#curlygirlmethod #naturallycurlyhair

For this video i'm going to walk you through the best treatments for naturally curly hair, if you're looking for a scalp treatment or strengthening treatment, bond repair treatment or just what the best oils are for, naturally curly hair, then you'll definitely want to stay tuned. For this video, if you are new to my channel, welcome, my name is gina and i make videos all about naturally curly hair. I like simplifying things for beginners, and i love looking at the science behind products and their ingredients. If you have not already seen the other videos as part of this top 10 series, i will link them down below so far. We have covered the best shampoos and clarifiers the best, deep conditioners and conditioners leave-ins and curl creams and gels, and the next video after this is going to be all about my favorite mousse products as well as hairsprays and other type of refreshing sprays. So the first product that i'm going to be talking about is from bounce curl. This is the turmeric hair detox mask, so this product is actually more of a clarifier. I probably should have included this in the top 10 shampoos video, but it's not technically a shampoo, but it does detox and clarify the scalp and the hair. It'S a very unique product in that it's like a jelly liquidy formula. So this isn't your typical deep conditioning mask it's, not your typical shampoo, so i thought for this treatment video. It would be best to include this and it's even labeled as treatment here. So this product has organic apple, cider, vinegar, aloe and charcoal to help draw out impurities. Some people say apple, cider, vinegar is clarifying some say it's not i've seen research that supports both online, but i do know that apple cider, vinegar is great at lowering the ph of the hair and making it feel softer almost like a conditioner, and i will say That, after i use this product, my hair looks amazing. It always has really great definition and shine, and it always feels very soft, so some other ingredients that this product has are green tea leaf extract chamomile. It also has turmeric root oil rosemary leaf tea tree, which is very soothing for the scalp, so you're supposed to apply this before you shampoo and condition your hair, so you would go in with this first, you can apply it to a dry, hair or wet hair. I usually apply it to wet hair when i'm in the shower. You apply it all over your scalp and through the lengths of your hair, so just completely coat your hair in this all bounce core products are around 24 and i do have a 10 off discount code that i will list for you down below. So the next couple of products are going to be bond treatments and strengthening treatments. First bond treatment is from olaplex. This is the original bond building treatment. This is olaplex number three, so it's the take-home version. If you have not already heard of this product, what have you been doing? Because this product is all over the place? It really blew up, especially in the curly hair community, a couple years ago, because it really helps to strengthen hair repair, the hairs, broken bonds, and it also really improves your curl definition and your curl pattern. So if you are transitioning away from bleach damage or even heat damage, this is going to be your best friend. I used this so much back when i was transitioning and i really think it helped tightened up my curls. I will insert some pictures here of my very first before and after when i use this product, and you can see how much it really tightened up. My curls, so olaplex claims to repair all three types of bonds in her hair that can be damaged by heat. Chemical damage, environmental damage and mechanical damage, so olaplex is going to repair your damage, no matter what type of damage that you have, so the main active ingredient in olaplex is patented. I will put it here on the screen: it's a really long, scientific name that i can't pronounce, but it's olaplex's patented original ingredient that helps repair broken bonds, so the recommended usage for this is anywhere from one to four times per month. You can't really overdo it with this product, although i wouldn't use it too much. I was using it about once a week and then i would stop for a while and then i would do another round of treatments like a year later. That'S just what worked for me, but if you wanted to use it more for just maintenance, you could use it every couple of months because it is a pretty small bottle. So you might want to use it more sparingly, but you could, in theory, use this about once a week and it's not going to harm your hair or anything, so this doesn't technically have any protein ingredients. Although the patented ingredient is strengthening and helps repair, our broken bones in our hair, but it's not your traditional hydrolyzed protein, so it's not going to cause protein overload. This does also have humectant ingredients. It has glycerin aloe and panthenol. So olaplex is a pretty small bottle. It'S about 28 and you get 3.3 ounces. They do sell a larger size of this, but it's more expensive. So after the bond treatment craze with olaplex, all these other brands started coming out with their own versions that do very similar things in just a different way. The next one that i have is from curlsmith. This is the bond curl rehab cell. I'Ve done a full video comparing this to olaplex and my results were so similar. So, if you're interested in seeing that side by side, i will link it for you down below, but this one it claims to do the same thing. It is a bond repair treatment. It'S not just a protein treatment, although this one does have protein ingredients in it. So that is the main difference, but this one also has a patent ingredient and also two other complex ingredients that are supposed to help repair the three different types of broken bonds. When i