How I Use The Denman Brush | Styling 2B/2C Hair

In this video I'm showing you guys the best way to style my 2B/2C hair with the denman brush. This brush is a very popular tool to help style, shape and define curls. I find for me, it works best for giving me definition over volume. The denman brush also helps me with frizz control because my hair is dry and needs moisture and help to tame the frizz.

Hi everyone welcome back to my channel if you're new welcome. My name is christina and i talk all things beauty. So, if you're, looking for the best and most honest reviews and how to's from a consumer's perspective, then make sure to subscribe to my channel as well as liking this video and leaving any questions or comments in the comment box down below for me. So in this video today, i'm going to be showing you guys how i use the denman brush on my 2b 2c hair um. I do have permed hair if you guys have never seen those videos. I take you on the journey of my whole perm thing and updates, but i wanted to show you guys how i use the denman brush. I know there's a ton of videos out there with different techniques, but i wanted to show you what i found has been the most effective for my hair. So i'm looking for definition a little bit of volume, but mostly definition and frizz control, usually people that are going through a curl journey go from more limp curls to very curly hair. Well, mine does the complete opposite. So i'm going to be showing you guys the technique that works for me through all of the faces of my curly hair. So i already washed my hair. I just jumped out of the shower my hair. I left it really really drenched i'm going to have to re-wet it, though, because you want to make sure that, through the process of styling your hair to avoid frizz, you want to make sure it's very wet. So it retains that moisture. I have this little spray bottle and i'm gon na go ahead and re-mist my hair, because i do see a little bit of frizz forming because my hair dries super fast. So i'm gon na do that and i am wearing a robe. That'S like a lighter color, because i want you guys to be able to see the curls that uh the denman brush creates because i feel like if i wore a black shirt, you won't be able to see it because my hair is black. So i'm sorry, if you can see all the wet spots on my clothes, i'm really making sure that the ends are very soaked, because i get a lot of frizz there. So first i'm going to go ahead and use a leave-in conditioner. The reason i do this is because my hair tends to frizz because it needs that moisture. It'S become very dry since curling it. So i have this farewell: frizz from briochio. It'S a rosarco milk, leave-in conditioning spray, but i go from the briogeo one to the shea moisture jamaican black, castor oil, leave-in conditioner, i'm gon na spray, the entire length of my hair. With this, i'm super generous with my products, especially my leave-in conditioner, just gon na rake this through to make sure that it's through all the lengths of my hair for today, i'm using my moroccan oil defining cream. I would suggest really just using defining cream to help with curl clumps and also with hydration again. This will really help encourage the clumps whenever i'm using my denman brush. Also, i love the smell of moroccan oil products. It'S my absolute favorite scent so again, being very generous with this. That'S about four pumps and i'm gon na put this throughout the lengths of my hair and as we go, i'm gon na be adding more curl cream for the cream, so it doesn't weigh down my hair. I like to take it from about here down to the ends. I don't like to use it too much on my roots, because i feel like creams, can really weigh down my hair. Specifically, if i do use a little bit i'll only use, what's left on my hands to just like go like this rake it through a couple times and that's it. I'M using a combination of prayer, hands and raking through my hair to get this evenly distributed. But the brush will also help to distribute all of that cream. So i'm going to take my dendin brush. This is the first step of using this, and i'm just going to take it through my hair to make sure that the product is evenly distributed, and i'm doing this super gently, you don't want to tug on the hair or anything. It'S not very great. For me to detangle, so i make sure that my hair is detangled before taking the brush and through my hair, this is literally just to get the product through all right. Next up, i'm using this moroccan oil curl control mousse. I like to use a combination of mousse and defining cream for my usual styling, sometimes i'll, throw in other things, but this is like my go-to, so that's about like six pumps, i think and again prayer hands and distributing the same way. I did with the defining cream, then i'm taking the brush again and very lightly distributing that product. If you can see the product in your hair, that's okay! I used to freak out because i thought that it wouldn't like soak into my hair and it would be way too much product, but whenever you're using the denman brush a good amount of it gets stuck into the brush. So you don't have to worry about too much product and my hair does end up soaking it up. So i'm not too worried about it. I'M gon na go ahead and section my hair from top to bottom, just two sections and then we're gon na work from side to side all right. So i have