How To Wash And Style Naturally Wavy/Curly Hair

Once again, I’ve been long overdue to share my updated wavy/curly hair tutorial which includes some of my favorite products! That said, you do NOT need to use the same products or same amount of product. I believe learning proper application technique should be your main focus if you’re just starting out.

Following the steps and application technique are mainly what I wanted to highlight for this 2b/2c hair styling routine. This simple washday routine for wavy/curly hair can be as involved or relaxed as you choose. In this tutorial I show everything from how I apply products, how much I apply, how to plop and how to micro-plop. I also show the many diffusing techniques for wavy/curly hair and some tricks I use to help speed up the process. This wavy curly washday routine is my go-to and takes under an hour in total.

Hello, everyone welcome back to my channel if you're new here my name is ali or weeby curly ally, i'm a healthy hair enthusiast. Just here sharing my tips and tricks on how to help you love your hair, as it is naturally, and today, once again, we are doing an updated wash day tutorial. I feel like i just uploaded this video, but i realize it's been about eight nine. Maybe ten months since i uploaded that last video and i've made some modifications since then, so today, i'm going to quickly cover everything from beginning to dry, which is where we're at today. These are my results from this wash day, so i'm not going to make this a long drawn out intro. I realize you guys want to get right to the point so without further ado, let's just jump right into it all right. Let'S start with shampoo. This is the love your curls lost brands step one of their three-step system. Their shampoo is just a little bit over a quarter. Size amount really work it in my scalp to get to lather it's kind of hard to see in this video, but it does lather, and then i rinse that out. The next step is to condition this is one of my favorite conditioners, because it has an incredible amount of slips. So it's really easy to work through and get out the tangles. You can see i'm just kind of distributing it in larger sections. Before i start to work it into smaller sections, by doing this, it makes it quite a bit easier to detangle, and it also ensures that each and every one of those strands is fully coated with product. Now i'm going to clip it up on the back of my head, let it sit for a few minutes and then i'm going to rinse it out all right in with the avocado and rose oil clementine cream. One of my all-time favorite products i use about a dime size emulsified in my hands, just to show you how concentrated this product is. You don't need a ton of it for all of my hair, i used just a dime size. Now, i'm going to start raking. It in lifting my hair up and off of my scalp just to get it distributed, but here's where it gets interesting, i like to flip upside down. At this point, i really prefer to upside down style, so i'm going to use my denman brush to help move. My hair forward and then my fingers to help lift my hair up and away from my scalp. We don't want anything sticking in the back and creating that messy section. So i do this as a preventative. Now what i just showed you was the eco slate orange marmalade flax seed gel. I use a little bit over a ping pong ball size amount and i rake that in. I really want to saturate each and every one of my strands with this product. So there's no weird dry sections that i might have missed now, i'm going to go back in with that denman brush and fully distribute it with the brush, but also using this to help form. Curl clumps give your hair a good shake to help, encourage those curl clumps to form and come back together, but i'm going to do one last step here. Don'T skip this step, it seems a little bit goofy, but bend all the way forward and give your hair a good shake. I'M really trying to make sure that my hair is released from the back of my scalp and we don't dry again with that really weird wonky section that many of us encounter when we upside down style. It'S really hard to see back there when you're styling your hair, so making sure that you bend all the way forward to release that hair from your scalp will make such a difference in the way that it dries. If that's not enough, try rotating your head from side to side, giving it a shake to make sure it's all lifted off of your scalp i'll. Show you how to help those clumps reform once we get to the next step, but, as you can see here, i'm just scrunching the product in my hair, starting to form those waves and curls. Now this is the part i was just referring to when your hair starts to separate and you don't feel like your clumps are staying intact, add more water, it seems really goofy and very simple, but you know a lot of the times. Sometimes it's just a simple step like that to make such a difference all right, so i just went in again with another ping. Pong ball size, amount of gel and i'm doing kind of this last bit of coding as insurance before i go into micro popping my hair, i'm really squeezing this in until i form the clumps and feel it as saturated as it needs to be all right now. It'S time to plop them fresh out of the shower exactly where we had left off, and i am slowly placing my hair into the top portion of my