first reviewed this, i wasn't completely aware of the exact ingredients in this product that actually repaired the bonds, and i was focusing more on the protein ingredients, but curlsmith actually put out more of an explanation on their curl academy, blog and also on their instagram. That explains their different patented ingredients that are in this product that do repair broken bonds. So i will link that for you down below. If you want to read more about those. It'S very interesting, though, and it's great to know that this is not just exclusively a protein treatment, but because this product does have strong protein ingredients in it. You do have to be careful when using this, so i would recommend using this about one to three times per month. I would probably say once a month is good to avoid a protein overload and you want to make sure you are using a very moisturizing protein free, deep conditioner. Afterwards, it just depends on how damaged your hair is, though, and how often you wash your hair, but i would say once a month is a good overall schedule for using this, so i forgot to mention that both of these are applied before shampooing. So these are a pre, shampoo treatment or pre-poo treatment that you would apply to dirty hair before you wash it. This is about twenty eight dollars. I do have the ten percent off discount code as well, if you've never ordered from curlsmith, and this is your first time you can use that code. I'Ll put it for you down below, but the main difference with this compared to olaplex. Is you get eight fluid ounces? So it's a much larger bottle, it's about the same exact price, but you get more products and more uses out of this one. So the next category of treatments that i'm going to talk about are more geared towards scalp health and they're, going to help soothe irritated scalp. So if you have dandruff or any type of scalp conditions, these are going to help with that. So this product is another curlsmith one. This is the super slip, prebiotic primer, so this one's really interesting. This is part of their detox kit that i've reviewed here on my channel. I'Ve done a whole video all about how to detox your scalp. So if you have major scalp issues, i recommend checking that out, but this is a pre wash treatment. So it's a pre-poo treatment and it's a primer. So it's meant to be applied to your hair before you shampoo, you do want to apply it to wet hair. So it's a little bit different compared to like a pre-poo oil which you would apply on dry hair. So this you apply to it wet hair and you also apply it to your scalp and through your links it has a lot of slip to it. So it's great to detangle detangling before shampoo, is something i always recommend, especially if you have damaged or very tangly hair, because it can be really hard on the hair to go right in with shampoo when it's very tangly or when you have a lot of knots And a lot of damage, it helps a lot to detangle, first you'll notice that your shampoo experience is so much easier, but this has prebiotics in it, which is very interesting. So i was looking into the ingredient that is prebiotics and it's the inulin, i'm not sure. If i'm saying that right, but that ingredient is what actually has the active prebiotic, so that's going to actually help balance our skin's natural microbiome and our scalp is skin too. So if it gets in balance - or you have any type of scalp conditions, then it can really cause things like flakiness or itchiness, or even dryness, so, along with the prebiotic ingredients, this also has fermented rice, water, guarana, extract, grated, ginger, root, dragon fruit juice and torn Wild nettle, but i did notice that this product actually has the same bond repair ingredient that the bond curl, rehab self has, which i didn't realize that until reading the ingredients, but it has the fiber hands patented complex ingredients in this one. So my thinking was, they probably included that so it helps protect your hair from shampoos. So it helps give your hair that slip and that coating, so you can actually detangle, especially if you are going to be clarifying which tends to be more of a harsh shampoo. Then you would want to use something like this to just prevent your scalp from getting dried out from that. So the next product is another one. If you suffer from a dry, itchy irritated scalp - and this is from the brand derma e - you might know them as a skin care brand they're more of an affordable brand and they also have pretty natural ingredients, which is awesome, they're cruelty free. So this is the derma e scalp relief treatment. This has tea tree oil, aloe vera, and it says it's an herbal blend to soothe a dry itchy scalp. So i just started testing this and i used it today and it feels so nice and soothing on the scalp. So if your scalp is very irritated, i can see this being amazing for that mine's not. I don't usually have scalp issues, but some people get that in the winter, so i would definitely recommend trying this out. This says it has purifying tea tree oil and a cooling menthol. It says it's. A water-based scalp relief system that soothes dry, flaky and itchy scalp has moisturizing aloe in it seek help. So some of the ingredients that really help with the scalp health are the tea tree. Oil, which i've heard is pretty anti-inflammatory. It also has cooling menthol in it, but it didn't have an overwhelming cooling sensation like when i applied it. I noticed it at first a little bit, but it wasn't like overwhelming, so i don't think that would irritate your scalp. This also has aloe vera in it, which is very moisturizing and hydrating for the scalp. It also has sea, kelp and alma extracts, which i've also heard those are great for the scalp, so really great natural ingredients, and this i've really been impressed with it. So far it is a water-based serum. So it's very watery. The color