really style, spice it up with accessories such as hats or headbands*. Or try incorporating color! The possibilities are endless!

3. Talk about your frustrations

Vent! Do you have curl friends? Talk about your frustrations with them. I’m sure they can offer tips and motivation. Also there are endless forums and online resources to get advice from such as the Black Hair Information forum.

If you’re concerned about your hair not growing maybe you should do a little more research in the community. Maybe the products you’re using do not have the greatest ingredients. By talking about your frustrations and taking steps towards answers you can gain new information and make your journey more worthwhile.

4. Protective styling

Sometimes when we’re frustrated with our hair it’s best to just leave it alone. If you’re mad at something you most likely will not take care of it in the best way.

Here’s where protective styles can come into play. Give your hair a break and get box braids or havana twists, for example, and revisit in 2 months. I can almost guarantee the break you give each other will be beneficial!

5. Get re-inspired

Remember those photos you pinned on pinterest or natural hair pages you liked on instagram in the beginning? Revisit those.

Remember that all hair is different but these are easy sources of inspiration to take in and keep you motivated during your journey. Don’t give up. We’re in this together!
