This Is Why You Shouldn'T Use Coconut Oil On Your Natural Hair

Coconut oil doesn’t ACTUALLY moisturize your hair, it really “clogs” the hair cuticle. It prevents moisture from getting in while making your hair feel like straw. Similar to blue magic aka grease

Please don’t come on here with “it’s a cultural thing you wouldn’t understand” argument

I’ve been here since the beginning of the natural hair movement and I know how this started. People started using coconut oil out of desperation because we were looking for a way to moisturize our hair

I am behind the chair and I experience various hair textures and coconut oil has been detrimental to them all! After I clarified her hair and started styling it, she said she felt an IMMEDIATE difference.

Oily hair does not equal moisturized hair

We actually moisturized her hair and the end result was soft touchable curls

Hey guys so this client used coconut oil in her hair, and I was educating her at the bowl telling her that coconut oil isn't the best way to moisturize. It actually doesn't moisturize at all. So we have to clarify her like three times so I blow dried, her hair out prior to trimming it, so she could see what needed to go. Um and I didn't actually even show the whole trim throughout this. I never do. Then we went back to the bowl, I wet her down, so we could begin her curl defining process, and here I am just defining her curls, I'm using the products that I use to define curls um and she had never seen her hair like this. So this is before we got under the dryer after she came from under the dryer. I defused her hair for a little bit to catch the pieces at the ends that were not dried. This was the end result if you love this drop of fire Emoji in the comments, and let me know what kind of questions you may have. I will also be in Houston for the month of December, taking clients

theniceone06: Ok, I thought it was just me. Coconut oil has never worked for me. It just sits on top of my hair like "Hey girl"

Mrs. Worldwide: OIL DOES NOT MOISTURIZE. It locks moisture in. It seals it it. It also softens hair because it’s a conditioner. Water moisturizes, oils locks in the moisture.

Sarah Alexandra: The best thing I heard around the whole misconception of oil hydrating hair was a stylist asking someone if when they're thirsty would they drink oil. Best comparison I've ever heard.

Mxx05: It’s always “don’t use this” but never give any better alternatives

Tori Williams: My gosh what a beautiful turn out! She looks amazing and her hair looks super healthy!! ❤

Jana Reid: God I wish I had a stylist near me who cared about the health of hair and not how good a weave looks you’re amazing

nicestdrummergrl: "This is why you shouldn't use coconut oil in your hair"..... (doesn't tell us WHY, but shows us very normal looking 4c hair)

Pamela Bartee: Coconut oil is too penetrating to be a sealant oil. It’s actually capable of penetrating every layer of your hair. But if your hair tends to be very porous and dry , coconut oil will be sucked up and appear to be very drying and ineffective. But other hair that isn’t dry and tends to be looser may benefit greatly. It’s like using coconut oil on your skin in the summer and it’s perfect then when winter comes, coconut oil doesn’t stand a chance.

Dreadlock Nation Limited: Coconut oil is amazing and works excellent for my hair.. it works well in our climate and I will always use it

Rachel Michael: She is defining her curls using the product she uses to define her curls with.

Authentically Fonze: I think it depends on your hair porosity because everybody's hair isn't the same. My cuzin uses coconut oil and it's works wonders for her hair. I suggest a lot of people to do the hair porosity test. Her hair looks AMAZING

audrey titchoup: NOT "YOU SHOULD NOT”... What's not good for one is good for another !!!

Theresa M: Well, I think the main point here is what your hair loves and doesn't love. My sister's hair thrives on Coconut oil while mine sheds alot when I use it. I now 100% agree with what one YouTuber said; THE NATURAL HAIR COMMUNITY HAS BECOME TOXIC! Don't use this, don't do that, oils are bad for your hair, etc ‍♀️. Ladies, just use whatever works for you...better still use whatever your mom and granny used! These natural hair stylists ain't God!

Zen Riley23: It depends on how your hair absorbs it. Porosity matters

Phyllis Govan: What's best is to define natural curls and keep it soft.

Dawn Brienzi: Honestly everyone's hair is so different! Coconut oil makes my hair so shiny and helps it grow! That's what it does for me but that doesn't mean it's going to do that for everyone else. To each his own so they say. But yes I absolutely love her curls!

Pamela: Oh my this woman's hair is beautiful!

