Am I saying that right nambia? I love that that name, that's a pretty name. I know it's the name of where you're from, but it's a pretty name AJ. What'S up AJ, how are you listen, I'm glad to be back. I am glad to be back. Oh Beverly from Wales, hello, hello, hello, Miss Gilbert. How are you I saw you yesterday on marquette's? A lot I mean uh, God works. This is Mark one of the friends of love. Oh man, I miss how to pray but we'll watch it later. Awesome awesome, awesome Constance. How are you somebody knows my name from back home? Hey quit, hey conscious is always it's always weird to hear. Somebody call me quit um, especially like on these live settings, because that means either it's one of two things: either you've heard Ricky call me that, or you know me from back home and nobody calls me that anymore, except my my husband and my family. So it's always interesting to hear somebody call me quit. They used to call me that in high school, all right, um, greetings, Jazzy says greetings hello from Togo, hello! Yes, me too me too me too me too, all right! So, let's get into the top 10 mistakes. Wig makers make when making wigs all right here we go. This is the thumbnail right here. The top 10 mistakes, wig makers - make with wigs if you're just tuning in that is our topic for today. So I'm gon na get right into this topic right now. All right so number one improper preparation of the client's hair. My goodness all right, listen! I will never forget this. Oh man, let me grab my coffee, real, quick. I will never ever forget this. So one day this was a few years back. I was uh in my salon. I had I used to have a brick and mortar Salon where I would service clients who uh privately, who were suffering suffering from hair loss and needed those types of services. So I'm in this I get a phone call and this girl is like she's upset she's like I, I have a wig, it doesn't fit. It'S too big. I don't know what to do. I pay a lot of money for this. Can you help me now? I didn't fit her measure her for the wig or anything like that. It was another stylist in the area that did it. So this young lady comes into the salon and um she's there and she's sitting down, and I you know her hair is braided down. I think she had like maybe six large braids, that braided down and I put the wig on her and is way too big, and so I start to ask her questions, and I I say: okay, you know what did how how were your measurements taken? How did she measure you for the wig yada yada, so when we got down to the to the brass tacks, when we got down to what exactly happened, The Stylist took this young lady's measurements. While she had a full sew-in now you might be saying what's the problem with that, it's a huge problem, because one of the things I teach in like everything that has to do with lace, wigs that I teach is why it is very, very, very important for The hair to be prepared the same way throughout the entire process, meaning when you get ready to take the mold. The hair needs to be the same way when you fit the cap. If you make a custom cap, the hair needs to be prepared the same way and when they actually wear the wig, the hair needs to be prepared the same way. Why? Because it will significantly alter the fit and shape of the wig, if you don't so, for instance, the hair can't be braided when they come in for you to make their mold and then it's pin curled when they actually wear the wig, because it's not going to Fit right so your measurements, your cap, fit your mold everything that hair has to be prepared. The same way for the entire process, all right, so improper measurements is a big mistake that a lot of wig makers make it's a big mistake. Measurements aren't done properly. Let me just take a small break because I forgot to tell y'all this: if you hear knocking bumping Drilling any kind of weird noise, it is because we're still having stuff done to the house and they're here actively working as we speak. So uh. That'S! If you hear that noise, that's what it is, I don't know if my mic is able to pick it up, but there you go all right, moving right along so drop a one in the chat. If you're following following me, it's breaking up. It should be fine. So uh, yes, these okay, so yeah the the live, hey Daniel, the live is gon na be saved. I'M I don't know. What'S going on my connection, it says that I have a very strong connection, so maybe uh yeah yeah, it's it just, maybe hop off and hop back on. Okay, all right! So that's number one! So improper measurements is number one. Okay, so make sure that when you take the measurements, the hair is prepared the same way throughout the entire process. All right, let's go into number two number. Two speaking of measurements, is about measurements um. Now this screenshot right here is a is a. It was actually a picture that a photographer took um a few years ago at one of my live events that tape measure is some people call it a cloth tape measure um, but you just want to make sure that the tape measure that you use to take Your measurements is uh, either the plastic version of that or an actual cloth version of that, because it needs to be able to um conform to the shape of the client's head so that you get proper measurements. What a lot of people do or mess up on when they take these measurements is they're not like, let's say, you're, taking a circumference measurement that circumference measurement. Sometimes people don't properly go over the occipital bone, which is the little protruding bone in the back of the head. They don't properly measure that area or um. The tape measure that they're using they're, starting in not where the the numbers start but they're, starting where the little metal thing starts and that throws off measurements. There