lost brands. Love your curls hair t-shirt. Towel. You don't need to use this specifically, you can find any standard, t-shirt, towel or cotton t-shirt or use a microfiber towel, but this is how i put this one on pretty simple, just gently place, my hair into the top twist it closed and let it sit i'm Going to keep this on for about 10 to 15 minutes or as long as it takes for me to get dressed and put on my makeup, which i've already done, but for demonstration purposes now we're going to take it off after that. Time has lapsed and i'm going to micro plop, so i'm going to take that towel or you can grab a new one if you want one that's dry and i'm going to micro plop, which just means squishing out that excess water from my hair, as you can See i do this forward side to side really to make sure that i'm releasing that hair from my scalp and we're not going to have any weird sections that dry flat or sticking against your head to once again. Not have that weird messy back section that many of us have issues with all right. So now we're going to go in with my axmondo wavetech wave foam. You can also use a mousse. It'S typically encouraged to use your hardest hold styler last, but i do prefer to finish with the mousse, as it gives me results that i absolutely love. The wetness from the foam also encourages my curl clumps to form back together after i've done all that squishing with the towel, both in plopping and micro plopping. So here i'm just going to glaze my hair with the foam and squish it in i'm, going to spend a bit of time making sure that all of that product that you see slipping through my fingers does get back into my hair. I'M going to do this forward, i'm going to do this from side to side as well again trying to keep that hair released from my scalp and in a position where it wants to fall. Naturally, all right on to this last round of micro plopping. I'M really just doing this to squeeze out any extra bit of water. That is sitting in my hair before i move into the diffusing process. But you don't have to diffuse, you can absolutely air dry, just removing that extra bit of water and i'm squeezing all the way up to my root does help speed that up quite a bit. The last thing i'm going to do to help speed up my dry time is hit it with a little bit of the pantene air spray. This is a non-alcohol air spray. You don't have to do this, but this is something that has helped speed up my dry time and helped me maintain definition while i dry, so i'm going to start out with the method of hover diffusing. I am using the highest speed setting of three and the second highest heat setting of two and consistently moving this around my scalp, i'm trying to dry my roots first so as to create more volume, but also it's good for scalp health. The next thing i'm going to do is reduce it down to one heat setting in one speed, setting and gently move this in and out of my hair. This is also known as pixie diffusing. Additionally, i might start out my drying process by hammock diffusing. I have an entire separate video that covers that that really helps with wonky ends and for those who have long hair, and you want to lift some of that weight off to help dry faster and, despite being only about 15 minutes, i've still grown rather impatient and Stopped for a snack, so i am doing the pinch test here to ensure that my hair is completely dry by using my fingers to pinch the strands and make sure that there's no moisture hiding in there anywhere i'm going to go in with a few drops of The lost brands elixir oil emulsify that in my hands and then i'm going to carefully glaze this over my hair and begin scrunching as you'll see i scrunch forward. I scrunch side to side and i'm going to take that excess oil. That'S sitting on my hands and give my hair a good ruffle right at the root. This is going to help fluff it up and give me that extra bit of lift and volume that i absolutely love for the results. On my wash days, then gently move your hair around until it's found its part and let it settle for a few minutes. All right. You guys that's it. These are the results. I'M gon na do a quick, 360 curl wavy curly tour, so you can get a sense for the wash day and how it turned out. It seems my hair wants to part on this side today, so we're gon na go with it all right, you guys! That'S it for me, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them below. If you can please like and subscribe, and let me know what you'd like to see next i'll continue bringing y'all the videos you love the most. Alright, thanks guys,

Syl B: Beautiful!! Your hair looks so defined and voluminous at the same time!! I only have wavy hair, but mine looks so much wavier when wet and loses all that shape when drying, unlike yours. which just keeps looking better and better as the process goes on!

Rebecca11287: I tried this routine and it is 100% a game changer. Great volume and the best definition from root to bottom and all around. Only con is that, for me at least, even with plopping and micro plopping my hair holds a lot of water. It takes forever to diffuse.

Natalie White: I decided to save my natural curls about 4 years ago because I thought "it will save me so much time!" I'm STILL trying to figure mine out but I'm excited to try this routine and watch more of your videos as we have a very similar curl!

