Hey guys welcome back to my channel or welcome if you're new, for those of you who don't know me, my name is Sam, I'm a professional hairstylist and today's video. Finally, I'm gon na be going over toning, I'm going to explain what toning is, how to do. It we're just gon na bring it back to the basics, so whether you're, currently in cosmetologist school you're, a newer, stylist or maybe you're, not even a stylist, but color is just something that interests you and you just want to learn more about hair. This video is for you by the way my dog is on the couch next to me right now, he's like in and out of sleep. So if you can hear him breathing snoring whining, I apologize, he looks pretty comfy, so I don't want to disturb him. Okay, so what is toner toner gloss glaze? These are some terms that you might hear people say and for the most part, generally speaking, they are all referring basically to the same thing. So a toner is a demi-permanent color. You can tone here with permanent color, but again we're just we're keeping it basics here. So it's a demi-permanent color. You mix it with a very, very low developer, so that it is a deposit only and the main purpose is for it is to refresh color to neutralize color and to get rid of any unwanted tones now, as far as how long it lasts. That depends on the person's hair porosity, how frequently they wash their hair if they use heat on it, etc, but typically on average. I would say it lasts about six weeks anywhere from like four to eight, I would say so say your lightening somebody's hair. You apply the lightener. All that's doing is revealing the underlying pigment. So when you go to wash that lighter out, you're gon na be left with either red orange gold. Yellow it's gon na be an ugly brassy unflattering color, all of those really beautiful nice tones that we see the white platinum, blondes, the baiji blondes, the mushroom brown, the caramel, the this that whatever these are all tones that are achieved with toner. If your goal is silver hair, you can't just lighten your hair and make it silver. You need a toner in order to achieve that silver tone. By the way, I forgot to mention this, but toner isn't just used for pre lightened hair like it's not just for blonds, even if you're a brunette and you've never colored your hair before you can use a toner to just rich it up your color make it Look a little bit more refreshed, add more of like a warmer tone to it, a cooler tone you can use it if you're a brunette, a redhead. Anything like that, it's not just for blonds! Now, when you go to tone the hair, you can't just select a color swatch and be like. Okay, that's the final result. I want I'm just gon na throw that on their hair BAM, I'm gon na get that result. Take it back to color 101 you're starting color, plus the color you apply is what will give you that final result, so, unless you're applying that color to white hair you're, not gon na get the exact color? That'S in that color swatch. You need to kind of formulate and understand what colors you're working with what you need to neutralize in order to get whatever final result you want so now, let's bring it back to elementary art class. Okay, we're gon na look at a color wheel, so you need to understand which colors neutralize each other. The easiest way to do that is look at the color wheel and see what colors are on opposite sides of the wheel from each other, so purple and yellow neutralize each other blue and orange orange / gold neutralize each other red and green neutralize each other. So first determine what is the unwanted pigment that you have in the hair that you are looking to neutralize? Maybe your client has green hair and they're looking to just be a natural, neutral light brown color. You would need to use something with red in it to neutralize that green first, because if you just threw a brown on top of that green you're, still gon na see that green peeking through it's gon na, be a really mucky disgusting color. So to neutralize it, you would use the complementary color of green, which is red and vice versa. If they have red in their hair - and they don't want to see the red anymore, they want to be a neutral natural Brown. You would something with green in it to neutralize that red to cancel it out, so to speak, if you're lightening somebody's hair and their goal is to be a really cool tone, light blonde, you would lighten them as much as possible. You'D get to a pale yellow and in order to neutralize that yellow and get the really cool tone, silvery tone you would use purple because purple is on the opposite side of the color wheel from yellow. Now the most important thing to understand. When you're toning hair, you have to tone at the level that you're at or darker, so let's look at a hair level chart right. We have levels one through ten, one being the darkest like black and then ten being the lightest blonde say. Your goal is to get your client to a really light platinum blonde and you go to lift their hair and you only are able to lift them to a level. Eight. Well, guess what you can't just take a level ten toner and throw it on their hair and hope that you're gon na be able to remove all of those warm tones with that toner. It'S not gon na work. You put a level ten on someone's hair. That'S a level eight: it's not gon na do jack, [, __ ]. You need to either use a level eight color or something darker. Now, if you are looking to remove brassy tones, I would suggest toning darker toners are just adding color, so you're, not removing the brassiness you're, just neutralizing the color. So that's going to end up making it darker. The only way that you can actually remove brassy tones is by lightening the hair, more lightening it to a higher level, so that you're taking those brassy tones out because remember when you're lightening the hair, you are stripping it you're. Removing all of these underlying layers of color, so another example say your client wants to be a really ashy Brown. They want that mushroom Brown kind of tone. That'S really popular, so you look at this color and you're like okay. That'S like a level seven. Can you just lift their hair to a level seven and then throw that toner on top and expect it to be the cool tone that they want? No, because if you only lift their hair to a level, seven they're still gon na be way too much brassiness. There again, let's look at the hair level chart the underlying pigment. Level-7 has a lot of gold and orange in it, so if you're lifting them to that orange e-gold level 7, the only way that you can make that color look more cool toned is by toning. It darker, if you lift them to a level 7 and then tone them at a level 7 they're still going to be warm. So, in order to get those really ashy cool tones, you need to lift them more to like a level 9 or 10, remove as much brassiness as possible. First and then tone down same thing with those dark silver colors right people bring in photos of that and they think oh, the color looks dark. So I don't have to light in my hair that much wrong. You still need to lighten the hair to a level 10 and then tone down, because you need to remove all of that brassy underlying pigment. First, you also really need to understand the color line that you're working with every color line is gon na be a little different. So you really need to understand the base of that color, and what I mean by that is some color lines there. Ash colors are a great, whereas in other color lines and ash can be a blue base. So if you're going to tone someone's hair that has a lot of orange and gold in it, you want to make sure that you're using something that has a blue base in it. If you go to use a gray ash, it's not gon na work correctly, and it's just gon na give you kind of a weird color. So that's another thing to keep in mind, especially when you're just kind of starting out and you're still trying to learn. Color reference the chart that comes with your color line. It can't get very confusing with all the different numbers and letters so reference the chart read over it study it learn it memorize it because when you understand the product that you're working with it'll make the whole process a lot easier. One thing I want to address that some of you guys may be wondering about is those expressed toners if you've ever gone into Sally's and you've just picked up like the Wella t18 toner. There'S a ton of lines that have expressed toners Pravana, I know, has them dye tain. I think so. Those are toners that don't have a level attached to them. It'Ll just have a color or some kind of base like wheat, blonde beige blonde violet stuff. Like that majority of the time, depending on what I'm doing, I don't usually like to use those types of toners personally, because they're a little bit more unpredictable. You don't have as much control and they're a little bit stronger than necessary in my opinion, because they're meant to just kind of like be a one-size-fits-all and just kind of tone: hair, that's anywhere from like a level 7 to a 10 and so depending on, where You'Re at you might over tone the hair and the hair can take too much of that toner and ends up just not looking good or how you wanted it. So I feel like if you can get an understanding of how to properly tone and how to use toners at different hair levels. That'S gon na be your best bet and it's gon na give you the most control over your final result. So I think that is pretty much it for this video. I hope that I explained everything well enough. I it's one of those things where it can get really confusing. Color is one of those things where, for some people it comes really easily and it just all like make sense and clicks and then for other people. It'S a totally foreign language and it's hard to just sit here and talk to a camera and not be able to like be in person and answer whatever questions you have. If you guys liked this video - and you would like to see more color videos from me - let me know by giving the video a thumbs up. It helps my channel out a lot and I really appreciate it and make sure you're subscribed when you hit the bell notification, so you don't miss the next time I upload, and hopefully I will see you guys in my next video bye

