Hello: everyone, my name is Waqqas Sheik.. My name is ( laughs, ), Marquetta., (, laughter ), That was so bad. ( upbeat, music, ), ♪, Breslin, Breslin, ♪, ♪, Author and speaker, ♪ ♪ Master stylist. Using every gift. I got to teach ya ♪ ♪, Just wan na reach ya, ♪ ♪ We're like changing motivation. This is key ♪ ♪! You can live well with it, but noted greater received ♪ ♪. It'S my quest to be. ♪ ♪, Breslin, Breslin., ♪, (, laughter, ), I'm Marquetta Breslin, and this is I'm Waqqas Sheik, (, laughs, ) And today we're going to talk to you about choosing the right wig making class.. This video is actually something that's very important and needed in our industry, because there's so many different types of classes and so many people offering classes now - and I don't know about you - but I've heard some horror, stories. Horrendous, horrendous, stories., Really So yeah, so we're gon Na talk about it and we're gon na break down the types of classes and then we're gon na tell you what to look for in choosing an instructor and choosing a class. So, let's just get right into it.: Let's go for it. All right, so the first type of class that I want to break down are the look and learn classes.. Do you guys have look and learn classes over in? We do The UK All right. So basically, what a look and learn class is: is you pay your admission into the class and you sit and you look and learn.? There is no hands on you're just watching the hair stylist perform whatever it is that you've paid to see. There's benefit in that.. If you are a visual learner, you can watch and you can learn, but the downside to that is sometimes you miss things if you're sitting in the back of the room or if you can't ask questions some people will do a Q & A but not really. What is your take on the look and learn class Erm? I think if it's like a short one hour, two hour, information gathering fantastic. If it's a seven hour, look and learn and you're sitting there and all you're doing is writing and there's about a hundred people. There, with one person on stage you lose that interpersonal relationship and it's very much you might as well just watch it on YouTube., Yeah, (, laughs. ). Do you know what I mean? I mean yeah. I know what you mean. Yeah, it's I personally don't like look and learn. I don't learn like that. Yeah, also with look and learn classes, there's typically way more people Yeah.. So if you get there late and you're sitting way in the back of the class and there's not a camera, that's showing you on a screen what's happening. Then it's very very difficult to retain the knowledge, because once you go to a look and learn class and then you go back home, you got ta like put that stuff to use immediately so that it can stick.. And if you don't and you're just taking notes. You may forget something, so those are the positives and the negatives of the look and learn class or look and learn classes, not necessarily my favorite type. But another example of a look and learn class like if you have someone for what we do. I don't think it would be really beneficial to do a total look and learn class for like ventilating or cap construction, or It's very much no.. I like people to ask questions. Yeah., I like to direct questions while I'm teaching. Mmm hmm., And if it's 100 to 200 people, you are limited in what Yeah. What you can do and especially if it's all practical. Yeah., If it's all practical and then you have The type of look and learn classes where you'll learn a plucking technique or an attachment method, or something like that., Mmm hmm.. So that's look and learn., Then the next type of class, the ones that we are probably the most excited about - are hands on classes.. Because what we do and what we teach is a lot of hands on so you've actually been a teacher at the collegiate level for a very long time. So I want you to talk a little bit about the benefits of that hands on training.. So I've been educating 13 years at a university, a college and then privately. So with me, and I think sometimes it's how I learn and I try to adapt for my students. When it comes to hands on and breaking it down. I like to look at their work so as they're working I'll stand over their shoulder I'll have a look at their technique if it's better than mine I'll think, oh, my god, I can learn from that. ( laughter )! Yes, You know because everyone's got different skills. And then I can jump in if they are struggling or I can show them the demonstration again on a one to one basis or one and five. Or if they're left handed I'll. Try and ventilate with my left hand. So they can see, what's it like and I think breaking it down and being hands on with the industry that we're in it's beneficial., It's 150 % necessary and for me I've been teaching hands on not at the collegiate level, but around about the same amount of Time as you've been actually, I think I started a few years before so. What I've found with hands on is that people learn in multiple different ways. So with my classes, I'll have I'll show a video first of the technique, so the visual learners can see it and then I'll do a hands on demonstration. So they can watch me, do it live and then, when go back to their seats to do it, they've seen it they've watched it live and then it makes more sense when they sit down and try to do it. And that's the most important thing when it