Today'S full resumption of face-to-face classes is a turning point for the education sector, but it is dogged by a recurring issue. A client and family is demanding us answers. After a student at a high school in the parish was barred from in-person classes because of his hair. Herman green has the details. Diane mcloone is a mother in distress. She says her. 14 year old son has been a student at the central high school in clarendon since 2019. However, since 2020, his classes have been online because of kovite 19. that changed in january when he attended physical school for the first time in years, but his hair became a problem when he went to school the principal sent him home because of his ear right. I tried to find out what is the problem. They said you have to eat a trim or get a religion later getting a religion letter. It'S not easy. I got a letter from a jp and the jp letter not acceptable. She is upset arguing the family is rastafarian. I am an indian, but his father is a rastafarian all i miss on them a rasta, but they don't lock their hair. I roped his ear and i tum it because then already first yet so i roped is the ear and i tum it right so we're in from basic primary to secondary no may have a problem with him. On monday, we spoke with central high principal salevit ingram, who insists his decision is based on the rules of the school. The students have not um presented to us. Any facts to show is really just group and of such you would have presented a letter from the doctor to say that he chooses not to trim his head for no medical reason whatsoever. He further contends that, despite probing, the school has received no proof that the student is a rastafarian. I'M at a. I had a discussion with the young man just to find out whether or not he would have been of the faith that he claims that he is. He said he would have never visited the church. He has never had any interaction with any group whatsoever. He would have grown his hair over the period and of such. He is asking for permission to take the the here as it is to be a a student here with all schools going back to face-to-face classes. Miss mcloone says she's, worried and so is her son. It'S about him because guess what school opened from january, we can't go to school guys supposed to go to school wednesday and friday. Only thing you have to be is on online. Until i got a religion letter school will be reopening tuesday coming. I don't get a religion letter as yet are we going to go and if i don't send him what they're going to take me as a negligent mother, the family is calling for the education ministries intervention, so their son can continue his education, herman, green tvj news.

Genrose brown: Time for schools to focus on children's education and stop from majoring over the minor.

Beverly Alexander: I still can't belive in this modern times jamaica and jamaicans still living in the dark ages

I❤️jamaica: Since the birth of this country, we have been dealing with this foolishness. Why must this mother have to go through this nonsense of getting a letter for her child to go to school. As long as his hair is clean then he should be allowed to go to school.

Shereda Allen: The level of hypocrisy in Jamaica when it comes to people being a rasta.Shame on the government for not passing a bill to allow these children to learn freely without being discriminated. That little boy could be the Bob Marley.Shame on the government.I hate when they do this to the kids.Jamaica is still backwards to date.Shake my head

lancelot wilson: This country is going backward morally, ethically and culturally. I attended a prominent Roman Catholic high school and the school administrators didn't have a problem with students wearing locks.

Shontavia Green: I guarantee if his hair was Caucasian there would be no issue. Most of us as Jamaicans love to discriminate amongst our own. I personally see no issue if the child decides to grow his hair whether at the beginning or ending of the school term. The fact that it is well kept makes it so much better. The reasoning the principal gave makes no sense to me. There is much more to be concerned about than a child deciding they want to grow there hair. Do better.

tash cooking with the kids: They don't put this amount of time in ensuring that the children are learning

jayteez: Open the school rules, in America you can wear your hair anyway you want

Mark Barchan: High levels of discrimination...these school administrations not showing any form of cultural sensitivity

k love: What is really going on today in Jamaica . Jamaica love follow behind other countries too much. Stop descrimate against against your own people. The kids are there to learn not to do hair dressing

Leonie Dawes: Too much barbaric law in Jamaica

Nello Bella: Cant believe these bull sh**t still happening, leave the kids let them learn. Focus on imparting knowledge.

Karen Miller: Why is a child hair still a issue in Jamaica? Why does a Principal need a letter stating the child religion, I am sure Christians are not asked to produce a letter stating their affiliation. This needs to stop. When will we be enlighten. Hiding under rules and regulation to punish a child. The only rule that makes sense is making sure every child is treated fair and equitably. Reading this a second time his hair is covered, what is the issue with his hair? Does that stop him from learning?

Dr. Cecil Wright: Are you guys serious? After a pandemic and the best you can do is send a student home for not having his hair groomed?

Chrisss 'Ras' Harrison: Questions I'd like to ask, has he been wearing this hair to school before now? Why would the school take this position if they knew he is rastafarian

Sasha Ferguson: Letter from the doctor weh dem nuh gweh

Kadian Praiser: Everything is a problem out here in the world.

Farmer Bee: "Would have" clearly explains the capacity of "Proncie"

Michelle Feurtado: The principal is say he is going by the school rules. The principal need to show the policy regards the decision on the child not being allow to attend school due to his/ her hair.

Constantine Jones: I'd like to know what his hairstyle was before covid set in base on what the mother is saying all her children are rastafarians this matter needs to be settled amicably

Lady JoJo: this is unacceptable from the school man can wear his hair how him want as can girl

Christopher Smith: This needs to be addressed frm the top. Some schools allow, some agree etc too much conflicting views. But rules are rules until it's addressed frm the top. There is no way around that no matter how cook up the story is. The school have it's rules and that's that. We too damn indiscipline! Follow the rules until things change.

