CORRECTION: In the video, I meant to say Polyethylene Glycol as an ingredient to avoid! NOT PROPYLENE GLYCOL! Polyethylene Glycol is classified as a developmental toxicant,” which means that it may interfere with human development. In any case, do your research!

Thanks to bbappzz98 for pointing it out!

Hey hey hey!

We are back for another video and today we are taking it back to the basics. How to properly wash your hair. I feel the way you wash, really sets the TONE for how your hair routine goes. If you are washing in all kind of ways, everything else becomes difficult. Deep conditioning is a pain AND It has hard to detangle. So do yourself a favour, and wash your hair correctly.

NOTE: Even if you use a shampoo alternative, I would still recommend you wash in sections.

Hey you guys welcome back to my channel, it's your girl, Jen chieh, and we are so laying these makeup looks. Aren'T we today we're going to discuss how to properly wash 4c hair and, if you're, thinking that it's a basic topic it is, I want to have like a little mini series on my channel onload, a basic haircare, how to wash how to dip condition. I already have a video on how to moisturize basic hairstyles that you can do. I think understanding the basics will really help you in your hair journey, especially if you're struggling or, if you don't know where to start. You don't know what you're doing with your 4c hair. I think these videos are actually going to be very beneficial, so that's why I'm making them so if you're interested then keep on watching before we get started. However, don't forget to hit the subscribe button in the bell, so you get notified every single time. I upload a new video. Also kindly follow me on Instagram, where I post all my makeup, looks outfits more haircare tips. So if that sounds like something you'll be interested in, follow me on Instagram all right. So, let's start by discussing why you should be washing your hair personally, I think it's a great way to press that reset button, so you can clean your hair, clean your scalp and provide a nice clean environment for your hair to grow into, especially if you've been Pounding products and moisturizing you here all week putting heavy moisturizers, but with oils you really want to wash those out and start fresh shampoos live oils and dirt from your scalp. So that's something you want. This is why you should be washing your hair. Also. I would like to add that water is the best moisturizer. So when you go about washing your hair, it's a good way for you to also moisturize your hair with water. So you should be watching your hair all right. So now let's talk about products and when I mean washing your hair, I don't just mean shampoos. Shampoos is one way that you can wash your hair, but you can do clean masks. You can do mod washes, you can do conditioner wash. We can do henna. You can do clearances, there's so many different ways for you to wash your hair. Personally, I don't judge. I understand that natural hair is not one size fit all. It'S your hair, do what works for you, don't follow somebody else and don't let somebody else bully you into using something that you don't want to use so wash your hair in the best way that you want to wash it and the best way that your hair Responds to with that said, there's a few ingredients that I think you should stay away from and at the top of that list is sulfates. Sulfates are chemical detergents and technically this is a bad thing. They are very effective at removing oils and dirt from your hair. In fact, I think they're too, effective sulfates can be really harsh on your hair and your scalp stripping it of its natural oils, so I would stay away from selfies. Okay, like take my word from it, I have used sulfates and for the longest time I just thought that my hair hated shampoos, so I stopped using shampoos entirely back in the day, just because it would strip my hair so badly, and my hair will always be Left extremely dry and extremely tangled, so I just thought you know what shampoos enough for me. So I tried different types. This is why I don't judge I've done. The mud washes. I'Ve done the co washing only methods, I've done the water only method, so I've done a lot of different things and then I realized that I didn't have to use sulfates. There are alternative to sulfates in their shampoos that doesn't have sulfates in them. So stay away from sulfates, whatever you do, okay stay away from selfies. Unless, unless you are clarifying, I have to put that out there. If you do wan na clarify your hair, that's when you should use a sulfate shampoo, because it's going to strip your hair and everything yes, but you don't need to use sulfate every wash day. So, if you're watching you here every week, you don't need it. Oh and I should clarify, get it, I should clarify. I only use clarifying shampoos about twice a year. I don't use them, often at all. That'S what I really want to strip my hair of all of its oil just to really like reset everything. If my hair is feeling a little like gunky, I guess, but I don't feel the need to do that very often just because I wash my hair weekly, I'm interrupting our programming to show you what sulfate does to my hair. Recently, I cleaned out my Beauty room found this shampoo that actually fell all over the place. There was a lot left in it, so I was like. Let me just use it and finish it up and look how dry it made my hair, you can see it. My hair has it slurry stuff and it feels dry. It feels rough. It instantly gets matted. So now we're gon na try another shampoo. This one is sulfate, free and, of course, we're not gon na use that other shampoo there. I am massaging my scalp and you can tell the difference. My ends are not dry and