Turn A Wig Into A Custom Top Piece

THIS VIDEO IS PROVIDED FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.

Top Pieces are perfect for adding instant fullness and volume, covering undesirable roots, for larger head sizes and much more; however, they aren't available in every style or color. For that reason, we want to show you how to turn a full wig into your very own custom Top Piece. It's very simple and the result is amazing!! We will show you exactly what to cut, how to sew the metal clips in, and everything else you need to know.. Watch and see :)

Hi, I'm Danielle with Godiva secret wigs now one of our most popular pieces are our top pieces, I'm wearing a long top, but you can't tell - and we have the long top in the medium top, but they don't come in every color and they don't come in That many styles so one way to have a top piece if we don't make the style or color that you want is to create your own top piece out of a wig. All you have to do is purchase the wig in the style and color that you want, and then you can turn into a top piece all by yourself. I'M going to show you out. So this is a trick see in terracotta each beautiful red, and so maybe my hairs, this color and we don't make top pieces in this color. So what you would do is buy the wig and then follow these instructions. The first thing you want to do is decide how much of the wig you want to cut off. You could cut just the bottom. You could cut the middle. You could cut all the way to the top you're going to get a different look. So I'm going to show you those three different ways and show you what the outcome is, so I'm going to take my wig and put it on this little block head. If you have a styrofoam head that works too and if not, Annie works just as well. So I have it here inside out: here's the back where the tag is, and so first thing I'm going to do is just cut it really low. This works great. If you have a lot of your own hair - and you just want - you want some extra or if your heads a little larger and you find that the wigs are a little tight on you, I'm cutting right now, I'm just cutting through the elastic and I'm cutting Through this elastic right here, so here we're open and then see how it's attached right here when I cut it right there and you're just kind of keep pulling and seeing where it's attached it's attached here, I'm cutting right in the middle between these two F's here And again, here you're going to follow it all the way around z, if you're pulling you can see where it's attached here, it's attached, I'm going to cover right there right here and then it's kind of double the top and the bottom you're just going to cut Straight through there - and you want to be careful when you're cutting that you're not cutting this bottom hair you're just cutting the elastic at the top. So I'm going to take this off to show you what we did so here you see it's still this nice long piece and on here I'll show you what it looks like. So you still have most of your whole wig look, but what's great is because it's open at the bottom. It'S not going to be as tight on you so for this one. What you would do is sew clips to at the top, and then you could just do two or three at the bottom, depending how much you want, maybe so one here in the middle and on the side. It'S really up to you and at the end of this video we'll be showing you how to sew the clips in. So that's just if your heads a little larger or you really want to use a lot of the wig with your own hair, now say you want to make it more of a top piece now. What we're going to do is I'll go kinda in the middle, so I'm going to do the same thing cut off this elastic, I'm gon na go! Let'S go here. Cutting right here same thing again find where it's connected and cut in the middle here and always you're going just cutting the elastic, not the hair. If you cut a tiny bit of hair, it's not the worst thing ever, try not to and here so I'm just cutting all the way around being careful to only cut the elastic and not the hair attached to it don't be afraid and again I'm going to Cut this elastic off and I'm gon na cover it. So now we have more of a top piece, so here you can see, there's no bottom to this wig, there's no nape, so you're only going to have this hair on the top. So if you have a cute short cut, but you're a little thinner on top, this is perfect and you have tons of layers, and you still have these long sides and again I'll show you on here what it was looking like. So here you just have this little bit of bottom hair and it is helpful if you have like a tee, pin or something you can put in the wig to keep it from moving. I have a needle I'm going to use that. So if you want to make a top piece more similar to how our top pieces are, our top keys only have the crown. So I'm going to cut everything away, except just the crown. So I'm going to start over here and I'm going to cut and usually you will cut a little bit of hair, that's okay, but try and get the least amount possible you're going to cut so you're just cutting everything away and leaving this thick crown part. So again, you're going to pull see where it's attached little bit and over here pull so we're going to do this all the way around and just keep pulling and where the elastic is attached to the wig. That'S what you're going to cut and if you make a mistake, can sew it back together, don't worry or send it to us and we'll sew it back to you here we go so this is just the perfect way to have the custom-made top piece. You always wanted in your color your style, whether you want wavy straight full thin, so I'm cutting all the way to the end. So here we have here we have just the top. So this, if you look on the inside, adjust the base. That'S all it is just that crown area, here's the front and then here's the back now. So you don't have all that long hair. You know the medium. You want the long. You just have this cute little top, but if you love how your hair is - and you just want that added fullness on the top here's the front - this is your perfect piece that cute. So this is a great way to do your top piece and again you'll. How you, how see, how you have like a little on the sides now, but nowhere near is much so. This is just perfect, for you want a little and, like I showed you, if you want a little