Q U E E N S A N I T Y👑: I think the reason a lot of beauticians say don’t use coconut oil is because it’s 4 on the comedogenic scale. Meaning that it’s high in clogging your pores. HOWEVER, coconut oil has amazing properties and if you use only a certain percentage in your products, it work’s amazing. And it also depends on your hair type. For example, I sell Chebe oil personal and wholesale value and I use a small amount of coconut oil in my products for the properties, not to necessarily moisturize. My Etsy shop is a six figure shop with amazing five star reviews because it works for all hair types and it doesn’t clog my customers pores. I agree with a lot of people on the post. We need to get out of the habit of just saying stop using certain stuff on natural hair. It’s not a one size fit all. The only thing that we all should be agreeing on is, STOP PERMING YOUR HAIR!!!!❤❤❤❤ Wonderful Video Love

Da Rose 'Ohana: I am Polynesian and Polynesians have used coconut oil for their hair and skin moisturizer before all these new hair products came out. My hair is thick and strong. I wash, put coconut oil on, comb and done - I don’t blow dry.

The "Wright" Way: For coconut oil to be an issue, her hair looks strong before and after. Jmo

Brooke Write: Agreed..it dries out my hair. I stopped using it years ago!

*sukuna-*: I am Indian and i love coconut oil, it makes my hair strong and healthy.. getting head massage with coconut oil by my mother is therapeutic ❤️❤️

Godd'iss Love Tarot: My hair LOVES Coconut Oil. Everyone's hair is different.

Berecia Todman: I'm from the Caribbean, and coconut oil is what we use growing up. The problem is so many companies are making it and adding stuff to it. For us in the Caribbean, our mothers and grandmothers made it from scratch, which is a process it goes through. It cleans your scalp it was also used on a baby's scalp if their scalp become dry.

👑 Malakah Ahlivetah Israel👑: Coconut oil is good for hair growth. My hair flourishes with it. I moisturize my hair and seal with coconut oil and retained my length..same on my childrens hair and our hair is long. No oil moisturizes your hair. The purpose for oil is not meant for moisturizing. It is to be put on the scalp and to be used as a sealant on your hair after you spray water, use an actual moisturizer and then an oil to seal the oil in. Moisturizing has to come from water or a product that is water based along with other ingredients such as aloe vera juice, vegetable glycerin which help to retain mositure in hair...do more research and use what work for YOU.

Dorothy McDougall: I went to a salon (curl sanctuary FL) and they destroyed my long hair. They cut it wrong and fried it with color. Now it’s short n fried can’t do anything with it.

Shanice Amunet Matoaka: Moisture: meaning containing water molecules Oils: depending…are just sealants but can be moisture additive. Moisturizer: adding moisture to hair. Some oils and butters are capable of such because of the water molecules in the origin of the fruit, vegetable, or plant it came from. Then there is also the extraction process that also factors in. In short we are all correct in some way. ❤ We just need a new verbiage to clarify the understanding of a specific product.

Elaine's Ayurvedic Naturals: The problem isn’t oil. The problem is people don’t know HOW to use the oils that they’re using. You should NEVER apply any products to your curly hair while it’s dry and I see people doing this all the time on social media. Natural Hair products should be applied to WET hair only. They are to seal in moisture to hair that’s already wet. Also, there are oils that can penetrate the cortex of the hair to help moisturize. Amla oil, & babassu oil are two that I use. People are uneducated about the different types oils that are out here and how to use them.

Iris Wilson: Speaking for yourself and some others, but Coconut oil works miracles on my hair.

Anita Abrego: Love it. I need my hair trimmed and defined like that.

J T: I’m using “ the products I use to define curls” ‍♀️ ok but can u SHARE?!?

Lilies Of the Field: The only thing I have find to help my hair and scalp is coconut oil, I use it as a mask and after I wash it out my hair is incredibly soft and "hydrated"

Mashelly: While I do agree some oils can be heavier and sit on the hair…i’m sure there’s still benefits. Also this is wat clarifying shampoos are for to remove dirt, oils n buildup

Sarai the Lioness: I wanted to know what she used to define the curls .. I hate when hairstylists try to keep healthy hair secrets like it’s gonna take money away from them like no help a sister out!!

Free Your Mind Audio: I stopped using oils and butters on my 4c hair and went from low porosity hair to high. My hair holds water now and is very hydrated.

Ali in Wonderland: My hair absolutely hates coconut and/or Shea anything. Avocado works wonders for me

Ghost Cat: Man, curly hair is so pretty! Watching the process of defining curls and seeing how curly hair can do so many things is so cool!

Lady Midnight: Love your videos, I have afro hair so your videos really do help. What are the products you use?

keysha: Beautiful! This is very knowledgeable. Kudos to the stylist

Rochelle Hultsman: Her hair is so stunning, now can we all take a moment to appreciate how her smile glows radiance in the after photo.

T Varnado: Concerned that the client's hair was blow dried in order to trim....only to wet hair again to help define curls. My hair is always cut in its curly state...comes out great and I really appreciate the lack of heat and tension.