my hair is not dry, it's not stuff and it's not matted. Other ingredients to watch out for or parabens parabens have a similar composition to hormones in your body. So you don't want to mess around with that also fragrances. The reason why I stay away from fragrances is: what does it already mean? What is a fragrance? What is it made of? I feel like companies hide behind fragrances that word fragrance and you don't really know what it is. You don't know what's in there, so I kind of stay away from fragrance. If I can it's not the end of the world, but you know yeah, you know, propylene glycol is another one that I would stay away from. Basically anything that you can't pronounce. There are better alternatives. There are natural products that you can use and there are semi natural products you can use. I just feel like using harsh chemicals to wash your hair. You don't need to all right. So, let's get into the methods, I think that's the interesting part. So when it comes to washing your hair, how you wash your hair is extremely important. First of all, before you hop in the shower, you should be pre cooing. I say it all the time, especially if you have dry 4c hair, just try it out. Pre poop. Personally, I prefer, with almond oil, it's a penetrating oil that also coats my strands. So that's the reason why I use it. I heat it up put it all over. My hair use a plastic cap most of the time I do it overnight, so I previewed the day before I wash my hair, so I don't wash my hair without pre pulling. I really try not to, and that's simply because you know, shampoos have the tendency to strip your hair. That'S this job! That'S what it's supposed to do so having a pre-poo treatment before you shampoo. It really helps with that. So your hair is not going to feel really stripped. It'S not gon na feel matted. It'S not gon na feel really dry when you get out of the shower, so I really recommend you to pre-poo before you shampoo, and also when I pray poo. I section my hair. This is my next point, always wash in sections. Okay, don't do like Becky, okay, you don't look like Becky and you don't have Becky's hair type. Don'T you like her you're gon na, do like me, wash your hair in sections. Trust me. It will save you so much trouble later on, especially when it comes down to detangling your hair, but I just feel like it's quite effective, you're really working through each sections and you can really wash your hair and your scalp so really try to wash your hair In section you don't need to do small sections like I do. You can do medium-sized sections, you can do four sections just try to wash your hair sections. It will really help keeping your hair stretch. You'Ll have less knots, you'll have less tingles, it's just fun. Once you pre-poo, you have your sections and you're going to start washing it sections. The next thing to do is to apply shampoo to your scalp. That'S how I do it. I don't find it necessary. For me to put a shampoo on my hair strands, I focus on my scalp because that's really what I want to get squeaky clean. I put the shampoo in my hand, and I massage my scalp gently with my fingertips, not my nails. You do not want to create cuts and tear on your scalp only use your fingers. Some people like to dilute their shampoos to put it in an applicator bottle and focus only on the scalp. If that's what works for you, you can do that as well, but I don't find that it's necessary for me. After I'm done massaging my scalp, then the lather from the shampoo will naturally go down my strands and that's how my strands get clean. So my entire hair and scalp gets clean. I just don't put shampoo directly on my strands and then you twist it up and move on to the next section. When I'm all done, I rinse it all out and I always always always follow with a deep conditioner. We'Ll talk about that next time, how to properly dip condition, what to watch out for etc, but right now we're just gon na talk about washing in terms of frequency. How often should you wash your hair personally, I do it once a week on average, you know what I don't always wash my hair once a week. I know a lot of people ask me, and I always tell you guys I wash once a week. I really try to, for example, if my hair is like this, so I have these mini twists in mini twists, so I have these flat twists in. When did I put those in its going to be about a week since I did my hair and I did not wash my hair last weekend, so it's go to be two weeks by the time I wash and I'm okay, with that, it's like giving my hair A little break, that's cool with me, but my hair still looks decent. I don't find that you know I need to take it out yet I don't want to take it out yet. So I'm not going to I'm just gon na deal with my hair next weekend. On average, I say I wash my hair once a week, but I just sort of played by ear. Sometimes, if I don't feel like washing my hair, I'm not going to. I always say it's better to postpone your wash day than to rip through your hair and being bitter while detangling your hair. It'S not worth it says all right, so those are my tips when it comes to washing. You hear pre-poo washing sections put shampoo on your scalp, only massage your scalp with your fingertips and let the lather go down your strands afterwards. Twist, your hair up runs deep conditioned sounds super easy, but when it comes to handling your hair, just always always handle your hair good care so that you're not creating more tangles and breakage, then necessary. I hope this video was helpful. Thank you so much for watching. If you have any questions, leave them down below and I'll see you guys in the next one bye

justedominique: you're always so thorough when it comes to these 'how to' videos! i appreciate it so much!