the top section already clipped up and we're gon na work on the bottom section. So, throughout this entire process, while i'm using the denman brush, i'm going to make sure that my hair stays wet. So i'm gon na consistently use my spray bottle as i go, and i want it to be very, very wet so anytime that it doesn't feel like it's like soaking wet, i'm gon na re-wet it. So for me, i like to take larger sections of hair whenever i'm running it through the denman brush. So i know, there's a technique and i'll show you guys that now, where you run it through the hair and then flick it towards the end, and that creates a little ringlet at the bottom. If you can see that and then you shake the hair, so it encourages a clump, and then you scrunch it. However, for me, i feel, like my hair really needs encouraging to become a full ringlet, so we're gon na kind of do finger coils with the denman brush. I'M gon na take a section here about one and a half to two inches. It'S a pretty large section. I'M gon na go ahead and lift at the root with the denim brush and then go down the lengths. But before releasing it, i'm going to go ahead and curl so right at the end, i'm going to do a little curl right there and then i'm gon na continue to twist my brush. So it forms an entire twist up the top. You can see right there and then i'm going to take my hand and just squish it, and this i find really helps my hair, create those ringlets that i'm looking for and i'm going to do this a couple times until i see a good ring forming so Right here you can see there's a good ringlet at the bottom. However, right here it's creating more of an s curl, so i want to continue to encourage that ringlet to go all the way up and make that curl really curly and if you need to add water, go ahead. There'S really like you cannot mess up by putting too much water, i mean your hair could get weighed down, but for me i find it's okay and i'm gon na do the same thing that i did earlier. I'M gon na grab a clump right here, starting from the top i'm going to kind of pull it upwards and then out and then form that curl right as i hit the bottom, i'm periodically moving my denim brush like half an inch as i curl and i Like to do mine outwards, because that's how i have my curls going naturally, so this is the twist i'm gon na go ahead and scrunch it up. I would suggest that you follow how your hair, naturally curls. So if you have some that go inwards and outwards kind of you know try to follow that pattern, because your curls are going to look the best when you're not forcing it to go in an unnatural way. So again, this last section i'm going to go ahead and take this oops. I messed up, it does take practice and i do mess up a lot still, but i know that this specific technique is what i want to do and then scrunch it. I'M gon na re-wet the hair and you're just gon na do this throughout your entire head. I know that there's also another way i'll show you guys. You don't have to do this way that i like to do some people take it from the top down. So they'll go like this, where it's facing downwards and then take it and curl, and then you use the handle to coil the hair, so it acts like your finger. So if you're finger coiling, that would be your finger and then release it. This way there you go and then scrunch it up. So really you can do whatever feels the most natural for you. Whatever you think is easiest. It'S the same concept, you're, really just coiling your curls. If you want smaller ringlets go right ahead, just do smaller sections but, like i said i kind of like the bigger ones. I find also it's a lot easier for me to hold the brush as i twist and pull down. I know it's not the easiest for you guys to see so i'm trying to just hold the handle all right. So this whole bottom section is done, so i'm going to take down some more hair and i'm only going to take down this side and work on this side. Oh, i also wanted to note that i will be pulling each like section of curl apart after my hair dry, so i'm not afraid of getting too big of a section. I'D rather have too big of a section than too little, and it looks really stringy. So, if you're not sure which direction your hair goes, you can brush it out and then kind of shake it to see how it naturally is forming. So this one i can see is going inwards towards the bottom, so i'm going to use the denman brush and encourage this curl clump to go in and i am sometimes twisting it towards the middle rather than the very bottom. This helps to keep all of the sections of hair in there because sometimes, if you get to the bottom, some layers of your hair might be shorter and like fall out of the brush again, whatever feels most natural, most comfortable for you and sometimes i'll use. My finger, if i wanted to go even higher like to the root i'll use, my finger to finish the coil, because the end might be a little too small for my whole denim brush. And since this is in the front, i want it to coil as high as possible. So now i'm just going to scrunch that one and my hair is very long and like awkward, so i have to kind of get it all in a pile in my hand. So i'm like zigzagging up that one looks so good. Can you see this looks really cute and then last section is gon na be right here, same thing: actually, i'm gon na do this in two, so i'm gon na do another top and bottom section, because since my hair