Comes to hands on, but here's the thing that people don't wan na talk about with hands on ,'cause. Everybody wants to do classes, but not everybody has the patience you have to have the patience of Job.. You know who Job is in the Bible, Yeah. (, laughter, ), And he had to have ( laughs, ) some patience., But you have to have patience.. You do have to have patience.. It'S not a quick thing that you can do and move on.. It'S a process and you need patience. Yeah.. You currently teach hands on classes. Talk about your classes.. What are you teaching? So I teach a range of three. So I'll do like a beginners to wig making. We call it knotting by the way. And it's like a one day class and I'll go through with them how to ventilate or knot the techniques, the density, the lace type, how to make mistakes, how to fix those mistakes, and I give them a little training manual With the kit included - and that's just one day. And it's a bit of a taster to see if this is something that they want to do, because I want to be a wig maker and everyone wants to be a wig maker. But until you sit down, Listen, (, laughs, ) And you think I need patience, ( laughter, ). I need to slow it down. Yes, They think. No, this isn't for me. Yeah and that's it's great.. It is good, it is good.. The second one that I do is you call it: cap, construction, Well, foundation, cap construction, So wig foundation and wig construction, and I think personally, it's important to learn that as well as ventilating ,'cause. You will understand the anatomy of a wig., So I do a four day course and I teach them how to create a wig foundation so from head wrapping, doing the mold, padding the block and then I'll sit with them and I'll make a foundation and they'll make A foundation at the same time. And I try and cover three within four days so we'll do a center parting side parting and then off the face.. And then, if students want to bring in their closures or frontals. How would you add a closure and frontal Uh huh there you go. Yeah., And you have a class coming up. I have a class coming up in New York on April, the 6th, That's so awesome. Yeah April, the 6th to April the six seven eight nine ten., ( laughter, ) And April the 10th.. So it's five days and I'm gon na go through how to ventilate. So it's an introduction to ventilating or wig, making I'll go through hair types, density, lace, et cetera, and then we're gon na go through and create a foundation.. What I love about the reason why I just asked you to explain all of that is because, with all these people, who just wan na do pop up classes and they just wan na, do classes, they don't really understand the intricacies of putting together a course.. You can't just teach something you can't just throw it out there and teach it, because you have to have a method to the madness. You have to take people down step by step and not just blah blah blah blah teach something you can't like fire off at. Like a water hose all this information to people because they have to be able to consume it in the correct, order. Exactly. And not everybody knows how to do that.. They don't. It's a small class that I'm teaching. So it's only maximum of 10 people. And I've got an assistant coming with me, one of my friends so where we can both go round. It'Ll, probably take five people each and then swap over, because I wan na see everyone's progress, and I think something like this. For over five days, if it was a hundred people - and I was on my own - I couldn't see their progress. Where this is completely different, Yes., Whereas ( laughs, ). What you offer is slightly different and I think I don't feel threatened. You don't feel threatened. Oh, no, It's different courses that suit different people Right., But what you're doing is different to me and I that's fantastic what you do with your live events.. Thank you! So when's, your next live event: (, laughs, ). My next live event is April 19th. Through to 21st - and it is for all of my students who enrolled in the lace wig training system, I allow them to come back to Vegas, for it's basically a free event, but I have them pay a $ 49 registration fee. That'S good. To secure their seat'cause. Everybody will say that they're coming, but everybody won't show if they don't have a little bit of skin the game.. So I have them pay that $ 49 registration fee, because then I know you're serious and you're gon na show up., But I have a different. I have a little bit of a different structure. Yeah., So at that particular event there can be up to 150 people in the room doing hands on and, like you said, I can't do it all by myself., (, laughs ). So I have multiple assistants, but - and I still to this day - don't know how I do it, but I still get around to each and every individual. [ Waaqas Sheik ], That's amazing.! I end up doing it anyway, making sure that everybody I get to see everybody's work, and I can course correct as they're, because sometimes in doing this, for as long as we've been doing it, you can look at something somebody's doing and say no move your hands Slightly to the left and adjust this and boom it'll click Mm, hmm they've got it And oh, my gosh it'll be amazing.. Now that's just one type of event that I do. I also do a five day, long event where it's all hands on and we go through like the whole wig making process. They walk out with a patterned