Hi everybody welcome to another episode of dear derm, i'm dr mona gohara, a dermatologist in new haven connecticut. So my name is dr alain kikam. I am a dermatologist and the founder of brown skin derm. It'S a platform dedicated towards everything, skin care and derm in skin of color. Today, we're talking about optimal scalp and hair care for brown and black hair oftentimes people, clump, hair and scalp hair together, like it's this thing and sometimes they can be, do you distinguish them, or do you kind of put them under the same umbrella? So i put them together, like one cannot be better without the other they're all both needed. It'S like it's like this ecosystem of hair hair care. You know you have to take care of the hair. You have to take care of the scalp. Scalp is like a farm bed, you know you want to grow um plants or yield fruits. You have to start with that, making sure that you have the adequate nutrient, the actual adequate irrigation to the area. It'S the same thing with your scalp. You have to give it all the elements it needs to grow, healthy hair, so scalp care is actually very important, and i emphasize that to my patients, let's just talk about kind of like optimal hair care for brown and black women. Now this is also not something that can be kind of. Let'S recognize the fact that not all brown and black hair is the same. I mean we have all kinds of different textures, it's very prone to getting dry and that's that's the same thing for many people with afro hair. So you realize that washing it every day is like just impractical or you know, washing it ever so often can strip it off. You know, moisture and that can lead to hair breakage and you know just unhealthy hair. I wash my hair, probably like two times like every one or two weeks. You know a period span depending even on my hairstyle. How about conditioning conditioning to me is very important is the way i restore moisture to my hair and it's very very important when you have afro kinky coily hair, to be able to restore that moisture. I'M a big believer in deep conditioning and then you want to increase circulation right so massage it i mean any black woman will tell you. One of the reasons we love going to our beauty store is just getting that scalp massage, and you know what the way they wash your hair and then protection. I use like a satin bonnet at night to just reduce the friction that can happen sometimes against your pillow. You have breakage your practices. What you do with your hair right, yeah, avoiding like tight styles. I just recently got my braids done and i was at the braid shop and i told my hairdressers and i re-emphasized this all throughout you know the hours i was there when my hair was getting break like you cannot touch my edges, so i just make sure That they don't they don't even get anywhere near there because they were insisting they're like we could grab that like. No. This is um the deep treatment mask with sea kelp and argan oil and raw shea butter butter by shea moisture. Love that i love it. I'Ve used this ever since i went um natural meaning for those who don't understand what i'm talking about meaning. Ever since i stopped relaxing chemically processing my hair, i recently i think, up to like up until eight months ago, someone introduced me to camille rose. So that's a camille rose, um algae, renewed, deep conditioner. I swear by this one. It i mean the texture is really really great so on saturday mornings, while i'm doing some work here and there i usually put this on my hair and then i do a dip. Add some heat i have like a heat cap and then i rinse it off and it feels so good. Lastly, another moisturizing lotion mainly for dry scalp is this one by lipso that i also use it's very very light. It'S not really for the hair, but the scalp. That'S what i love about it that a product that is real. I love that so thank you. Everybody for joining us on this episode of dear durham and thanks dr adeline for taking time out of her busy schedule to join us and share knowledge with us, make sure to follow and subscribe to well and good and make sure to follow brown skin dermal. You will learn a lot. I promise and leave us any questions or comments below we'll catch you next time. Thanks guys, bye,

JaNae Allen: Thank you ladies for this video. Can you post more video for black and brown hair care tips There is not enough information on hair care for the black community. Can we get more insight on shampoo, conditioner, oils etc.

Kristine Vale: Hi, can you make a video about the curly girl method - is it a safe method to be used as no shampoo is used, only conditioners. I am following cgm for 2 months now and my scalp gets very greasy quite quickly, but it was greasy before the cgm too and I have a 2b and 2c type curls - it was greasy on my scalp and I had dry ends of my hair. I can see that cgm helps my hair but not to a scalp.. Lots of cgm followers told me it's a natural process as my hair was used to sulphate shampoos with harsh ingredients and it might even take 6 months until my scalp ''calms down'' - is that true? Thank you in advance :)
