Hey Glambassadors! I have a previous video on this subject, but honestly, there was more information to cover, and I wanted to improve the quality of the video. Of course, in doing so...my camera decided to focus more on my background than me AND I wore a shirt that totally clashed with that backbround! #EPICFAIL lol BUT thankfully the information is still quality, and this video is a short one, so hopefully I won't get dragged too badly in the comments! Anyway, I hear so many lies and misconceptions about texturizers, so I decided that it was about time that someone told the truth about texturizers! That someone might as well be me!

If you got value out of this video, one of the most helpful things you can do is click the like button! It signals to Youtube that this is quality content (despite the obvious camera issues...whomp) and that viewers like you like content like this! If you have video requests or topics you would like me to cover, simply ask me in the comments, and I will do my best to either make a video on that, or steer you to one I've already made. Until next time Glamfam, Take care, God bless, and stay glam!!

Video description:

Linwood Darkis pulls back the beauty industry's lies and deceptions and talks the truth about the chemical treatment known as texturizing. Texturizing is often marketed to give buyers the impression that it is more gentle, or not a relaxer at all. Texturizers are often marketed as hair softeners, blow out kits, texture softeners, texture release systems, and many other things, but truth be told, they are all just relaxers, hair relaxers that are left in for less time. Texturized hair is not natural, it's simply relaxed, and processed for less time. That's the simple truth of the matter. I believe that consumers should not be deceived into buying products, which is exactly why I have videos like these on the Glamfam Hair and Beauty channel. The purpose of this channel is to educate people on how to simplify proper hair care, and teach them how to do hair and styling techniques. Linwood is a licensed cosmetologist and cosmetology instructor, and he teaches high school aged students on a daily basis.

Hey Graham family wood here and today, I'm gon na be talking to you guys about texturizers and a little bit of the details about them, because I feel like there's common misconceptions that we really need to discuss now. For those who may not know texturizers often market is a product that makes the hair curly or makes the hair less currently possibly more manageable. Things like that, and, of course, what people in the natural hair community that are going natural or looking for more manageable ways about going about they're here, internet a lot of them returning away from relaxers, but are looking for other ways to be able to more easily Manipulate their hair. That being said in comes the texturizer. Now there are a lot of different products now that are posing themselves. I want to make sure that we touch on all of them, some shape, wave form or capacity, so we've got texturizers s, curls chemical softeners, chemical, stretching creams, they've got so many different name blow out. Kids name it honestly. What it boils down to is: it's all. Relaxer, the main thing that makes it different from relaxer is the fact that you're leaving it in less time so with a relaxer. Its job is to take the hair from curly or kinky and relax out that curl. It'S job is not to get your hair. All the way straight, a relaxer so lessen or relax the curl down now a texturizer is doing the same job. It'S just left and less time. So it's at less of an intensity. If you leave it in longer, it's the exact same chemical as a relaxer. If you look at the warning labels on the back, it has the exact same warnings. So if your goal was to step away from relaxer, because you were trying to have healthier hair and you decided to go to something like a texturizer you're, actually running away from one abusive situation into another abuse in a situation. That being said, please make sure that you are reading your products before you put them on there, because a marketer shop in this industry is to make you buy. It'S not necessarily to educate you so a lot of times if you're not reading the back of the container, not just the front. You won't understand, and I understand how this happens, because I haven't always been a licensed cosmetologist myself. I remember my first time. I used the texturizer. I had been wearing relaxer and decided that one of my curls back, I saw the s curl box and saw the do with these curls on there and me not understanding how this product worked. I thought, if I put this on here, it will cause my curls to come back and it will look the guy on the escrow box. I did not realize that I was literally running that same chemical through my hair and running over here that had already been relaxed. So next thing you know I ended up with over process and and still ended up with relaxed roots and not a curl in sight. That being said, be careful about what you're putting in your hair, especially if you don't understand the chemical process of it. It'S dangerous things like that, because you can do serious damage to your hair. You can do serious damage to your scalp. You can end up with chemical burns and I really want to make sure you guys are as armed as possible with the best information you can get in regards to these products. That being said, a kitty perm, a chemical blowout kit, a texture, softening kit, a s curl any of those - is all going to fall, underneath that same umbrella of relaxer, and even if it's got a child's face on the box. It'S still the same thing inside the only difference is now they can sell it to a child, because it's got fruity your since on the shampoo and the conditioner and they snot the child's face on the box of some pretty writing. It'S the same chemical warnings on the back, and if you read those warnings, it'll tell you just like the adult ones that can burn your scalp and it can cause serious damage to include baldness chemical burns and all sorts of other things. Jolie Noire: Licensed cosmetologist here! Perfect timing for this video! With the quarantine clients are going natural and/or doing the big chop! But struggling with manageability because of their texture. This is on point and to the point! With all this branding and mislabeling it’s so easy to believe that one is different. That’s why it’s important to read labels. Love your channel!