wig block, a fully foundation, that's made and some of them even start ventilating, the foundation before they leave. Wow., And then I also have a two day event where I touch on multiple different things in the wig making field. So we'll do some ventilating, we'll talk about seaming and different types of seams, and it's just like you said it's one of those things where you get to feel it out and see if it's something you really really like to do yet it's still a ton of Information in that event., It's very detailed Yep.. If I'm paying money for a course. I want to get as much out of it. Exactly., I'm investing in my future Yeah. And I think the courses where it's kind of hands on gives you the opportunity. Yes. And same with mine. There is a lot to cover in five days. However, if you kind of go a little bit quicker than that, then I've got the next step ready for you and then I've got the next step for you Exactly And then, if you're gon na go home and study tonight, I know what you will do and This is what you will do, and this is what you're gon na do.. So it's I like to pay it forward with my skills, Absolutely. And I think you're exactly the same.. Yes, I do. Share. And it's one of those things too, where you also being an educator and knowing what you're doing when it comes to dealing with people and learning abilities. Not only do you have to have patience, but I can take for my smaller hands on event. I don't take any more than 30 people.. I can handle 30 people with one or two assistants Nia. My daughter has been doing this since she was seven, so she can make a she's amazing. And then I have one other assistant that I can handle and we can handle all the people in the room, usually for that two day event. But what happens when you have 30 people in a room and half of the people are super fast, but the other half are super slow. You have to know how to handle that. Yep. And you have to either be ready to say. Okay, now that you're done with this move on to this, but for these people who are moving a little bit slower, you have to know how to ebb and flow with the class and not everybody can't fit in a box when it comes to hands on Not At all., Do you agree 100 % Yeah. Yeah, 100 %, so you have to understand how people learn what what the best method is for them. And then you have to have back up methods like sometimes I'll have people who just cannot get it. And then you say: okay, I have a teaching aid and I don't know about you. But for me my teaching aid is this huge. Is these it's not lace, but it has these huge holes that are still hexagons and I'll get a crotchet needle because ( laughter ) it has a barb Yep. And then a piece of thick thread and I can demonstrate the technique and have a teaching aid.. I do something similar. You do see, But you have to understand those things when, as you're a teacher, you don't want to learn from someone who's just in it for the monetary gain, because then it's gon na show and you won't learn anything and those are some Of the horror stories that I've learnt. They're, probably sitting on the side on their phone Yep. Barking, the orders Yep., Which I don't like. No. No.. It'S not good. And you just need to make sure that in looking for an instructor, I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself. So I won't go there just yet we'll talk about looking for the instructor last, but that's hands on okay.. So you wan na make sure that if you are a hands on learner, you go to a hands on class and not a look and learn. So that's gon na require you to ask some questions.. The next type of class is what I call a hybrid. And a hybrid is when you have a look and learn and a hands on class all in one.. I do a version of that. I don't know if you have any classes like that.. I don't really do a hybrid. Okay. Mine are more kind of hands, on. Just hands on.. So I have a little bit of a hybrid method when I teach my big ventilating bootcamp, because they're seeing right, they're, look and learn they're, seeing the look and learn with me, demonstrating in the front of the class when I have them come up, but they're also Going back to their seats to do the hands on and apply what they've just see me do so that's one method.. I don't think a lot of people use that method., Not that I know of., But it's there. And then what's another method, Talking head., We have our cheat sheet up: here. (, laughs, ). So the next method is the talking head method. That came from my head. ( laughter, ). That'S what I call a talking head is when you're just straight giving them the goodies the good stuff., But typically that's not going to be a wig making event. That'S gon na be more of a marketing event Yep. Or something like that. Where you're talking for one day two days, I have a five day talking head event, where I'm doing nothing but yapping and sharing a ton of information for five days. Straight. People are like how the world does she do that, But that goes to the next point that I want to make, which are the things that you need to look for when looking for an instructor to teach.. The reason why I can go for five days is because I have the experience to back it up. I'M not regurgitating information that I read online from somebody and now I'm gon na try to take it and teach it to you.. I have experience to back it. Up., I don't teach, I can teach theory, but