FULL TECHNIQUE VIDEO

I wanted to share how I add dimension back into my clients who have gray hair and why you should NOT use bleach on their hair, but what I use instead of bleach for highlights on gray hair.

Well, today, I'm gon na be doing something a little bit different than what I normally do, but my client has naturally gray hair and we actually are going to low light her hair. This is going to be a video that you absolutely want to check out. Hey guys, what's up welcome to my youtube channel, my client has naturally gray hair and we actually are going to low light her hair instead of highlighting it, which is what I am so known for my blondes and highlighting, but today we're gon na low light. Her hair, so if you have clients that are naturally gray or deal with wanting to grow in their natural color, so keep watching the for her low light. We are gon na, do kenra 1 n, +, 4 n and just do equal parts with 20 volume and basically her low light is gon na end up being the highlight almost in a way. So, in a normal situation, you would be highlighting hair and adding in low. You know adding in low lights as depth, but in fact we're actually switching the two and her highlights are gon na, be the less we're actually gon na do a lot more Lola. So again, we're just gon na do equal parts of this, and this will be our light. All right, and so for her highlight we're actually gon na do shades eq 9 v9p at third of our formula will be that and then two thirds of our formula will be crystal-clear and actually going to use the new developer. That is a more precision application because we are putting these in foils. It helps to have it be a little bit thicker. So, let's mix this up, I'm gon na do like I said a third of our formula. Thankee b2 third shade that clear - and this will ensure a very like sheer tone for her - highlights about two ounces total and then you guys can see that consistency with that developer. It makes it a little bit more gelatinous and so much better for foil applications. This is our starting cam, as you guys can see. She'S got her natural color here kind of at the top. We'Ve done some lowlights before and before we actually used to bleach out for her highlights. But we don't do that anymore because you guys can see it brings up a lot of those underlying pigments and that warm tone. So we don't do that anymore. But that's why I'm gon na use a kind of glaze formula or for highlights so we're kind of toning that all while working at the same time? Alright. So we are starting kind of here. I'M gon na work my way down we're just doing a partial and then I'll work my way forward, but this is kind of gon na be our first highlight piece and you guys could see. This is where we had previously lightened it with Lightner, and you guys can see kind of those warm tones that are still in there. So we're gon na tone this out, and this is going to be our highlight piece, but basically that shades eq formula is going to help tone that and separate it from the rest. She wants to add a little bit more of her natural color in this time. So that's why I like using shades eq because, like i said it's going to tone it and basically do the job of two steps in one eliminating those pieces so that they're out of the way and also toning it down to alright, so that our next piece That we're gon na do we're gon na do a little eye and pretty much we used to do it like, like basically two to one so two lowlights for every highlight we did, but today we're going to do about one to one so with her low lights. I still want to keep a lot of that natural in there, so we're just gon na kind of do some baby little lights in there today, instead of a baby light a baby low, but this is kind of something fun and different and it'll keep it really Natural for her kind of less chunky feeling and more on the natural side where it looks like these darker dimension pieces are just growing in so the big thing you just wan na make sure that you're fully saturating those pieces really well. Obviously this is a very dark formula, so just be careful, you don't want to get bleed marks down here either and so yeah, it's just good to ensure that. But this is one of her highlight pieces. You guys can see that we had lighting before there's a little bit of warmth in there, but not too bad, but because she wants to keep a lot of her natural and lightness in there. This is really important to make sure placement is really good, especially for this is almost like a reverse highlight again right, but we want to make sure the place is really good and again, I'm just using kind of that gdq. This is all gon na get toned out, and it's just gon na kind of enhance the gray as she has on her roots. So now for our next section, I'm going to get this whole section, because again, this is a little bit of lightness. We