How To Install Or Replace A Storm Or Screen Door Closer

Instructions for installing or replacing storm and screen door closers. This step-by-step instructional guide shows an Ideal Security closer, but the steps are the same for most door closers on the market. This is good for Standard and Heavy door closers (those *without* torsion bars), including our SK9, SK80, SK1730, SK4730, SK4900, and SK8730 series of door closers.

Hi, i'm kyle from ideal security. Today, i'm going to show you how to install our storm and screen door closers an ideal. We'Ve got a complete range of door closers before getting started. Let'S make sure you've got the right one. There are three classes of door: closer standard, heavy and heavy, with torsion bar, the manufacturer of your door chose the best closer for it, based on weight, thickness frame material and the amount of glass and the door. You should always replace your existing door closer with one of the same class. If your door closer, has a torsion bar like this. You need a heavy closer with a torsion bar if it doesn't you'll need to measure the diameter of the tube standard door. Closers have tube diameters of one and a quarter inches heavy door. Closers have diameters of one and a half inches all of our door. Closers come in regular and quick hold variations, and some include storm chains as well. This video will help you install any of our standard or heavy door closers without torsion bars. Okay, now that you're sure you've got the right door closer. Let'S get to work start with the door closed, determine the position for the jamb bracket. The straight edge of the bracket should be 2 and 1/8 inches away from the door make sure the bracket is facing the right way, with the straight edge away from the door. Install the jamb bracket using the four longer screws, if you're not using the existing holes, you may want to drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood of your door frame now open the door and slip the hold-open washer onto the rod attach the door closer to The jamb bracket, using the shorter of the two pins, pull open the door closer a bit slide the washer past the lugs lining it up with the mark on the rod release the closer so that the washer is now holding it open. This is called pre-tensioning. The closer next rotate the door closer, if necessary, so that the pinholes are on the side closest to the door, attach the door to the tube. Using the longer pin you'll see, there are two pin holes on both the door closer and the bracket make sure to use the holes at the far ends close the door and line up the bracket so that it's touching the door. If you need to drill new holes, mark the hole positions, note that this bracket can accommodate a wide range of screw hole positions. So if you have existing holes on your door, you should be able to reuse them, install the bracket on the door using the two shorter screws. This may be easier if you first remove the bracket from the closer reattach, the closer to the bracket with the installation done, let's test the door closer, open the door and release the washer. Remember we headed pre-tensioned. If your door closer includes a spring-loaded speed release washer, it will release itself automatically when you open the door, let your door close, it should shut smoothly and securely. If your door doesn't close or the speed is too fast or too slow, you can adjust the tension on the door closer. There'S a tension screw at the front end of the door closer turn the screw counterclockwise to have the door closed, faster or harder turn the screw clockwise to have it closed more slowly. Our door closers also feature a seasonal adjustment in the standard installation position. The door closure is set for a door with a glass window. If you remove your window in the summer, your door will be lighter. You can account for this by using the second pinhole on the tube to attach it to the door bracket. Trapper.167: You nailed that instructional video on door closers !!! Great job!!! I am one that needs all the information. This was the 6th video I had watched. Not that I couldn't of just went ahead and installed the closer without the video, I like to know the best possible way and measurements before I drill and install. Even though the closer will perform, I believe it looks better and functions the best when you're using precise measurements. You broke everything down perfect and went through the hardware and how it works . As well as what do in different seasonal weather conditions. You've sold me sure. I actually for more confident on installing and knowing where I can go and call for the best advice on my next project. Thanks again . Great job

Tom Cogburn: I am THE worst when it comes to home maintenance. So when my storm door closer broke last week, I thought I was going to have to replace the entire door. Thankfully, I came across your video. I went to the hardware store and found what I needed. I came home and fixed it myself. It took about half an hour. Thanks for the video!

T G: Wow, this is so helpful! I thought I was going to have to ring up a handyman, but I'll be able to do this simple project on my own. I'm off to Home Depot! Thank you for making things much easier.

Djard: Unlike the other videos on the subject at which I looked, you folks included information about the spring and adjustment screw. Well done! Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial.

Rudolph Pieters: This tutorial was superb. I used is on 7/16/21, to install a closer on my own. Straight✔

Melissa v: This was so helpful, thank you! Got mine adjusted perfectly now. :)

100PercentOS2: Great instruction video. I guess there is a little more to installing a storm door closer than I thought. But I have a good understanding of how to do this since I have installed inside door closers and adjusted them. I installed one on my closet door so it will shut on its own since I forget to shut it. I'm terrified of bats and that is the reason I did this. Thank you so much.