I really teach practical, because these are things that I'm doing on a daily basis. And that's a key point: experience. Very key., Experience. Experience. Yes.. It'S if you are looking for a course in wig making wig building experience in the instructor is key.. If they haven't got the experience, how can they troubleshoot and answer your questions? If they don't know the answer, ( laughs, ) That is so true.. It is very, it is very evident, I think, within the first 10 minutes when you get into a course or a class that they don't know their information., Absolutely. Or they're, just regurgitating something that they've just learnt or they've just heard and trying to earn some money By copying it Yup., So I would say: research, your educator research, your teacher look at what experience they've got. And I think social media is amazing for that and just see what work they've done and if you are contacting them, ask them a few questions and if It'S coming out, naturally, amazing you're on the right, path. Yeah, absolutely and the other part to that too, is understanding what you're getting into so Waqqas - and I talked about this on, like probably the first day that he was here in that the way I teach is The way I taught myself is the way I learn., So I have a lot of non-traditional methods of making wigs we get to the same result, but my method is a little bit different.. So, that's why it's really important to ask questions so that you know what you're getting into and you're, not just jumping into something that you thought was this. But it's really not that which is also key for the instructor to be very transparent too, and not. Try to say they can teach something that they don't really know. That'S not good. No.. No, that's not good at all.. The other thing that you wan na look for, and I can we can do a video on this next point. ( laughs ) is professionalism.. [ Clapping ]. Yes, I clap with that. ( laughter ) Because, oh my gosh., They are it's a bit of a sore subject. Yes., I think professionalism. What you've got ta. Think of is you are coming onto a course with a teacher and a student. That'S how your relationship should be, so you are teaching a professional skill.. You have to be professional in the way you compose yourself. The way you deliver your skills., The way you converse with your students and when they leave. Obviously, professionalism is like saying goodbye and thank you on a positive note, because that is the last thing they're gon na remember before they leave., So professionalism is key. 150 % And I'm gon na tell you how what I mean what professionalism is to me.. So I have a military background, everybody pretty much. Everybody knows I spent almost nine and a half years in the United States Air Force and one of the things that the Air Force taught me was discipline and timeliness. Paying attention to detail those types of things.. So with my events, one of the things that I think is critical is timeliness., So at 8:59 I'm standing up with my clicker in hand for my slides and I'm ready to go. So when that clock strikes nine o'clock, I don't care if you're, not in the building, if you're not there, I got ta start because guess what everybody who is there on time is sitting and ready to learn, and I can't be disrespectful to their time by waiting Or starting late or she's, five minutes late. Oh my gosh, because what does that? Do That begins to break that? Trust. Exactly., Because already people may not necessarily know who you are but they're, showing up'cause they're interested in this skill and they wan na. Come to your event, but they don't really know so. You got ta set the tone for that in the beginning, which stands like with your professional. The way you carry yourself and the way you handle your business.. So what do you say about that? I 100 % agree. Yeah.. If your course is starting at 9, 9:30 8:45 is late.. There you go. 8:45 is late. Yes. 8:30 get in my make yourself feel comfortable. Grab a drink pen and paper ready, get your tools out, get your equipment out ready to learn. Bang on for nine o'clock. Yes., What you've got ta think is. Yes, you are on a course. However, it's also a networking event. So there are fellow wig makers there and that's where you kind of start to speak to people pass on your contact details because you're in this journey together and there's gon na be an instance where Oh yeah, You're gon na get work together or one person will Have work and they'll send it to you so timeliness is key., Timeliness is key. And then even the process leading up.. I'Ve had horror stories of people who, like they'll, sit in my class and I don't allow them to ever say a name Okay., Because there's many people in there - and I don't want - I don't - do drama so they'll, raise their hand and they'll share a story and Usually I'll stop them and say well just share that with me privately, because I don't believe in bad mouthing people in any aspect., Even privately.. Even if somebody has done something negative to me. I'Ll speak on the negative thing, but I will still praise them in the end and wish them the best.. You know that Yep., Because I've done that right. And I've done that in classes. So that's the other thing with professionalism too. Do not bad mouth. Other wig makers or other people in the business in front of your audience., No way., That