parts this way i have more hair here. There'S a ton of product there, i'm just gon na scrunch it and then trying to get some of that excess product up top since brushing through it. It seems like it went towards the bottom. Also, i'm periodically wiping my hand on a towel because it does get really slippery with all the product and water and stuff and it gets difficult to maneuver the brush, because the grip isn't that great on here. It'S just really sleek and this one. Actually, this section isn't that great, because you can see here it's too wide of a section, so it's not going to want to naturally clump, so that's kind of creating a broomstick look. You want it more to be like this, where it's closer together, it'll, naturally clump better, so i'm gon na leave this and do it with this top section since this one's at the top of my head. I don't know if you guys can see that so this is at the top of my head, i'm going to brush it upwards and then do the twist. Can you see that god, my hair's, so long, okay and last section right here at the front, all right, so my entire head is done. I have all the ringlets that i want there's still a little product right here, but that'll go away and what i'm going to do is re-wet the hair again. Just because i feel like the top is kind of drying reroute it one more time, but i'm not going to rake through, and this next step is actually really optional. Um. I do this. Sometimes i don't always do it, but because i'm looking for a lot of definition, i'm gon na be using more of a gel product. This is the dippity. Do girls with curls jelly and the reason i'm going to be using. This is again. I want to create a cast that i can scrunch out later, because it'll really help with definition. So i'm just taking about this much, i'm going to put it through my fingers and what i'm going to do is go on the outside of each ringlet. So i'm not going to rake or anything i'm just going to coat the ringlets with the gel, very gently. You don't want to disturb anything and it kind of helps to lift it like this too, a little bit of a prayer hand, not squishing down or anything. I'M kind of scrunching the bottoms together. I don't know why i just feel like they need one last scrunch, and sometimes i do go in after putting the gel in and i scrunch everything like i'll. Do this motion and the final step before air drying i'm going to take the same microfiber towel? You always want to make sure it's microfiber, because that's going to prevent the frizz and i'm just gon na get any excess water. That'S in my hair to help it dry more evenly and like faster, i'm taking my hands underneath it like this and then doing this motion, i'm not going like gently scooping it up and then squeezing any excess out just holding it there and then dropping her and Then taking a dry section same thing, scooping it up and then just squeezing to get that excess out. I really only want to do one go on each section with the towel, because the more you do it, the more you're gon na separate the clumps, and we don't want that so one good squish on each section. So now, what i'm gon na do is i'm gon na let my hair air dry for about an hour or two hours and then i'm gon na go in and after two hours or so i'm gon na diffuse the hair. Anything that's left wet because i want a little bit of volume up here. You can see it's super flat right now diffusing. It will really help with that. So i'll be back with you guys in a few hours to check in and also show you the final steps, i guess all right, everyone i am back and it has been roughly three hours since i finished styling my hair and my curls are, i would say, Like 75 to 80 percent dry, the top is still pretty wet, though, and i can still feel um a lot of water in there. So i'm gon na go ahead and diffuse my hair, i think it's about ready and i have my hair dryer right here. It'S just a rust hair dryer and then i have a diffuser attachment that i bought from amazon like last year. So i'll link that in the description for you guys in the bottom, it's supposed to be a universal one, and it's done pretty well for me. So far, i also wanted to note that i did put in these little uh clips to help my roots kind of push up and give it a little bit of volume. While it was drying - because i noticed when i have a lot of moisture in my scalp when it's air drying, it tends to lay flatter. So i wanted to kind of just encourage some root lift there and i use these little clips and i have like a bunch of them in here and i believe i bought them at like sally's or walmart, or something like that. I can't quite remember, but i know you can get them on amazon as well, so i'll also link that in the description box for you, but this is what they look like they're pretty standard, and i just use it to really gently clip my hair, alright. So this is what the ringlets are looking like, currently they're, looking really really good, there's, not a ton of separation within the ringlets. This part is not as great right now um. It is kind of separating up here, but it is forming a good ringlet at the bottom, the ones i really focused on twisting and then finger coiling towards the end um. I think turned out really well like this one's really good. We have a little bit of a stray guy right here. That'S dry, but that's okay, it'll end up looking fine, i'm really liking how large these chunks are. So i