Thinking About A Flat Iron? - How To Maintain It for 14 Days Or Longer

straight hairAre you thinking about straightening your hair? Aren’t we all? Sometimes we get to the point where we are sort of tired of rocking our curls and want a two week or more break with something slightly different.

Using heat is still taboo for naturals but not as taboo as it used to be. Many of us are breaking out the curling wands*, and flat irons* and just having fun with our hair.

We all know that heat protectant* is important and we are very aware that using protein before and after flat ironing is important as well.

The other day I got a question about maintaining my heat styles for two weeks at a time. I go to the salon if I ever need my heat fix because I just do not have the patience and my flat iron* needs an upgrade.

If you want to maintain your heat style for two weeks or more here are my simple suggestions:

Stay away from wet product

If you want your curls to come back then water based products are the best things to use to accomplish that. To keep your hair straight, you do not want to use anything waterbased for moisture.

What you need to do is deep condition your hair well before you flat iron* so that your strands can maintain during your two week stint.

You can add a little oil if you would like, but that is it.

Wrap your hair

In the beginning it is easy to simply wrap your hair all week long for the first week. Your hair will remain pretty stretched and flat with nightly maintenance.

Pin curl

Pin curls are comfortable to sleep on and easy to do every night as an alternative to wrapping. I prefer pin curls because it tucks the ends, keeps them straight and the curls help to maintain the health of the style.

Flexi rods*

Towards the end of my two week stint, I tend to use perm rods to help with keeping the style fresh. Your hair will naturally start to puff up as it gets in contact with moisture you just cannot avoid. Using a tool like Flexi rods* helps to camouflage any areas that are not as straight as they used to be when you first flat ironed.
