5 Tips To Add More Moisture to Your Hair Regimen

Wash and goMoisture is a key ingredient to hair health. Water is the leading way to add moisture to pretty much anything. I’m sure we’ve all heard this a TON of times.

Even so, we may sometimes limit ourselves to how we take in water, and this blocks us from truly benefitting from it. If you’ve been noticing that your hair is dry, dull, brittle, or just not retaining length, that can be because you haven’t been adding enough moisture.

Below are five tips to help you add more water into your every day life to have the healthiest hair possible.

Drinking

This may be obvious, but good health starts from within. The fact is, if you aren’t drinking enough water then your hair just isn’t going to grow as much as it can, plain and simple.

It’s recommended that we drink at least eight glasses of water a day. If you’re not really a water drinker, I suggest downloading an app to help you keep on track daily.

If you have an iPhone, I recommend the Waterlogged app. You can input your weight and it will tell you the amount of water you should drink. You can also get reminders throughout the day.

If you want to go the extra mile, try out fruit infused water – it gives your water a little extra taste and makes it easier to get in those eight glasses.

Grab your favorite fruit (strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, kiwi, etc) and add them to a pitcher of water. Place it in the fridge for at least an hour; the longer it sits, the more flavor you’ll taste.

Washing

Again, this is probably self explanatory. We should all know that we have to wash our hair. Depending on your lifestyle and hair type, you may have a certain number of times that you wash your hair a week.

Whether washing or co washing, adding water to your hair will definitely help you bring back lifeless curls and old hairstyles. I try to wash my hair twice a week, once with shampoo and again with a cleansing conditioner.

When washing, make sure you don’t use a product that will strip your hair of its natural oils*. Your hair shouldn’t feel dried out or stringy while you’re still in the shower. Use a moisturizing shampoo or black soap to cleanse your hair without drying it out.

shower headRinsing

I don’t know about you, but since I’ve been natural I have not been a stranger to rinsing my hair! Unless you have a style that you don’t want to redo, rinsing natural hair is another way to refresh and add moisture.

This can mean simply standing in the shower and letting your hair get wet with cool water. It’s better to rinse with cool water to prevent frizz and keep the follicles sealed.

To lock in that moisture, always follow up by sealing your hair with an oil Coconut*, jojoba*, olive*, avocado, or castor oils* are all great depending on the thickness of your hair.

Spritzing

Spritzing is for the times where you may want to refresh your curls while still keeping definition. There are plenty of light weight, water based leave in conditioners and spritzes out there for that purpose.

You can also make your own spritz/ refresher spray at home. Simply start with water and a spray bottle. You can add extra ingredients like oils* or leave in conditioners for added hair benefits.

To preserve your style, lightly mist your hair with the water or spray. Don’t use too much, otherwise you risk losing some form. Also, make sure to change the water in your spray bottle often, especially if you don’t finish it all. Old water that sits too long can start to be more trouble than it’s worth.

GHE

What is the GHE? The GHE, also known as the Greenhouse Effect, is another method of adding moisture and water to natural hair. All you need are a spray bottle and a shower cap*.

Lightly mist your hair before bed and put on your shower cap*. Again, don’t spray too much, just use enough to dampen your hair.

While you sleep, the heat from the shower cap will mix with the water and saturate your hair. Instant moisture boost, and you do it in your sleep! Ideally, I try to do this once a week. I apply leave in conditioner* and oil as well, and the next morning I apply the styler for a quick wash n go. This is also a great time saver.

Remember that while adding moisture in your hair is important, you don’t want to add too much. Over moisturizing is real.

While you want your hair to be soft and shiny, you don’t want it to feel too soft, limp, or stringy. Find the right balance of moisture and protein in your regimen to keep your hair at optimal health.

By following these tips and making small changes, you may notice the difference in your hair sooner than you think!