more a little less, you want more, a little less. So that's our top piece and I am actually wearing our long top in expresso, because my hair is thin on them flat on the top too so see here it's just that crown piece, but it adds so much so if you hold on just one second, I'm Going to show you how to actually sew clips the clips into the piece so where you normally sew them. If here's the front of your piece you're going to sew the clips at the top here and here just like I'm about to show you in a minute and then you would also sew them at the bottom here and here so basically, you can put the clips Anywhere that you want around the piece, and now I'm going to show you exactly how to sew the metal wig clips into the piece you just made. Hi, I'm Danielle with godiva secret wigs and I'm going to show you how to sew a metal wig clip one of these into your wig or top piece or the top piece you just made. So here's your wig you're just going to fold it inside out. Here'S the inside of your wig first thing you want to do, is decide where you're going to put the clips. So if you feel like, I need more added security in the front you're going to put it either on the sides or just one in the middle. If it's riding up in the back, you could put one in the middle or again on the sides and if you feel like you're, always pulling it down from the temples, you could put the clips right on the temples. So normally you want to use a wig clip and thread that matches your wig. So I would do you know a brown clip and brown thread, but so you can see it easier. I'M going to use a blonde clip, and blonde put so the first thing you're going to do is take your thread and you're going to use like two feet: ish this much and you're just going to cut it off next thing you want to do is take Your needle and you're going to put the thread through the eye of the needle, which is that opening up here put it right through and pull it and you're just going to pull both sides. So you end up with the needle in the middle and to even sides you're going to take the top and just make a little knot come on little up. Oh, you do yours too. Okay. Now that might not have my thread at the end. Now I'm ready so I'm going to take my clip. You want to make sure the clip is put correctly so to know that you want your teeth to face into the center of the wig. So, no matter where you put your clip, you want the teeth to face in the middle, so going this way wrong teeth in the middle. So, no matter where you put it - and the next thing you want to make sure - is that this rubber part is what's facing down and is against the wig. So now we have a rubber down teeth facing inward and we're ready. So I'm going to take the needle and I'm putting it and I'm going through a little bit of the wig and an up through this top hole, pull it all the way through and because we made that knot that the thread won't come out all the way. I'M going to go a second time in through that exact, same hole and now see how you have this circle of thread right here. I'M going to take the needle and put it down through the circle of the thread. Come right up, I'm actually making a knot with the thread. I'M going to do the same thing now on this hole. Just ignore the gold one! This hole right here, I'm going to go down, grab a little bit of the wig and up through the hole, hole same thing a second time and again, here's my circle of thread going down into the middle of it and up to make my knot again now I need to get to the other side and you're going to notice these three holes up here. You can totally ignore those. We don't need them, so I'm going to take my needle and just put it through this part. It doesn't matter if you grab a little wig or not doesn't matter, so I'm just going to pull it through here and then, when I flip this over you'll see I'm on the other side. Now I'm going to flip my wig around because I'm right-handed and it's easier and now I'm going to do the same thing I did over there I'm going to do on these three holes here. So again, I take a little bit of the wig up through this hole and the same thing a second time and the second time I'm going to make my knot and what this knot does is means that say the thread happens to break one day or break Right now, while I'm sewing, I don't have to go back and do the whole thing. The whole thing will not unravel only it will only unravel to the next hole, because that's where you made your knot, so it's kind of some added security. So again, second time: where are you and then again through the hole so every time I'm reinforcing it and the last time and you don't need to grab very much weight, you're just grabbing all you don't need to get way down in there here and a second Time and again in my whole hair in there pull now, what you're going to do is take your scissor and just cut off towards the needle and we're going to make a knot kind of like you would, if you were making it on your shoelaces you're, going To just take your two sides of your thread: cross them over each other and through once and twice this just kind of finishes it off as like an added security and now you're all done sewing in your clip. It'S really secure! Here'S how you open it see how it's open in there and close it, and this rubber on the inside means that even if you only have a little bit of hair, it's not going to slide around it's not going to pull your hair. It'S going to stay! Really secure so now you know it actually saw the clip in yourself now, if you don't want to do it yourself, we will do it for you. So all you have to do is go on our website and type in the word, so scew into our search box and you'll see a bunch of different options come up about where you want your clip. So that way, if you purchase your wig from us at the same time, you can purchase the sewing and we'll sew those clips in for you. However, I know you can do it yourself, even if you've never sewn before. It'S really easy, you know, feel free to hit the pause button as many times. You need to go back check it out. I know you can do it and the great thing is once you know how to do this. You could sew buttons, you could to a hole in your shirt. You can sew anything, it's really a basic sewing technique. So now you know how to sew and you can make your wigs extra secure by