Sharice Bryant: Thank you for debunking the “texturizers are more gentle” myth. It’s all still a relaxer if someone chooses to relax their hair bc they personally don’t want to deal with it in its natural state, then fine but i hate when those who get texturizers try to act as if they’re still natural. Honey, you are not and that’s your choice and it’s okay. But just know you’re still relaxed

Whitakers Way: I love that this video was short sweet and to the point

Felicia Dunn: Thanks Linwood for explaining everything! It’s still a relaxer! Just in a prettier box!

Michele H.: Ugh I became a victim of the Jheri curl in the Kindergarten (which just happens to be the same year my sister got her cosmetology license ). I got delivered from that sin & shame around 4th grade when she started giving me regular perms (equipped with scalp sores of course). I really thought that was a way of life until I went to college. I started transitioning but that is a tough process so I started perming only about 2 times a year. Then, I convinced myself that I really didn’t need the chemicals since my hair broke off regularly. The healthiest head of hair I’ve ever had is now at 40, where I wash, condition, and place in a protective style (braids usually). Periodically, I pull out the old-fashioned straightening comb. But it’s not a need—I love my natural hair and its struggles. After all, it is healthy. BTW: I GOT MY GLAM FAM T-SHIRT!

Zip Itshut: My sister: I’m getting my hair texturized. Me: you’re getting a perm. My sister: no texturized Me: a kiddie perm. My sister: no my natural hair just better. Me:

Stacy Salome Umutoni: Thank you so very much for putting this into words! I used texturisers 2 on my natural hair journey advised by family and friends and STILL CAM OUT WITH STRAIGHT HAIR! they told me I was going crazy when I said it was a relaxer just a different name! Hair was beyond over-processed and broke; I've stayed far far away from this myth. Just thank you for educating the people. I'm getting my healthy hair back by watching your videos. I knew it! Imm going to share this video a billion times... THANK YOU!!

Kimberly Willis: Thank you for clearly and succinctly answering all the questions I was thinking. I appreciate your information so that I did not jump into an abusive situation after years of natural wear. Many thanks to you!

troubledangel12: Thank you for this video. I've been tell my husband these same things. He's been wanting me to put a curl softener on our daughters hair and I keep refusing cause I love her curls and don't want to do damage to her hair of scalp!

S. Essilfie: When I first big chopped I put in a texturizer hoping to help out my 4C hair... Oh Lawd, I looked like an extra in a Soul Glo commercial and had to big chop again! It was a curly, unmanageable mess! I had a Jherri Curl when I was a child (still traumatized) and it wasn't nearly as bad as that texturizer!

Tea D: Thank you for this video. My friend told me years ago texturizing is the same as relaxing. I'm so frustrated with my 4C hair. I've been trying to take care of it for about 8 years. I'm finally finding products at my hair loves but I'm still having a lot of shrinkage. It is what it is. I'm starting to love my hair but it's a lot of work still.

Lillian Santiago: My daughter had told me the exact same thing! Of course being her mom I was suspect but hearing you confirms her (and makes me smile!)

luvlocs06: When I big chopped back in 2001, I had my stylist do a texturizer. Didn't work (my hair is strong-willed like me!) so my natural hair journey began. I'm personally glad it didn't work!

BlondeDivaTV Channel: Facts! Similarly bleaching has relaxed my curl pattern from coils to wavy. When my new growth comes in I clearly have 2 different curl patterns happening

Rosita Richardson: Thank you so much for this video! I thought that I was doing better by choosing the texturizer however my daughters hair still fell out around the edges.

XX_Inertia _XX: Used a texturizer a few days ago and I learned that one side of my hair is longer than the other

HairTutorial: I love the very thorough and detailed information that you dispense. Thank you!