is such bad taste. And it makes you look insecure. It makes you look like you can't even yeah.. It'S have you had that happen. I have. I have stopped them straight. Away. Yes., I don't want to hear it. No.. I don't want that negativity in my course. And if you are unhappy with that situation, I'll listen to you and my advice will be speak to that person directly view your whatever your concerns are and then take it up with them.. This is a different environment. This is about kind of uplifting, each other kind of helping each other progress in this industry.. There are people out there that will do the opposite of what we're trying to explain to you. Guys.. That'S their issue, don't kind of take it in don't return it back to other people., So I'll share with you, one of the I'm gon na choose bits and pieces of the story to share.. So I had an individual come to my class and she said I'm just so thankful that you were so professional in the process. She said because I had a really bad experience.. I paid a young lady for a class and it was a class to learn ventilating or something close to what we teach Okay. And she paid for this class and there was barely any communication leading up to the class.. So on the morning of the class, she shows up to the hotel and it's not in one of the rooms that you would have an event in it's inside of a suite like a yeah, it's inside, of a suite. But there wasn't enough room in the suite. So they had to like she had to ask the attendees to go to another hotel.. This is happening while the class is supposed to be going. Wow. Yes, that's not professional.. You have to be very, very Wow., (, laughs, ). I know I know., But people are they want the information, but for people like you and I, when things like that happen, they begin to question and say well, is this real Am I is she ghetto And they will call they'll call and say I just wanted To make sure you were real and they ask that question up until the day they walk in the door and then it's like. Oh my gosh. This is so yeah.. This is so well put together, (, laughs, ) and it's so professional. But that's what I have many of those stories by the way and it's so unfortunate that that happens, but it is have you had any stories like that No. (, laughs ). As you know, I don't shut up., ( laughter, ), That's taking it to another level. Yes. I've heard of stories of people that have booked on to classes. It'S been canceled or Oh yeah. There'S been no communication or they've example of someone's gone to a class. Their skills are slightly advanced than other people, but obviously it's a generic course.. I think it should have been up to the instructor to kind of identify what the needs of that student was and what experience they've got beforehand, so they can kind of move their journey on slightly different to someone else's learning, but that wasn't the case. It was. You need to calm, down. And kind of that puts the student on the back foot. These are the stories that I've heard and I always aim to be not that person.. So the courses that I teach I teach from my home, so people are coming into my space. Yeah, but you have a dedicated space for that., Which I do. I have a studio at home. Yeah., So you are coming into my home. I wan na make sure that I am professional ,'cause. You know where I live. ( laughter ). You know where I live. That's a great point., So it's it's hard for me, but when a student books in I want to make sure that they are who they are. So I just make sure that I am communicating with them saying thank you for booking in this. Is the next process I'll be in contact with you this and then any questions? Please feel free to email me and a lot of the time it's on social media and from the conversation I can gather, that is the type of person that they are but anyone's, welcome and then usually so far touch wood. Do you have that saying here, Touch wood knock on wood was what we say.. Well, we say just touch wood, but everyone touches their head.. I don't know. ( laughs ) Anyway. I'Ve had The British, The British., I don't understand.. I'Ve had amazing students and they've respected. My house and I've respected them., And they have said this is so professional considering it is your home. Yeah., But you you value, professionalism. Exactly. And you understand the value in that., But just be very, very mindful ask a lot of questions. I can't tell you how many times Jessica and Aretha have received phone calls and they'll say. Oh, I talk to her all the time. She has a lot of questions and it's very very normal, because people wan na make sure that number one I am who I say I am number two. I can do what I say. I can do and number three that they're not gon na get their money taken. Away., Here's the other thing with professionalism, too, is: if a student pays for a class and you have to cancel the class or they can't come, you must have a policy in place to protect you and to protect the student and you've got to follow your policies. Yep., That is very, very critical., And I only mention that, because we've had that happen several times, sometimes you can't help if somebody gets sick or if you lose a family member, so there needs to be policies and stuff in place for that. So these are part of the questions that you need to be asking when you're looking for an instructor. Now the next thing is