are so many different things that can throw off measurements. So you want to make sure that when you measure the head you're doing your proper measurements and maybe I'll record a video later on all of the measurements that you need to take and how to properly take those measurements. I don't have time to do it today, but maybe I'll do that at another setting all right, so you want to make sure that the the measurements you take remember that hair needs to be prepared the same way for each step in the process of even taking Measurements: okay, that is very, very, very important okay, so this is going pretty fast. All right number: three, not double checking measurements; okay, so listen! Sometimes, when it comes to the process of making wigs we get caught up in how long it actually takes to start the wig, but the beauty is in the preparation before you start. Here'S what I mean by that the art I'll say the art is in the preparation before you start, because you need to sharpen your ax before you go and cut down the tree. The sharpening of the ax is making sure that that hair is braided down the same way throughout the whole process. It'S making sure that the mold is done properly. It'S making sure that the measurements are taken properly, it's ensuring all of these things. So once you take the measurements you create the cap or you take the measurements and you make the mold and then you transfer the mold over to the wig block. You need to double check those measurements to make sure that everything is in line. The reason why you want to do this is because sometimes which I'm going to get to next, sometimes when people make molds, they don't make the molds correctly and the measurements can be somewhat off if your measurements are off and you go to block that mode onto Your wig block you go to attach it to that wig block once you do that. If something is off and you don't double check your measurements, you're going to waste a ton of time making a wig that does not fit so you need to get into the habit of double checking those measurements, making sure that and then some people I've seen um Will have their cloth measuring tapes on their wig blocks, just to ensure that the measurements are good or just so that when they're making wigs and a lot of time, that's done for stock, wigs they'll do that. You can absolutely do that. Whatever floats your boat, whatever ensures that the measurements that you take are in line with the actual measurements you took when the client was sitting in your chair all right, I'm gon na hop over here to some of these comments and see what y'all are talking about Over here um, but this is good. This is good. Uh, Miss Gilbert said: please we need the measurement video. I got. You covered Lily Wiggins. How are you I sent you a message via messenger? I need your help um, which Messenger on YouTube Instagram Facebook? Where did you send the message good morning good morning good morning, so if you're just tuning in today, I am sharing with you. The top 10 mistakes wig makers, make when making wigs so so far, we've been through about four or five of them, so improper preparation of the client's hair, incorrect measurements, not double checking measurements and the next one we're gon na get into is an incorrect mold incorrect Mode, so one of the things that I am working on right now is we're doing the audio recording the audio book to my newest book um. I was about to say fully booked in my newest book lace, wig Revolution. Let me grab it real quick. I thought I had it besides um okay, this book right here, lace, wig Revolution, is my newest book. I haven't, I haven't launched it, yet it's not available yet and that's not the announcement that I'm making later um but inside the book. I talk about my process for making wigs, so I'm gon na sit here for a moment and talk about um these modes, the incorrect molds. That'S what we're talking about right now. This is number 4 out of ten um mistakes that wig makers make when making wigs. So there's different ways to approach how you make a mold um for your lace. Wig one way is to use a clear. It'S almost like shipping tape, it's called sellotape sellotape and it's very thin. It'S flimsy, but the strips are very wide. Some people will use one layer of that tape. They will add a circumference band and use, or maybe two layers, and then they use that mold to then Pat out a wig block by putting that off and on the wig block, while using padding to build it up to make sure that it conforms to the Shape and then they discard - or they put take the actual mold that they made and put it to the side because they don't need it anymore because they patted it out on an actual wig block. That'S one way of doing things, however, when I was discovering my process when my mom had first got diagnosed with breast cancer. I didn't know that that there was. I didn't know that that was how most people did it. It did not work for me, so I had to figure out a way uh to create a mold and use this mode to be a like a shape of the client's head. So I could build the cap on it, build a foundation and so, in my Discovery, what I use is Scotch tape, but there's two different types of tape that I use. I use clear tape uh, but it's in it's by Scotch, but it's the clear one and then I use the the opaque one and there's a layering there's a certain way that I layer it to make sure that it conforms to the shape of the client's head. That'S the way I do it, so that's the way I'm going to refer to in this video when you do it that way, it should look something like this. This right here is the mold that I did um on my daughter's head for lacewig University. Now the biggest mistake where this arrow is pointing the biggest mistake