Last week we tackled mini braids, we discussed the pros and the cons and how beneficial they are for women who want to give their hair a break for awhile.

If you have not read that post then click here. This week we want to focus on mini twists which like mini braids are also an awesome protective style. There is no denying that a mini twist style is one of the most gorgeous protective hairstyles you can wear at any given time. They can be rocked during all occasions, from the ballroom to the beach and are sometimes the go to styles for women who may not like doing mini braids.

Mini twists are very versatile and can be rocked by ladies with all lengths and hair types. If you are curious about rocking mini twists as a hairstyle but aren’t quite sure about what you may be getting into, check out the 8 pros and cons of wearing mini twists that we have listed below!

Pros

Creates a fuller look

Mini twists are a great option for those of us with little density because they create the illusion of voluminous hair. Why? This is due to the smaller twists resembling loose hair and the fact that even though your twists stretch your hair there is still some shrinkage with them.

As we all know, for most of us, our loose hair can showcase super volume but can also mean more upkeep. With mini twists you can get the volume and low manipulation all in one.

Less time to install

For most of us, mini twists can take a shorter amount of time to install than mini braids. I said most of us because there are some women that have stated that mini braids actually takes them a SHORTER amount of time to install than mini twists.

Most women state that it takes them between 1-3 hours to install mini twists (this of course depends on the size of your twists and or the density and length of your hair).  I know some of y’all may be saying “This isn’t a short period of time!” but compared to the 4-12 hours that it can take to install mini braids, these can be a heaven sent.

Easy removal

Compared to the removal of mini braids, mini twists can take little to no time to remove. This removal time can last between 30 mins-2 hours. We would suggest using some oil to coat your fingers and removing your twists being as generous as you would like to be cause the oil can act as a great pre poo.

mini twistsProvides plenty of styling versatility

One great thing about mini twists is the amount of hairstyles you can can do with them. Besides wearing them with a side part or pulled back, you can also do many hairstyles that you would do with your loose hair such as halo braids, updos, and even bantu knot and perm rod curls.

Cons

Can tangle easily depending on how often they are washed

Depending on who we are as individuals, the amount of times that we wash our hair can range from daily to once a month. With mini twists, it is a must that you cut down on washing if you are a frequent washer.

For example, if you want to stretch your twists for 2 weeks then washing once during this time frame the maximum amount of times that you can wash your hair if you want to prevent extreme tangling.

Lasts for a shorter period of time

Even without frequent washing, the tangling of mini twists can still occur. This can be due to their ability to shrink more and the minimal amount of tautness that mini twists (or all twists for that matter) have.

With that said, its usually not a good idea to wear twists past the 4 week mark  if you do not want to deal with tangles. For the ladies that are looking for a 6 week low manipulation/ protective style then mini twists may not be for you.

Shows length of hair a lot less than mini braids

I know that many of us natural ladies at times love to show off our length. Unfortunately, while your hair would have more stretch than it would with a wash n go, I wouldn’t necessarily say that mini twists would be a top choice for showing length especially if you are trying to show your length without heat.

Frizz can occur

I may be in the minority here, but I adore my frizz. However, I know that many women may not. With mini twists, frizz can arrive much sooner than one would want.

This is even worse if you are a daily spritzer, so if you like frizz free hairstyles, this may not be the hairstyle for you.