Eshelle Bennett: A jheri curl was put on me and my sisters hair. My mom went gangster and literally whooped up on the girl who did it. We had burns on our scalps and our hair was broken. And ugly. My mom had to put our hair in braids until it got better. The 2nd and last time a relaxer of any sort was put on my hair i was in 11th grade and my besties mom/hairstylist did it. And she gave me rules to follow to keep my hair up. It was my first WANTED haircut too.

F C: Your video is so educational. I regret texturizing. Continue to give tips on the causes of rough texturized end. I hate styling my hair.

Carol James: Amen I think we should simply leave those chemicals to the professionals, like yourself. Thanks again for always providing great information

DarkCandy essentials: I am so happy I came across your video because I was this close to going to get a texturizer so I can be able to manage my 4z hair better. Thank you for the informative info

nah Kennedy: My mom was pissed when my grandma put one in my hair she said my curl pattern hasn't been the same since. As she use to use in my hair was water, gel, and grease

Princess Pink: Speak that truth!! I'm starting to see alot of people using S curl gels and activator sprays on their hair now. #1 I thought they stopped selling that in the 90's. #2 are those products just as dangerous as the boxed chemicals?

Tammy Anderson: I had to stop using relaxers because my hair was breaking off in clumps and now my hair is so messed up and im trying to get my hair healthy again. The hair struggle is real for me, I need lots of help.

Adell: I have "mixed Hair' and texturerized for awhile. At first helped my hair to accept moisturizers but now, I want to lt texturizer grow out but my hair is very dry and I have use tons of moisturizers to keep it from being dry and frizzy but that doesnt last long, Any suggestions on good long lasting moisturizer?

Liv W: Yall betta listen! Once upon a time, I had a jerri curl. When I got sick of having to sit there for hours and go through the entire curl process, I straightened my hair. How? With the creamy crack that comes in the curl kit. ‍♀️

mrscoxton: Thank you. I am trying to go natural. I have thick 4c hair and my scalp is soar from me combing my hair. I was searching for help and ran across a texturizing video and I was ready to jump in and then saw your video next. I am bummed but I’m glad I was educated.

maggie anderson: Love it, thanks for not dragging your information out. Very informative, to the point.

Elizabeth Gonzalez: The active ingredient in a hair relaxer is: Sodium Hydroxide (Aka: Lye). They are ALL the same. I used that chemical to make bar soap. It is very very strong. Like liquid lava after mixed with water. That’s why relaxed hair smells burned after application.

Blackwidow456: I am glad I let the relaxer go, the chemicals made my scalp itchy and dry and it never lasted. The Alabama humidity took my hair straight back to natural.

Tanisha Slater: i was JUST about to get a texturized!!!! Now i'm combing through your channel to get my learn on. I'm in big chop hell!

Isheba Gayle: My relaxed hair was so amazing . What went wrong was BLEACHING it so now my hair it natural . And I honestly don’t think that I can manage it completely natural however I will wait a few more months for more growth to make a decision. But I will try a texturize next instead of bone straight but umma let my mom do it

Girl In Tha World: Clear, concise and straight to the point. No pun intended.

Studying the Bible with Sheri: Linwood, Your videos are always so informative and fun! I have fine curly natural hair and some grey. I tried putting in a rinse to cover it up once or twice and each time my curl pattern was messed up. What do you think about Hair Wax to cover my grey? Blessings!

P Bron: Hi. My 5yr old son's hair was texturized at suggestion of stylist at the salon after I expressed how tough it was to comb out/detangle and manage. He has very thick, packed "cottony" hair that sucks up moisture and often looks dry (except right after being washed). However when its wet, his curl pattern is beautiful. I can't seem to find any styling or conditioning products that work to make his hair soft, manageable, moist and have sheen. Only thing Ive tried that makes a little noticeable impact are styling products with honey. That was about 1.5 yrs ago. I'm concerned if I made the wrong choice and "messed up" his hair as it seems More coarse, More dry, More shrunken and is impossible to comb or brush unless its done while shampoo/conditioner is on (and even then he howls that it hurts ). He doesn't really get haircuts, (occasional lining like 2x/year) so the hair from 1.5 yrs ago is presumably still there....altogether his hair is @8 inches long when stretched out. Do I need to look at cutting most or all of his hair off in an attempt to get rid of this texturizer and so new hair can grow in?

