I'M going to tell you exactly what i did to grow my once very short and thin natural 4c hair to waist length in this video. You need to keep watching hello and welcome back to my channel new growth nachos. If you're meeting me for the first time. My name is samantha, i'm a natural hair specialist. On this channel, i post videos on how to care for your natural hair diys and how to style your natural hair as well and in this video i'll, be sharing with you exactly how. I grew my once very short and thin natural hair to wasteland, and this video is a bit different from the others that i've been doing, because previously i've been showing you how i grew my clients here. How and i've been showing you and telling you about tips on how you can grow your hair out? Actually, in this video i'll be showing you pictures of when my hair was shorter, the growth phase and the different transitions that i made telling you about the setbacks and also telling you exactly what i was doing on a weekly and on a monthly basis to retain My length that i grew and let me let me say this - my hair grows very slowly like it took forever to get to wasteland, but i'm happy and i'm giving god thanks. It did get there and i'm even more thankful for the lesson that i've learned along the way. Sometimes it was a bit frustrating. Sometimes it was a bit overwhelming for me, but i'm grateful for those experience, because now i have it i can share with you. I can share with my clients, and it usually works for everyone, regardless of your texture, so just continue watching this video to the end, and i promise you by the time you get to the end of this video you'll, be thoroughly informed on ideas on how to Care for your natural hair to get the light that you want. Not everyone wants long hair, but at least you want healthy, thicker hair, whatever your hair needs. It are. Let me know in the comments section and i'll do a video for your specific need. So without further ado, let's jump into my story. Let me start this by saying i love my hair, regardless of the length it was regardless of the texture i have by the way i have 4c hair. We know that means it's really. Coily tend to get really dry and behave like yeah. I love my hair, but it was always short. It was always very thin. It never seemed to grow past a certain length, no matter what i did no matter what products that i was using on my hair. So back in 2011, i believe is 2010 2011 they're about i started learning and trying experimenting on different stuff to grow. My hair. I tried black, castor oil. I tried so many different remedies that i saw on the internet as good for hair growth back then i don't believe so. Many persons were going natural. They didn't understand so much how to care for their natural hair. So what i actually did was actually pray about. It yes, i prayed about it, because i believe that there's a god in heaven that created me. That cares about me, and the word of god says that there is not a strand of hair on my head that he doesn't know about, and if he knows all those detailed information about me, i think that he must care about my well-being. You must care about. My hair, the way it looks and everything that's why i put it there in the first place, so i asked god to show me exactly what to do to grow my ear out. I wanted it long. I didn't want to become an idol, but i wanted my hair long. I didn't want to put in any extensions in my hair. I didn't want to look like other people. I just wanted to grow longer, hair from my scalp. I pray, but you know, faith without work is dead, so you prayed. No, i needed to go on and did my research. I went online and i did some research. I mixed some different stuff. Try it on my hair and to me at first the image that i got was like. If you use a certain product, then your hair would grow really long fast. I quickly discovered that that was a lie. You know, and i discovered it the hard way because i actually tried each and every one of these remedies that i saw online and i wasn't the typical person that tried it one week and said: oh, it doesn't work. I tried it for a period of time and i realized that my hair wasn't growing any faster. Any thicker like what they said happened. So i discovered that products don't really make your hair grows faster and i was using products for the wrong reason and in the wrong way. If you understand what i mean, so what i actually did was starting to do protective styling, and my protective styling of choice was first two strand twists. My hair was very short and i liked the way two strand twists looked on my hair, seeing that my hair was so thin and so short. But then, as my hair got a little bit more body, i discovered plaques or braids whatever you call it. So i started braiding my natural hair at first when i started braiding my hair. It couldn't pass like two weeks or three weeks because it got really fuzzy and you start looking messy and i am used to keeping my hair really neat. I, like homemade, my hair, grew in my hair, seeing it very neat i was fascinated with here overall, so i always take it down redid it, but i realized that, even though my hairstyle lasts me for like three weeks when i lift my braids, i could see Where it grew from the skull, but yet i wasn't seeing any increase in my lens, so i started