can tell whenever i pull them apart, they're going to be super defined. So now i'm just going gon na go ahead and diffuse. I typically i mean i don't have a set like rule for diffusing. I know a lot of people diffuse on cool and warm uh, and i think today, since my hair, is mostly dry, i'm going to go ahead and do warm and then just switch from high to low settings. So the temperature and the speed that you go really depends on what you're looking for and what your hair really reacts well to. I know a lot of people do it on a cool setting the entire time to prevent frizz. So if your big thing is frizz try doing a cool setting, it is going to take longer, but you'll probably get the results that you're looking for better that way. But today, since my hair is mostly dry, i think i'm going to do it on a warm temperature. I guess i'll just see how fast my hair is drying and then i'm gon na try to stay on a low setting, so i'm gon na go ahead and do that all right guys. So the length of my hair pretty much feel dry. There'S a couple of what spots that i'm still going to hit, but right now i'm going to focus on the crown and giving it some volume. So there's a little bit of wetness i'd say like 5 of it there's like a little bit of a wet spot. So i'm actually going to take the diffuser and use it to push up my roots and really get in there and dry the roots, and this is one of the only times that i'm really going to be touching the hair with the diffuser. So my hair is completely dry. It took a little longer than i thought it would. I did about 30 minutes, but because i wanted to make sure it was super super dry and i wasn't seeing too much frizz happening, so i didn't end it like sooner than that. This is what it's looking like. A lot of the ringlets are still intact. So now what i'm going to do is take some oil and then kind of separate them and scrunch the crunch out. It'S not a ton. I mean they still feel pretty good. So it's not going to take too much to get that crunch out for the oil that i'm using today, i'm going to be using the moroccan oil oil treatment. I love this. This is my first love um hair oil. If you guys have seen my how to curl short hair video, i used this and i just love this. I'Ve been using it for years. I just have a small bottle here, but these will last you for such a long time very small amount. I'M gon na put this mainly in my fingertips. I always have to smell. It smells so good and then i'm gon na lightly brush over before i start separating kind of get it in there too, and then i'm gon na start separating the curls that i want. You can also kind of like rake your fingers through. I will probably be doing that, but for now i'm just going to take my fingers and separate them because you can kind of like customize it better. That way. I guess - and i won't do this all the time like i'll, do it, if i really really am looking to get that definition for like a special occasion, or i just like, want my hair to look this way i'll, do it if, like i have the time And energy, but usually i'll just do a wash and go routine use the denman brush a little bit and then not let my hair air dry like i'll, just diffuse right away. Now i'm going to go ahead and scrunch it, and this will also kind of pull them apart too. I also have this little comb pick thing, so i'm going to flip my head over and kind of pick through it and get the roots to really come off of the head, and then i'm going to try to add a little bit of volume. That way - and you can pull these ringlets apart as much as you want as little as you want, you can keep them big. You can make them really small. It'S really up to you. I like to do a mixture of both honestly, okay guys. This is what the hair looks like after everything is done. I like the definition that the hair has. It really helps to do the denman brush and like do the little spirals i find for me. I can't really brush through shake the hair out and my hair. Doesn'T automatically form those spirals, so i have to definitely help it out. Some of them are better than others like right here. I wish that the top was a little more spiraled, but you know you get what you get with curly hair, but overall the definition is really nice. This definition happening here turn around all right, so i took you guys out of the bathroom, so you could kind of see better. The definition that's happening right here, really nice and defined. I know that like spirals and stuff like this definitely a personal preference, and then i find that my hair wears better this way, so after washing, whenever i have product in it, instead of just scrunching in the product and letting it dry or diffusing it doing. This will make my curls last a lot longer like. I think i could get them to last like four to five days and still look really nice all right guys. So let me know what you think of this: video is the denman brush, something that you might want to try out, or is it something that you've had but haven't really figured out how you like to use it best if we have the same type of hair And you do try this out, please let me know how it does for you. I would love to know if i was able to help anyone with this video, that's it for now guys. I hope that you enjoyed it and if you did please make sure to like comment and subscribe for more videos like this one and i'll see you guys in my next video bye, you

