Oh, my god, i'm so glad i was recording for that. That was the most beautiful thing. I'Ve ever done, hello, everyone and welcome back to the fit curls. My name is angela. I am a fitness, professional and a curly hair enthusiast and i use this channel to teach you how to keep your curls in shape, so don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell. Next to that, so you don't miss a single thing. Today we are talking all about customized hair products. You guys know in the past i have been a huge fan of customized, shampoo and conditioner, and today i had the opportunity to try a different brand than i had used before. I want to thank formulae for partnering with me for this video, so i can talk to you all about my honest opinions on formulates customized, shampoo and conditioner good, the bad and whether it's worth your money. So, if you're excited for this go ahead and hit it with a thumbs up and without further ado, let's dive in, i feel like customizing hair products is all the rage now in the beauty sphere, and i am super here for it. But how does it work? Well, with formulate you start out by answering a simple, yet very thorough questionnaire, formulate takes into account not only your hair's texture, porosity, but the kind of damage you may have done to it. The environment. You live in all the time whether or not you deal with pollution or hard water, whether your hair is color treated as well as your personal preferences in terms of the types of ingredients that are put in your formula, such as vegan cruelty, free and whether or Not you have any allergies to certain ingredients, so they can make sure that your formula is safe for you all. Their formulas are naturally dye free. But if you're a blonde, you have the option of adding a little bit of purple to your shampoo as a debrassing treatment. You also get to select up to five goals for your hair, including adding shine growing it long manageability, curl definition, and so many more and once you've done that your case gets passed on to a cosmetic chemist. Your chemist, then, takes all of your concerns goals and needs into consideration before they mix up your initial formula and send it out to you after you've received your initial shipment. You have the opportunity to test out the products and then send some feedback to your chemist about what's working and what isn't so that way, they can continue to tweak your formula as time goes on, so that all of your hair and scallops needs are met. Then your formulas arrive to you in bottles that look like this they're color-coded, which i think is super handy. The black is shampoo. The white is conditioner. That way, you never have to wonder whether you reach for the right bottle in the shower. There'S no reading required. They come with both caps and pumps. So that way, if you need to take the bottles with you, when you travel, you can put the caps back on and the pumps are super handy for using in the shower. I weirdly really love how the bottles are shaped, because it's a lot easier to grip them when your hands are wet or slippery, while you're in the shower. I think that was a really smart design and having them in opaque packaging like this actually helps to extend the shelf life of the product, specifically, if there's any vitamin c, which is a water-soluble vitamin and denatures very easily when exposed to sunlight or excessive heat. So i'm a big fan of the way that the formulas are packaged now beyond the user experience of the packaging. Let'S talk about how my formulas worked for my hair. I'Ve been using these products exclusively for about the last three weeks or so so, let's head to the shower, and i will show you what my experience was like using them all right time to give these a try. First up, as always, is shampoo. Now the top five goals i listed were improved scalp health, thermal protection, volumize manageability and strengthen, and, as you can see, i also added the optional purple dye to help debrass. My blonde highlights the shampoo comes out pretty opaque, which generally indicates a more moisturizing rather than clarifying cleanse, which is great for an everyday or more regularly used shampoo, it lathers quite well, even when applied to a pretty dirty scalp, which is a quality i really enjoy. Lather free cleansers are just not my jam. I can never tell if i got it evenly distributed. This lather doesn't feel overly soapy or stripping either, but it does seem to do a good job of hurting. My scalp with build up and i've noticed less pain and tightness in my scalp between washes after a thorough rinse, it's time for conditioner now i did not opt for a silicone free formula, as i find my high porosity hair often does really well with silicones. This formulas, texture, is creamy without being solid or stodgy, definitely a daily conditioner rather than a mask. It also includes oils that are high in amino acids like pumpkin seed and avocado oil, but no added amino acids or hydrolyzed proteins. Normally, i prefer a higher added protein content because it helps shore up my hair structure, but i was obviously game to try anything. My chemist thought would help for a first attempt this formula isn't too bad, but here's the thing the conditioner feels silky in my hands, but to be brutally honest, a little doesn't go particularly far. My fine hair is a solid grade 4 on the porosity scale, which means it's extremely prone to tangles, thanks to its open cuticle, and it needs a ton of moisture to stay healthy. I frequently found myself adding more conditioner to the least manageable sections of my hair. Just to be able to effectively detangle and even that felt like it disappeared into my hair. More than i expected, i usually leave it in my hair for eight to ten minutes and i started squishing to condition scrunching in palm fulls of water instead of outright rinsing to retain as much hydration as possible. Even so, my hair sometimes felt dehydrated immediately after conditioning, which is not great in those cases. I did a quick, deep conditioner. This one by eva nyc is my current fave for about two minutes to fix the issue. Now, since then, because of the issues i was having with my hair's manageability after getting out of the shower and even having it feel dehydrated before i ever left the shower at all, i did contact the formulate team and let me tell you they got back to Me right away we're talking half an hour generally. You want to allow about 48 hours or two business days, just to make sure that they can see your request and process it correctly. But i was