is really pretty too you're supposed to shake it up, really good before you use it. It also has that dropper. So you could apply this directly to your scalp and let the water kind of just run down, or you could apply it to your fingers first and just kind of massage it in you're supposed to use this before you shampoo, or you could also use it after You wash your hair and before you style, so it can be left on the hair from what i was reading or you could use it before you shampoo. So this does not have any protein ingredients and it says that the humectant ingredients are aloe glycerin and niacinamide and derma e products are pretty affordable. So this one is around 13 and you can find it at ulta or from their website. So the next category of products are going to be oils, i'm first going to start off with my favorite pre-poo oil that i use for dry. Detangling. Y'All have heard me talk about this so much. This is the miche polish hair and scalp oil. If you've never heard of miesh, they are a brand that is just sold online from their website. I don't think they're available in stores yet, but this is a lightweight oil that contains both penetrating oils and sealing oils, and that's why i like to use it. As my prepaid oil, because it is going to soak into the hair, but it's also going to sit on the surface, so it can help protect my hair from a shampoo. So i always use this to add some slip to my hair when i'm dry detangling that just helps prevent breakage. So some of the other ingredients are sweet almond oil, olive oil, caprylic triglyceride, argan, oil, apricot kernel, oil, jojoba seed oil and vitamin e, so the jojoba seed oil is one of the most popular sealing ingredients. So it's a great sealant, so you can use this after you've already styled your hair. So if you wanted to apply a little bit of this sort of like a serum after you've already styled and when your hair is dry, you could do that. But i would only use a little bit of this and just focus it on your ends. I don't usually use oils as a finisher, because they're mainly meant to just soften and add shine, and i don't really want to soften up my gel cast. I like keeping the cast in because it helps protect my hair from frizz and from humidity, so i don't really want to break it up. So, that's why you don't usually see me finish off with a serum, but if i were to do that, i would probably go with something like this or one of the other ones. I'M going to mention here in a minute and in oils like this, there are no proteins and no humectants they're, just oils. I'Ve actually talked about this before on my instagram, but oils are actually not moisturizing and by moisturizing i mean hydrating. They just soften and improve. Like the feeling of your hair, they add that shine. They add that manageability and can protect your hair and they can seal. But oils are not going to add that hydration to your hair, like humectants, do so humectants are things like aloe, honey, panthenol, glycerin, pectin, those types of ingredients that are actually adding moisture to your hair or hydration to your hair, i should say next up is a Drugstore option this is from curls. This is from their blueberry bliss collection. This is the hair growth oil. I honestly don't think this is going to do anything really for hair growth. I don't think they should label something as hair growth. It'S more of it can support healthy hair growth, like it's gon na help protect your hair from breakage and stuff, but it's not gon na make new hair grow out of your scalp. If that makes sense, so i don't like how it's labeled that, but this is just your basic oil that is great for pre-poo treatments, or you could also use this as a finishing oil, so this also contains both sealing and penetrating oils. This does have coconut oil in it by the way, but the main ingredients are soybean oil, sunflower, seed, oil and castor oil, so those are like the top ones. So it's more of a liquidy consistency. It'S a little bit more liquidy than this one. This one's a little bit thicker both of these are very similar though, but i would probably reach for this one more and i do it just seems more higher quality oil and again this does not have any proteins and no humectants either, and it's about twelve dollars From the drugstore you can find this at target or wherever they sell curls products. I think they have them, maybe at walmart too, for being drugstore, though 12 is pretty expensive, especially when something higher quality like mich is only 15. So all right next up is an actual strengthening oil. I don't know if i've talked about this one on my channel, but i have over on instagram. This is the briogeo. Don'T despair, repair, strengthening treatment oil, so this oil is supposed to also help with bond repair. I don't personally think that an oil really is going to do much, though, for bond repair, because you'd have to use a ton of it and you're just kind of adding a little bit as a finisher to your hair. So i don't know how much it would really help with that, but you know anytime you're using an oil. It is help protecting the hair from breakage and sort of softening it. So maybe that's more of the goal, but this says it's a lightweight oil. It repairs damage seals, split ends and reinforces the hair's cuticle to protect against future breakage. So i guess that's what they're talking about how it is more of a ceiling, so it can help seal split ends. There'S nothing! You can do to completely repair split ends. You have to cut them off, but this can in theory, kind of seal them up just so they're not getting split up even further. If you were to mainly focus this on your ends, so this one has great ingredients. It has the same caprylic triglyceride that some of the other ones do so that can be very softening. It also has castor oil macadamia rose flower oil ceramides, a squalane and sweet