Bstung34: Yeah.... I also learned the texturizer lesson. I had been natural for years and used a texturizer to loosen my coils as I am a 4a with a fine strands. Yep straight hair. Never again

T G: *It's not just 'how long you leave it in' as the main difference, it's HOW ITS how more or less its SMOOTHED (worked through) during application.*

trishalachell: Hey Linwood...what category does beautiful texture naturally straight fall in??? And can it cause damage to the hair?

Anitakins: After this morning's video I came here to get a better understanding...this is really helpful because I'm on the road of going natural and its gets confusing sometimes...thanks

BookWormNatureLover: I'm mixed and my hair is curly and so hard to manage especially after moving to humid FL. I wish i could find something that helps me

Mia: Hi, only discovered your page today as I've been looking into 'Texture release'. Is this also a 'Mild Relaxer? Thanks P.S Subscribed straight away. Your content is so informative :)

Because_I_Have_To: Unfortunately, learned this lesson the hard way Thank you for sharing so others don't have to

darcey derosa: I got better results with the Texture softener. I lost less hair and I was able to retain my growth

MichelleT: So why are we always shamed about taking the route towards having more manageable hair? People of other ethnicities apply chemicals to make their hair less frizzy, etc yet they aren’t shamed into thinking their hair is any less natural.

Whitakers Way: Thanks for posting this I don’t think I would ever try a texturizer because it’s all relaxers

Imagin TheInk: Man, and I was thinking about getting a texturizer. I don't mind having natural hair but I wanted to try something different but it sounds like I am just stuck with the hair I have lol! I'm too scared to try something that might damage my hair but still the same time idk what I can do with it and it's not fun to manage at the moment lol.

Serenity Joy: Thanks Linwood! This info is needed bc I feel like that's a more recent product that by the packaging tries to make itself seem gentler.

Jour Arch: Thank you. Informative, clear and concise.

Rose Aduke: Lin, could you do a video on the particularities, pros & cons of a curly perm? Thanks. Oh wow. Looks like you're doing matchy-matchy with your background. I see you Lin! Cheers!

Charonda Jordon: Thank you ! Please tell me how you got your curls back. What did you do? how long did it take? and what is your maintenance routine? It's been three months since my last relaxer and I'd rather have my curls back. The braid outs don't work and I'm not a products person. I've seen hundreds of video with at least 10 products just to barely get a curl. Please help me.

Nicki Venable: LOVED your video. Are you natural or do you still use perms? Thank you!

Natasha C Hagans: I know you posted the video about texturizing your hair about a year ago. About 3years ago I did the wave neaveu(however it’s spelled). I have 4c and it’s painful to comb my hair, I want to make my hair easier to comb and bring out whatever curl pattern I have

Taylor Livest: Make sense because every time I would put a s curl in my head a week later it’s like the back of my hair had a bald spot, loss of hair in the back ...what is the best texturize to use ?

Veckna: Watching this video while I was texturizing my hair, I’m a boss!

A Nelson: Wow....well said and informative. Thanks so much!

AfroTina8: Gm. Thank you so much for this break down!!! You are truly a lifesaver!!

Feven Gebrezgi: so... is there anyway I can loosen my curls naturally now?

Stacey British: Wow good to know.! I just cut off all my hair and the hairdresser said the next time she could use a texturizer on my hair. I will not do it.

Radhia Namatsi23: But I can't deal with my natural hairit's been two years of taking care of my natural hair and am calling it quits

Precious A: My first time here. Found this while searching for information about texturizers. I love my hair but I want to make my curls bigger, they frustrate me when I want to style sometimes. I'm in college and having to put so much time into styling my hair every morning before going to class can be stressful and even make me late. I live in Nigeria and I don't even know any good hair stylist that can help me texturize, so I'm thinking of doing it myself. What methods or steps should I follow to do this? My friend says my hair is 4b, is it still safe to go through the texturizing process? Apart from that I'd live to try something new, that's how I went natural after having relaxed hair for about 17 years (my whole life). Please assist me

Simply Quintessa: What do you suggest then to soften the curl? I was just about to run out and get a texturizer. Been natural for two years.

Renz B: I have really thick and coarse 4c hair.I oil my scalp but my hair is still tough.i was thinking of texturizing but do you know any alternatives

Sadiera: I had a relaxer for years and finally big chopped and now my hair is back. Which I'm grateful for but the while thing of getting the relaxer in the first place was because my hair is really thick and 4c/4b .so if texturizer won't help but still hurt what will.