that people make when making molds is when they draw in that nape area they stop because the actual plastic wrap. Doesn'T they don't cover it rolls up and it doesn't go all the way down. You see her hair sticking out down there at the bottom. My daughter's hair actually almost grows down to her back back there because she has such a like. She has a lot of vella's hair back there, so she usually just gets that trimmed up when she goes to the salon or whatever, and they take all of that excess hair off at the bottom. So right there, where you saw me, draw in her nape area. That'S where we stopped her mold, because that's where the wig is going to stop. But most a lot of people have an issue with the plastic wrap rolling up in the back, and so they don't. That measurement is usually offered. The mold is off because it's not completed because it's not open. If that happens, that is, when you're going to use your measurement to fill this area out so you're going to take the measurement from ear to nape. Let'S say the mold Lord have mercy, I'm pointing I'm using my mouse like y'all can see it here. Let'S do this. Okay, that's not going to work. So let me just come back full screen hold on um there we go so let's say when you're making a mode. You stop like right here, because the plastic wrap rolled up what you're going to do is you're, going to take that measurement from ear to nape and you're going to make sure that measurement is right. It should be if you, if it stop right about here, you'll be off by about an inch, and so what you want to do is you need to go in and add that inch down to the bottom and close that area in that's where your measurements are Really going to come in handy because you need to fill that area out to make sure you have proper coverage, but what some people do is if that area isn't filled in they just stop making the wig there or they try to eyeball it and guess at It and it doesn't work and you don't have a good fit at the nape of the neck or underneath that occipital bone, because that measurement is not done properly all right, let me know if y'all are following me on that drop. Let me give me a one in the chat, if you understood what I was saying there all right, so you need to make sure that that measurement is that you take those measurements and you transfer them over to make sure sure that that area is filled out Properly, okay, good good, good, good, good, okay, another issue that a lot of people have is, let me go back to my screenshot - is that area over the ear, sometimes that area over the ear will be too shallow, and when you make the actual wig it'll, be Too short, so what you can do when you draw the actual area in you can come back with a different color marker, like a red or something like that and drop that measurement down by a couple of centimeters like one or two centimeters, just to ensure that You have proper coverage over that ear because it could be too shallow um. Sometimes that does happen. That is too shallow in that area okay hold on. Let me see, I see some questions over here. I see a question right here from elstina. Please tell me what to click on your YouTube channel to reinstate I don't know, I don't know what to click on. I think you just have to go there like you're going to sign up again. I think, but I'm not sure, I'm not sure exactly how that goes all right. So that's improper incorrect mode. Rather all right next is bulky seams bulky seams. So what a lot of people when they're, making these wigs they're doing these um different type of seaming methods, and sometimes those seaming methods, can be too bulky underneath the wig and it makes for an uncomfortable type of fitted cap. But there's two scenes that I like to use the most that I'm about to share, so I have a six minute video that I'm going to share. You can find this the the full video. I don't even think this is the full six minutes, but you can find the full video over on um my YouTube channel all right. The full video is there just do a search for flat and folded seams within my channel. So I'm gon na play this video and then I'll be right back to continue with the top 10 mistakes. Wig makers make when making wigs all right, so the first seam we're going to start with is the flat seam. Now, here's what I want you to always remember when you're seaming things together, two pieces of lace: you never seam along the edge because the lace can Fray along that edge. So you always want to seem not on the edge. But you want to come in a little bit: okay and that's true to both sides. So even here we're not going to seam along that edge and we're not going to seam along this Edge, we're going to come in the middle and as I'm seaming I'm going to come down and then I'm going to go back okay. So what you want to do is you want to make sure you're going through all of the layers of the lace I'm going to start at the edge and I'm going to make a double knot. One okay: I pulled that turnover out and then I'm just gon na go through and make another knot. Okay, and you want to pull that other one all the way through all right now I have two pieces. So what I'm going to do with this short piece right here is just snip it. So I'm going to grab my scissors - and I just cut this piece right here off now. What I'm going to do is I'm just going to whip all the way down. Okay, now on that third whip, which would be this one and sometimes when you're going through a lot of layers of lace it can get stuck. But on that third whip, I'm just going to make a single knot. Okay and I'm gon na keep going all the way down. Okay, guys, I'm finishing up this last Stitch, all right. So what you see here - and you see my needle holder - has changed um, because I also changed