Silvanafromchester: Thank you for this really clear tutorial. I have several wigs that I haven't worn for a while as I find them a bit hot on my head. This is wonderful and I am excited to do this. I'm familiar with the clips as I've made my own clip in extensions. They are very easy to sew in . If excited to give my wigs a new lease on life again. Wondering if you've made any videos on trimming /shaping wigs at all ? I would love to see some. You are great and I will look at your website too. Cheers.

GHAOSWB KAJLIAG: THANK U SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I've been looking for a way to create a topper for my sister who has alopicia. I can't wait to do this fun topper together with her. Bless ur heart.

When I tried the wig on, it wasn't what I was looking for, in fact it was shorter than my hair! So I wanted to change it into a topper. Your instructions gave me hope! Thank you again!

L H: Great idea!! Good tutorial. What did you do with the left over pieces that you cut? Could you turn each one into a hair extension with the wig cut you suggested?

NurseMommyLuvs2: I tried this and my topper came out perfect!!!!!!! Thanks for this video!

Wanda Theodorou: Thank you for your detailed instructions! You’re very brave and giving. God bless you

Sandra: This is genius! Full wigs are too tight on me so I'll be trying this out. Thanks!

Ziggy3339: So happy you made such a great video! I only purchased a wig once & found out afterwards that my head is too big for it. I purchased & sewed these holders but it wasn't comfortable so it's been in a drawer & stayed there. I had no idea I could cut the thing thereby making it bigger as a topper and cut to suit my whims. I'm baaaack - to getting more wigs! Generous teacher you are. Oh, and your rings are awesome!

Susan Patterson: Thanks so much for the sewing tip, as well as turning a wig into a topper!

Michele Barnier: Thank you so much I bought a wig that’s to big and felt like such a waste, I saw a few clips on toppers and now I can turn my wig to a topper again thank you soooo much for sharing. God Bless!!!

Kim Cowan: I just used this technique with a less expensive wig I'd bought. I wanted to make it into hairpiece. I cut it down, attached a claw clip and it worked great. I clip it in the top of my head and pinned the bunched up excess hair around it. It worked so well, thanks for this tutorial. I was a hairstylist for 33 years, so it was fairly easy, but I think anyone could do this...

G K: Thank you so much!!! You helped me a lot ☺️And definitely subscribed.

Jill Lynn Beauty Therapy: You are such a great teacher. Love watching your tutorials. ;)

TA L.: That is great! It is nice to learn about new techniques to give my clients economical options! Great video. XO

Anita Rushlow: You just saved my holidays this year! I bought my first ever wig for quite a bit of money. I researched it for hours before I bought it. I was so excited to receive it! Then, my bubble was burst! It was not at all what I had seen on any wig review video!!! It was small and the hair density was super low. UGH I was all set to return it and then I watched your video! I made a 3/4 wig/topper and I think I can make this work for me! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!

meg racks: I followed your instructions on how to make a topper out of a wig. THANK YOU! A wig is just too hot, even though the ones I have purchased are considered "cooler" to wear. I have made myself 4 toppers and switch them out! Am so glad I saw this demo on how to make this!!! It's much more comfortable for me.

PhelinePhrenzy: I had to pause halfway through clip demo portion, to tell you I LOVE YOU!! I have so many nice wigs that are squashed in a plastic bag to use for cosplay bc I got disgusted at how thick and heavy they are on my small head!! After finishing the video, and liking it, of course, I'm running upstairs to play with my wigs! And make something beautiful and functional for me to wear!! Thank youuuuuuu! ❤️

Handa Yani: This is just what I need. A topper adding volume to my crown without teasing. Great tutorial. Thank you so much

Angie: U r so adorable, I loved this video thank you so much sweet Danielle. Can't wait to order from u guys!!! I love ur mom too, u guys are so great & have taught me so much. I've started wearing wigs due to major hormone problems causing hair loss & changing my hair, but didn't have anyone to help me, but now I dothank u both so much for these amazing videos. You are both such beautiful sweethearts.