Molly Benincasa: Love this! I never thought that I could love my hair until I started using your routines! Thank you! Please keep making videos!

Amy Betts: Beautiful ❤️ I sure hope I can make mine look half that good. Thank you for the tips and tutorial!

Through faith and grace: Wow! So pretty! I can’t believe you can get curls like that without using a curling iron. Lol my hair is naturally curly and I am going to start this method! I’m excited. You are gorgeous

gymkat247: I found you on Instagram and followed the link to this video. I followed this routine after cutting my hair. I'm usually a style standing up lady myself, but not anymore! I paused the video so I could follow along and my results are amazing. I have volume at the nape of my neck! That's never happened to me before! My left side tends not to want to be as curly as the right, but they are pretty similar now. I also learned mousse might be a favorite of my hair. I'll have to try again next wash day! Thank you for sharing your updated routine!

Rachel Swenson: Ali, your hair is so beautiful! Thanks for sharing your routine. I’ve learned so much of my healthy/wavy routine from your videos. You are so cute and straight forward and easy to follow! PS I have learned my hair doesn’t like it when I microplop (or maybe I’m just doing it wrong?) so I just plop instead, and it takes forever to diffuse my hair. I’ll keep trying/experimenting though!

sherilynschneider: Hi Ali - So excited to see ur updated routine. You curl pattern is very similar to mine. I am so scared to use curl cream but I just may have to try, with much less of course since my hair is much shorter. Thanks for the video!

Amarie: First time watching a video from you and wow I am already obsessed!!! Definitely trying this method my next wash day !!

Andrea Logan: Ooh yay thanks for the update! Looks a little simpler than some past routines (or maybe I’m just getting the hang of styling my curls!)

Cheryl: So glad to have found you! refreshing to see new ideas & techniques! Your hair is absolutely gorgeous.... Look forward to watching your future videos!

Rowan Thomas: Your hair looks gorgeous!! Love your curls!❤️

Trudie Gauerke: I would never ever spend that much time or money on my hair but kudos to you cause yours looks AMAZING

Erica: So beautiful! Love these tips! I have to wear my hair in a bun for work everyday and it destroys my curls. Your hair is serious goals. One question…if you have time…when you get a hair cut what do you ask for? Is your hair all one length, even around the frame of your face?

M Bennett: Ah man, your videos have been a game changer! Thank you! Any chance you’d provide tips for how to travel with wavy curly hair for extended periods (ie: more than a long weekend)? I’m thinking specifically about products and trying to keep them to travel/carry-on size (and still accommodate skin care products).

Crystal Stice: This is sooo much closer to what my hair is. I’ve been trying to find a good routine but my hair just isn’t SUPER curly

cait miller: You have the most gorgeous hair I've ever seen! Thanks for the routine ❤

Elisabete Jardim: What a beautiful hair! Incredibly gorgeous!

Susie Amundsen: Beautiful hair! Did you do any curl training before getting to this routine?

surrendertoflow fo'reals: Yes! Orange Marmalade changed my hair life! It’s the only thing I use now and it works so well for me and is the easiest thing in the world to refresh. I’m not even tempted to look for anything else! (Saying a lot).

Colleen Cathrae: Love your hair, as always

Croi: Oh wow..your curls are gorgeous!! Thank you for this video .. my denman brush arrives today ..and can't wait to try it on my long hair!!!!

Lisee Renee: Have you ever tried an old fashioned hooded dryer? I would love to see what kind of results you get and any tips you could give with that. I inherited one from my grandmother-in-law, and one advantage is the lack of touching the hair while you sit under it and very little air disturbance.

Codi: I cannot wait to try this!

Lauren Moreau: I love your videos- I would love to see something on your hair transition- my hair currently is more like your early pictures and it would be helpful to get more insight on how long it took you to kind of get the beautiful and bouncy definition that you have. If you ever still use a curling wand or style it differently, if that delayed the results, etc.