don't want to color that at all and then the next section I'm gon na take will be more of like a baby, little white type thing. So it's just kind of really key to know your placement and to understand where you're putting depth and where you're keeping lightness so that the client has dimension and it doesn't feel chunky. But it's just kind of a little bit different than a highlight. So you just got ta kind of pay attention to the placement and things so around her hairline. Normally these pieces, I would pick up and have be our baby lights, maybe highlights and just get really detailed around the hairline, but for her she doesn't like it when she pulls her hair back and sees so much gray, so we actually blend in some lowlights. So these are almost like baby lows around her face, so I always pick up these pieces now. The thing that you have to be really careful of is this is permanent, color, that you're putting in so you're gon na bleed marks. You can get a total spot. So you just have to be really careful and really precise, but again it feels like my little tiny teeth right here, then throw it in a foil and just kind of getting these little baby pieces in. There will really add this dimension around her hairline we're gon na. Do it one more little section right here: she's got all these kind of like little baby, hairs and stuff. So we'll put this up cuz again, we don't want to be solid black up there. Just really light and subtle just pick this little section up here and again: every client's hair line, it should be customized, nobody has the same hair line, nobody has the same baby hairs and even client's hair lines are gon na look different every time they come in. So making sure to really customize these hair lines and just give them. This extra detail makes a huge, huge difference in the way that the hair looks, and I always lock my foils in place right here, so that we ensure that we're not getting any like looseness or that it's going to slip. So now we're gon na work around her actual hairline right here and again we're doing those kind of baby little eyes and then right behind it. I'Ll actually do a highlight so keeping that contrast in there, and so it's not like black around her hairline, but also giving it that dimension back in there. And I love using these freshness from framer they're, very precise, and it allows me to get in there and stay controlled with a product and not feel like I'm moving anything around all right. So this is gon na, be our little highlight section here and you guys can see I'm taking a really wide section. Obviously, I would never do this with whitener, but because we're just kind of toning down that section, I want to make sure I'm getting all those little baby hairs, making sure to knock out a lot of that warmth and that thicker section is gon na. Be totally fine because again, this is more almost like a toner. It'S not light nerd. So if we were doing Lightner, I would never suggest taking that big of a section, but we can kind of do it in this instance. So then, right behind that I do all diagonal backs on her sides here. You guys can say that the whole Mohawk going down and then we do all diagonal backs until we kind of reach about this point. So I'm just going to do some really kind of fine baby lights break up that line you guys can see. This was an existing low light in there, but if I keep either really fine leaves, it allows it to grow up really nicely and it doesn't feel chunky which can happen in colors like this, because obviously we're doing such a dark, low light. In so much contrast. So we just got to make sure it doesn't look chunky. She doesn't want correlative bill chunks, going down her and put down our head so making sure to do it really baby, fine and just kind of keep that in mind again. Placement is pretty key in this kind of color. All right here is our final result. You guys can just see how blended it is and how everything just kind of really flows together and it looks so natural, but it also has kind of that pop of fun and it doesn't feel like old lady hair. So nobody wants to feel like old lady hair. This is something that's really fun and again. This is great for any kind of client through this transitioning or just wants to add something a little bit more fun to their gray, hair color, alright guys. Thank you. So much for watching this video, I hope it was helpful for you, like. I said this is something totally different than what I normally do. Kind of low lighting gray is something very different but, like I said, if you have a client that is wanting to transition to gray or has a client that wants to add a little bit more pop into her natural gray color. Idgie Threadgood: You have totally given me so much confidence to try hairdressing again. I hope you never stop making these tutorials.