Kristina Aranilla: What are your thoughts on the denman brush? Is this a technique you might try?

elisa campanelli: hey i naturally have 3a/2c hair, i would recommend using the denman brush first then going through and scrunching the mouse in (not raking). it really just helps to define the curls and lock them in while also avoiding frizz

Icecream Cake: Your hair looks really pretty! I'm pretty sure you could even call it 2c/3a with those ringlets being able to form.

Nika Hrastovec: Thank you so much! Your technique is absolutely amazing for my hair and my curls have never been prettier ❤

Lennon Anderson: I have very similar hair to you and I have always been struggling with frizz and no definition. This seems to work very well on you and I will be trying this routine soon! Thank you!

Nachteules: A great video! Thank you! It really helps that you included several techniques and some great tips. :) It can be misleading at first when someone with naturally coily hairy just glides the Denman brush through their hair and they get those gorgeous curls. My hair needs a lot of help to forn and maintain a coil since I lost a lot of my curl pattern which is why I prefer your technique.

Ʀémi❤️: I was struggling sm with how to use the deman brush, my curls ended up looking super big and clumped on first use. But I reaaally love how straightforward this tutorial was!! Your curls looks beautiful I tend to diffuse right away, since I'm so impatient lmao but I'll try and air dry for an hour! I'm definitely gonna use your guidance for my next wash day!! Tysm❤️✨

Neno Jamme: This was a such a clear explanation, thanks! Just found out about the denman brush, I’m gonna order it and will definitly try your technique :)

Aditi Ratna Kumar: A newbie CG here! My hair doesn't automatically do the rings with the brush-shake either! Definitely going to try this! Thank you for sharing

Maria Alvarez: Thank you SO much for sharing your video with us! I did this method today after washing my hair and it looks SO good. I just got a perm and everything is so new to me. I love your method, ty!

SunLovingLady: Great video! Thank you for showing us the steps slower so we can actually SEE what you're doing. I've watched other people's videos and often can't see the direction they are taking the brush, how they are dividing their sections, etc. Your hair is gorgeous!

I am Darvit: Your video is really packed full of information and I love that you explain what you're using, how, how much, and why for each product! Left you a thumbs up and subscribed ^_^

TheMrsMLJ: Thank you! Your video helped me a lot! You’re tips and instructions are perfect. Thank you for taking the time to share

Monica Dellova: Love the video! I've had a Denman brush for a year and have barely used it because I wasn't doing it right. I decided to try again and found your video and I'm going to try your techniques! How do you refresh your hair after the initial wash? I feel like that's the hardest thing for me once my ringlets are actually defined, because then I can't run my fingers through them to add product or water.

Kamilla Saliakhova: Thank you for such a detailed video! You hair looks amazing and Imma try that brush soon too❣️

Kristina De La O: i’ve been trying to figure out how to use the denman brush, saw your thumbnail and was like “wow her hair looks just like mine” then i realized we have the same name and the same spelling. now i know it’s meant to be lol!

Brooke Hamilton: I've always considered my hair to be 2b/2c but wow the ringlets I got from using this method might have to throw a 3a on there too.

128mimz: i have very similar hair to yours and actually use the same products and techniques! mine is much shorter tho, but i hope i can maintain the ringlet curls like yours as I grow it out!

pinkiepunk: i looove how detailed this video is

Cloe Cabanes Alapont: hi! I really liked the video! it was VERY helpful, although I have a question: do you ever deep condition your hair? if so, how often??

mia onufrak: this is so helpful thank you! and also i would definitely describe your hair as like 3a because of those ringlets!! they're beautiful!!