Sue Rush: I think this is very inspiring especially for young ladies and older ladies.

Ms. F. Lee Banks: I just finished watching your video. I felt like I had struck Gold! I can't find a grey kinky twist topper. I have wigs that are no longer stylish. I can make toppers out of them. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

Texas Outlook: Y'all have some of the best teaching videos around! Thanks ~Sidney

Lisa Kendall Consulting LLC: No one else takes the time to really help us the way you and your Mom do. The tips about making a topper and sewing in the clips are priceless! I have thinning curly hair that is naturally graying, (scarring alopecia and a very sensitive scalp) and now I feel inspired to make my own topper from some of the wigs I've purchased but don't wear. Thank you so much!

Linda Ossmann: I have a couple of wigs I'm not wearing and always wanted a topper piece. Now I'm gong to try this technique to make good use out of them! Thank You!

buddy77587: Absolutely great instruction! I learned a lot

Sheree Caves: Awesome !! I love your wigs and toppers !!! You look beautiful also!! Your right, I couldn't tell you are wearing one! Very natural and pretty !! Thank you for sharing !!! Sincerely Sheree Caves.

Lipurl73: Thank you for showing me how to turn a wig into a topper. I am learning all I can because I’ll be doing that really soon.

Marina Fleetwood: Oh Yay! I had bought an inexpensive wig several years ago. Loved the style but it was too big and toooo hot here in AZ. So I just stuck with toppers. Following your instructions, I turned it into a topper keeping the original style. THANKS for the HOW TO video. Now I can change my style a little. I've been wearing the New Addition topper from Rene of Paris since that crown piece is larger than most toppers. I now need a tad bit more coverage so I know there is help for me now by buying inexpensive wigs and turning them into toppers.

Happening In Florida: Genius can always be found in simplicity.... Fantastic option! :)

Ilo Haylo: Thank you so much for this tip I have a few wigs that I would like to have less hair with so the topper is a wonderful suggestion

mra29: You are AWESOME at explaining!!

TheYogina: Very innovative thank you sooooo much for posting this.

VM Miller: Thanks! Could the other pieces be made into clipin extensions? Also, most of the pieces whether full wigs or toppers I find are not for gray hair. Could you suggest a source? And, the fullness on the sides is often to much is there a way of layering?

Ms Estrada: Danielle, you are awesome sister. Kudos to you. I have so many wigs and I can no longer stand wearing wigs. But after watching your video now I will make them all toppers some medium and most short toppers. The bottom of my hair I choose to keep cut close tapered And I keep about 1 in of my own hair on the top to attach my clip on bangs and topper. Thank you sooo much, sister. You the Bomb diggity Gurl....Much Love

tuza crowd: Good video.... this will really help ppl do the simple task of sewing on top of adjusting a wig into a topper without ruining the wig

G C: This is SO WONDERFUL!   I have worn a 3/4 cap hair piece style I found 4 years ago, but find I am beginning to need something else.  I get a lot of compliments on my hairpiece and no one can believe it isn't my own, but now my hair is getting thinner in the back, so I need some hair to come further down the back.  In looking at other toppers, I can't find another 3/4 cap I like - although there are so MANY cute full wigs.  Now I can shop for a full wig with the style I like, and start cutting!!!!!  YEA!!!!  I'll be right over to Godivas to look around.  :)

miss kitty: What color clips should I use for a light grey wig? Thank you for the Dems, very helpful!

Kimlyn Jackson: Love it!! And I really like those clips too...no bonding glue!!

PENNY CLARK: You and your mom are amazing! You truly have thought of everything!

Julie Mann: Hi Danielle--thanks so much--I'm going to try this--is there a certain type needle you used? Upholstery or just regular needle. Excellent video. Julie

Lady Blackhorse: Love your solution to adding hair to the top (where I need to fill in where I'm thinning). BUT I've always been told that CLIPS CAUSE bald spots and additional hair loss. Can someone please address my concern. I certainly don't need any further hair loss.

Brenda J: Perfect! I'm just beginning to grow out my grey so no sense buying one now. But I do need one.

Kado: EXCELLENT tutorial, thank you

Anita DaSilva: Found this very helpful and appreciate you sharing it.