Victoria Aristegui Actriz: This video needs more likes. Great explanation, let's hope I can fix the mess I did to my hair this quarantine!

SunnyDuhLight: Love this! If I have unwanted orange tones in my bleached hair, would you recommend me feathering bleach on the orange tones and adding conditioner to the lighter parts so that they do not break off or lighten even more? Yellow Rose: This is the first hair video that I've seen in a long time that actually gave a lot of great information. Many of these hair gurus do a lot of talking without saying much. I learned so much in this video and its helped me out a lot. Thank you so much for the useful information from debunking color theory and toning, to what the latest products are in the hair biz. You're awesome! Subbed.

Tarot London: This was a great video, so simply explained thanks!!

Abbey Johnson: Okay I cannot even express how amazing this video is. I’m a licensed cosmetologist but I don’t practice anymore so sometimes I need refreshers & this video is so great. Straight forward, professional, super easy to understand.... you explain everything SO WELL. New subscriber, keep the amazing videos coming!

Mhairi: Very informative & easy to understand video. You're a brilliant teacher! Really is easy to understand now. I've watched so many videos and read so many articles that make it far more complicated than it needs to be. Basics first then play around with varying it! Thanks a mil ❤ Ps am I right in thinking that if the hair has only lifted to say a level 6 (from e.g. a level 2), then a level 5 semi or demi permanent colour would work best to get rid of orange brassniess? Would an ash/ cool based colour be better than a golden tone or would it not matter?

