00:00 Heather Lee of HairClub welcomes Shavell and Porshia to HairClub’s inspiring ‘Let’s Talk’ series.

00:30 Just about every woman can relate to the connection between women and hair.

01:00 Many women can trace it back to early childhood, when their mothers styled their hair and then later styling it individually.

01:30 Practice makes perfect and eventually after trying different styles, a signature style emerges.

01:40 A signature hairstyle creates a polished look and when that goes away, it can be very unsettling, especially to women.

01:50 Shavell, having gone through cancer, found herself facing hair loss and without her signature hairstyle.

02:10 Hair has a strong influence on women’s perceptions of themselves, creating a sense of presence and style.

02:31 When a woman’s hair changes, she must often redefine her appearance, attitude and how she feels.

02:51 Women’s hair bears a strong influence on how much social interaction a woman has in her life, so it plays a significant role in connecting in community and with friends and family.

03:10 Hair is part of a woman’s identity, which was the case with Porshia.

03:30 When she had her son, she began losing her hair, which caused feelings of inadequacy and unexpected insecurities.

03:58 She appreciated the confidence having great hair gave her, and especially enjoyed having a lot of hair especially as a Black woman. It had always been part of her identity.

04:30 Thankfully, when women do lose their hair, there are more options for hair loss solutions than ever before.

04:50 Both Shavell and Porshia are excited about the versatile ways women can express themselves through their hairstyles.

HairClub. Love your hair. Live your life™.

Hi, my name is Heather Lee and I'm the director of marketing communications and operations at HairClub.. I am so happy to have you join this session of Let's Talk, ... Everything Hair. Joining me today is Shavell McPherson and her sister Porshia McPherson-Stamps. So happy to have you both. Thank you. Thank you. Thank., I'm so glad to be here. So happy to be here.. Yes, absolutely. And we go way back 20 years.. That’S right. We go way back. Way, back.. Definitely with the hair.. You know everything hair right, Shavell. You know we think about women and hair and really both of you, Porshia and Shavell, and what hair means to us as women.. You know what would you say You know, I know you've always had a lot of volume in your hair and Porshia you too.. So, what's the connection in terms of hair, How do you see it? I feel like for me hair? Initially, you you come into a style, a lot of times defined by what your mother thinks. You should look like. And then you eventually evolve into having the permission to do your own hair, your own way.. You know you think you're grown now, so you get away to school.. For me it was go to college.. You know you have total control over everything. What you look like. And for me, I'm a tall person and so I've always worn big hair. And I've. You know you try different styles., You figure out what works for you, what doesn't work and what looks looks like.. But what I realized is that, eventually you come up with a style that works for you, and then people know you buy that style.. So they like Shavell ..., the tall one with the big hair.. That'S something that even coworkers would say she is the tall one with the big hair.. It could be in a training session or someone they might.. I don't know my name, but they remember the tall with the big hair.. So for me you know hair really does.. I would say polish the look or finish your look for me going through cancer.. It was who am I without what I usually look like now. I have to redefine what I look like and how I feel about that, whatever that is. And so for me, hair does have a strong influence on my perception of me. And so for me losing it really helped me to realize how much you know you take It for granted. All these years, I've taken it for granted. I didn’t think about it. Really. You just have a presence. You have a certain style., You have. You know how you normally look what you like., But now I had to realize. I had to redefine myself, knowing that I don't. You don't look like that right, now., You don't look like that.. So what can you do to get back to yourself or redefine it in a way that you feel good, You know so for me. I do think that I think hair influence, my character.. It influences my my attitude and what I feel and how and how I feel., And it also has a strong influence on my social, how much social skill, how much social interaction I'm going to have.. And so, if you don't like what you're looking like, you don't really want to be anywhere. You want to be home., And so it's important to connect in community with friends or family., So being able to come up with something that works, for you is a big deal.. But what about your Porshia? For me, I would say: I've always had kind of big hair like you.. I'Ve always been known for that, like in workplaces and stuff people. Oh you have such big hair.. It'S big hair Porshia with the big hair., So I've always had big hair.. I'Ve always always been kind of part of my identity.. What I'll say is is that when I started to lose my hair for the first time when I had my son was the first time I kind of had a feeling like. Oh, this is really like bringing me down and making me feel some type of way., Or you know I just felt inadequate in a way. And I and I remember being like What am I going to do, And I don't want him to see me like this And kind of having all these insecurities and things like that that I didn't really expect nor have I ever experienced., So I can only imagine like losing all my hair., But I will say that for me I really can appreciate and I really can.. I really think, like you, said kind of gives you a vibe.. It gives you confidence. And I feel like I've always always really enjoyed having a lot of hair and big hair, especially for a black woman.. Our hair ... is it's like you know, it’s the thing: how much do you have? How long is it like What’s it looking like, So I feel like it's always been part of your identity, my identity. And I I love it and I'm happy that we have more.. We have more versatile ways of expressing ourselves with our hair now. I’m trying to say.. Well, thank you again for being on. Let'S Talk ... Everything Hair., And I really appreciate your transparency. And I thank you as well for joining. Until next time. Love your hair. Live your life.