Hajar Al-sabbahy: Very useful video, thank you! I will be trying this routine tomorrow when my Denman brush arrives, so excited!

TallyHo: Super thorough-very helpful!

leela Hasan: Thank you for showing two different ways to use the denmen brush to define curls. I've seen the first method in other videos, and while it works it never works as well because I have 2C hair and not 3A-C hair. Will def try this method out next wash day.

It’s MiMi: Do you ever flip your head over and back and forth to shake your curls out? I call it the rock star head flip lol. I used to do it When I had curly hair and it was completely dry. It separates the curl and gives amazing volume

Millie M: I do curl twists with Denman brush but do it differently, twisting from top of hair. I’ll have to try your way next time and see if it works better. Your hair looks great.

EJWilly: Also if you can’t get your hands on the denman brush, Pattern makes a mini shower brush that’s 9.99 at Ulta which is practically identical!!

Veronica D: Trying this technique tomorrow. Just got my denman brush today. Your hair looks great. I never scrunch after finger coiling and I've had ppl ask if I'm starting dreads because the coils are tight.

Karlee J: My hair is super curly when wet but as it dries, no matter how much gel i use, the curls always come out and ends up being barely wavy. It’s so discouraging when i spend hours on it and when it’s finally dry it not even curly anymore help

Alysha Collyer: This video was so helpful! Thank you!!

Nat B: Can you do a video on what you do on day 2,3,4 to touch up the curls? I have a perm but I feel like on day 2 I dont like the way my curls look so I just wear my hair in a bun.

Oishee SJT: LOVE your videos! please make a video on how you diffuse your hair❤️

Stacey Shaffer: I have never seen anyone use the diffuser that way. I always placed my hair inside the diffuser. I need to get another blow dryer and diffuser so I can have my hair naturally curly. I also need to get a wet 2 dry instyler for my hair because I love having bigger curls as well. It takes 2 and a half days for my extremely thick naturally curly hair to air dry. Her hair does look good

KeyLimeTea: I use devacurl gel, wave mouse from devacurl, and lavender refresh mist from devacurl and I just bought tea tree tingle conditioner from Trader Joe’s and just got my denman brush. I think I might have 2a/2b or even 2c hair but it’s so hard to tell but it’s definitely at least 2A.

Janet Handy-Reyes: I am new curly methods. I like your technique with the brush. I have question about at the end of your 3-4 day run of not shampooing, do you brush your hair out?…..and when you do this, is your hair still curly/wavy or does it straighten out?

BbyJRose: Great technique ✨

judesmommy44: Awesome video! I love the ringlet look. Do you have a link for the diffuser please?

Evelyn Souza: Hey! I'm Brazilian and I love your videos.

Cara Copland: Best denman vid yet! Well done doll!

Insherah Saleem: Whenever i try this kind of technique my curls clump so much i separate the curls with oil as you did but they clump back together I thought it was because of buildup so i clearified my hair even got a few inches cut but it's the same issue still going on Do you have some tips on how to separate curls without making them clump back Also this technique gives me nice ringlets not loose curls like i have a combination of 3a 2c but denman brush makes them kind of more towards the wavy side

Shannon Lloyd: I need to try this routine!!!!

Stacy Ahmad: With that much product in your hair doesn't your hair feel sticky and weighted down once it is dried? If I used that many pumps I would be washing my hair the next day. I will be trying your Denman technique tomorrow. Great tutorial!

Leslie Cormier: Thank you for the great tutorial! What kind of spray bottle is that? Where can I get one?

Jozaleen Valencia: You have a perm!! I have naturally curly hair and you have a better routine than me hahah but love the tutorial!!!! Thank you very much!!!

Alexandra l: Hi very helpful video !I have very similar hair type as u but it’s more of an s shape curl and I wanted to try this but sometimes my curls don’t stay ringlets like they kind of fall how can I fix this ?

Karen Shoucair McGray: Thank you! I will try your method next.

Zunilui: Wait because this HELPED so much. My results were so pretty.

YAP: I dry my hair with the fan at night

Patricia Ysabel: does this work for short hair like mine?