Kathya Arce: Omg thank you so much for this! color definitely doesn't come naturally to me, I'm constantly studying. We use wella at my salon. I would love to see a color theory video! like the basics

myra banh: Thank you explained so clear! now I know-how the clear gloss work and the difference between a regular toner & express toner. it's wonderful Ty

Kayla Lowe: Watching this while I'm waiting to head in to work! I'm currently an assistant for a salon with 18 stylists and I start their new talent program in February where I'll be preparing to go behind the chair full time! I love you and your videos so much! So glad to have found you

George Boesger: Hey!Great video on the use of toners. I have a client who has experimented with various colors from Walmart and other stores. Her natural outgrowth is a mushroomy 7.1 , but her overprocessed hair is a level 8 or so orangy brassy color. How would you suggest correcting the brassiness to get far closer to her natural 7.1? Thanks.

Geo: Best explanation of all the question you have regarding toners in one video! Thank you so much!!

Zoey Gibson: Thank you! You explained that so well!! Toner has been so confusing to me up until I watched your video!

kikwangjonghyun joonieleohong: I have a question please answer. First of all, thank you so much for such an informative video, I finally understand what everything means and got lots of knowledge on this. I understand that toner can only last a few weeks. I want to rid of brass. But also, I want to completely take out red tones (or at least rid most of them) from a bad hair job. I want an ash color. From what I understood, after only a few weeks your hair can start to get brassy again. But let's say I want to go from warm brown (red undertones) to ash brown. Can I only do it once, and then eventually as time goes by yes the color will fade a bit and get dull, but will it stay close to its original color resulted from toner, or will it start to get red again? If I can explain it in a simpler way, I have a warm brown with red undertones (some yellow too). I want ash brown. I used toner, it turns more ashy. After a while, color vibrancy will fade, but will the red/yellows start coming back? Or will it become brassy just not as red as it was

Danielle S.: This was a really great video it was the best explanation of haircolor theory I’ve seen so far. Especially for someone like me that’s not a stylist but I have very odd coloring which makes it hard to match extensions, wigs or anything else to it so I have to kind of have to color most of my hair myself (A lot of carrot top jokes have been involved). Anyway thanks again ✌❤️!

Rosie Gibson: Thank you!! This made so much sense! And no hairdresser or hair product sales person could ever explain this to me. Thanks so much

Vanny: So helpful , I just went back to finish cosmetology I was super rusty. Thank you this is extremely helpful.

Tahira Bell: I've been searching and following many professional hairstylists to learn more about colouring my hair, understand the colour wheel, and so on and so forth. I've learned some, and I do appreciate their talent, but you, you explained it SO WELL. I can't thank you enough.

favo63: This was so helpful thank you ❤️ it all makes sense now

CORY SECRETS: This was GOLD. I always had my doubts about toner. Thanks for clearing up my brain fog!

Amber H: Sam if you could do some example swatches someday that would be awesome. I also love your “do hair with me” videos. Visual aid always appreciated.

Ebtisam Alghamdi: I’ve never added any comment before on ANY videos that I’ve watched! However, I really need to tell you that this video is really really appreciated. It helped me A LOT. Thank you so much for using such simple words to describe everything. And the time spent to explain things as well. Thank you!

From Frances With Love: Súper helpful, exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Stasha Gindra: Soooo helpful and informative!!! Thank you so much ❤

Ashleigh •: Your videos are extremely helpful!

HeadBandit: Months after the lockdown, I've been researching on levels and toning. I've read and watched videos on it and didn't understand til now. I've seen some advice to others telling them they must bleach to higher level to fix the tone but I didn't understand that. I thought you could just neutralize the tones at a level 7 or 8 as long as you use a level 7 color. I still don't understand how to tone to a more neutral or warm tone rather than ash.

Luisa C: I started watching your videos last year and honestly I have been loving them so much! I have always had a passion for make up, doing hair, eyebrows and nails. I have always done nails, eyebrows, hair, makeup on myself and I have done makeup and eyebrows on friends and they always end up loving them (I don’t touch their hair unless it’s something simple as curling it or braids because I am not a professional and don’t want to ruin, fry and do horrible damage to someone else’s hair) my boyfriend has always told me you are so good at this why don’t you just go to cosmetology school? You would probably do so great! And I have always told him how I don’t think it’s for me because I won’t make that much money but honestly watching your videos have made me realized that maybe I should do it, because why not? It could be a great thing!

Morgue_Ann: Watching as I’ve got protein filler in getting ready to use t14. Thanks this was informative❤️

Patricia Cortese: Very great intro video to color and toners. So well explained.