Chen Nicole: its ok for a girl to wear a low cut hair style, but not ok for a male to grow his own hair kmft

JordonJBMc: It really hurts to see that my country is not advancing,we are still discriminating our own people, these so called rules are steeped in anti blackness so idk why unu a defend that. These so called rules don’t exist in most colleges and universities in Jamaica so what’s the point in keeping these rules in primary and high school

Bridgette Shaw: There are two standard in Jamaica they love bod Marley but fight against the realign shame on Jamaica for this double standards. Rasta is recognise World wide, but not in Jamaica. The Rasta's needs to start their own school and I'm sure those kids will be well rounded in their studies, and remember the school fees being paid to these schools I bet they are not returning these parents the school fee that these schools took at the beginning of the school year.

Marshall Bloom: Ministry of education need to adjust the situation, hair don't have anything to do with learning, let him remain in school

Tranie Samuel: High School God Bless you

Wayne A White: If he's a practicing rastafarian then he should have no difficulties in getting a letter. On the other hand ✋if I were the administrator I'd caution ⚠️the child to just make sure his hair is properly groomed and let him go to his classes.

K. Gordon-j: These comments on here trouble me greatly. I guess every school rule that governs behaviour should be thrown out because this is 2022 and is not an issue to learning. Like girls needing to wear their skirts at a certain length, that rule must be done away with right? Cause it has nothing to do with learning. Lord help us!

Sonya Brown: I have a 13 years old son in Amercia when he was going to schòl in Ja his hair would be about a half an inch in hight and the teachers /vice principal always have a problem with it now he's in the US for 3 years and has never cut his hair and the principal and teacher over there doesnt have a problem with it

Angella Thompson: A time fi unuh left the children them let them learn in peace and stop focus on foolishness the real problem is crime and poverty in our little island come mek wi reason bout that government of Jamaica

Rococo Chocolate: At here at work they would not send you home it’s discrimination all you have to do clip it up

Evrald Mclean: Principals must remember they are not owners of schools this should be a ministry of education issues the government of jamaica need to fixed this right across all schools Principal keep quiet

hamil73 Brenda: The school can let him do online in the meantime until the issue is resolve. His education should not suffer in no way. Personally I think a lock hair should not stop a child from school. Doesn't it define us as a Jamaican ? Religion or not....

Monica Roberts: Stupidity is so rampant in Jamaica, as long as they are learning why are they worrying about hair, two years out of school with covid killing out the world and they talking about hair, Jamaica this is 2022

KAYZIA COUTURE CLOTHING: Vote out there tow party jlpnp and vote in UIC FOR REAL CHANGE IN JAMAICA ALL THESE SLAVE LAW ON THE BOOKS NEED TO GO SMH

Krystal Daley: Jamaica is one of the few countries that focuses on foolishness. Why are they denying this young man's education because of hairstyle? Also why do he have to prove which religion he follows. This is just plain Just disgusting!

Hyacinth Sanderson: It's full time now rastafarian build a school.Rules are everywhere, even rasta have rules .

Waithabit Lection: Is this 2022?

dela vago: Enough is enough Jamaica. Why schools below university doing this? Don't these people know that in university which is a level of schooling you can just grow your hair

Festus Walker: I wonder what the school would have said if the boy was bob marleys grandson..

Mine only Blessings: Principal Says a letter from the doctor Me: Dwl

Transmission Doctor: This is Sad again our own people.. and these are the same ones who teaches other history in our school except ours… smh!!!! When will we stop doing this to our own. My heart is bleeding because again we are still colonized.

Live From Planet Earth:

Ethlyn Christie: Just conform to school rules or send him elsewhere

Kingston Street: Hair has nothing to do with learning

876 Plug: What hair of to do with learning ‍♂️

TR R: "Out of many one people" Really? ‍♀️

Peggy Peart: What is really going on in Jamaica I am very much disappointed with what is going on in Jamaica so what Rasta a Rasta this country is going backward sorry to say Rasta nuh have no rights in Jamaica what happen to all the teachers who locks their hair Lawyers Doctors and you people want to deprived this young man of his education because of his hair wake up Jamaica too long too long

Marshall Bloom: I don't see anything with him going to school is still hair

KrptoKing: Ja we still doing this in big big 2022... SMH

ZeeH: Why focus on students hair and not on their education that had been damaged drastically by lockdown due to COVID. It's time rural schools get a hold of themselves many corporate area school boys hair are in fashion design going to school and it is ok. Schools should be pressing the pedal for teaching and learning to help bridge the gap that had broken.

EmpressPaula-Mae Rehcra: This is f..king foolishness. Our own people is the greatest oppressors to us.

Opal Smith: Good Lord!!

DjOMARi: Unuh ago stop a child from learn... just bcaz of his hair....? How stupid unuh be....?