Brenda Downing: I want to thank you very much for this video. I will do this. you have helped me a lot.

Rara Avis: And there I was thinking, I‘m the only one, who comes up with stuff like that The second length is a great option for summer. Still gives you the look of a wig, but why more comfortable, because your neck is free. And ‚undercuts‘ are in right now, so it’s not even a problem, if someone notices.

BL G: Best video instruction I have seen. Clear and easy to understand.

Peggy Hurley: Great demo & GREAT class!!!!

MsBestsunshine Sunny: Awesomely video! Thank you for sharing and you tips!

Marina Yagudayeva: Great video, thank you. Also can you make a video how to cut the synthetic wig lengths to look natural.

Lily Clement-Brown: Danielle, you are a life-saver. After trying lots of wiglets and toppers which weren't 100% satisfactory, now you showed me a better method. Thanks!

ShoryoTombo: Absolutely brilliant! Why am I just now seeing this is beyond me!

prim uzor: Brilliant! Just ordered a topper, now I can cancel. Thank you!

Debbie Hall: I love this video, do I need to somehow reenforce the edge where I cut off the weft? How does it hold up?

Mommy 42: Thaaaaaank you!. I want a short pixie cut but my hair is shoulder length and my husband would loose it if i cut it short. I hate the way the back of my wigs itch. So im gonna pin my hair up and put on a top piece. Thaaaaaank you.

LOURDES DEL ROSARIO SUÁREZ: De los mejores tutoriales que he visto , enhorabuena y muchas gracias

The Merz: Wow, this was a little shocking. Nice job. Gets me thinking differently about some of my wigs that aren't quite working for me.

Susan James: You are adorable. Thank you for sharing these tips!

Dawn Atsea: Question : can a piece or hole be cut out on top center so that my bio hair can be pulled through & thus make the topper or wig more natural looking? Also my hair is not smooth & straight/silky like your toppers, so how can I get one to blend in & look more natural? Thanks

Linda Smith: So useful to know. Thankyou.

UGPVlogs_LA: Would this work for a tiny head? My head is so small for the wig I already have. Thank you for your video

Annette Burchett-Taylor: Need to begin wearing wigs. What is this wig you're showing? Love it! Brand, name, price and where to purchase? Thanks!

Rae Lugo: Thank you!!! What is the color of the piece you are working with?

Theresa w: Thanks I'm going to try it!

I4Adam2: Thank you so much I have learned a lot

Grace Amazing: Great site ..... thanks, i won't panic about my hair, or the diminishing of it, anymore =D

Stephanie Bailey: Great video. Thank you

Joyce England: AWESOME, I can do this!!!!!!

Lisa Brown: Question: Can this technique be used to create a 3/4 wig? In other words, can the front of a wig be removed, leaving the rest of the wig so one, in the end, will have a wig that is positioned further back on the head more and is more like fall-type wig? I was thinking of removing the front of a wig so I can camouflage the front rim behind my front hairline to make the wig natural looking in the front. I can't wear lace front, and many standard cap wigs because of my low hairline.

Dennie Spencer: Nice, thank you!!

Norma Spande: That was so very helpful

Robbie Diles: Thank you Miss for the great tips

Serenity: Danielle, your videos are tops!

tall treesinc: I would have loved to see them put the finished top (the smallest topper) on someone. Because it doesn't look like it would be easy to "blend" in with hair on the head. There doesn't seem to be anyone on YouTube who does this wig alteration and then show how it might work on an actual person. Bummer.

Linda Fusco: COOL IDEA THANK YOU!

TOP IT OFF MRS. R: You did a great job.

Slay By Pamela J: Hello can you tell me if you use regular sewing thread? Thank you.

Bunny Toes: Thank you for this!

Indrani Darren: Wow! Good idea!thanks

Barbie Lockett: Thank You for sharing this information Sweetheart.

Juliet0861: How long of a wig do you have to purchase for long top piece?

Maria Falz: wow, Im completely amaze:) where can we buy the clip?

Louise Mae Brouder: Thanks . . . Where can I get the clips please ? ❤️❤️❤️

RM- Nelson: Your a great Teacher Thank you for sharing. Even though I saw when you took yours off it confused me.

MARYBOO Vee: Lovely idea thanx!

S Hyde: what brand is that wig? would be good to know. thanks.

Heidi McNaughtan: Could you glue it to the head instead of clips? I have serious issues and no hairline, baldness and a tiny bit on top.
