Hi guys and welcome back to my channel and if you're new here hi my name is Martha, and here Bota is your waist. I share with you tips and tricks that can help you leave more zero-waste with less. Today. I want to talk about a very discussed topic in the zero waste industry, which is shampoo bars, so this is probably actually definitely the number one thing I get asked all the time is how to make a shampoo bar the reason why it's probably something that many People are curious about is that it's also one of the most difficult zero-waste swats to to get right or to find the works for yourself, and I've also talked a little bit about my zero waste hair care, routine and rice. You always hear clear journey, which I will also link up somewhere here. Shampoo bars are normally formulated using two different methods. The first method is a method that I've seen was becoming quite popular, especially on Instagram in social media platforms, and that is the cold process method, which is the traditional method for making soap. That'S the method I apply used as well to make all of my soaps, which you see here in the back. The second method is instead, a method that is very different and is simply by using ingredients called surfactants which are very simple foods: detergents, both a soap and a detergent work very similarly to take out any dirt and wash it off with water. So if they work in a very similar way, how come they have very different results on our hair and how do we choose so the main difference between these two types of ingredients is the pH, so the pH will determine if something is more acidic or more Basics, so, for example, vinegar is very acidic. Well, something like bleach is very basic. A soap shampoo naturally has a high pH. So that's around eight to ten. Normally, while a shampoo made with detergents should have a more acidic pH more around five and six. Now the key thing here is that our here loves acidic things, because it's naturally acidic. So if we use a soap based shampoo bars, it will make our hair feel very coarse. It will just throw off the pH or our hair, which is why it's recommended, if you really want to use a soap base, shampoo bar to follow it, an acidic rinse with vinegar or even better, with water and citric acid. So you've probably heard that also when you use a soap base, shampoo bar your hair need to go through like a transition phase, because I need to you know, get rid of any kind of commercial products arrested you well. I haven't made this journey myself. I really wanted to believe that so much, but I don't think that's true, is just the soaps are not really suitable for hair care because of the high pH the most amazing thing you could use for your hands for your body because they are made with oils And they're very nourishing they're really natural, just I use them on your hair and that's my that's my suggestion: they're not really made for that. Instead, I really recommend choosing a shampoo bar that is formulated to have a balanced, pH, and also that has really good ingredients that are meant for hair care and they are eco-friendly. One of the most known detergent is, for example, SLS, and a lot of people think that, as less is absolutely super chemical and it's such a horrible thing, it will cause cancer and all these things. I don't think this isn't true or there isn't like that. Scientific, like back up for these claims, the only thing that is true is that SLS is very strong, and so, if you use a shampoo bar that has SLS in it, it will likely really kind of clean that. Well, that could leave your hair feeling kind of stretch from its oil. Instead, I really recommend for more delicate detergents. For example, very good one in the shampoo bar could be sodium coke. Well, as I donate all the detergents they have like glucose it. The word in the end, those are normally very eco-friendly, naturally derived detergents that are non-irritant not that all stripping as sls could be. So if you're interested to learn more about these detergents and kind of like to get more used to, you know knowing how to read the label - and i have linked down below a blog post with more information about this. Or you can also sign up for my mini-series on shampoo bars and how to choose shampoo bars during the mini series, which is going to be like a series of emails that I will send you. I will also share with you acquits that you can take to find out exactly what hair type you have and what kind of shampoo bar what kind of ingredients could be very good for your hair, so that's it for today. Briseis: This was explained so well. I'm not completely against so-called chemicals because I learned the hard way that natural isn't always the gentler option! The issue I have is how do I know which ingredients (that I can't pronounce) are necessary vs the superfluous ones that can harm. Your video helped me choose a shampoo bar.

inkdrops: Thank you so much, this really helped. I’ve been using the Aussie shampoo for a while but wanted to transition to using a shampoo bar. I have wavy, medium thickness hair that’s usually really “poofy”, but I figured out how to manage it - until I started using the shampoo bar. My hair has been really frizzy and I hate the way it looks and feels when washing, but I’ve been persistent on using the shampoo bar because of the “transition period”. In the meantime, I’m going to look into a better bar that will fit my hair type. Thank you again <3

Es3iya: What a wonderful video. I got shampoo bars with pH of 8 and my hairs feels horrible. I never knew bars with ph 5-6 existed. Luckily i can use the shampoo bars that i bought with ph8 also on my body :)

T S: This is the clearest source I've found so far on picking out a good shampoo bar, thanks! I've been wasting a lot of money on bars that leave a waxy coating in my hair..which must mean they are soap-based.