Shadowcat6lives: Straight to the point and simple. Thank you for the video

nick reno: Very helpful. Short, precise and to the point. Thank you.

mitch c: Great and very understandable instructions !!!!!!

tcsgirl68: This was helpful somewhat. I'm not installing one new but rather putting the main tube back on already installed brackets. I had to remove main tube piece from both brackets so that I could slide the jammed "lock" back down the rod. When I unjammed the locking piece, the rod sprung back into the "tube". Now when I reattach one end of the main tube piece to a bracket, it's too short to reach the other bracket (the door is in the closed position when I'm trying to attach.) I can't figure out how to have the rod extend out so I can attach that end to the bracket on the door frame. Watching how you install a new door closer, I'm wondering why the rod on mine would be extended anyway. It seems it should only extend when the door is being opened.

LILIANA ATALA: Thank you very much,1st time i did this, very helpful video, im not a handyman , now im very proud of my self, you making easier

jehu davis: I like it you really didnt make me over think this. Very easy thanks!

pices100rt: Absolutely awesome video....thank you for posting this.

Lynn Merritt: worked perfectly! Thanks for the specifications.

Sean Marroquin: Perfect video Straight to the point Measurements locations

Shearexpert: Great tutorial. Pretty confident that even I can do this...lol

David Hughey: Great video! Could have done without being spoken to like a second grader but very solid tutorial!

MarkyMark: This video helped me install a closer on my front door, adjust the closer on my kitchen door and now replace and repair the shoddy work done on the front door at my moms house by some bum handyman; thanks for this

Kathy Holland: Thank you very easy to install. It works great when the front door is open. I know how to adjust the screw. When the front door is closed it will not close all the way no matter how I adjust the screw. What can I do?

Jason S: Thanks man, I just release the tension now the screen door doesn't take long to close.

7 Luna: I like your energy Kyle. Thank you for the info

kelly girl: Perfect video. Step by step without a bunch of yakking in between which can only be confusing.

Kathy VanDoren: Very well done video, the best!

Josh Parekh: Well made informative helpful video...thanks..

MsPaula NLAA: I just took off, cleaned, painted, and successfully replaced my mom`s 20 plus year old hardware with these directions.

Ramiro Gonzalez: Very helpful video update about Door Closer. Thank you and Congratulations.

Hello There: Great video---thank you

M'sheArt2: Hi, is there a feature on the standard size closer to keep the door slightly propped open? Is it something I can achieve using the washer shown at 2:21? Thank you in advance. Mia.

Ruben Flores: I would suggest if possible to anyone installing door closer to reinforce door jamb mount with to a base metal plate with 4 self tapping screws plate to wood/aluminum door frame for added strength.

louis mays: U can use wood filler for stripped out door holes

Carmen L M Cluck: OH THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH... SOMEONE KNOCKED ON MY DOOR AND OPENED THE STORM DOOR TO KNOCK... THEY DIDN'T SHUT IT TIGHT AND WE HAD 60 MPH WINDS... AND YOU GUESSED IT... THE WIND BLEW IT OPEN I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES... AND PULLED THE SCREWS 1/2 OUT OF THE DOOR JAM... SO I NEEDED HELP TO DO IT MYSELF... THANKS AGAIN SO VERY MUCH...

daethule: What is the benefit/point of pre-tensioning it? This is the first video I've seen that mentions it.

Roadtripsy : What kind of screws to be used to fix on the aluminum frame. Mine usually come out after few days.

Joan Fernandez: You could show which way is counter clockwise or clockwise. . It would help a lot thank you.

Mama T: Mine closer popped open and came unpinned up top at the frame. The washer device seems locked and I'm unable to extend it to attached it to the frame and pin it. Suggestions?

Toulon505: Thank you!!

Terry Donovan: will the door open 90 degrees when installed? I'm not getting it

Cathy DeCraene: Thought I needed a new closer, just needed adjustment

Mechelle Mcelfresh: Works great

Lisa Herrera: My door is just like this one in the video. However my son took it off because he didn't want anyone to get hurt. Well unfortunately he threw it away. So I don't know which one I would need. Can you tell me the name of this one please? Thank you

Brian Bacich: Anyone know what I can do to stop the squeal coming from the door closer? I tried a little white lithium grease and that didn’t help at all

Cameron Lake: Can’t find tutorial videos like this anymore

Ruben Flores: Oops... For wood frame better to use fat wood screws.

KAOS: I've never seen one soo low on the door frame as our are at the top of the door. Is that an American thing?

Grangy27: I just installed an Ideal closer. It "bangs shut" at the last two- three inches.

Roger Braasch: Ideal Brand Closer not Wright Closer

Frank Clifton: Faster or Harder?

rob smith: Strange them being at the bottom of the door. They are obvious and ugly. Where I live. They are on the top of the door and are hardly noticeable.

Karl Knutson: Do you talk like that in real life?