researching that. How is that my hair is growing at my hair? It wasn't getting any longer and that's when i discovered that i was retaining in length. So it's not that my issue was that my hair wasn't growing. You just thought my hair was so dry. It was so brittle, so it started breaking off. So it doesn't matter the amount of glue that i got from the scalp area. It was breaking from the ends and breaking terribly because of how dry it was, how weak it was, and all of that so now my research was not so much geared towards getting hair growth or stimulating hair growth. It was more geared towards retaining length because i now recognize what my issue was: it wasn't growth, it was length retention and, as soon as i discovered what was causing my hair to break what was causing my hair to fall, what was causing my hair to become So stagnant or look so stagnant, regardless of how much protective styling i was doing. I fixed the issue, and this is what i did. I started doing deep conditioners before i didn't know about deep conditioners. I typically just wash my hair condition, my hair and oil. My hair and the next time my hair would get anything else was on another wash day, so i didn't know about deep conditioners. I didn't know that i should continue moisturizing my hair, even when i having a protective style and, if you're curious, to know what i did the type of deep conditioner i use on my hair. I did diys because at the time i didn't think a lot of natural hair products were were available, so i did mostly like avocado molasses right bananas, i'll link the videos in the description of those, because i did some videos on that. Also, i think i'll leave some cards somewhere up here for you to click on. If you want to see how i did those deep conditioners, so i started doing deep conditioners. I realized my hair was a lot moisturized more softer. It was more pliable and then i realized that my hair, even though it wasn't breaking so much, but i still was seeing a lot of hair coming out, and that was a cause of concern. So the sooner i learned that, when taking down my braids or protective cell, i have to be gentle, and that was the biggest mistake to prevent breakage. The first thing i started doing was: keep my hair moisturized doing deep conditioners, and then i recognized that i need to be gentle. I couldn't just take a comb and rip through my hair, as opposed to before i was just taking combs combing up my hair like this, because you want the hair to pull out. But i started just using the paint picking away and then i'll use my finger and detangle, and that way i recognize that i was retaining length and of course i was excited. I still think think that my hair wasn't growing as fast as i wanted it to so. I started going longer with my braids, so i started waiting a whole month and two months now, i'm doing actually three months with my braids in and when i'm doing three months with my braids in, i learned the hard way that i had to redo my edges. Simply because my hair tend to pick up a lot of length, whether from your clothes, your pillow case wherever, but the edges tend to pick up lint and once your hair is grown out. Once you have all those shaded hair tied up with the oils and the lint in that airline, once you're ready to take it down at the end of three months, it's going to be hard, it's going to be locked and it's going to cause a lot of Breakage, so what i started doing like every two to three weeks into my three months: hair growth challenge i'll normally redo my edges to make sure that i don't cause any undue breakage at the end of the challenge and that's how i really retain a lot of Length on my knit area, my neck area is even longer than some areas in the middle and the sides of my head. Yes, i kid you not, because i've been taking very good care of it. So basically, what i've been doing is braid my hair over the years i braid it. I do other styles from braids, but i quickly go back to my braids, like i tend to give the braids a break like if i did a three-month braid now like for two one to two weeks. I wouldn't do anything to my hair, but probably catch it up in one, but i still do a protective style twist. All the ends. Pin them under do some cute bantu knots, something that you know it's different from braids they're, giving your hair a little break. But it's still protected. I don't do styles like twist outs, curly, styles and so on, and if i do it, it's just for a one-off occasion where you want to look chick. You want to look cute fine, but i don't do it to wear for a week or two weeks, because i know my hair can get really dry once it's dry, it's going to be tangled once it's tangled, no matter what products are using it to detangle it. I'M going to end up with a lot of breakage, so i tend to stay away from those styles. I'M not saying that you should do the same thing. I'M telling you how what works on my hair, my personal experience with my hair. So over the years as i continue to braid my hair, i researched more and i learned more and of course i went to cosmetology school. They didn't teach me much about natural hair. To be honest, they teach you the basics in regards to hair how hair grows. The proteins are hair knees and the growth cycle and everything you know that aspect of it, but it was more scared to