my needle typically, I like to use the Asian needle. But here I'm using the German needle, because it's easier to sew with the ventilating needle with this German needle. For some reason now what I did at the end, I already have a single knot here, I'm just going to go back through and I'm gon na do a double knot and then this seam is completed. So now. What I want you to do is I want you to go ahead and Stitch another seam down the um other side, and then that's it. Your flat seam is complete. So I just want you to see, even after one stitch down the middle, it's still very, very sturdy. This thing is not gon na come apart. It'S super super duper sturdy, so you fold it over once. Okay, I'm gon na stick two pins over there to stitch that down. I mean to hold it in place. I'M going to fold this over okay, I'm gon na Stitch this down. Then, when I'm done stitching that down I'm going to turn it over like this and it's going to be folded together and then fold it over once: okay and then I'm gon na flip it and Stitch It Down. Foreign foreign. My mic was muted, okay. Those are two different seaming methods that you can use the second one. The fridge seam is is a little bit more to it, and it's a little bit more bulky than the flat seam, but the biggest mistake a lot of people make when seaming is. They seem along the edge, and you should never seam along the edge, always make sure that your seaming um in the middle and following those instructions from what you just saw all right. I just saw a few more people come into the live if you're just tuning into the live. Today, I am sharing with you the top 10 mistakes, wig makers make when making wigs - and so far we've been through some of these number one: improper preparation of the client's hair underneath the wig incorrect measurements, not double checking measurements, incorrect, mold and bulky seams all right. So now we're gon na go on to the next one, but before I do that, let me jump over here into the comments and see what's going on. Oh so uh elstina, I don't know, I don't know what you're not like, what you're not seeing the membership link. Is it there, so I'm gon na scroll this one along the bottom and you can just go to uh. Where is it oh right here? My credit person.com join. If you go there, it should take you to where you need to be to re-instate your membership, uh, Fab and Good Vibes Gloria Armstrong says. I think that it was better for me to have to go, have help. My daughter from my third wigmo - I did the first two on my own. Listen, it is so difficult, but Toria y'all know. I love me some Tory Demps Toria created. She has this video training. I don't know where I don't know if she still has it, but she used to have a training teaching you how to make your own mold um, but it's just not something I've ever mastered or something that I do well. So I never. I never even ventured in that direction, but it's excuse me. It'S definitely something. That'S doable, it's just not my thing, so I definitely understand um why you needed to do it with your daughter. I did my first on my own and didn't get my perfect beautiful. I love that beautiful head shape, yeah, oh man! Thank you so much. Thank you. India, new life for that super sticker of 4.99 you're. So awesome. I appreciate you. Thank you so much uh Shelly says hi Marquetta, I'm here today I was in your life for the first time, hello to everyone in the chat. Hey! Thank you for coming back. I remember you from yesterday Tatiana how Tatiana you're not going to be able to see this on film, but I want to show you something Tatiana so for those that don't know um a few years back when I first launched Lace Wig, It was the last week Training system 2.0 um hold on laceweek training system 2.0. I had my students submit their stories to be featured in my book, lace, wig Revolution and Tatiana guess who's in there dang it. You can't see it. Let me see: no, you can't see it but Tatiana right here. You can't see this, but right here is your name and your story in my book. Congratulations all right! I'M super excited! I I love shouting out my students anytime. I get the opportunity so that was very special for me. Okay um, I bet Iris Roland says I have my boyfriend too much. I love it. I love it. Hey! Whatever works right, whatever works, uh uh, the flat is better. Yes, I prefer the flat seam, because it's no bulk and doing those French seams they just take longer - and I don't like to take forever to do stuff so yeah Brenda, Jameson, uh blessings to Marquetta and Lacewood University family. Thank you for sharing this teaching message. Much love and appreciation you are so sweet. You are so sweet. Thank you. So much um turn that yeah, I'm not able to do that because it's a lot it's natural light in here I don't have any lighting mechanism or anything Illuminating my face. This is all my natural light um, it's really bright in here during the day, because I have these sliding glass doors that are literally right here, so it gives a lot of natural light and so nothing I can do about that. Um you are so welcome. You are so welcome. Uh Tracy says: congratulations, Tatiana! I'M guessing that's for Tatiana all right! Let'S get this on and pop in remember. I have a big announcement for anybody that has a wig business, all right, anybody that has a wig business. You do not want to miss this announcement, I'm doing something extra special, it's not the American wig Association, although, although you definitely need to join the American wig Association, I'll talk about that uh at the end, but and it's not Ezra all right, but Ezra is prayerfully. Coming this week, um, so it's not those two things so make sure you stay to the end, because I'm very very excited Nina Nina says I love the natural lighting. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you, um. Okay, let me remove this ticker, so we can get it cracking because I have. I don't have that many more I'm halfway through all right, this one right here, wrong lace! Oh my goodness! So this one right here is one that a lot of people just just get wrong. Um I've seen people use Beauty Supply, Store lace. I see. I still just saw that comment from AJ I've seen people use Beauty, Supply, Store, lace, I've seen people use um. Some of the stuff that you can get off Amazon - that's not like legit lace, I've seen a lot of things and while their work is beautiful, the piece just doesn't look that good, because the lace is the wrong lace, all right, and so here's do. I have my lace book. I don't have my lace book over here, um, here's what I'm going to suggest when it comes to lace number one make sure you are purchasing your lace sample cards from the companies that you're going to order lace from so if it's at Lee or bossy buy Their late sample card uh, the wig department, make sure that you, if they have one, get a late sample card, jagazi Naturals get a lace sample card, so you can touch it and you can feel it and you can order the right type of lace. There is a difference between Asian lace and Lace that you get from like Switzerland from somebody that specializes in wig making tools. There is a difference and in fact, a few years back, I was at dinner with the owner of Atley or bossy, Mr Orlando bossi, and we talked about there. There is a distinct difference between the lace that is manufactured in Asia and the lace that that they make that he makes so there's a there's, a big difference, so you want to make sure that you're able to touch it and feel it. So you know what you're ordering now. Let me say this: I have a video on this. I have a whole video dedicated to HD lace and why you may not necessarily need HD lace. Hd lace is not meant to be used on a piece that somebody is going to wear every single day. That'S not what it's meant to be used for. Hd lace is typically used for your hero. Hero, wigs a hero. Wig is the wig that the main actor wears in television and film that's what's called the hero wig, it's the the wig that they wear that's going to be on camera for the main actor they put it on shoot their scene do what they got to do For the day, and then they take it off, it is not meant to be worn, um every single day or for multiple days on end. That'S not what it's for so with that being said, you need to make sure that whatever you choose, I mean, and just because something is not HD does not mean um. It'S not gon na melt because it's still going to melt film lace is just as amazing as HD lace. All right! It'S it's amazing! So you you just want to make sure you have those lace sample cards so that you can test it out and see which one is which there is no. You mean which one Sandy Rose said, which one is better in terms of. Are you talking about the Asian lace and the um, I'm just gon na call it the the lace manufactured in Switzerland should say the Asian lace and the wig Lace. I don't know how to distinguish. I don't know what terminology I want to use to distinguish the two, because I don't want to be disrespectful to either of them. Oh okay, my preferred type of lace is lace. That'S purchased from wig companies who specialize in wig making, meaning they have like at Lee. Arabasi, the wig department, jigazi Naturals, those are specialty places that that's what they do, they don't um and I think Mr bossy, I think, Orlando they manuf they um may do some stuff with hair, but their sole purpose is to provide wig tools and tools for special Effects makeup and stuff like that they specialize in that, so that is what they do: the wig department. That is what they do. So that's where I'm going to be making my purchases from like from companies that that that is what they do. Not I don't like. The way the the Asian lace feels I feel like it's too rough, and it has a grayish Hue to it and it doesn't melt it's like you got to put on makeup on it and then you got ta like rub it, and then you got ta like I don't like doing that, and so with this other lace from other companies, you don't have to do that. Vernell, I would say a coated film lace. You can purchase coated lace from Atlee or bossy. I would highly recommend purchasing the coated lace sample card um, but I would recommend a coated lace. That'S what I would recommend yeah Swiss slice and Korean lace. I get it Swiss lace. The Swiss lace terminology has been misconstrued for many years. People used to say Swiss lace was a thinner lace and French lace was your thicker lace. The terminology is all I feel like it's all jacked up but yeah. We can say it like that Swiss lace and Korean lace um. Please, can we get that list of wig markers? I couldn't write it all down, taking lace, markers um. I don't know what your can. You clarify that, for me, lace markers, I'm not sure um everybody wants to be the hero every day, though hahaha I should have known that was you Victor always making somebody laughs, everybody who does want to be the hero every day, but I still think that there's Some really good, I mean I've, seen some um film lace that looks just as good as the HD lace, but it's a little bit more sturdy. It'S just about testing the different ones out up against your skin Victor. I can always count on you to give me a good laugh um. Yes, isn't he, though he is so right. I purchased the lace cars too. How would you know which wig calls for what lace? That'S where you have to have a thorough consultation, um you'll know like if your client, in your consultation, you're talking to your client you're like okay um. What do you do