Juda Mom: In this day and age (2022 ) hair shouldn't be a problem as long as it is properly groom. Thats just my OPINION !. The illiterate principle said he should get a letter from a doctor...why? Its not a medical condition he's faced with. I think the government of Jamaica need to address the "hair" situation for schools. Its annoying at this point. I dont think a child hair should prevent he/she from obtaining an education. The focus should be educating the kids.

Empress Jade Simeon Ellis: I grew up in a Rastafarian household snd attended Orthodox Church. This is outrageous and a slave mentality goping backwards from Bad Friday in 1963 Coral Gardens massacre brtalising Rasta's. Where is the Uproar from the Rastafarian Communities. Children have a Right to Education, the Family need to contact The United Nations Convention on the Rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities. Hair does not prevent learning and can be presented neatly. Disgraceful I hope and Pray the Family gets Justice

Tranie Samuel: Anytime worries about hair just born boy him a become a Rastafari who would be Respectful Honestly Good Manner

Carneta Samuels: That dam principal need to shut his dam mouth .

jayteez: Been a wait on this

Basil Byfield: Jamaica's government, people, teachers, everyone have now misplaced their priorities. They now seem to be a bunch of nicompoes. I remember in the late 70's in high school, we had two students with dreadlock going to my school. I never heard of these issues. This is 2022. Can we focus on fixing the crime in our country ?

Sophia Gibson: What somebody hair has to do with learning

jamhombre: This needs to stop! Why is Jamaica regressing? When I was in primary school which is eons ago, there were 2 Rastafarian children at my school and they were well accepted then(they wore tams). You're telling me that in 2022 it is now forbidden.

lighthouse: Jamaicans are going to accept sea people before they accept themselves and what they look like. It don't take a much to see that these rules were supposed to be done away with after slavery. How can you deny kids education because they don't want to cut their hair? You guys don't care what happens to his future. Let the kids be kids, let them cut it whenever they feel like.

Corlette Anderson: What is wrong with these people about students' hairstyles. You are to nuff bout yuh a question the child his religion. God help us

Andrew Blake: If u a Rasta u a Rasta, no imposta

Brenda Elson: We r at it again poor child We. MAJOR IN MINOR things THIS IS JAMAICA

Instink876Music: Jamaica still a live inna slavery days tpc

V Levene: Rule is rule see that your child accept the rule

Christina Gallimore: Slackness

Dean Lampart: YOU DON'T HAVE TO DREAD TO BE RASTA, It can GROW again. EDUCATION FIRST PRIORITY

Donna Davis: I am just sick of this nonsense. Have they seen some of us as women with some colorful hairstyles in the workplace? Is that an issue? No. Of course not. We are a very backward nation. There are more serious matters to be concerned with.

Clevernique: Pure foolishness them ppl yah focus pon enuh. Full time now schools stop the nonsense. Kmt

Shane Frank: Justice for nzinga

Marlan Dunkley: To attract tourists rasta is accessible but for educational purposes its not allow

Tomoya Vassell: I have the same problem here is hair stopping a child learning

Anje E.: Jamaica is such a hypocritical country when it comes to hair.... Schools don't see no problem when it comes to children filling their head with chemicals via hair perms but is all up in arms when it comes to having natural hair.... Hair does not impact learning, stop this unwarranted discrimination!

Jibril MR.: This guy should have never been a principal in the first place no clue what he's talking about hair

Dawnette Spence: Discrimination

Judith T: Total foolishness!!!!

Althea Benbow: Who says every boy has to trim

Ceejay Robinson: Black children going school all bleached out and no problem yet can't enter with hair, sad!

Vincent Blake: In this time and age people fighting Rasta

Oshane: You don't have to dread to be rasta! This is not a dreadlocks thing....

1 ICONIC BOSS: Prove for what kmt

Hubert Brown: Jamaica wake up its should be a free country.

Shalom Cameroon: DID JESUS TRIM HIS HAIR??

Lorna Adams: Government level with all rules and regulation is a enemy to progress is Rasta put Jamaica on the map yeah I should be shame on yourself

Rococo Chocolate: I see ‍♀️

Millie Byfield: Rule is rule if you don't want to abide by the school rule home school you child

Rene Lambert: Why though?

vgnvz: This is crap for schools to do this. Ask school what their religion is and prove it. Vexed for this family

Jacqueline Gabbidon: Thìs again????

Rococo Chocolate: But if he is not religious to the Rastafarian Group or church then it’s just a style then smh again

Trevor gose Baugh: Every institution carry rule. And you have to comply with the rules. That the REALITY.

Rosetta Hutchinson: Backwards jamaica

Jhea G: Discrimination against a person's religious beliefs should be punishable by law. If his hair is out of his face and in a tam why should it be a problem? This country and their archaic way of thinking is holding us back.

Deshawn McDove: But these same school have no problems when females wear lock, faux locks and braids. In these modern times I can’t believe this is an issue.

1R: Rasta central high so them do my brother

dignity official: All Dem stupid things yah fi stop a the hair yah teach