Mindyo Bizness: Well I use coconut oil with the treseme Conditioner or Garnier conditioners n it works just fine. It never harm my hair in any way

Esme Stephens: Oils don’t moisturize they seal. Her hair is gorgeous and healthy, so if oils are a part of her regimen they’re clearly working for her. Definition is not the epitome of hair health, it’s a styling option. Just like any style you must adjust your products accordingly, not throw the sink out with the dishwater.

Christine Sommers: A lot of people don’t know how to use coconut oil on there hair properly & thats what causes problems. I’ve been using CO on my hair for over 2 yrs & I have natural curly hair.

Melissa Baloyi: I have been using coconut oil for the last 3 years and my hair loves it. It's the only oil that doesn't wear down my hair Plus you moisture your hair with water not oils so yeahh I think the natural hair community needs to stop telling people what products not use

Candace Sanders: I cannot stand when hair stylist are so secretive… LIKE WHY DONT YOU WANT TO HELP ANOTHER WOMAN OF COLOR LEARN AND USE THE RIGHT THINGS FOR OUR HAIR

She_encourage: Coconut oil is excellent for hair when used correctly!

Melissa Brooks: looks real cute on her. You can tell she feels cute and is happy with the results. Nothing like a bust down trip to your stylist

Chile of God: I'm black and coconut oil works wonderful in my hair

Tracey Bonds: I use coconut oil and my hair has not grown much. But over the weekend I decided to use a mayo, deep conditioning with plastic cap. My hair is beyond soft and easy to maintain

BlackPanda: Coconut oil is a saturated fat, which means its hard at room temp or below. So it makes sense that its not a moisturizer, nor good for fine hair strands. A thin amount is optimal for sealing if you want. Its simply a matter of using it properly.

_AirOnTheAir_: Since we’re in the spirit of education… electric trimmers are not the best utensil to use for trims. Such can cause further splitting. I suggest sharp hair SHEARS!

Peggy Balagia: Things like coconut oil, mayonnaise, avocado, and other foods that people put in their hair doesn't work because the molecules are too big to penetrate the cuticle. It just lays on the top of the hair shaft and builds up grease, oil, dirt and sweat (and stink)

E. G.: Absolutely beautiful! Her hair looks so amazing. You did that!

TyLynn: I feel like it's not fair to say not to use it. Only because everyone's hair reacts to product/oil differently. My brothers hair reacts amazing to coconut oil. Shines his hair and softens/moisturizes. While it just sits on top of mine doing absolutely nothing. Seems like it may depend on hair porosity.

Linda Taylor: Loves how the curls came out it’s just beautiful

Sandy Alleyne: Coconut oil works well for the scalp as well as castor oil.

S.v.k Bros: Coconut oil is used in many Asian countries. In their cooking, as a moisturizer and as a hair oil. But each person's skin or hair react differently to coconut oil or moisturizer.

Debra bosslady $: Okay What's the best moisturizer to use if you have very very coarse hair?

Sondra Brito: Videos like this almost make me wish I didn't have locs! Her curls are poppin!

Latrice Renée: My hair LOVES coconut oil. I doesn't moisturize but it does seal the moisture in. My hair is actually flourishing ✨️

devilmecare: If you want information you have to follow her on Facebook. Read the description.

Carat^^: As an Indian, I looovvvee coconut oil, it might be different for others but it makes my hair sooo strong and healthy!

Raven M: The end results were beautiful! What products did you use?

Beth A.: Wow! You did an amazing job making her hair look gorgeous!

Véro: Coconut oil gives me awesome results. We all have different hair types and different needs :)

M Dot: I use coconut oil exclusively on my locs, and I used to use it with my loose natural hair. My hair loves it, but she's right. It isn't a moisturizer. It's a sealant. Same with almost all oils. I used to coat my hair with it after applying a leave in conditioner. Now, with locs, leave ins aren't necessary, so I coat my locs with it after a light spritz of water

POA - Designs: It also has to much protein in it which will brake off your ends. Protein treatments are mostly for whites. It’s recommended that we do it only a few times a year from (if I remember correctly) over conditioning.

Jess: Coconut oil can help seal in moisture from other products made for moisturizing. However, most oils don't really penetrate the skin/hair, it just sits on top and acts as a barrier. You can use coconut oil to loosen makeup and then you have to use a good cleanser to wash off both. Or in this case put it on before you shower to detangle/ help loosen dirt and other buildup and then use a good shampoo Edit: I realize I said oil doesn't penetrate the skin/hair, but I believe certain oils do when mixed with other ingredients, ie; Vitamin E Oil (probably best one next to Castor Oil) jojoba oil, baobab oil, rose oil, tea tree oil, etc. This miiight apply to coconut oil too, but I'm not sure. I'm not an expert, just sharing a tidbit I learned

WeeeWriter: I was always told that coconut oil helps your hair. It sure didn't help mine. Thank you for confirming. I have wavy to curly hair.