Lauren Baxter: I have been waiting for this thank you, I have learnt so much just from, your you tube and Instagram pages!! I now love my hair more than ever. Quick question, do you no longer use the bowl method? I always get confused at which point it should be included

Rachael Shaabani: Your hair looks amazing!! The cream and gel you use are really clean which I love. Do you happen to know of a good foam/mousse that is clean? Thanks!

Amber Noland: Thank you so much for saying drying your roots is good for scalp health!!! Too many people are afraid of a hair dryer!

Jenny Wallace: I got many tips thanks to this video! One question: do you not rinse out the conditioner before you go in with gel? I rinse out for less than 30 secs, but should I be leaving it all in? Thanks!!

Know1: For the LUS shampoo and conditioner, do you use the one for wavy hair or curly hair?

Nicole Halper: Gorgeous ! I love the color as well ! How did you achieve it ?

Guilherme Barcelar: Lovedd it. Your video is so detailed. Thank you. And yes...a long hair boy watching your tutorial. Hauaha. My hair looks like yours. It's a little thicker and curlier, but I'll try your techniques.

Esmée Z: Hi Ali! Thank you for posting the video, you are such a beauty with amazing hair! I saw you using the Pantene Airspray before, but for some reason it seems out of stock éverytime I look it up on Amazon. Any ideas on a replacing one that is without alcohol / sulfates / silicons? Or another place where I can buy it? Because I saw you using it to get your hair dry sooner as well, so for me it’d be a win win. Thank you for your reply!

Jenessa Doherty: What do you do in-between wash days to ensure that sleep and other activities don't create extra static/frizziness in your hair?

Celeste Ortins: beautiful :). I love the OM it always give me my best results. I have never tried glazing a foam after. I might give it a try. thanks

Brittany Soos: I just ordered every product you suggested above! I can't wait to try!

Teresa Rufener: I use a few LUS products. I have very thick coarse hair which is a lot shorter than yours. I can't spend that much time on my hair, but you did a great job on this video. I'm glad you have found what works for you!!!

Angelica Dorado: Gorgeous!!

Trina Beller: How often do you wash your hair and how does your hair look like on the second day?

laurenhammond-healthcoach: I just discovered your channel! I’m trying to take better care of my wavy curls. Do you have a product list or suggestions of products with steps? Thanks!!!

Ayesha: i'm gonna give this a try since i have yet to find a routine i really like

Rhonda Miller: Your hair is stunning!!!

haiiitaliaaa: how long do you go between washes? I'm trying to wash fewer times a week.

Passport Passenger: The Loveurself brand has the 3 step bundles of Shampoo/Conditioner and then an all in one product. Within your routine which product could be subbed for the all in one? I can't tell if it would replace the curl cream, gel, foam, or none at all

Ben Clifford: (Not me. Lol. Using my husbands account here.) Your hair is so beautiful! I've just started my curly girl journey and one of the things I was thinking while I was watching your video is that at this point in my journey I don't think some of these techniques would work for me. One of the first problems I'm trying to tackle is moisturizing and balancing the protein in my hair. Because even after I use deep conditioner (both with and without protien) my hair is way to velcro-y to achieve that slick affect that you get when you are putting your products in. I keep trying the upside down method to get more natural clump formations in my hair but what ends up happening is that it just gets a lot of wet frizz, and it's all tangled up when I flip my head back over. And yes, I make sure my hair is very, very wet, and I've also tried an apple cider vinegar rinse. They help but don't eliminate the problem completely. No matter what I've tried so far, I've had to detangle my hair at every step during the wash, condition, and styling process. So I think for now I have to settle for styling my hair right side up so that I don't end up with a tangled mess before I can finish. It's a bummer because I feel like I'm sacrificing a lot of volume that way. But if I can figure out how to get my hair to have that slick texture you've got I'm going to come back and try this technique.

S T: Wow gorgeous

MaryAnn Rossetti: Wow love your curls.Wish my hair was like that it is just wavy. I am amazed because when you brushed your hair there was no curl then you put lots of product in your hair did all that stuff and you end up having all theses beautiful curls. Could you please do my hair for me? Also would like to see you do a video like this without diffusing. Thanks for sharing.

Amy Heilman: Love this and want to try. Are these products high protein? I feel I could use a protein boost because my curls go flat an hour after washing.