Kikelomo Omofaye: Oh my gosh when I finally listened and started washing my hair in sections! It made a world of difference. No more ripping through my hair because they all married each other

eunice: ‘Don’t do it like Becky. You’re not Becky, and you don’t have Becky’s hair type.’ YOU CAME FOR ME WITH THAT ONE okay okay I hear you

PHUMUDZO PRISCILLA SILIGA: As for "don't do it like Becky does ,you don't have Becky's hair " i died also because i realised I've also been doing it like Becky... thanks for the lesson

Claudia Grover-Cofield: You're hair is really growing. I love how healthy it looks.

Kayla Smith: I lowkey needed this video earlier today when I was washing my hair lol but I will definitely keep all of this in mind for the next wash day

Tshenolo Molokwane: its been about a year since i started growing my hair, your videos have been so helpful and i always learn something new with each upload.. also super happy that the YouTube algorithm puts your videos first as soon as you upload. cant wait for second year of hair growing i dont have it figured out yet but ill get the hang of it eventually, thanks again for the uploads.

bbappzz98: Propylene glycol is a humectant and quite good for the hair... synthetic ingredients are quite good for your hair as long as you do you research and know what is what.

Tiarrea B Just Doing Me: Hey Jen. Great video. Excellent job helping us 4c girls out.

Charlotte Roberts: Thanks Jenn, I am going towards the light now when it comes to washing. I want put shampoo on my strands anymore but focus the shampoo at the root. When I were going to the salon, it was how they used to do when washing my hair . I know better now so I will do better . Thanks!

just a random girl lol: 2:22 ingredients to stay away from : sulfates (strips oil from the hair) 4:51 parabens , fragrances 5:45 pre poo especially if your hair is dry ! 6:48 wash your hair in sections

Elaine Lewis: Hi Jenn, I especially love your wash day and how to moisturise your hair videos. Can you use your mixture on hair extensions and how long does the mixture keep?

Breanna Hall: I’m never washing my hair the same again! Trying this method out

Soca Addict: Tried this process today. Fastest wash day ever...... Thanks!!!

heyfranny: If you're a natural don't wash like Becky, wash like Jenn. You better tell it madam!

PreppyFay12: I think knowing your sebum production is also important. A great way to check is to recognize how often you can go between washes without your scalp being on fire haha aka in need of a wash. If you feel the need to wash your scalp more then once a week then you probably have a high sebum production aka “oily scalp” once a week normal and past a week or more drier or dry scalp. I have more of an oily scalp and my hair starts to itch and need a wash every 5 days like clockwork so that’s why I wash my hair once a week or every 5 days. I can prolong this by spraying water + ACV on my scalp but depending on the style my hair is in it can ruin the style so just something to keep in mind hope this was helpful.

MsNaturale Michelle: Great video. Thanks Jen. I didn’t know almond oil was penetrating? I thought there was only 3 (coconut, olive and avocado oils??)

Khadija Fall: Hey Jenn i really appreciate your work thanks for all your videos love you so much ❤️❤️❤️

Sandra McDaniel: I love your content. I enjoy the explanations for why you are doing things a certain way. Also, the fact that you insert pictures so you have a visual reference of what you are talking about has been very helpful.

Chanté Adams: I finally received my Imonatural leave in and hair and body Creme (strawberry and vanilla) yesssss sis!!! Thank you so much for the recommendation. So bomb!!!! Also grabbed Mello Hair’s growth serum :)

Unika Dance Events: DON'T DO LIKE BECKY! YOU'RE NOT BECKY! Sections!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, that hit my soul. Why am I washing my hair like the head and shoulders commercials! My hair is too long and the tangle and knots its outrageous- I'm losing my hair You saved my life (my hair life!) I appreciate you

CC H: Love ur content!! So helpful...Thanks a Bunch!