Soft Sage: For the team coconut oil people out there, I just want to point out that coconut oil is comedogenic meaning it tends to clog pores. Used to use it on my face and break out often. It's also a common irritant and my sensitive skin itched a little when using it even though I drink coconut milk often. I now use grape seed oil or mango butter to seal my hair after moisturizing with produce.

Novaturient: Girl my Indian grandmother used coconut oil her entire life. Made it herself at home. She had soft lush beautiful hair right up until the day she died. My hair lovessss coconut oil. I use the organic cold press and it never fails. What works for some may not work for others. The clients natural hair is beautiful.

Cookedwithlove94_Mamifoodie: I've used it for years and my hair is healthy ‍♀️

Chan White: So pretty and healthy. I thought it was just my hair that didn't like coconut oil!it seems to dry my hair and itchy scalp.

Ms. Babidoll: Coconut oil grew my hair and I noticed less shedding while using it. And definitely moisturizes my hair.

A.: Coconut oil is a miracle for me! Ofc, the texture of your hair matters alot. Do what's best for *your* hair type!

AllThingsAsiah: As a hairstylist myself.. ive found coconut oil can be drying to natural hair. Everybody hair is different but thats my experience with my clients and myself.. i dont use it anymore

Adam Tarbox: I think you did a wondeful job. She looks great!

josie: Coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft unlike most other oils, but it depends on your porosity. It won’t work for everyone, but saying it doesn’t work for anyone is false. It might just not work for her hair, but if she’s been consistently using coconut oil while going months and months without clarifying, there’s a chance that’s the problem, not the oil itself.

Javier Duran: That’s because oil doesn’t moisturize. Oil KEEPS whatever moisture your hair/skin had previously and locks it. So if you’re applying oil to dry hair, it’s only going to sit on top. Spray water first, and then apply the oil.

martina evans: My hair DOES NOT like coconut oil. I get handsful of hair from it. I make sure to read labels on products for coconut oil in them.

Shawnetta Jones: No oil moisturizes. Moisture comes from water. Oils and creams just lock it in.

Nikki Teshawn: End results, nice! But you never said “why you shouldn’t use coconut oil!”

Kathleen Battiste: Looks so good! Healthy beautiful natural hair!

City girl: Gorgeous hair!

Brittany Dalton: Coconut oil works on my hair vs. not on my sister's hair. Which is great for woman who can't afford to really have there hair done. I love what you do and have done here.

lovey b: Someone said her hair looked normal failing to forget they didn't see her scalp or dryness of her hair like the stylist did . Between rice water and coconut oil I don't know which hype dried up the head faster. Oil is a sealant. Love how it turned out. And stop shaming folks about the product list. We look for anything to cry about sheesh.

platypus fren: Your hair is beautiful. The hair type looks so much like my 3 year old's and I do not put coconut oil in her hair ever ❤️

Elizabeth R.: I wish she would mention the product she used on the hair. The finished hair looks so good.

Lucy Rodriguez: Beautiful!!! Rock those curls girl.

Nichelle Robinson: What product did you use to moisturize her and then define her curls?

Carolynn Kingyens: I LOVE her hair and all those gorgeous curls. She looks so happy at the end. You're a fantastic stylist.

The last shall be First: I only use coconut oil as a deep conditioner, and that is it.

Nikki N.: Coconut oil work beautifully on my daughter's hair!! Maybe you should say some people.

China White: Instead of saying that coconut oil doesn't work, it would be better to say it doesn't work for everyone. I can use coconut oil on my hair because my hair absorbs it well, but for some of my clients, it doesn't moisturize , it'll just sit on the surface. Others can use Shea butter, while Shea butter would be too heavy for others. It's all in learning the client's hair. I don't use oils in the summer, only fall and winter while I wear my protective styles, otherwise it's wash and condition and define with light products. I do love how her curls came out at the end

Michelle Coleman: Her hair looks amazing.

Phoenix Rose: What oils do you recommend? My sister has 4C hair and we know nothing of what to do with it.

Let Me Think About It: Her hair looked absolutely gorgeous when you finished your work. This is how it’s done

Jc J: this is how my wash & go’s come out and people have told me it looks like a wig! I think because it looks soo good and everyone can’t achieve the look! I’m loving it

Tamara Rodney: So happy to see this short. Coconut oil had never worked for me, even on my skin. I think continuing this conversation about the failure of coconut oil as a moisturizer for natural hair, you'd get lots of views.