Ella Villa: Thanks for this, I've been doing research on DIY hair products since I'm a curly head and products come and go for me since I use so much, my hair is so thick and my outrageous bottle consumption is just making me feel guilty, It's hard to find shampoo and conditioner bars that are fit for my hair, and even tho I found one, it was a little pricey so I'm looking for ways to somehow make it sustainable for myself :)

Chiara M: Hello! Thank you for the clear info. I ve been using solid shampoo for almost a year, but I still see different "sensations" when I use differents one (like "heavy hair"). Now I know why!

Towel folding tutorial: I just bought my first bar shampoo and I was searching around to learn more about the good and bad of using bar shampoo vs liquid shampoo. I am grateful to find your website, I have learned something from you. Thank you!

Priscila Ortiz: I love the way you simplified the what I’ve heard but didn’t quite understand before. Can’t wait to get the mini series!

Katya A: I love your video Marta, you have clearly explained the differences and now I know why I was struggling to find a shampoo bar that worked for me. Thank you!

Alejandra Cabrera: i love your scientific approach to this topic. the video and blog post is very informative

shizishan: I just started to use Viori shampoo bars and they feel amazing. The pH is 5. I feel like it's much less stripping than the commercial shampoos I've used.

Carib 4 Life: Thank you for speaking more about soap based shampoo bar PH.

Rekkr: I like your video and to be honest I haven't liked a video on soap ever. You seem to cut the BS and you don't pretend that just because it's a "chemical" it's bad for you so for that I've subed to you. I've only seen this one video and I'm probably going to go through more of your videos. I've spent days trying to find anything on soap/shampoo/conditioning bars that is remotely like this. I haven't gone through all your videos yet but I would love to see a video on just the bare minimum chemicals and oil/s you need to make a shampoo and/or conditioning bar then what you need to do to expand on the recipes to make something that is your own and if possible how to make the liquid stuff too. I'm going to be trying to make some shampoo and conditioner bars at some point soon so I'll be watching as much or your stuff as I can. Thank you!

Elisa Marini: Nice and clear video, really goes to the point ☺️

Okay Tree: How DO you find out the PH of a soap you find in a store?

Orewa Houston: Hey! I love your videos, I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I’ve been using a shampoo bar for a while & I notice that everytime I use it some of the hair dye from my hair drips out, it washes out with the water and I was wondering if you knew anything about this? I asked the company if it was colour safe and they said yes. The ingredients are: Coconut Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Castor Oil, Olive Oil, Shea Butter, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Milk, Water, Lye, Indigo, Lavender and Rosemary Essential Oils. I’m just scared that my hair colour is going to fade quicker... previously I was using just ACV & tea to rinse my hair so maybe it’s just any dye washing out that never got shampoo’d ever.. what do you think?

Ahu Karan Jespersen: Thanks for the information! I was wandering why my hair got so weird every time I tried the shampoo bars.

Hanna W: Ive been on a stubborn journey to make my hair transform to schampoo bars. Im nearly 2 weeks in and start to loose patience. My hair is greasy and awful.

Beth: Hello, will your solid shampoo bar work on fine, straight hair? So many of these products are for a different hair type, like yours for example. I’m excited to try making my own shampoo bar as I’m already an experienced cold process soap maker. Thanks for the information and hosting the webinar.

Martha Hawkinson-Michau: I recently started using actual bar soap for my hair. It actually seems like it’s working better than the shampoo that I was using? ‍♀️ Regular shampoo always seems to irritate my scalp and make me itchy. I’ve also had less breakage since I switched.

Hilary Sutherland: What kind of shampoo did your family use before synthetics were readily available? Soap is not for everyone, that is true! But that's because those who think it's a good idea to use synthetics are not up to the challenge. It takes determination and dedication to make the transition to soap shampoo. Detergents are simply bottle shampoos without the water content. They are also not eco friendly, which has to go along with being zero waste.

