hair shedding

Your hair is falling out more and more every day — what can you do to stop it? Whatever remedies and products you come across, surely, you want it to work as quickly as possible. No one has time for slow reacting regimens that could leave us with a bald spot to regrow.

That’s why I did some research and found some remedies that you can do yourself at home that can help you to gain control over your hair fall right away. These are all-natural and are simple to do, so there’s no excuse!

What’s causing your hair fall?

As always, I have to preach the importance of finding the root of a problem and not just covering it up. It doesn’t matter how thorough and long-term your remedies are. If you’re not eliminating what’s causing your hair fall, then you will continue to battle it for many, many years.

The common culprits for hair fall include:

Changes in your hormones, such as when you go through menopause or after giving birth. It can also be linked to thyroid problems, prolonged illness, PCOS, vitamin deficiencies and prescription meds.

Not getting sufficient nutrition is also a factor which results in hairfall. It’s important that you intake lots of vitamins* and minerals, so that your body can have the vitality to continue producing new hair growth. You may also notice issues, such as dandruff or excessive dry skin.

You’re getting older. As you age, your hair starts to thin out because the amount of nutrients your body absorbs decreases. This is similar to having vitamin deficiencies.

You can combat this by increasing your intake of nutrition through smoothies that contain herbs like moringa, seaweeds and baobab. Iron is also very important for delivering the nutrients throughout your body, so increase that as well!

Treating your hair fall

Hopefully, you’re able to pinpoint what’s causing your excessive hair shedding. Once you do, you can focus on the symptom — baldness. Here’s a list of remedies and ingredients you can use to help gain control:

Aloe vera: This is high in vitamin E* and is excellent for healing the skin. Take the gel of an aloe vera plant (or buy the organic aloe gel online) and apply it to your scalp. Massage it in and allow it to sit for a couple of hours. Then rinse your hair with lukewarm water.

If you have any dryness or dandruff, it will help with that. Applications done twice a week is all you need. For an extra boost, I recommend combining aloe with castor oil*.

Amla: This is what Indian women use to keep their hair thick, long and luscious. Mix together dried amla and boil it together with coconut oil*. Once it turns black, massage this into your scalp. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Once a week treatments should be enough.

coconut-milkCoconut milk: The milk from this fruit is very nourishing for your tissues, making it ideal for hair issues. Take organic 100% coconut milk and massage it into your scalp. Do this 1-2 times weekly.

Hair pack: There are different ones available online or you can make your own. The mix I prefer includes neem, shikakai*, amla, brahmi and bhringaraj combined with aloe vera gel*. Use the paste on your scalp and hair and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes before rinsing it out. Doing this 2-3 times monthly is sufficient.

Massage your scalp often: This helps to stimulate your scalp, bringing more blood circulation. This helps with hair growth. It’s a good idea to include warm oils during your scalp massages, such as moringa, coconut, olive or amla.

Neem treatment: Speaking of neem, you can use the leaves of the plant as a treatment for your hair and scalp. It helps to prevent dandruff. Boil the leaves like you would tea. Once the quantity of water is reduced by half, allow it to cool, then rinse your hair with it. Do this once weekly.

Use herbal shampoos: Even the supposedly natural shampoos you find on the market today can be harsh. Resort to herbal shampoos that are made with ingredients like shikakai*, reetha, amla and rosemary.

What not to do to prevent hair fall

Sometimes, we can be our hair’s worst enemy. If you notice yourself doing these things, it’s time to stop because it could be causing your hair fall!

Not drinking enough water: Staying hydrated is very important for the health of your scalp and hair.

Putting pressure on your hair: If you wear tight ponytails, scarves or weaves, it’s time for a change.

Drinking too much caffeine: I say stay far away from the stuff, but if you can’t, try reducing your intake drastically. Try replacing it with teas that are caffeine-free.

Allowing residue buildup: If you wear mousse, gel, butters and serums, don’t go too long without washing. This can lead to dandruff and clogging of the pores, which prevents growth and promotes hair fall.

These are just some of the things you can do to help get control over your hair fall issues. What are you currently doing about your excess shedding?