Tracy: I wish I knew this about four months ago. I have a “scary curl” according to my niece!

DJBlack909: My mom has been trying to persuade me to let her texturize my hair. Should I go for it?

jhibblerablly: So true. Those kiddie relaxer would burn just like the adult ones. Glad to be away from all that. Great video. Nice background and the shirt was fine. Now if the shirt was green with the wall we might've been concerned to see a floating Linwood.

ObiRonz: I wish I would of found this video two days ago before I put this texturizing kit in my head lol trying to loosen up my curls

Annette Patterson: Thanks baby for telling the truth. I'm going to stay natural.

Michelle Hamilton: Tell tha truth! Shame tha devil! Good morning, Lin!!! Hello to all my GlamFam! Sending you all my love...we’re close to the weekend!

Nisa19s: I heard the term flash texturizer. What does that mean? I'm going to cut my hair next month and have been trying to understand the difference between relaxers and texturizers and I saw that term.

Cathye Cooper: ‍♀️ I knew it! You always keep it ~ tfs this info

Cherry Darwel: Thanks for the information. I was about to go het a texturing kit.

S Call: Very good information , my niece hair got damaged from kiddie perm

Tracee Jay: So what do you suggest for more manageable 4c hair?

Emoretta Robinson: I didn't know that about texturizers. I thought of them more as a step before a jheri curl. And I wondered if they were what I'd heard my mother talk about male black celebrities getting in the 60's? I think she called it a "process". If you look at early pictures of the "Temptations", Little Richard and Chuck Berry and even Nat King Cole you'll see what I'm talking about. I've been natural since 2013. I haven't put anything in my hair to help chemically manipulate it. But I did use a product that I was told was a good detangler. And for some reason I ended up having a sore spot in the back of my head. And that was one of my issues with relaxers. It didn't matter who did them, if they put oil or whatever on my scalp beforehand or not. No matter what they did I'd end up with at least one sore spot in the back of my head just above where my hairline ended. And that area would be sore for a week or two. I now wonder if this is an allergic reaction to something? But I'm not sure what chemical or ingredient would cause that.

S Aarons: Thanks for this What’s your opinion on Avalon texture release product (don’t know if there are other products like that)? Is this really a good option to more easily manipulate / look after hair but is less “damaging” etc. than relaxer?

crissy k: I love his wisdom he's always so interesting.

Bryant Johnson: Thanks man I did one of those kids and left it in too long now my hair straight. It's not that long but I dont want to cut it. What should I do?

mszstacynich: Notifications are actually working! As always thank you for the great information!!!!

Esther Sowell: Chemicals killed my hair years ago I wish I had that knowledge then by the way love the back drop

Jamel Johnson: Good information fam, you taught me something new my nephew asked me about a texturizer and I needed information. And nuffin wrong with your shirt

Blue Swallowtail: Very informative. Thank you so much!

Pink Light: My natural hair get's frizzy, what other options are there? I'm thinking of a texturizer.

Audra G: Thank you so much! Informative as always!

RoyalNykki: Do a video on the Gina Curl please, your thoughts on it.

Rosalie Jones: I am currently using Keratin as a treatment. Do I need to continue with or can I change the brand?

L A: Can you do a video on curly perm, wave nouveau, curl free perm or GinaCurl?

Luli Mau: Great info please do a similar video on Box Color marketed to African American textures. I feel the same Tim foolery is going on!!!

Calisa Hardy: To the point!! I feel wrong about saying "thanks hair daddy"... Lol but that's the first thing I thought!!

nbarbee50: so im letting my hair grow out I had a straight perm and did the big chop now I want curly hair what should I use?

Naomiluvsice: Thank you for informing us.

BRIDGE35: Thank you for detailing the truth

tifani b: IS A Keratin Treatment the same as a relaxer/texturizer?

Cynthia McKenzie: Thank you sooooo much I was about to make a big mistake.

G Dubbs: Is there a different in the sodium hydroxide, sodium thiosulfate, and the calcium hydroxide? I think I got those chemicals right?

Beverly B: I did consider using a texturizer, glad I didn't do it.

_EyesThatSmile: Thank you for this video!!

Myraisins1: It's the same chemical but is there any that is not as strong? I thought the blow out kit was the mildest because you were streching/ creating an afro.

Zariyah Williams: Thank God I watched this before making my finale decision
