In this video, i'm gon na share how i tried sophie marie curly's flip section method on my fine, lower density, curly hair. So i'm gon na show you the actual routine that i use. So you can see me doing flip section method, applying the products and all that and then i'm going to show you how it looks as soon as i'm done diffusing and the next day, which is actually today. If you haven't heard of sophie marie curly's flip section method, it's her method of styling hair that was made popular on her instagram and a lot of people have tried it. It'S supposed to be really good for volume and definition. So, of course, i wanted to give it a try, because those are two things that i'm always striving for mainly volume. So let's get right to it all right, so i'm starting off with wet hair. I'Ve just sprayed it again, just to make sure it's wet enough. So that it is dripping and i'm going to go in with the reflex styling serum first, i don't like to use curl, creams or living conditioners, because it's too much moisture for my hair. So that's why i am layering a serum and then i'm going to put a gel on top of that, so i'm putting it on the length of my hair just because i don't like to get a lot of product near my roots. So i tend to apply from the ears down i'm going to come in with a little mini, wet brush, because i don't like um. I don't want to create like super big clumps, so i'm just going to brush it just to get all the knots out. I had actually washed my hair last night um, but i didn't style it and i just wet it down right now, so that i could style it on camera. So i'm going to start off by splitting it into three sections and i'm just copying sofa marie curley's flip section method, exactly how she does it. So you can watch one of her videos to see. I didn't really change anything. So i'm just separating the sections and clipping each one to keep it separated. It'S a little tricky for me, because i never section my hair when i'm styling and i don't have a lot of hair, so i was trying to grab enough without grabbing too much. I can actually have a little bit left in the sections that way i wasn't gon na apply too much product, so this is the last section i'm going to come in with a brush. The goal is to detangle smooth and create nice clumps. So you can apply the styling product, so i'm brushing it and then i'm going to shake it out to get it to clump with the treluxe gel, i'm just going to get a tiny little bit lots of emulsifying. This gets the product to go a lot further. So now i'm just scrunching the product in, and this is the part that frizzes the most. So i just wanted to make sure that i smoothed it on the underside and had enough product applied, that it wouldn't get frizzy. So now i'm working on the next section. So taking it out and leaving my hand underneath it so that i don't mix it up and just brushing that section out same as before, another dab of product so smooth it over kind of like glazing and then scrunching up and i'm trying to keep it on. The part that i haven't applied product to yet now it's time for the last section, so i'm just repeating the same thing: i'm gon na keep my hand there in between the sections when i brush this part out. This part had a little bit of knots and then i'm going to go in with the gel same as before, glaze and scrunch. I am shaking it out a little bit just so that it falls nicely okay last little product, then i come in with my hair. Towel to do a quick, little micro plop just to get out any excess water and a little bit of product, because i think this is a little too much product. I normally apply about half of what i used and now i stick my hands in and lift up and shake it out just so that the hair doesn't stay, stay stuck to the scalp and then shake it out. Side to side so looks okay, so far, um a little concerned about some of this up here, but i guess we'll see when it dries what it looks like. But this is basically where it parted, i'm not going to touch it. I'M just going to go ahead and diffuse all right, so i diffused i've. Let it settle. It'S been about 10 minutes and it's actually got quite a bit of volume, although it feels like a little bit too much product more than i'm used to using, but i'm gon na scrunch out the crunch and see what it looks like i've got it all flipped Out - and this is basically what i'm left with so i do have quite a bit more volume in this area back here. However, it definitely feels like it's too much product, which is exactly what i was worried about. I feel like tomorrow. It'S going to be really flat and yucky, because i normally that's probably three times as much product as i would normally use. It was really hard to get a little bit to get like a small enough amount, even though i was just dipping my finger in to get a tiny little bit, it was still too much and i was getting product. I think too close to my scalp. So, like i have no frizz up here, which is, i know, a lot of people like that. You want no frizz up here, get some product up here, but this is going to fall flat very quickly because there's product on here and it's not volumizing product, it's defining and moisturizing product, which is what most curly hair products are. So, although the definition is really great, i've got some decent volume. Now i'm really not hopeful, but i will get back to you later and show you what it looks like. So this is the next day. These are the results. Remember i was concerned about it going flat and feeling kind of product-y. It actually doesn't feel as productive as i thought it would a little bit like towards the root area, especially back here where it is greasy already. Let me show you what that looks like, so you can see here this part. Now i didn't shampoo yesterday. I did shampoo the day before, so that does have something to do with it, but still, i feel like if i hadn't gotten any product in this area. It wouldn't look as greasy and it wouldn't be so flat there, but you can see i've got a little bit of volume still in the roots. Nowhere near as much as i had yesterday. Overall, i think it's good. I prefer styling the regular way that i normally do. I just feel like it's really kind of fluffy, which i normally like, but i don't know i'm not really loving these results and it's funny because yesterday i posted something on instagram and somebody commented saying: hey your hair looks a little bit different today. Did you try something new and they were like yeah? The clumps are a little bit smaller, there's a little bit more volume which are good things, but i feel like i don't really like the way it looks like i've got. I don't know. I can't quite put my finger on it. I just feel like it's not as defined as i like it's like very stringy, and i don't like when my curls look really stringy and i think it's because i used too much product. I think that's really the problem. I don't think it's so much the method, so maybe i could try it again by applying all the product first and then sectioning brushing and scrunching and going from there instead of applying product every time i section, i think it's just way too much product for my Hair, so i'm definitely going to try this again, but i'm going to try it with a different lineup of products and i'm going to try like that. Try putting the products on before and then doing the sectioning and brushing after and we'll see i'll do that in a couple of weeks, but yeah i did want to show you so it didn't change very much overnight, which is pretty good. I use a buff to sleep on and a silk pillowcase, although my buff usually stays on overnight. So the silk pillowcase doesn't really have much of an effect just really nice and smooth and i've gotten used to it on my skin. So i really like having it but yeah. I do have some nice definition down here. I just feel like this part. I don't know, i'm not happy, not so happy with the middle part, and i really can't put into words what it is that i don't like about my results again. It feels too productive near the roots. Maybe that's what it is. So i'm going to give this experiment another try, like i said, and i will share those results with you. So let me know in the comments if you've tried this styling technique or method and how it worked out for you. I hope you enjoyed this video. If so, please hit that like and subscribe button, and i will see you in the next one - you

Mattar: There's a technique that works with some gels that turns it into a foam but it has to have some surfactant in it. I forgot who it was but a user on Instagram showed this hack with a foam bottle by mixing a small amount of gel and water to get more even coverage with way less gel. Seems like this hack would work well with this flip section technique
