When preparing to detangle my hair, I always start from a twist out. This ensures my strands are all mostly going in One Direction. When I'm detangling, I can easily work on individual twists in the next step. I separate my hair into four grouped sections because I have permanent Parts. I just pick up the four twists that were on that side to make a section. Next, I hydrate my hair. This is just warm water for my shower filter. I give my hair a light spray on both sides. When you have thick hair, your hair literally has an inside and outside. I make sure I press the water, and so the middle will be hydrated also now it is time to lubricate. There is something about grape seed oil that penetrates and lubricates hair. Like no other oil, I have tried. Finally, I stretch my hair in a bantu knot. This step is vital. It along Gates any Tangles and helps the shed hairs to slide out easily. I would never detangle my hair when it's coiled now this. This is the part of the prep process that makes the magic bagging for 24 hours. I'Ve timed it and 24 hours is the optimal time it gives my hair the stretch and lubrication. It needs to slide out the shed hairs with minimal effort if I use less than the full 24 hours the stretch isn't enough and the tangles are crazy. My hair Tangles so easily at the sight of water. All of these steps combined to help me easily remove these shed hairs and not pull out my hair. I love how the hairs just slide out without snagging. Yes, I do get Tangles still, but they are also easily removed. Detangling 4C natural hair is where most of the frustration comes in and we are an easily frustrated people, but it's mainly because we are working against our hair, not with it hydration, moisturization, lubrication and stretch. These are the key techniques to an easy detangling session. Work with your hair know what it likes and how to be gentle with it, and you will have cloudy pillowy soft hair that retains length for days.

Humble Butterfly: Learning and practicing your techniques are so helpful. Y'all, I'm retaining length.

browninTT: I do the stretching technique now with the Bantu knot.❤❤❤It really is helpful. I do the same steps minus the 24hrs. I work six days out of seven Most i can do is overnight and I can see the difference just imagine how it will be after 24

Ecee Okenwa: Watching your videos over and over is helping me get much better at finger detangling. I don't regret embarking on this journey . Thank you Dr. Nica.

aniekaskaf: Your hair always looks so soft and fluffy after your detangling session. I love seeing how thick and huge it is. I won't get that density and I am 100% okay with that. I wouldn't know what to do with it or how to behave lolol. Btw, i sent you a link on one of your vids yesterday.

aniekaskaf: You make it look so easy and effortless, but girl, it sure is not lol. I finger detangle first but I have to follow up with a tool or else my hair feels so rough when I style it in my twists. My tangles seem to be centered along the middle part, the root of the twists that bracket it, is hell to detangle.

Oluwanifesimi Akinwale: Baggying does wonders . I don’t do a full 24 yet. But overnight does so well for me . Learned from the best !!!

MzBatyah: Great video. I'll have to incorporate the bantu knots and baggying method to see how that works for me. Thanks for the tips!

From A to 4z: With permanent parts, do you have any tips for not creating too much tension along the center part/crown area?

simplynatural23: Do u just pull the loose hair out? Or do you actively separate the section to remove tangles?

Aurora Lamosime: Thank you very much for this video. Been natural a while but I'm always on the lookout for golden tips. I'll definitely try that baggy method. If I may ask, how do you create permanent parts?

terion glenn: I have been looking for your channel! What are your thoughts on using grease as a sealant? I've been seeing it floating around and I know you to be one that really understands the science of hair...

Ms.X: Looks like I’m going back to the health food store to get some grape seed oil they saw me there yesterday lool! Thanks Nica!

adorablebelle: your hair is AMAZING!

Oluwanifesimi Akinwale: I always love seeing your super long hair

Tai-chan: yes, i agree with you. while fairy knots are my archenemy.. tangled hair is the bane of my existence...