their work.. They might be an amazing instructor, but what about their work? Have you seen their work? Do they have a portfolio? Everyone should have a portfolio. Yes.. My portfolio is online., (, laughs, ). I know a lot of people that are in the industry and they are amazing at what they do. But social media isn't their thing. Yeah.. But if you do contact them, they are they. You can IMDB them. You can see their work on TV. You can see their work on clients., So there will be something where you can see their work. Yeah. Always. Someway Always 100 % Yeah someway shape form or fashion., And my portfolio's online. It'S on social media. I write down what shows I've created wigs for if I've got students I'll post, that at the same time. Exactly. And I'm always posting my work. Yeah and that's critical and key to if you're. If you are the instructor and you are teaching the class, it's important for people to see what your students have created. - That's important, that's social proof to say: hey, I taught this person and this is what they did. Now. One of the things I do is I'm very particular about making sure that if I say this is one of my students, I know that they primarily learn the technique from me, even though they may have gone to other people. I'M very weird about that, because I never want to deceive anybody or say hey. This is one of my students. When I know good and well, I didn't teach them a doggone thing.. That'S an American thing.! That'S a country actually. Doggone thing., A doggone, thing., Okay., (, laughter ), But no that's really really important.. It is really important.. I post of me actually working. So you see my hands and sometimes you see my face, and you know that is me actually doing. The job. And it's surprising where I've had people say I've done this and then you look at it and think. No that isn't your work or you haven't made that or there's something not right. So. Are you for real Yeah. I like to see people working, so I'm gon na go and do a course That is crazy, (, laughs ) I wan na see them working or their work before I would go and pay my money ,'cause, I'm investing in my Future. Yep. And that's key., That's key! That'S critical.! That is key.! That'S very important.! You do not want to be deceived., But you also don't want to be deceiving people.. So these are a lot of the things that you need to be looking for when it comes to looking for a wig making class there's many different types of wig making classes. Do you wan na just learn, plucking and using the traditional sewing machine? Do you wan na go deeper and learn traditional wig, making from where you're building the foundation from scratch? Ventilating? What exactly is it? Do you want to learn? That'S where you need to start. Yeah.. First, you need to figure out what you wan na learn. How deep do you wan na go, then you need to figure out if you wan na, do a look and learn class or if you wan na, do hands on or hybrid or whatever that is and then you can narrow down from there.. Many sure you do your research. Not only on the class but on some of the students as well, because the students will be very truthful. Very truthful. Yes and they will share the bad experiences. And that relates back to professionalism. Exactly.. Because if remember bad press travels quicker than good press., Yes, it does.. Yes, it does. Uh, huh., Uh, huh., (, laughter ). If someone has had a bad experience, their phone's gon na come right out. ( mimics sounds of typing ) Immediately. Immediately. Yeah.. So it does link back to that, but again yeah back to successful students and have they taught before It took me a while for me to build my freelance training. ZaWondra Lee: Your classes are WORLD CLASS Marquetta! That's because of the awesome anointing on you and your team! And that wig is flawless!

hawke783: The information that both of you provided was very helpful. I need a hands on class. When are you offering wig classes in Washington DC region?

Richie Navarro: Im interested to join your class. I'm planning to venture into the hair business

Cyn Doll: Great video!

ZaWondra Lee: Jessica and Aretha are WONDERFUL!!!

Tabe Cynthia: Hi ,pls do reply ,is there an online classes ?am in Cameroon how do i get myself registered for that

Arlene Augusta Hair: I cannot do a look and learn class. I have to do a hands on class. I’m definitely not a visual learner. Basically, I need one of your classes. I really didn’t want to make wigs. I did a project on a mannequin head and for some odd reason, I keep on having people trying to buy it as a wig. I’m going to at least put forth the efforts to learn how to make wigs and see where it goes from there. I do have the patience to do latch hook projects so I figure that I would at least give it a try. Yes military life! I’m also a Veteran (Army). Lateness gives me anxiety. 30 minutes is early, 15 minutes is on time and on time is late. I prepare for my clients the day before. I really suck at social media. I’m trying to have a social media presence. I’m so used to the word of mouth. I’m going to try to do better.

RochSolid: Hello. I’m a professional, who wants to learn to make wigs. Prefer a small class. Do either of u hold classes in Tx? Thxs

Tabe Cynthia: Look an learn will be ok fr me since I already had an idea though little

blessed of God: I would love your hands on class