blown away by how quickly my request was responded to and they recommended something that should have been a no-brainer for me and for some reason, had completely slipped my mind using more conditioner. Why didn't i think of that? So today i jumped into the shower. I did a double shampoo just because it had been about five days since my last wash and i wanted to make sure i removed any and all build up which felt fabulous. And then i went in with about double the amount of conditioner than i had the time before, and let me tell you that made all the difference now. I will be interested to see if, in the future we can slightly tweak my formula just to achieve even more manageability and lasting hydration for my hair, but all things considered, i felt like every strand was coated appropriately. My hair feels light, but appropriately hydrated, there's no buildup whatsoever and i'm honestly really happy with how it's feeling, so it definitely can take some fiddling around before you get fully used to how to use customized products, but also it's worth reaching out to the team. If something feels a little bit off to you, so now, let's get down to the nitty gritty. What did i really think of my personalized products, the service in general, and whether or not it's actually worth your money? In the pros column? We really do have the vast majority of my experiences with the products. The shampoo is cleansing, but gentle on my scalp and relatively gentle on my very dry porous hair, the conditioner when i use enough of it coats my hair really well, it's thick without being too stodgy or heavy, and let me tell you the scent. I chose the bergen scent, which is their orange blossom. It'S a naturally derived scent and holy. Oh, does it smell like summer? It is lovely, it's not too strong. It'S not cloying at all. So, honestly, i think a lot of their natural frequencies are going to be good for people who have sensitivities to things like perfumes. I also really like how detailed their questionnaire was with other customized products that i have used before the questions really stopped after hair type and your hair goals. I love that formula takes your environment into account whether or not your hair is chemically processed, as well as trying to make sure that their products can be safe for those with allergies. I love the attention to detail in terms of the formulation and i honestly really like knowing my cosmetic chemist's name, there's something just there's just there's a lovely personability about that. The other thing that i found so unique about formulae that i'm genuinely thrilled about is that when you go on to the app you not only have the opportunity to talk to somebody on your team about tweaking your formula and give regular feedback about how your hair Goals are working, but you also get to look at. I kid you not every single ingredient in your formulation, with a description of what that ingredient is and what it does. Where has this been all my life? I am such a chemistry. Nerd, hair care is chemistry, so i've just been nerding out about it. I love that you get the opportunity to see what is in your formula and why now moving on to the cons, the biggest con, i think, of customized hair care is that your first formula might not be quite right and it can feel like a major turn Off to the products as a whole, i still think my formula could use a little bit of fixing, but i'm so impressed with the company overall that i'm really happy to stick it out and make that work. The other thing that i think is a bit of a pain is that if you buy two bottles that are the same size, you're probably gon na go through a lot more conditioner a lot faster and if you're ordering your products at the same time, it can Be really frustrating to try and time out your deliveries to make sure that you have enough shampoo and enough conditioner until your next shipment comes. I will give major props to formulate for this. You can actually mix and match the sizes of products that you get. If you barely use any shampoo, you can get as small as a four ounce bottle and if you go through metric tons of conditioner, you can buy a 14 ounce bottle. So that way you never run out of conditioner. Before you run out of shampoo, i think the mix and match strategy is brilliant, and it's something i wish companies that stocked their products on shelves would actually take into consideration. We use shampoo for our scalps and a little bit tends to go a long way, but conditioner you wind up needing to use buckets full, especially if you have thick or curly hair. So the ability to mix and match bottles is helpful, but it can be a little confusing to figure out, especially when you start out with two bottles that are the same size. I'M probably a solid two-thirds. The way through my conditioner at this point, while still having two-thirds of my shampoo left over the disparity, can be a little frustrating at least formulate, makes it easy to mix and match your sizes. Now are these products worth the price depending on the size of bottle? You get the price goes up, but based on how long the products are actually supposed to be able to last you and how frequently you wash your hair, i think it's a worthwhile investment in the health of your hair. I am pretty happy with my user experience with formulate. I love the transparency of knowing everything. That'S in my formula, i love being able to be in close communication with a real person about what's working for my hair and what isn't and there's something just so satisfying to me about, knowing that these products were made. Specifically with my hair in mind, i personally think that, even with having to get maybe a bigger bottle of conditioner it's worthwhile, i would recommend this over certain salon brands, because you know that you can actually work with somebody to make the formula work for you avoid Any ingredients that your body has issues with or your conscience has issues with and find a true solution that works for your hair, exactly as it is, and now for the fun part. Jenn Leah: I just put my 2nd order in with requests for changes! I actually specifically asked for hydrolyzed silk protein for my new formula, as well as more protein ingredients in general - mine had keratin, but that's it, and it was halfway down on ingredients. I actually found mine to be a bit TOO moisturizing, especially considering the lack of protein. I get my updated formula next week! (My goals were curl definition, deep conditioning, strengthening, manageability, and I actually forget the 5th lol)