almond oil. So this one sounds to be more on the moisturizing side compared to others. This can be used any time on dry or wet hair. It does say you can use this on wet hair, which is a little odd. You don't usually think of serums or oils, that's being used on wet hair. This does not have any protein ingredients, but it does have some humectants in it like hydrolyzed, hyaluronic acid, so no idea how they got humectants in an oil, but this one sounds to be actually moisturizing because it does have that humectant ingredient in it. So this one is probably the priciest out of the bunch. This is around a thirty dollars. All the briogeo products are all natural cruelty, free all that stuff, which is why they're on the higher end side. So next up is another derma e product. This is the bonding hair repair oil, but i did notice on the website. This name has since changed and it is now called the derma e hair repair oil, probably because of olaplex. This looks exactly like the olaplex oil that they have. The olaplex oil does have silicone, but this does not. So this is silicone. Free the derma e products again are all natural. This has chaga mushroom, jojoba and almo oils, so same oil. That is in that scalp serum that i shared from derma e. So this says it's a weightless bonding oil that strengthens and boosts shine, formulated with nourishing alma and mongongo oil to moisturize tame and protect the hair. This also has the mushroom that renews hair's color vibrancy, so that is probably the most unique claim that i've heard out of any of these treatments is. This helps with color vibrancy. So this actually says that you are supposed to shampoo and condition your hair first and then apply this to wet hair. So i have been testing this, though, on dry, hair sort of just as a finisher, because it does have that jojoba seed oil in it which helps to seal in the hair. So that's a good like serum or a sealing oil, so i've been using it as that, but now that i read it it's supposed to be used actually on wet hair, so you're supposed to apply this after you shampoo and condition to wet hair. This does not have any humectants in it and the price is about 12, so i'm super excited to share this last one, because this is in a category all of its own, and i don't think i've shared this on youtube. Yet i did a trial of it over on instagram, but this is the living proof, scalp care, revitalizing treatment. This provides thicker, fuller, looking hair from the root. This is unlike any product i've ever tried before. Like i said, i did that 90 day trial over on instagram, where i tracked my results, i did save it to my highlights. If you want to check it out - and there are before and after pictures over on my instagram that show you how this really did improve the thickness around my hairline, but basically the way that this works is. It helps strengthen your hair's follicle and makes your hair stronger to where it's not going to fall out as easily and also helps make it look thicker. So it's kind of like a protein treatment almost, but it doesn't cause protein overload, but it actually thickens your hair. So it makes your hair more coarse, like i did notice. My hair felt more coarse in these areas. So if you had very fine hair, that's very weak. This would definitely help beef up those hair strands. I don't know how to describe it, but it's a nighttime, scalp serum, so you apply this to your hair every single night. You want to be consistent with it, so i did it every single day for 90 days and tracked my progress and i didn't see any results until about the 90 day mark. I started to notice my hairline filling in right here and i used to have a pretty sparse hairline in that area, but it just looks darker and more filled in they refer to it on their instagram sort of like a fertilizer for your hair. If that makes sense, so some of the main ingredients - and this are hydrolyzed yeast protein and that's one of those thickening strengthening products - it also has jojoba esters, zinc, salts, which i did read, that that is really good for your scalp health and your follicle health. It also has caffeine and biotin, so some really great ingredients. So this product is silicone free, but it does have a wax ingredient and it has alcohol just so that it dries quick like it does dry fast. When you apply it to your hair, which i like, because i don't want to go to bed with a damp or a wet scalp, but i didn't notice the wax ingredients building up or anything, i was using this every single night. I was also using it every day during the week between my washes and i didn't notice any buildup. So i know some of you that are strict curly girl method. You might not want to use the wax ingredients, but i didn't have any issues with it and i clarify about every other week, but it was totally fine. So this is probably the priciest one out of the bunch it's 32 and you get 2.5 ounces. I noticed that i went through a bottle about every month. I think with this yeah it took about a month to go through a bottle, so keep that in mind, so that is all 10 of my favorite hair treatments. I hope you enjoyed this. It was very fun talking about some of these treatments because they're, just like added steps that you can add into your routine if you have some type of scalp issue or if you're wanting to strengthen your hair. So i'm going to summarize all of these on a chart over on my blog. A lot of you have said that the charts are extremely helpful, so i'm glad you're enjoying them because they definitely take some time to put together. But i basically list out all of these different characteristics that i mentioned for each one of these treatments, so that's it for today's video. I hope you enjoyed this. If you have not already subscribed, please be sure to do so before you go. I post every single sunday, so i hope to see you back next week. Bye everyone

