How Dark-Skinned Women Feel About the World's Obsession with Skin Color | Dark Girls | OWN

Speaker 1, When I was younger, I was a little lighter than I am.. So in Ghana people said I was fair., That's what they call you when you have, I guess a lighter complexion. And then they used to call me'' obruni'', which is the term used for people from our side., And I really resisted it, because I felt it othered Me., It didn't make me Ghanaian enough., So I actually wanted to be darker.. When I went to the States to do my graduate program, I once had my coursemate African-American referred to me.. She was saying, oh, I have this friend. She's as dark as you., And that was the first time I'd been called dark. And I thought oh, this is very interesting. Because back at home, I'm supposed to be light. And here in the States, I'm dark., And that Was the first time I really paid attention to the different way that color is talked about there. SPEAKER 2, You probably ask a Ghanaian woman and she wouldn't be sure that it's even affecting her in any way. But from just being told that wow you're looking nice Today., Are you fairer, [, LAUGHS, ] And most people also tried to tell me that I'm beautiful I'm fair. And I'm like no. I'm kind of brown., I'm chocolate., I'm dark., You know I'm fine being dark. And it affects us in very subtle ways that we don't See. And then we in turn teach our children that. SPEAKER, 3 Growing up. I realized that all our [ INAUDIBLE ] have people who are lighter as opposed to people who are darker., And this would be over 10 years ago, but there was something on TV.. The person said [ NON-ENGLISH SPEECH, ] ... It means a lighter skinned person. If you are in bed with her and the lights are off, you'll still be able to see her., And I think this became a very popular thing that people were talking about.. So everybody wants [, NON-ENGLISH SPEECH, ] or a light skinned woman, because then you don't have to go to so much trouble to see her in the dark right - And this is where my personal consciousness about how desirable being light skinned is for people.

Darkshadow: Medium brown black people can have a light skin experience or dark skin experience depending on who they are around.

StopProtestingForDisrespectfulBlackMen: Nowadays black men fighting racism, while black women fighting racism, colorism and sexism.

Tranquil Shores Travel agency LLC: ‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️I was born in America and my skin is darker than most chocolate, but I love myself!

Nana Ashanti: Ghanaians are really obsessed with color and shades but for whatever odd reason, people don't see it as a social problem.

Kathy M: At some point, all of us will have to do our individual work while contributing to the collective to get rid of this "stigma" against darker skin and obsession with skin color. I'm glad that we are now talking about it more openly. But at the same time, as we move away from this collective "sickness", we cannot keep investing excessive emotion and energy into this. The Babylon system literally feeds off of anger, anguish, sadness, confusion, pleading and desperation in the same way that a mosquito feeds off of blood. We all must be committed to loving ourselves as we are and supporting each other as we see and experience ourselves in our own uniqueness.

Chanel5: Soo I keep getting the same lesson. You better love yourself in whatever package you come. People seem to always want to size you up based on their hang ups.

R P: Some people call them light, some people call them dark but I call them extremely beautiful. It's a tragedy that these women are uncomfortable in their own skin tones, I wish they could see their own beauty as clearly as I can

Real KR: The first lady who spoke is right. In Africa we don't see mixed people as black(the one drop rule is not a thing) so therefore the shades are only for black will differ compared to the USA. Someone like Gabriella union=medium brown, Megan good=light skinned and Viola Davis= dark skinned.

Colourcollider: I wish people would talk more about how beautiful black women are❤️

Bria Barrows: This lady is gorgeous

Chanel5: The other thing is why do we not hear these conversations amongst men as much ! Light skin men in black culture are considered pansy or less street. But light skin women in same community is highly esteemed ???

Ms Summer 07: In the words of Kanye, " they made us hate ourselves and love their wealth." They told us a lie about ourselves and as ppl of color we believed it. The process of loving yourself requires a lot unlearning.

Gayle Coghiel: Ever heard of the paper bag test? It used to be a thing some mother's did to the women who came home with their son to get married. Match a paper bag or lighter meant you passed the paper bag test.

Mary Malloy: She is Beautiful.