Anna Burns: I just ordered the 4oz size to give it a try. I like how specific you can be with ingredients. I'm allergic to glycerin and chamomile, and there was a place for me to put that.

The Fit Curls: Had to show my true self in the first five seconds Let me know if y’all want an update after I receive my new formula! Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!! It’s open till June 28th!

Tomar Crauswell: Seriously considering buying some! Thank you for the information.

Curlycurl Birdy girl: Great review! Kudos for the detailed questionnaire! However, I have troubles seeing that YOUR hair, regardless of damage, would need buckets of any conditioner, customized or not. Then the conditioner is lacking something imo. I think I'll stick to my curlsmith and olaplex shampoos and conditioners where no buckets are involved!

thatkat31: I've been using Formulate for a little over a year now. When I first signed up, they were super attentive, and were super quick to ship my formulas. As time went on, things started getting slower and slower. It now takes about 3 weeks to get a refill. At first my hair loved both the shampoo and conditioner, but now my hair isn't liking the conditioner anymore - it just gets super stringy when I use it. So I just use Kinky Curly Knot Today as a rinse out instead and my hair is quite happy. With my most recent order, I was given an older shampoo formula instead of my most recent one. There was only a slight difference, but I could tell (especially since they send a very detailed ingredient list with each order). I do like how I was able to tell them what my main focus was (curl enhancement) and to avoid protein. I was also able to tell them to add more moisture in when the weather got colder. I also kept ordering the smallest sizes until I got my formula exactly the way I wanted it. As for enhancing my curls/waves, their shampoo DEFINITELY does that for me. I notice that if I clarify or use a different shampoo, it takes a few washes of using the Formulate again to get my waves back, so the formula definitely does do what it's supposed to do. I do think they've either become super super busy or perhaps focus all of their customer service on their new subscribers and aren't as responsive to their older subscribers. Either way, I do love my Formulate Shampoo and don't plan on using anything else - I just have to plan accordingly and make sure I order it about 3 weeks before I'll actually need it.

Leigh: I had a similar experience with my conditioner from Formulate. I was using so much it just felt wasteful. I tried Strands too, and I actually prefer that.

H: I started using formulate 6 weeks ago. I had a problem with my hair still feeling like straw. I shared with them my frustration. I tried using more conditioner and it did not work, so they tweeked it and sent me a free shampoo and conditioner to try to see if it would work. Oh my. They hit the nail on the head. My hair is perfect and I was so impressed that they sent me a free 4 oz set and I don't have to use a ton of conditioner. I give them 5 stars. Their communication is incredible. I have been taking with them them for 3 weeks and they changed my formula and it works great. So happy, and I recommend them highly. Work with them. They listen. I have well water and they asked me all of the details of where I live and what kind of water we have.

Whitney Buckner: I did not have as positive of an experience with Formulate as you did. My shampoo was way too stripping, the conditioner way over moisturized my hair, and when I reached out to the chemist, it took forever to get a response. When they offered to send a new formula free of charge, I never received it. I have found both Prose and Stands custom products to be way more my jam. Strands is neat because you send in a sample of your hair and they microscopically analyze it and create a formula based on what they find. It was cool to see where I was at in regards to my hair’s health.

Jenn Leah: I picked their citrus/orange scent - with the option of extra fragrance and it's DIVINE

Jenn Leah: I'm hoping they come out with leave in next!

What Wendy Likes: Thanks for the detailed review! Are you still using Function of Beauty? Wondering which one you prefer.

Sara J Shireman: Your videos are so helpful. Thank you!

Dee Silver: I can’t put my finger on it but it makes my hair look stringy when I use it more than once a week. I sent them an email to try to change the formula and they weren’t really responsive. So I cancelled. It didn’t work for me unfortunately. I really wanted to love this.

April Carroll: I tried Formulate. The condition they sent was fine (nothing better than others I've used, though). I told them that I had a very sensitive scalp and the shampoo was unusable. My scalp itched so badly after the was that I had to rewash. When I told them that I could not use it, they told me that they would offer me another formula for half price. I was disappointed in this customer service. I didn't want to spend more money (even at half price) when I'd already spent good money on something I literally could not use.

Dina Jones: I have tried Function of Beauty. Actually like it, but forgot to ask for silicone free and like so many new to curls, we’re made so terrified of them!! So now I’m all afraid to use it again. How dumb is that? LOL!

Floridameerkat93: How can you tell if your hair feels dehydrated?

Anna Burns: thanks for sharing the burp! Funny girl
