I know, I know – you may or may not have cringed when you first read the title of this article. The truth is that a lot of us curly girls are against cutting or trimming our natural hair.

Even though it may seem like it’s counterproductive, trimming natural hair frequently is one of the ways to retain health and length.

There’s no point to growing your hair long if it looks crazy or continues to snap off. If you are new to being natural or if you don’t have a set trimming regimen together yet, here are three ways to know that it’s time for a trim.

Hard to detangle

Have you ever tried to brush through your ends and it seems like you can’t get the comb all the way through to the bottom with no problem?

That may mean that it’s time for a trim. If there are many knots and split ends in your hair, detangling can become a huge chore. Trim your ends if they seem to be extra bushy or hard to manage.

Thin, piecey ends

Another sign that it’s time for a trim is if your hair looks thin, especially towards the ends. You may notice that certain styles (like twist outs, braid outs, etc) don’t look neat and uniform near the ends. Beware of ‘see through’ ends- which may be long strands, although you can see through to the other side.

Excess breakage

If you haven’t trimmed your hair in a while and notice that you have more breakage than usual, that may mean that you should trim your hair.

Split ends and knots can tangle and be hard to work through. As a result, we may find ourselves detangling too harshly and ripping out more hair than necessary. A fresh trim can mean neat ends and less damage.

To put it simply, we all need to trim our hair. Some may need more trims than others, and at different times. It’s important to see the signs of needing a trim, so that we can care for our hair accordingly. Consistent trims are an important part to our hair regimens. Don’t forget to snip!