istandsure: I love this! I am just beginning to transition to my natural gray color but would love to have this technique done on my hair in the future.

Jessica Alegre-Lota: 2 yrs ago I decided to embrace my gray. My lady did the same thing for my hair the lowlights and highlights to blend in the grey. She re did my hair every 6-8 wks. She did a terrific job like you did on this lovely lady. I haven’t seen her in a year because she moved but I still get compliments on my hair. Great video, thank you!

Tully Soulliere: I do hair and love to keep my gray haired clients inspired when they want to transition .This is really pretty thanks for showing us the fun! Have a good day.

HandWorks Artisan Soaps: I’m also working on letting my silver/gray grow in. I had a brown base with new growth of my natural silver. My hairstylist pretty much did what you did but I got no gray results on my highlights—she said she put a toner on of gray but it came out blonde. I was a bit bummed and she said I had to keep coming back. Does that sound right?

Moresunnydays: You’re the color master I’ve been looking for! I want to transition slowly to grey. I know nothing about hair coloring but I’ve tried to ask colirists how to look nice w/o looking old lady grey. It has cost a fortune; and I’ve got nothing. The supposedly best colorists, I feel, dont know what to do. Wish I could find you! This lady is beautiful. What I am wanting to do if I can find right colorist!

Angela Hagood: Great job! This is what I want for my gray hair! Awesome tutorial!

Jessica V: Love love your videos!! You make it so simple to follow!

April Lemons: This looks great. Very modern and definitely makes her look young and fresh!!!

jeanne morelli: Would love to see more lowlight toning in various gray levels. Like an all white client needing lowlights .great videos !

Therese White: That looks gorgeous on her! I always look forward to your videos, I learn so much from you! Much love from a fellow hairstylist!❤

katslo: I love this - I'm transitioning now. Giving me some great ideas

Stephanie F: Awesome! I grew out my gray hair for 7 months but it was such a bad grow out cold turkey so I dyed it back to my very dark brown. I’m now thinking of starting to fill in my out growth with low lights instead of full color. Do you think that would work? I loved my gray hair it was just so drastic and the ends we’re getting very orange! Thank you for the great video! You did an amazing job!

J. Doe: This was immensely helpful! Thank you so much. You are so kind. May God Bless you with abundance and prosperity for the impact you make on so many of us! :)

Yoli Rankin: Finally someone helping someone go Grey and look beautiful doing it!!! Love it!

O Luz: It turned out beautiful! Great job! Blessings!

Quick Works: That’s what I’m doing with my grey hair ...low lights. I really prefer that on me versus the all grey look. Each person is different in terms of how they accomodate all grey hair. A lot of it has to do with skin tone, facial structure, makeup and the color of the grey. My natural grey looks mousy and dull without the lowlights. Thanks for the video!

Maria Bravo: This is exactly what I keep telling hairdressers to do and they can’t understand!!! You are a genius!!!!

Maci Bell: YES YES YES!!! it is so awesome to learn more than blonde hair!! i love blonde but i also love that you are teaching more of other hair!!! shows how well rounded of a stylist you are and it is much appreciated from this cosmo student over here in texas!! :)

Ode to Odette: That's beautiful. I just grew mine out and cut it into a pixie cut when my path was white and broad enough

Mary Beth Arnold: This was super helpful! Thanks for sharing your tips!

JD Blatz: I loved this video and did this recently to my client and she loved it!!!

Jamil Gotcher: I love this low light video,! Results were great! My Dad is 72 and he likes his hair to look like it has some grey but he doesn't like it to look completely grey. I also darken his mustache with an eyebrow pencil for blondes I got at the dollar store for when he wants to look a little younger for his photography photoshoots, he's a professional photographer. He and I both look about 8 years younger than our real age because we only want a little grey not complete grey.

Barbara: Love it, love it, love it, I’m showing this to my hairdresser for sure ❣️❣️

monkeeCnDew: Thanks for this video Jamie. I have let me grey hair grow in and intend to keep it. Nice to see a technique that helps it look fresh

Rocklyn Hamilton: I bet your clients love to see you! Your talent and your personality are amazing! Subscribed a couple days ago, and am exploring your videos. Great Job here!

Cordelia Bradley: Love this so much ✨Hair extensions can boost your self esteem by giving you added length and volume. My Zalas do this for me, absoltly obsessed with that brand!!

Tracy G: Excellent technique! Beautiful results!

Ic Threez: Love, Love, Love more natural hair choices!! :)

Crystal Cloutier: Purchased the ZALA seamless 20inch clip in set in the shade #613 Beachy Blonde. These extensions are super thick and so soft! Being a hairdresser I have come across many different extensions but these are definitely superior over other brands as they are so thick from root to tip and give you so much hair, making it easy to blend into your natural hair. Would highly recommend!

Scarlett Green: Purchased the ZALA seamless 20inch clip in set in the shade #613 Beachy Blonde. These extensions are super thick and so soft! Being a hairdresser I have come across many different extensions but these are definitely superior over other brands as they are so thick from root to tip and give you so much hair, making it easy to blend into your natural hair. Would highly recommend!