Gena Marie: Do you have a favorite hair treatment? Head to the blog post to view the comparison chart/guide: https://genamarie.co/2021/05/best-curly-hair-treatments-scalp-bond-repair-hair-growth-oils/

Stormy Day: Just FYI, “hair growth oil” is a term used in hair products that are marketed toward 4A-4C type hair. It is because there is a need to use it on the scalp to encourage hair growth, 4a-4c tends to be very dry in the scalp area which inhibits hair growth, certain oils help in this area because the oils help the scalp remove the dry skin and allows smooth hair growth from the root, dry scalps clog the hair root, so certain oils aid in this process and it does work.

Cindy N: Great information! Thanks for doing all the work to put something like this together for us. I'll certainly be buying the Living Proof treatment to help with my weak/thin hair. Never heard of it before, so that's for finding a great new product for us to try!!

Tracy: All of these sound good. A few have been on my list. Especially the Curlsmith. Very innovative products. Even though most of the time I make my own Ayurvedic oil infused blends. The Camille Rose Cocoa Nibs has been a repurchase that I enjoyed.

blackeneddove: That living proof is expensive! But man I really need that. I’m going to have to pick it up. I would have never known about it if not for your review. Thanks!

Colleen Cathrae: I love Curlsmith Bond Curl, I also really like my olaplex, I like innate life's scalp treatment, I have been using Curlsmith scalp stimulating booster and love how my scalp does not get itchy near the end of the week, about to try out the Curlsmith full lengths booster, hoping it may help with my hairline as well. I want to try the living proof one since your IG post but should give the Curlsmith ones their chance first.

MsO123: Your videos have been so helpful. You are the only person I have found with my exact hair type. You have actually helped me answer what hair type I have. I currently have been using curl smith for over a year and I absolutely love them! I was using devacurl before and I lost so much hair I have so much trouble. I’m in a evil cycle of curling my hair normally (curl girl routine) EXCEPT for my bangs…I straighten them and they are so much shorter than my hair. Could almost be full bangs. I try to let them curl as is and it never looks good. It’s just embarrassing going with it natural and straightened. I know I need to stop…just don’t know how to style. :( Is there anyway You would be able to help me out?

julissa julissa: As always, thank you Gena for the informational video!

Kurly Breeze: Another great video! Your color looks amazing!! Have you tried out the Curlsmith hair vitamins, scalp stimulating booster & full density elixir? Curious about your thoughts

Rottem G: as a girl with curly hair your videos are very helpful

Espi: Great video! Did you notice if your hairline became sparse again after stopping the usage of Living proof? Definitely would like to try this product and the Curlsmith line!

Debbie Perez: As always super informative! Thank you for this video

Ameera Khan: Hey Gena I have a question. I have these oils for my hair that I apply on after I wash my hair, is this beneficial? I think my hair type is 2c-3a

Rachelle P: I am so surprised shocked even that you do not use finishing oil lol. I Love finishing oil. It breaks my cast but it definitely seals in my moisture and out humidity. This works way better for my hair type then just a gel cast, without my oil frizz is a big problem.

Laura Search: Thanks for the information I have long blonde natural curly hair. I use curlsmith hair products although pricey I would highly recommend for natural curly hair

Flor Delgado: Apple cider messed "my" blond hair. Had to re-do-it! That serum looks "yummy". I live in P.R., don't have dandruff but my scalp is always so itchy and I can't go more than three days without a wash! I dont do oils either... FRIZZ! Thank you for another great video!

Willemijn Paul: I have high porosity hair and suffered from hygral fatigue so I started using coconut oil as a pre poo as this protects the hair. I also love using olaplex 3 but does it also protect from water damage? I'm not sure how to get the benefits of both?

Dagné06 Cárdenas: Thanks Gina for the bunch of information

Deborah Soetan: Are scalp treatments necessary if you have a normal scalp? Although I don’t use sulfates in my shampoos would it benefit my scalp? I love your videos and learn a lot from the information you provide.

La Gatita: Can anyone recommend a curl activator for wavy hair? I can take somewhat heavy products as long as they're not for like 4c hair

Kaylee Sanregret: I have a question about the Living Proof! I have it and I hadn't used it Or opened yet, so I'm unsure of what it should look like. It's been extremely hot wheather where I am and I'm wonderiing if the heat changed the consistency. I opened it because when I shook the bottle I could hear the product and mine comes out runny like a serum, basically clear. For some reason I have it in my head that it's suppose to be a white cream? It smells good, it's not expired. Again it's just been hot and I want to make sure the product sounds like it's ok!! Thanks in advance (:

Shannon REDZEXPRESS: Gena, ok so I don't know if I qualify for any of these methods so I'll explain my hair and maybe you can tell me. Whenever I wash my hair it curls up, I get really cute loose ringlets but when it dries, they're gone. I have to use a ton of hair spray and it usually only gives my hair crunchy beach waves. I'm a redhead and I have really thick hair
