Elastic Laces Vs Standard Laces – Which Are Faster For Triathletes?

If you want faster triathlon times, one of the best places to look is the transition. Think of it as free speed. To improve at transitions, many triathletes use elastic laces in their runnings. But, are they really faster?

There are two schools of thought when it comes to elastic laces. Firstly, they make your transition quicker, so they must be quicker. And, secondly, yes, they do help for a faster transition, but they're maybe not the fastest laces for the actual running.

Today, we're not going to put the actual running leg to the test. That's because there are just *too* many variables here. However, if you'd like to see that, make sure you leave us a comment and we'll get Mark to go to work and come up with some sort of test...

So, this video is all about the transition. Like we said, this is pretty much free speed since you're saving time rather than needing to get fitter to run faster.

We'd love to read your thoughts on this one, so make sure that you get stuck in down in the comments below.

If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends.

If you're looking to shave time off your triathlon, then transitions are a great way of doing this.. Anything you can do to shorten that part of the race is worth a shot. And that's where these things come in elastic laces.. It'S not because triathletes don't know how to tie their own shoe laces, although that may be an issue for some who knows. These are actually for performance.. It'S an opportunity to save time going from the bike to the run and personally, I've never done a triathlon without them. Although I do know a lot of athletes that don't use them. So there's clearly some personal preferences at play. There's some pros and cons.. So today I'm gon na be running through some of those., I'm going to be putting them through a bit of adversities so that I can help you make your own mind: up. (, upbeat music, ), Okay. So when we're talking about elastic laces, we're often referring to these just a stretchy piece of elastic that we use to replace the standard laces on our running shoes.. But there are obviously a number of alternatives and I've had a little rummage through some of my old kit and pulled out these., So I've got a set of Flatlines. Now. These are really similar to your swimming goggles straps and they work in a very similar way to the elastic laces., And then we've got something a little bit. Different. We've got the Greepers. Now these are actually very similar to your standard fabric laces. But then they have. This very clever, locking mechanism. Now a really interesting option and we'll cover a little bit more on those later. But for now, let's take a closer look at the elastic laces. (, energetic, music ) Right. The idea behind these elastic laces is so that you can slip your feet into your shoes in one swift motion. Obviously, saving the time of having to tie your shoe laces as you normally would., And not to forget, of course, having to slip your feet out of your shoes if you're doing something like a duathlon and running first.. So what happens is the elastics stretch as you put your feet into your shoes and prevent you from misshaping your shoe and then actually equally has enough tension to hold your foot well and securely within the shoe. Right. I'Ve spoken enough about these laces now.. Let'S see what their difference is through a timed: transition. (, upbeat, music, ) Right, I'm gon na do a mock T2. So imagine I've got my bike. Shoes off already.. All I need to do is put my running shoes on and away I go.. So for this. I'M gon na start the clock here at this point. I'm gon na run towards my run: shoes. I'm gon na whack those on and then I'm gon na. Stop the clock. When I pass this point, here. I'm gon na start with with the standard laces and I'm actually gon na - do three runs on each., So I'm gon na do without socks, and I'm gon na do a run with the socks and I'm also gon na. Do a run where I put my socks on within the transition, but I can explain why later. For now, let's get ready for run number one., Let's go. (, energetic music ). Sixteen seconds ( puffs ) Run two with the socks. Three two one skipped. (, energetic music, ), (, puffs ) Fourteen seconds., Two seconds; quicker., Okay, the third run with the standard laces, and I put my socks ready in my shoes so that I put my socks On and then my shoes and away, I go. Three: two one. (, energetic music ), Twenty-eight seconds. Quite a bit, slower.. Okay. So that's the standard laces done and I went 16 seconds on the first run without socks 14 seconds with the socks.. So two seconds quicker and I think that's because basically feet are a little bit clammy when they haven't got the socks them so that just caused a little bit of friction as you're putting the shoe on.. Obviously I would normally recommend putting talcum powder in the shoe. If you are going barefoot. And then obviously I did the final run, where I timed putting the socks on as well., Mainly because if you are going to be putting socks on in your triathlon, you need to account for that time. And that came out almost double The time 28 seconds 14 seconds slower than my quickest run, which isn't a masses of time, although it's double the time, but we'll weigh out the pros and cons but to that later on. But for now let's take these standard laces out and put the elastics on.. Okay, so I've got my elastic laces on and it's worth noting that elastic laces often come with these little locking mechanisms.. Now I personally never bothered with them. I've come from an ITU racing background where every second counts, so I normally just tie them to a good tension. So I can get my foot in easily and also they're tight enough, that they hold the foot securely and well., But the locking mechanisms are really good for you, tightening them or loosening them on the move. So that is personal.. It'S entirely up to you. But for now, let's just test these elastic laces on the three runs. ( upbeat: music, ), Three, two one. ( running music ), Three, two one. ( running music, ); Okay, so that's the runs done with the elastic laces. Times are in.. I went seven seconds with the first run, with socks., So half the time of my quickest run with the standard laces so considerably quicker., Then I went a second quicker again with six seconds with the socks and then obviously I timed myself putting the socks on and Then shoes - and I went 19 seconds on that run, which is quicker than the previous time with standard laces. But I have to say I could have done that quicker.. I did mess it up a little bit., But clearly elastic laces are much quicker and yeah. I mean that's all very well saving a few seconds through transition, but what's it like when you're out running on the road or through the trails And unfortunately that's where things get a little bit fuzzy for elastic laces, because I'd love to be able to show you A time difference between the two but that'd be near impossible and there's so many variable factors at play., But there's clearly so many pros and cons to both. (, rockabilly, music ), As I've shown already quite simply elastic laces are quicker through transition. Pro.. Some argue that elastic laces allow too much movement for the foot within the shoe and therefore affecting the athlete's communication between their foot and the sole of the shoe and then their running, performance. Con., But standard laces can feel a little constricting at times, particularly as a Race goes on and your feet heat and swell, whereas elastic laces allow a little more flexibility for the shoe to expand and relieve any unnecessary pressure. Pro. With the increased movement whilst using the elastic laces, there is the risk of developing blisters. Con.. Now it's not uncommon to get cold hands during a triathlon. Certainly, if you're racing in the UK, like us. And given that you're not doing much with your hands on the bike, it can be quite a bit asked to try and get them to tie some laces up as you go onto the run.. But that's where elastic laces come in. Pro., But the give that elastic laces allow could affect an athlete's biomechanics and if used over time for all their training, it could cause injury. Con.. Well then there is the distance in terrain to consider. So if you are running off road, you might want your foot to be a little more secure within the shoe, particularly if you're running over uneven surfaces.. As for distance as the distance increases, the transition becomes a far smaller percentage of your overall race time., So that need for a quick transition becomes far less important, but maybe the comfort becomes a little more important., As I've mentioned already. I came from an ITU racing background where very second counts. And I stepped up to Half Ironman as a pro, so that quick transition was still big of value in importance for me, whereas for Heather she came to triathlon at half or middle distance then stepped up To full distance., So she really prefers using standard laces., And if we take a look at the pros, there is a mix within them, though a lot of them are still using elastic laces.. But there is this reduction in importance for a quick T2, which is where I think Greepers comes in and are a really interesting option.. So it's still that standard laces good support, but with a quick fastening mechanism.. So it really does come down to personal preference.. What works for you, your different racing styles, distances the terrains, you're racing on, and really what you're happiest using. And, as always, we love to hear what you're doing currently or what your thoughts are on. It.. So do drop them in the comments section below. Global Triathlon Network: Do you use elastic laces? Let us know