Shannon Reed: Your channel has literally changed my hair game! Thanks a million!!

Karen McDoanld: I Love the way you teach and how you section the hair! My client has all gray in the front salt and pepper in the back she wants a change what do you recommend!!

Lee Townes: Love the video!! I am a 69 year old black female. I don't like my hair all gray, so boring. Want to add highlights or also lowlights. Love what you did to her hair. I wear my hair short and spikey. Just hope I can find a salon to work with me. Thank you again.❤

Tracy: This is very nice. Something for me to keep in mind should I decide not to cover all my silver. I think I would like like something more chunkier for myself. My temples grow out long and silver like Lily Munster. I cover it still though. Love to see more gray hair ladies or gents.

pom mom: It's mesmerizing to watch you! You are amazing to know the right color, etc. etc., also, I agree about the music, it's hard for people with hearing impaired and hearing aids to hear people talking and playing background music as well.

Cherie Davis: I wish I would have known how much warmth I was going to pull when I got highlights to blend my gray hair. It's really wonderful that you accentuate what people naturally have. Is it possible to re-highlight my highlights and then tone them gray?

Jennifer Hammerschmidt: Love, love, love this tutorial!!!

Myrna Garrastegui, REALTOR: So beautiful- great job Jamie, thx for sharing with us!!!

Courtney B: They looks great! Question: Are you worried if you low light so many times with weaving out only the previous low lights that the ends will end up all dark? I hope that made sense! Lol.

T. S.: This particular color concept looks great on this client! Seems like a brilliant way to add dimension. The truth is "some" people look okay to possibly great with gray hair and some woman really look really unattractive/unappealing with their gray out. People won't tell you the truth, so you have to critically assess yourself. Yes, it may be easier, less bother and hassle, less expensive, but realize people size up a person by their appearance (hair) immediately, for better or worse. Silver usually looks good, but not all hair grays to silver.

SRFinSLO: What a beautiful, natural look!

jlcdoll: I love the way you started the foil. It’s different for me, to work down the head and put the foils in from behind. I wish I could see how you complete the Mohegan ... great video!!

Kimberly O’Connor: I love this. It’s beautiful.

Anna Ibarra: Love this and I waiting a couple more years to go grey, so I hope my hairdresser can do something like this as going grey with fine hair makes me look bald.

Jane Farquharson: Fantastic how you transformed her hair with the grey made my mind up to get mins done fantastic good on you and client

mim hayward: Something I used to do many many years ago, after my apprenticeship.. I became a mobile hairdresser, and often converted many into having a fine lolight, so they could relax with the regrowth. Loved your work though, very enjoyable I watch, and to see such professionalism. Brilliant..

nukya: You did such a wonderful job! How many visits did it take for the look to be complete? What should I ask for if I want to do this at a salon?

clara santo: Ficou lindo

Jennifer Stinson: Thank you! More videos like this please! :)

Darcus Goodwin: This is what I need! Thanks!

Myrna Garrastegui, REALTOR: Great job - Absolutely GORGEOUS!!!!

Tiffany Hill: Wow wow wow!!! That is the most beautiful head of hair I’ve ever seen!!!!! Great job

Silver Mont: Super educative video clip .. thanks for sharing it does look amazing ! ❤️

Hair by Kristen Cryer: Love this! So creative and spunky looking

Indra Correa: Im so happy for this video, almost every video about this topic is on blonde hair , i have brown hair and im going natural but had no idea how to blend my hair, Thank you, thank you!!!

Gallardohairstudio: I'm going have to do this . Thanks for sharing the details . Really appreciate .

SuzanneR: exactly how I want my hair to look...thanks

Michelle Eldering: Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

Gracie to the Max: I’ve been using REDKEN SEQ, Fusion and Chromatics for 15 years (Aveda and Schwartzkopf prior) how do you like the Kenya color? What other color lines do you (or anyone reading this) like? I just started doing hair on my own after 21 years.

Virginia Mathews: Very pretty! ... and holy moly you’ve got a lot of different brands of color in your stock! I’d love to see a vid on what you use and why

Connie Pleasant: Looks great much more depth to the whole look

Annie Knits & Crochets: That is what I want to do in order to transition into gray. I want to grow in my natural colour. I’m not all gray yet.