every single day? Do you work out? Do you do this? Do you do that? Have you worn wigs before it's just in the questions that you ask your clients if they've never worn a wig before don't use HD lace on them all right, they're, not going to know how to properly care? For that, so you want to use something like a a coated. Film lace. You don't want to use HD lace on somebody. That'S never worn a wig before so. The lace that you choose is going to be based on uh. The consultation that you have with your client and the end result. That'S why it's important to have those lace sample cards, so you know what to choose from ha, I'm not sure. Oh, oh yeah, the gray, the grayish tint and all that yeah. Can we get a list of lace? Oh lace makers, oh um, it's just simple at Lee or bossy, the wig department - and I mean there's many more than what I'm listing, but these are the top three that are in my head right now. The wig department at Lee, arabasi and jagazi Naturals, those are the top three that are in my head right now, um, I see what you're saying I see what you're saying people, what does AJ say: people who don't make wigs, don't really know the right names or Denirs even exist exactly so you being the trusted advisor is up to you as the person making their wig to educate them on the different types of lace or the different types of whatever it is they're there to purchase from you. You have to look at yourself as a trusted advisor. They are trusting you to advise them and lead them in the right direction. So in order I just talked about this last night. Actually, with uh the Inner Circle members, you have to look at yourself as a trusted advisor, so your responsibility is to guide your people in the right direction so that they are able to um you're able to come together and partner on the making of This wig. So they're, not blindsided by you, know you making a wig for them that they need but they're like that's, not what I wanted. So you need to make sure that you're thorough in your consultation and that you understand what you're doing so, that you can offer them and know what not offer them, but those so that you can know how to guide them in the right direction. Uh. Okay, let's see making sure I get everybody before I go on to the next one. Jlk said I had taken a medical wig class and I'm certified congratulations. How do I get my medical wig business to start stay to the end of this live, and how do I get insurance companies to know about me? Um stay to the end of this live. I have something that will really help you out a lot uh at Leo. Thank you Nina. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. What are your thoughts on lace, color or tinting, the lace? To get that melted? Look, I am not against it. I think a lot of times it's required uh because of our different skin tones, so I'm not against that at all um, but I think that you can eliminate having to do so much of it if the correct lace is chosen from the beginning, but I'm not Against that, at all like what you're doing with us, I soak up what you tell thank you. Thank you. Thank you all right, all right. So, let's move on to the next. I think we only have four more um. Let'S see what did I talk about? Uh? Oh wrong: lace: okay, yep! I have one two, three, four more all right. The next one is the wrong needle type. That really probably should say the wrong type of needle but y'all know what I mean. Here'S what I really mean. I had a uh one of my two-day lace: wig seminars, I'm laughing because this was actually really funny and as everybody was coming in, you know how, when people come in, they we greet each other, give each other hugs and all that good stuff. I'M glad to be hugging people again um. So this lady comes in and she's. You know she's giving me a hug and she's like oh hey. How are you I'm just taking this class? I already know how to ventilate. I'Ve been ventilating for 15 years, yada, yada, yada and she's, going on. I'M like okay, that's amazing yay! So we get to the portion in the class where everybody is taking out their stuff and we're getting ready to get hands on and she takes out her ventilating needle, which was a crochet hook. And when I'm coming around and I'm looking at everybody's stuff. And it - and you know she didn't - take out the the tools that were provided because at this particular event I provide the tools and she took out her own needle and now and when I walked by and I was checking everybody's stuff. I said oh okay, this where's, your needle and she was like. Oh, this is my needle and I said, oh okay, let me see - and I started to dig a little bit deeper and I said, let me see the work that you've done with this needle and it was definitely not ventilating like we know ventilating. It was something a little bit different and so um. I had to help her understand that that's not the correct tool to do what we do as wig makers, and so she listened and she ended up learning how to ventilate the other way but um. That was challenging, to say the least. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen people try to ventilate with a tiny um crochet. When I say crochet, I don't mean like crochet braids, I mean like crochet like like when people make the blankets and the doilies and stuff like people will try to use those and it's just not a ventilating needle. You cannot use that on an HD lace or a film lace. It'S going to be too big. You have to use the proper needles. You need to use proper needle holders. You need to make sure that the tools that you're using are the tools that are actually used for wigs, because your result is going to be different if it isn't all right. That is key key key yeah I I have. I have seen people from other countries using a crochet hook and in my opinion now I I I could be wrong, but in my opinion you just don't get that same, look um and it doesn't move right and it just doesn't look right. This is my opinion. All right, this is my personal opinion um, so yeah yeah. So you want to make sure that you're using the proper tools, the proper needles when ventilating and using the correct sizes, so some people will have an issue with the amount of hairs they're picking up like. Let'S say you're trying to chunk out a wig um chunking out a wig is when you're working with a thicker lace in the middle, like, let's say, an upper lace and it's not going to be visible to the naked eye. But it's a large area, bigger holes. So you need to chunk it out, so you need to go up a needle size, go to a size, 3, 4 needle, so that you can grab more hairs to chunk it out um. If you're ventilating around the hairline, you need to go down a size so that you can work with fine hair to detail that hairline area all right. So you just want to make sure you're using the proper tools for that yeah. I don't need. I don't understand it either Crystal I just don't get it all all right, moving right along this is another one ventilating in different directions. Um, I'm sure all of you at some point have either done this yourselves or seen other people who do it and it's people who ventilate just to ventilate and they're pulling the hair in whatever Direction they find and usually that just comes from learning. Just how to tie the knot and not learning about the directions, the importance of the directions and the side in which you place your needle on whatever particular bar and the way it's rotated and all of that stuff. All right and so. And looking at these two images, you can see what differences directions make and this image on the left. Where you see the crown, you can see there that I'm cross knotting, so some hair, the hair on the row in front of the row I'm working on, is going to the left and the other hair is going to the right all right. That'S why direction is so important, and you see on the picture on the right. All of the hair is ventilated in the same direction, going straight back, okay, the direction in which you pull your hair matters tremendously. So you want to make sure that you're being paying attention to that all right. This is another one. Your turnover is too long if or turnovers being too long. This is a big mistake that a lot of people make and they wonder why the hair is matting and tangling, and it's because the turnover chances are it could be because the turnover is too long. The turnover is where you fold the hair to. I was looking for a piece of hair. The turnover is where you fold the hair to ventilate. So this right here would be my my turnover where I folded the hair to start ventilating. A good turnover is never any longer than two inches unless you are working with non-cuticle hair. If you're working with non-cuticle hair, it really doesn't matter where you turn the hair over, because the cuticles are not going to get mismatched. But if you let's say you're working with a synthetic hair and you fold, the hair in half know that you're going to have more bulk, because, whereas you had one strand of hair, you now have two strands of hair. So just be mindful of that. Um be mindful of that now, sometimes people make their turnovers um three inches and four inches and there's matting and tangling. The reason why is because the the the cuticle, if you're working with cuticle hair and the cuticle is still intact? Those cuticles are going to lock with each other when they become mismatched, so where that hair is turned over, those cuticles are now going in the opposite direction of the hair, and so when they come together, they're going to lock and that's what's going to cause the Tangling and matting some companies - it's very rare - to find this, but some companies will strip the cuticle for those two inches for your turnover. Most companies won't do that um, but there's all options Alternatives. You can go through and cut your turnovers out. If you want to have a full training on YouTube for that, I didn't include it here, but that's an option to cut your turnovers out, but in most cases people you know you're fine. If you leave those turnovers um as long as they are two inches or less um, I'm sure we've all seen those wigs where those turnovers are sticking. The short hairs are sticking straight up all over the wig and you got ta fry. It diet lay it to the side. Comb it down, use moose Grease got to be all kinds of things just to keep it down. We don't want to do that. All right. We want to make sure you're properly handling those turnovers. Okay, let me jump over to the comments. We'Re almost done guys uh, Miss Gilbert said I shouldn't laugh, but it's funny crochet needle Marquetta, I'm on my lunch break. I laughed out loud in the office. Please don't get me in trouble. Oh, my bad laugh, um uh. Let'S see, I'm still working on perfecting the turnover it's a work in progress, uh Nina says LOL. I was thinking of your own hair when you picked up your hair. This explains why the closure I met wow. Yes, yes, yes, so there is a YouTube video that I have to teach you how to cut those turnovers out um. It would take me too long to find it on here, but I'll look for it. I know it's on my channel somewhere, but um. If you just do a search for it, you should be able to find it. Um crystal says: it's like you, either get a lot of short hairs or tangling does cutting the turnover is called shedding. Eventually it could um, but I haven't had a piece where I cut the turnovers out. I haven't had it shed more than any other piece which should just use some got to be distilled those knots and I think