Cha Ndo Mav: Your advice works on my hair. Thx for the video :)

Deidra Austin: How long does your hair washing routine last?

Miss Bee: I would love to wash my hair in twists, but my twists always unravel. When I tie anything on the ends, it gets tangled in my hair during the wash and I have to cut it out

Esther Anning: How do you moisture your hair in this style (super cute btw )? I am trying to moisturize as often as possible, but I am struggling to keep my flat twists neat at the same time

Thembi Mogala: This is beautiful, it's important to learn what your hair likes and dislikes.

Laurice Lifestyle: I started pre-poo about 2 years ago and I noticed the difference from the first time. Thank you.

CeCe Parks: My hair is so damaged and unequal that sectioning is always just a nightmare. It also takes so much time... I wish it could be "fun" but the longer I spend under the shower wet and cold the more frustrated I get

Life Of Imgorgeous: so after taking a style down such as braids , do you suggest finger detangling before actually washing hair ?

Bridget Odums: You're so beautiful and thank you for these tips, I'm finally getting my hair on track

Hanshandini NEKO: Thank you for this video. You speak slowly and clearly and I can understand very easily (I'm not a first-English speaker). Thanks for the tips!

rachelmiaa: Tyyy for the tips!!! I didn't know I should put some oil first before wash dayy. Can't wait for you're next vid

Yihanna Johnson: I need this to wash my hair.

Deidra Austin: Jenn: Don't wash like Becky Me: I wash like Becky I really need to stop and try it this way.

Mia: The one person who's hair is pretty much the same as mine. And I think you're the only person who I trust. I'm on this journey with my hair and I'm giving her the love she deserves❤

Lo Wiley: Hey guys I just wanted to ask a genuine question I’m about to start my natural hair journey and I ordered this Indian clay hair mask off Amazon. Does anyone think this will work well with my hair?

Yolanda Watson: Love this makeup look ✨

Neosoul_prima: Sulfates aren’t bad for you people! Especially when you’re towards the lower end of the porosity scale, and heavy handed when applying products! I also feel like this information was great, but we must remember that the ingredients in shampoos are only activated through friction! If you don’t, it’ll eventually lead to build up, dried out, and brittle ends. Plus more breakage. Imagine trying to wash dishes without scrubbing them first. All of the oil and grease won’t come off.

CharmW: Your hair is similar texture to mine.. really enjoyed hearing your tips, which I will give a go myself

mzamie247: Wow I didn’t know I should section my hair while washing it. I noticed when I section my husband hair it was less work in the end and then I wash my own hair all at once and I come out of the shower it’s not straight and tangled up.

Enidan Simpson: ‍♀️‍♀️‍♀️ when I was going cosmetology school they said hair should be wash as often as it gets dirty. So my hair only get washed once per month If it’s lucky. And it feels healthier and I’m able to retain more length.

Tina D: Hey JJ, I have one question please please help.you seeoils lie rosemary, castor, lavender etc. Do you oil your scalp everyday or once a week. At the moment I am not oilingbut I do a hot oil once a week and use LCO method ( Shea moisture black castor oil/ apple cider plus leave in conditioner I use) and rice(with fenugreek sometimes) water. My edges are growing and I guess the rice water is doing something. Otherwise I am just catching up. Any tips please. Many thanks

Monica the Beautiful: Tips start @5:45

Irene Willis: Thanks Jenn for the content helpful as usual

𝑙𝑎𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑒♡︎: I’m happy that now Ik I’m not the only person when I take out my hair and it’s stiff

Kennedy Vincent: Washed my hair earlier and took me 6 hours!! I'm soo mad!

Ashley Smashley: Hi Jenn, I need your help. My bestie has 4c hair and is suffering from cancer. It's been way too hard for her to was during this time. She has not washed or brushed in 2 months. She is new to natural hair and I am a white girl. Can you give me any tips on washing and caring for her natural 4c hair? Thank you

Jasmine Padgett: May be basic but still much needed. With my kinky hair, as it gets longer detangling is becoming a nightmare. Thanks sis!

LadyJacqueline07: First time commenting on one of your videos, wonderful content by the way. My hair looks like that with my shampoo, so now I know that I am using the wrong one. What is a good shampoo that does not have the sulphates and all the other ingredients that you mentioned?