Janet Pasciak: Why don’t more hair stylists know this method!! Every time I ask for help with growing out my grays they tell me I just have to decide to commit to having ugly color for a while!! Ugg!! So glad I stumbled onto your channel

Jules Garcia: Great job! Something I should consider later, like when I getore sslt&pepper. At this time, I only want to enhance my virgin dark brown/gray hair. No bleaching for me. What idea can you suggest? Your my 2nd opinion, as I have a consultation with a colorist next month.

Linda Richardson: This is beautiful!

Ruth Ireland-mason: Great job. I'm feeling a little washed out. My question to you is... how to add highlights / low lights to my total gray hair.

sparklingsilvers: Hi Jamie.. wanna ask you does highlights and lowlights work on salt and peppery hair or can be done on hair gray more than 90 or 100%?

Mika Anderson: Love, Love, Love!! Did you end up toning the rest of the light hair with the Shades formula, or left it out? Thx for sharing!! ❤️

Melissa Culpepper: Great video! Gorgeous color! Would you mind showing the brand of foils you’re using here?

Sue Scott: Wow! Just beautiful!

Rachelle Spier: Wow the end result was beautiful!!!

Muñoz: I am not going to lie the background music is distracting. Other than that, a good tutorial video.

Jeepergirl: Terrific application, love the color. I was trying to let my hair grow out but decided it was not for me, just made me look older. May try this application in the future. Thanks for sharing

Susan Rodriguez: love the way you explain everything you are doing music didn’t bother me at all

Sheila: Great way to transition..

mymusicmurci: Wow. That came out beautiful.

T L: GOOD JOB, LOVE IT

Noemi Salgado: I wanted to transition into grey last year, but people at the salon just fried my hair, so I decided to cut my hair short and just let my hair grow and only trim the tips. I was so mad at the beautician plus I had to pay, I was so mad at them don't ever go to Hair Cuttery, unless you know what the person is doing . I liked this video I will show it to my hairstylist different stylist next time.

waww2010: Would someone please list the exact products used? I'd like to take the list to my stylist, but I don't understand or speak salon-language.

Mag Ma: Beautiful!

Beata Spiewak: Looks like you have done a very good job Have a great day

Traci Cybulski: I’m a HUGE fan! Even Balayaged my hair strawberry since I loved yours so much! Just curious but how come u mixed a level 1 and 4? Why not just have used a 2 or 3?

s. pierce: Wow!! That looks great!!

KM: That’s beautiful.❤️

cutey pie: I have the same hair color .It's more healthy this way then doing the whole head. You won't ever get that skunk look either.

AniMac61: It would be nice to see the before and after at the end of your video. I’m impressed with your technique and am sending this to my stylist to see if she can do this for my hair as I’m on the going grey journey. Thanks for posting!

Mayuno Murata: I love this!! I have gray hair and been looking for this!! How would it fade-away?

K Wood: Beautiful . Thank you

patricia russell: Yeah I’ll skip the music it’s very irritating when you’re so talented don’t mess it up with music specially the wrong kind

Rain: Just curious about the crown /mohawk section...why start at the top the crown and work down? My concern would be clipping foils up and out of the way might cause slip or bleeds. I did it that way, once, as a new stylist and was snubbed and mocked for it. It almost seemed awkward and they saud I "looked like a newbie doibg it tgat way." (It was a bad environment). Please vindicate me with an explanation. The other stylists, literally, had a cow when I did it. For me, I was controlling that top veil of hair for dimension al coloring. (I can't always plan it out in my head and have it work. ) Why did you approach it that way?

Egypt *: Awesome technique n color I'm slowly growing my grays n i really like that color ☺

Martha: Beautiful!

nessamaine: Beautiful Job!

Patricia Taylor: You did a great job!!! Thank You for sharing!!

Ghostiiie kun: Omg I am definitely going to practice this technique on a mannequin head! I just think I am a bit confused on the color theory behind using 9v for the highlight .

GoldenRay OfCentralSun: That looks great!