Song Jones: My husband is from Sierra Leone. They are extremely fascinated by my light skin complexion. When I first met him, he would say, "I am very, very black. Are you sure you're ok with my black color? "

E Rust: Everyone needs to study history, of as many cultures as possible. This is where this light/dark issue comes from. The darker the skin means your out in the sun, a lot, which meant you’re a laborer. It meant PEASANT, servant, slave. It meant you were not the upper class. Upper class, no matter what ethnicity or geographical location, were lighter. No labor or servitude. That’s been forgotten through out mans history. It’s also morphed. This goes on as we see today, not just with Africans but with India, Japan and many cultures. The bigger problem that’s been with us for time in memorial is CLASSISM. Our perception of beauty stems from it. And it’s the biggest factor in discrimination around the world.

Kalagenesis Radio: 1:35 is a knockout beauty

DJ Born Peace Allah: One of the most beautiful Woman I have ever seen before was a Woman that was purple dark. This was at Wal Mart. Man she was fine. I think the color thing is mostly Western/ European teaching. Like today mostly in Media/Internet/ and what is depicted on TV a lot of times is lighter is better (not all media/internet/TV but yall know what I mean. Most Black Men don't care if you are Purple dark, Brown or Light Skin if you fine you fine.

Teresa Rattray: I think Ghanaian women are beautiful.

savannah scott: Romans 8:18 “The pain you’ve been feeling can’t compare to the joy that is coming!” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Whatever is going on right now, have faith, your situation will get better. :) Jesus bless anyone reading this and have a great day!!✨

Dontaye Smith: Why doesn’t anyone ever acknowledge how light skin men are less favored over darkskin men but light skin woman are more favored over darkskin woman ? Why do people pay so much into skin and not personality and things that are important in a person not just color

Jamaya TheQueen: Being light skinned is desirable in our society it sucks being dark skinned myself but that’s how it is

Bee W: The Bible says God is not partial. Our first parents Adam and Eve had the Gene's to produce children if all colors. We are all mixed. Variety is the spice of life. In my youth I have been called high yellow, black skinned, brown, like I really cared. My mother never talked about color, because it didn't matter. Now that I study the Bible, where does it talk about color or races being important. A TRUE Christian follows in Jesus footsteps, race should not matter. A true christian recognizes that we are all brothers and sisters. I always raised my children to be the person they are, not to worry about what ignorant people in this world think. Instead of people worrying about what people look like, talk like, etc. The most important thing they should be worrying about is their relationship with Almighty God, and what he thinks about their behavior.

Moore.aiesha604: I'm very dark right now because it's summer but I'm usually this lady's complexion. I don't this this lady is considered dark. They could've chose some one who is dark for real and not just in the sunmer sorry if I said too much

Mr. Red: Intresting perspective.

g4do: Damn she's gorgeous

Danny: Beautiful sistas!

Alex Mcnab: Just live ur life

Nnamdi X revolutionary: Imma just be honest with it. I love dark skin women love them to death. I want to love you all has a black man. But why won't yall love me back

Missez G: 1:58 her Sisterlocks are gorgeous. Anyone interested in this hairstyle?

PK YT: You're brown skin not dark skin

logan b: she looks like a friends mom

EdwardNewgate: white skin is gods' feat

BH Capitol: This is so dumb. Who cares about your skin tone. Just ignore people. I’m a dark male and it doesn’t bother me. Life goes on.

Sweets99 tsts: So sad i cant hate neither my dad side white in my mother side black in indian in what so crazy i want to a all white school where everyone had maids in the classroom...but never had a issue with none

Kalagenesis Radio: 2022? Why are we talking about this? Sheesh

Dawud: Let’s deal with black issues here where we live

Rambo Mlg: Ask God

Boitumelo Thibela: She's not dark...

hot grits: Who is she ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Famous dre: Does she know she's brownskin

A'VYONE: If you can’t see your woman when the lights are off CUT THE LIGHTS ON WTF

Anna TevesBanzon: I'm not African or dark skinned, but I noticed this even in the Oscar's mayhem. I noticed that if Chris Rock was light skinned, that slap would have been very visible and red and would have been seen for the severity that it was.

Demonwater Demonwater: Women get lighter sentences yo don’t go to jail in the first place

Nice Guy: The girl at 1:50 is very pretty even tho she is very dark.