Lisbeth Santiago: When is the next course available? Super interested!

Jane Doe: After using shampoo bars my hair went from beachy waves and the occasional curls at the end to curly ringlets. I'm so glad I switched.

boop: Thankyou for your honesty. So refreshing.

Julie Caron: Hi! Can you recommend good shampoo bars? For example, is the one from The Unscented company any good?

Maria José Felício: Amazing info! Thank you for this video!

NALA music: thank you! very clear and complete info! I finally understood!

Isa Perez: Thank you so much for this video ❤️

Georgie: Can you do a tutorial on how to make low pH bar soap/shampoo?

Suds & Bees: I have psoriasis so using regular soap on my body is too harsh. I have found using shampoo bars I make with gentle surfactants works best as I keep them at a pH of 5-6

n t: sls causes drying of hair and scalp that leads to hair breakage and baldness apart from other reasons. so if this sounds less scary, then go ahead and use shampoos with SLS.

pineappletea: my hair feels silky smooth and soft when i use soap and acv rinse though! i oil my hair the previous night and wash it thoroughly with a tea tree clay soap, then rinse with acv/water solution

missdube1: I hate the feeling of soaps on my skin as well, find them all super drying. Even a normal body wash is less drying than a moisturizing soap. Never need body lotion unless i wash with soap. I really want to use liquid shampoo and liquor body wash and i want to like them cause I’m wasting so much plastic…

offshoot100: Do you have a degree or higher education in pharmaceuticals ? Just wondering because you said you didn't think SLS was harmful though you did hear something about it causing cancer

Léa Salles: Hi Martha, what do you think of Marseille soap for hair?

Snow White: Can I use baby bar soap for example johnson's baby soap on my hair. Technically it has low pH.

michelle Souza: Hello....ur video was very informative...I want to know how to make diff shampoo bars ...I already am making cold process soap with coconut oil

Farah Hameed: Hi Your video is sooo amazing ... I'm a mphil Chemistry studend .. My research work is also on shampoo bar kindly guide me about how to start my research on shampoo bar

Damaris: Very interesting, thanks !

Maureen Fernando: As you said sls is harsh too, may I make a cp shampoo bar with all the hair friendly oil and after all you do rinse the product from your hair?

boop: "transition" is just another way of saying I can't admit it's not working LOL

aashina miya: I am using shampoo bar but after taking shower it kind of feel sticky. Is this Normal? This is my 1st time using it

Abirami S: What would be the ideal ph for hair ?

Kasie De la fosse: I don’t agree, my hair is very thick and very coarse and I’m allergic to sodium laurel sulfate, with regular shampoo and conditioner it irritates my scalp and no matter the conditioner it always felt weighed down and greasy no matter how much I rinsed, since using CP shampoo bars my scalp and hair has been so beautiful and healthy and I only have to wash it once a week, i used a surfactant based bar and my scalp got so irritated, plus I don’t like the idea of using chemicals, especially on my head and with continuous use surfactants are really bad for you

Kerrie Chilton: Can you please tell me how I can make my CP Shampoo recipe a PH of below 6? Can I add citric acid to the mixture at trace? Thank you :)

ABRAR SHAIKH: Hindi Justice for Sameer wankhede sir ji and Rhea shovik

Leonor Rios Morales: Hi, lov u videos. What do you think about SCI and BTMS?

SHALINI M: Can we used home made sekkekai shampoo is it gud

hannah eisenmann: Do you have a shampoo bar you recommend?

Matrona ES: So shampoo > Apple cider rinse> condition?

Josephine Bonello: I would to known what type of hair I have

tripudium17: Am confused: doesn't skin also have acidic pH? Why are soap based bars ok for skin but not for hair?

charles wiggins: That's as clear as mud.

Fadwa Fadawich: How SLS can be friendly?it's not natural actually it damages the hair?

JL: How to choose shampoo bar link doesn’t work

Bb Dd: SLS is not for curly hair ☹️ I hate it

zindagi shindagi: Can i speak to youuu