Monica Tequia: How often do you wash your hair? When I used to use moose, I hated the way it felt the next day, so I was washing it every day.

Elisa Madeddu: Does anyone know a mousse which doesn't dry your hair out?

Fiona Hughes: You are gorgeous and so is your hair. It is really beautiful. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how did you manage to keep your make-up on when showering your hair? X

Bray Office Manager: Hi Ali!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know what colors you have in your hair in this video! Did you do it yourself? I really like and want

Felicia Hilaski: Your hair is the most beautiful I’ve seen in these videos

Michelle Bourey: Forever obsessed with your hair.

stuffstuffstuffyay: Lovely, similar routine to mine. Do you think the Dyson is worth it?

Kelly Dadema: Do you use some kind heat protection product?

Miriam Garcia: Your results look amazing. May I ask where do you get your hair cut?

Gina SV: Every routine that I see use so much Products, but well it looks it’s worth it.Thanks!

Brielle Cosgrove: Tried it and I'm getting better coils but it did ultimately end up pretty stringy instead of fluffy

Taylor Nicole: How do you prevent crunchy curls even after drying? Did I use too much gel?

Bee Mo: Hey Ali, the elixer oil isn't available it seems... Do you have another suggestion for this step?

Elisa H: Hi, such a beautiful hair . The color is purple and blond on the ends? Have you done yourself? I want that color on mine, please

with f🥀🖤: This is my channel for curly hair هذه قناتي للشعر الكيرلي

The Ghost: My hair isn't as curly as yours. I have wavy hair but it's more concentrated at the ends. My hair is thin and when I plop the top of my hair is still flat but my ends will be wavy.

my name: After 3:27, do you wash it all off or leave the products in ur hair? Sorry im new to this

Ferberge Angst: Hey Quick question, so you didnt wash the conditioner right?

Kaejol: you're so stunning!

Tammy Schlievert: Any idea where to get that Pantene airspray? I can't find it anywhere, in stores or online. :(

Hellomynameis: I swear my hair almost looks like yours when wet but during the drying process it loses all its wave pattern, goes flat and some parts are even almost straight :/ Will try this routine tmrw ❤

Monique Presutti: Do any of you stylers contain protein?

Anastasia 25: I am a bit confused. Before plopping, did you wash you hair or you left the products on? Cause of you didn't wash you hair, won't become oily?

Kaitlyn Wonders: I’m so glad I found you!

Sarah C: Those waves are so dreamy ❤

nevila121: What colour is your hair? Love it

Dearne Maree: Can you do a video on the inbetween days?

Debra Ray: Binge watching your videos! Love them all! But I can’t find one on how you get your hair cut. Do you have one and I’m not seeing it? I think that would really help me in my journey. Thanks!!

Rin Okumura: My hair needs this it's not as wavy as urs is but I have waves that get ratty and greasy when I use the products for straight hair I looked it up turns out I have beach wavy hair

moniquelauren99: My curls came out smaller diameter but also more stringy? I LOVE your big defined curls help please?

Grace Ahern: Do you not have to rinse the products

prerna kumari: Whenever I detangle my hair in wet I am suffering massive hair loss so please help me

jeffsycks: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Sarah-Alice: Subscribed :) where is your swimsuit from??

Rosalie mccoy: Could you give names of products please I use curly girl

Rhonda Miller: What type do u have? If u just wash your hair & let it dry, is it straight? Curious. Many Blessings to u !

Swavy Curly Courtney:

S: Lol I use like 1/8 the amount of mousse that you do maybe that’s why my hair never looks nice

Amber Burkett: What brand of blow dryer do you use???? Your hair is absolutely gorgeous

Yasmina Blue: you are beautiful

Amanda Emigh: Do you pineapple with a scarf at night?

brenda braun: Well I went ahead and looked into all the stuff you use for hair and looks all very good so I went ahead and bought it all figured if it doesn’t work like I want it to I’ll still use it as it won’t hurt my hair . Now I’m wondering if I should buy the hairdryer also ‍♀️ Thank you for sharing all this with us and the how to also .

Carrie Jussely: Wanted to follow. But. What’s happening now? This feels like a whole lot of non-posting