viva.cious: Hi! I'm just a youth triathlete that's new to the game, and constantly worrying whether I'm doing this or that right during the triathlon, what's best for me, and if I'm training right and dropping times (I'm a little paranoid, haha). These videos and this channel in general has been so beneficial for me to see exactly what I need to do to be the best athlete I can be, and helps me continue to do the sport I love, while also educating me on the topics. Thank you so much for the channel, as it has saved my life, haha :)

Jules Hargreaves: A friend suggested elastic laces before my first triathlon. I tried them and now use them all the time, even in my walking shoes. I have thin feet, and shoes basically never quite fit, but I can tie the elastics such that the shoes now fit the length of my foot much better. I was therefore quite surprised to hear in the video that there is the ‘con’ that elastics mean feet slip more. Mine slip much less! So, no cons at all for me! And it is nice to come in the house and just be able to slip shoes off...

Nicholas Woodley: I use elastic laces all the time. Even on my work shoes for a quick transition at home time.

Joey C: I used elastic races for shorter distance races for a season and loved them but used them for a marathon and they made my feet numb from being too tight causing muscle issues for the rest of the race so i switched back to conventional. The quick release version you showed for normal laces is interesting, would definitely give that a go.

Jack Thomas: Just started using elastic laces and I have to say I love the ease they bring.

Stephen Jones: I always race with elastic laces but do the majority of my training with normal laces so that I have good stability for most of my running. Will put my elastics in a week or so before a race to get the tension dialed. I do love it when you see people racing who have spent thousands of £'s on a set of deep sectioned wheels to shave time off their bike split, only to give it all back by having a sit down while they thumble with their shoe laces in T2

Andrew Butterworth: I use elastic races for my running shoes all the time, Getting ready for Ironman Bolton next weekend and may try a run or 2 with normal laces this week to see how they feel. I have never had problems with the elastics and like that i can tighten them easily with the fixings if i need to, I would be worried that normal laces would come undone when running.