Alexandra Ferrer: Thank YOU. You made feel like I can actually put some highlights around my face during covid. If I mess up, welllll my colorist will get paid more to fix it, when we can venture into salons again. Gracias.

Beauty by Fatema: Thank you! This helped clear up so much, I would love a follow up with formula examples

Terri B: Great video! How long should you wait to wash your hair like normal, after you’ve toned your hair?

Dani: So I have naturally dark brown hair. I lightened it earlier this year and used ion brilliance titanium semi permanent color to take out the brassiness and it worked beautifully! However, I'm wanting to try demi permanent this time. I believe I'm a level 7 or 8 (mix of orange and yellow). Do you recommend I tone with a 7 or darker (like a 6)?

Alex Sancen: Thank you for your thorough and perfect explanation. I love your energy! I'm not a professional and I'm trying to bleach a strip of my daughters dark brown hair and dye it pink. Do I need to add toner after I bleach and before I add the color? What brand of toners do you recommend? At Sally they gave me the Wella T18. Thank you xoxo!

Shoppin Sher: Thank you! You obviously have a very good understanding of all this. I hope you’ll have more videos.

Go Crazy AhhHahah Go Stupid: Okay but when are the hairdressers gonna actually say what toner brands and stuff to use

blu she crab: very good info & easy to understand! Thank you!!

Rosann Ali: You're a great teacher Keep up the great work.

Nat: Could you make a part 2 talking about how you go about formulating your toners and what are some of your favs formulas? thnx

m ap: You are a natural teacher . Thank you so much I wish you much success!!!!

Kyla Rae: I start school this week, and have watched so so so many videos of hair being lightened. I've never understood the tone talk/terms till now. Thank you!

Mona Singh: Thank you for explaining so well

Deanna Morgan: That was the Very Best explanation on understanding colour theory, levels , tones in the hair and toners. I so appreciated your video , I had to subscribe after listening to you . Your a fabulous teacher, very easy to understand for beginners Thankyou

KALEIDO jess: Thank you, this is so helpful. ✨

C J: This is amazing! De-mistifying the world of toners.

Della Creates: This video was so helpful! Thank you!

Em L.: Finally a video with quality information!! Thank you!

Mo Mo: Wow I really needed to see this. Going to Sally's tomorrow to get some toners, just dyed my hair "ash blonde" but more of a "golden carrot" at the moment. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Say Dellvea: You explained beautifully! Just subbed

Mitzi Straup: Thank you for making this easy to understand.

crackerjack4u: I ran into the toner issue when I first started bleaching my hair from medium brown. I bleached to a level 8, and decided to give my hair a rest. I thought, "No problem, I'll tone it with T-18 and bleach it again in a month or so." LOL it ended up the nastiest muddy color ever. I went back to Sally's and they said try this one with an ash tone in it. LOL the ash in it turned the mud into a green muddy swamp, so yeah, toners can really do some funky crap if you're trying to color lighter than your hair.

michelleaverymua: I love your videos ! I'm in school now and I just want to show some of these girls your channel because you really know how to break things down & plus I love your energy and vibe. I'd love to work beside you and learn some things!

zell0897: This was a super helpful video. Thanks!!

Epiphany Child: Thank you so so much!! You have no idea how much this has helped me! Also you should become a cosmetology instructor ❤️

Denisa Kondi: Hi Sam, loved your video! When applying toner, is it ok to apply on scalp? I have fine hair and just want to know what should be avoided.

havefunwhileucan: Answered every question i had thank you

Jay Jay: Great explanation. I have been researching on how to color my own hair from black to silver for years now. I have never seen a video that explains what toner does.

Khoshe100: This clears things up a bit. My hair has a lot of red tones in it and i wanted to be just an Ash brown. So bleached my hair 3 times and there were still orange tones in it at the top of my head. I could’ve gotten it to platinum or level 10 but I’d have up to the developer to a 40 from 30 which i knew would just fry my hair. But the hair at the back of my head was a10. However, when i tried to tone it with the Wella T14 toner, it turned my hair a grayish, purplish, blue colour. Still not sure why

Carra: Thank you so much, for many years I've been experimenting with out proper knowledge. Thank you so much this makes a looooootttttt of sense!

Jenny Raub: watched soooooooo many toner tutorials and this one was the best so far!!

MILLY: This is actually a masterpiece. You make me wanna go from psychology to cosmetology & girl I graduate next semester BRAVO!

Fergie Fergus: I just did my sons long hair during corona V. ...Bleached it and used an ash toner. Winged it. I've never done it before but it turned out awesome. A Kurt Cobain look.

Cynthia Powelson: Hi Sam, do you recommend toning the hair wet or dry and how long?