you'll be fine. Uh Nina says when the turnovers are stripped, would it no longer matter correct, uh, the matting, wouldn't matter, because there would be no cuticle to to tangle up with the other hair that still has the cuticle intact um yeah and the only other thing that could be A little bit weird is, if you try to color the hair with the cuticle strip, because there's no cuticle to open up and penetrate um down to the the the cortex or the medulla to actually change the structure or the to pull the pigment. So if you're trying to root a wig, it would be probably okay, but if you were trying to color the whole thing, it wouldn't work um. So you would need to order the hair and the color that you wanted it in um. Do you have online class on ventilating, not on ventilating alone, but I I am actually really considering uh just doing a class on ventilating. I haven't solidified that yet, but I'm thinking about it. I know that I am going to do one on hair patches, um here very very soon, but I'm ventilating alone. I don't, but I do have some free training on my YouTube channel that you can check out. Uh uh Yvette says jagazi Naturals website is amazing ain't. It though it is absolutely amazing. Okay, I think I have two more two more yes, no, I have one more okay, I have one more, the last one, and this one is another one that I I don't see as many people making this mistake, but I still see quite a few people making This mistake and it is using the wrong type of wig block um, I'm still seeing a few people here. There use the styrofoam and I don't mean the hard foam ones that you can get from Atlee or bossy. I mean the ones that you can get out of Sally's, I'm still seeing people use those to make wigs on the problem with that. Is that it's not! That is not a realistic shape of anybody's head and it's not like. That'S, that's not what you want to use um. The only thing I maybe - and this is a very strong - maybe like - if if I could not get a wig block like if I absolutely had to do something and I could not get a wig block, but I had to have something then maybe I'd use that For like a crown world or or closure, or something like that, but never for a full lace, wig ever um. You want to make sure that you're always using the proper tools, always using the proper tools for Wig making, um and making sure that um. You understand what those things are used for. So with your wig blocks, you have the different materials, you have the synthetic leather, you have, the canvas wig blocks and you have your hard foam, wig blocks and um. Those are the top three and then your wooden wig blocks. The wooden wig blocks are typically used to build your foundations or your caps on um. The canvas ones are the most common ones. The hard foam ones are great, but the thing I don't like about those hard phone blocks is that sometimes, when you push the pins in you, if you push too hard, you can Dent the um actual wig block. So that's not my favorite um and then the synthetic leather ones are more so for styling, okay, the long neck ones, people ask me all the time. What is the purpose of the long neck wig block the long neck wig block is used for styling in the wig World. They call Styling dressing all right. That'S what the long neck ones are used for. Okay, so make sure that you're choosing the proper wig block. Okay, so real fast, I'm going to go through all of the 10 mistakes again and then I'll make a couple of quick announcements. I'Ll take some questions and then we'll be done all right. I'M only two minutes over my hour today, but I'm gon na go a little bit long today, because I haven't been live in so long all right. So real, quick, let's go through everything again. The first one is improper preparation of the client's hair. The second one is taking incorrect measurements. The third one is not double checking the measurements, the fourth one is incorrect mode. The fifth one is bulky seams. The sixth one is using the wrong type of lace. The seventh One is using the wrong needle type, eight ventilating in the wrong in different directions, but also the wrong directions. Number nine is your turnover may be too long and number 10 using the wrong type of wig block. Those are the top 10 mistakes. Wig makers make when making Lace, Wigs all right, um, there's, obviously more mistakes, like lighting people, you know that's the toughest thing and I wish I had that light. You know where I'm gon na I'm gon na do a video talking about the different types of lights that you can use for ventilating my daughter just bought one. No I'm gon na go find it. My daughter just bought one on Amazon um that I absolutely love. I'M just gon na have to to do a show on it and share all the different links and the different areas where you can buy your lights and stuff from because it is absolutely amazing. Okay, let me hop over here really really quick uh to some of these comments, that I'll make my announcements and then I'll sign up. Oh thank you! So much you're such an amazing educator, slash instructor you're, so sweet um. Yes, that is a great great great Point. Kids, wigs, if you can't find a wig block small enough uh Gloria Armstrong says, get the blocks. I have three 20 inch, 22 inch and 24 and they're all well spent investment agreed, agreed, agreed uh. The American wig Association is. That is something that the lord gave us. He actually gave it to both of us um, and we came together to build the American wig Association as a place where people who make wigs or people who sell wigs can connect with people who need them all right. That is something that has been missing in our industry for a long time, but it it actually goes deeper than that with what we're doing with the American wig Association um.