Coalition Pictures: I almost skipped this video but I'm glad I watched it! I use elastic laces on race day and depending on the variables I notice I develop blisters. I've run a 1:21 Half with no problems but then again I've developed a blister during a mile interval workout. For me it may depend on how hot it is during the event. I live in Texas so training runs these days are on average over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and I tend to sweat a lot! Back to the drawing board!

Rafał Dadej: I’m using it all my training and races. It’s important to fit them before race on training session, but then it’s perfect solutions. What’s more for me, they never untied during race and we don’t have to tied twice...

Ian Loughead: I started with regular laces and tried tying things on a cold day. That didn't work. Since then, all elastic laces all the time and I love them. I have used a variety and the ones I like the most are Xtenex laces. They let me adjust easily on the fly and also set the tension to different amounts throughout the lacing.

ian povey: since starting triathlon ive put elastic laces in all my running shoes and never had any issues..working with a budget I use the toggle that way I can use the laces again when I get new shoes the only down side to that is the new shoes have to be blues to match the laces I already have

Andy Heilmann: I use elastic laces and love them! I leave my elastics tied in place all the time so I know my shoes will always feel just as tight

Josh Wait: Help! I have my first 70.3 on the weekend in Edinburgh, and I’m really struggling to get my wetsuits off. I made the mistake of getting a front entry Run swim Run wetsuit (Huub), and I can’t role my shoulders back enough to get it off. Any tips?

Timothy Walker: How do you tie elastics? Is it in a way that they can be removed without cutting them later?

Miguel Sáez de Montagut: Also, may I ask, how do triathletes install their food bags over the top tube behind de top cap without any straps? Whats the best way to install it to make it clean and don’t destroy the frame Thanks a lot guys!

richardtris4cake: Great film . Very interesting and I’m about to order some elastic laces

hydra66: what about a velcro strap design on a well fitting shoe?

Pets, Plants & FishTanks: i just tried, took me five seconds to get two trainers on n tie laces up. Wonder if clipless actually save 5 seconds, I reckon I could swim in a light pair

Rafael Mondini-Bueno: GCN would be proud of your leg tan pattern, Mark!

rgvpete: Once I started using elastic laces for racing, I haven't looked back. I now use them on every running shoe I own.

Luca Spaccatrosi: How about the new zealand tri team trick of same shoes on bike and run - at least in super sprint?

James Milne: Pro - I havent looked back since elastic in all walks of life. I dont get the pain across the bridge of the foot with time as my foot heats and swells. elastic all the way

TJ C: How about those running shoes with BOA lacing system?

Candy Girl: I’ve been using Yankz for years and love them.

Anton Peterson: As some other commenters have said why isn't there as many companies using Boa or any other type of ratchet system?

Bastien Touzeau: GREEPERS! all the way! elastic laces have always given me problem during races with blisters. Since is discovered Greepers, never had problems anymore

Dennis 3809: Here I am asking this question... Why even bother with elastic laces when you can do this with default ones? Here's how I do this... Step#1 :Tie up your shoes really well without it feeling uncomfortable! STEP#2 : Grather the laces and take them under one of the zig zags! STEP#3 : (On the second use) just put your foot halfway into the shoe, grap the tongue with one hand and put your mindle and index finger inside the shoe and push the hill back,at the same time push your foot a bit further in and.... It will be on in no time It might sound hard but it is just a way to tie up your laces once and not having to do it again for months! I do it to both running and casual shoes I wear and Once I did that for my StanSmiths I used them every day without having to tie them up for about 3 MONTHS

Trevor Clark: I use a shoe horn works well just as fast and I get to use normal laces.

Miguel Sáez de Montagut: Elastic laces all year long. Best decision you can make.

ironman tooltime: I just never untie my laces

TheTonicro: boa dials could be a solution

Roberto B: Shortcut: elastics. Welcome.

Daniela Widmer: I wearing the XTENEX elastic laces

Roy Thuv: Salomon all the way!

Peter Kracik: You forgot the biggest pros: they can't untie! Nothing worse that untied laces during race

Haassan1: Screw transitions, I really couldnt care less.

Brett Bale: Justification for barefoot runners.

gcarerer: 8:23 "i think [BLANK] comes in, a really interesting option" --> ? what is that? :-o

Yannis Stambolitis: Cool Video

Kane: Why don't they put BOAs on running shoes?

Aaron C: Not accurate, need 5 Gallon Bucket to sit on :P

Pienimusta: "Sairaan nopee - ja värikäs"

PlanesTrainsAutos: ❤️ Heather. So cute.

Shydn Crumph: gunshot wound on left thigh?

dee dee: BLERP