persons with straighter texture, hair, styling and so on. So you really don't get that deep information about how to cure natural hair. Most of the things that i learned was off the internet. Doing my own research experimenting with my hair and then afterwards i went to another school. You know to do basic, trichology and stuff like that. So i learned a lot about ear, anatomy and natural hair in general, and my dream is to really open a natural hair institution for persons with my ethnicity. To know about. You know to be just be aware on how to care for your natural hair, because the need is there, and i think that person's heart of the wrong impression as it regards to natural hair, because they tend to think it's too thick. They can't manage and so on, but if you find the right products, the right regimen, you know exactly what to do. Yes, it is hard because it takes time, but once you have the knowledge it becomes a lot easier. You know exactly what to do, and life is just better. So basically, over the years i started very short and then it started getting really long gradually, person started asking me what i was using to make my hair grow, and that was very sad for me because i realized the same mindset that i had back. Then i thought it was going to be like a miracle product that was gon na make my hair longer is the same mindset that i'm getting on my comments on my videos. The person see me on the road. Is that your hair, how you grew it so long? They don't expect person with foresee here well, my tics are here to really grow along, and i have to be saying to you: listen, it's not a product, you don't need a product. Well, you need product product. Has its place, but it's not a product that is gon na, give you a miracle growth overnight or for a week or for a month. It'S consistency. It is having a regimen, it is sticking to the regimen. It is learning your hair. What you hear like what you hear, don't like learning: how to manipulate your hair learning, how to just relax, see your hair and leave it alone. So many things i've learned over the years that has really helped, and the sooner you learn that, like the sooner you know that listen, no amount of product that you use on your hair is going to cause your hair to grow. Miraculously what you need to do is build a constant regimen that fits into your daily, your lifestyle that fits into your hair type. What works well for you, because what works well for me may not work the same for you, based on your schedule, based on your curve pattern based on your scalp issues, whatever issues that you may have, but you need to find out exactly what works for you. You need to stop breaking if your hair is breaking stop breakage, because no matter how slow your hair grows. This is the thing that you need to know. On average here grows like half an inch per month, there's 12 months in the year, so you should be getting like six inches per month. Normally we go trims, so we probably take like an inch off for the whole year or if you had setbacks, your hair started breaking and stuff like that. If you're able to retain at least four inches out of the six that you get per year, calculate four times, seven years or eight years time, you'll have really long hair. So the focus is really to retain the length that you are growing. Some person's hair grow a little bit slower, so you get less than a half an inch. Some person gets almost an inch for the month. I kid you not some persons based on genetics, their hair can grow that fast. But if on, if your hair is growing at an average rate or a little below average rate, you can still retain a good amount of length per year and as long as you keep retaining these length over the years, you'll end up with long hair. If that is your goal, if your goal is healthy here, you just need to deep condition. Your hair, be gentle with your hair, pay attention to your skull, pay attention to what you hear like know, your hair porosity and all that jazz. I hope this video was helpful for you and i'm saying to you i'm going to share with you more pictures, but i hope this video was helpful for you to understand that products are not while they help with growth somewhat. For example, if my hair, my scalp, is damaged and my hair is growing at a slower rate because of health issue because of lack of proper environment, it's just like having a plant, it will grow to a certain length based on genetics. But if it's lacking nutrient in the soil, when you put a little fertilizer there, a little water or whatever it's lacking, it starts growing healthily. That is the same thing with your hair, so where growth and product is concerned, if your hair is not growing on average, based on your genetics and based on how it should grow, then when you put the products it will help to stimulate the blood flow. It will help to feed the follicles and then you'll have your average growth that you're supposed to be getting per month, and i repeat, there's no miracle products that you can put on your hair, no matter what it is. That will give you massive growth overnight or for a week or for you know, but over time gradually do you

Rue Gweredza: Pray about it Do your research Understand that there is no miracle product Protective style (twists) Moisture is key and take care of your ends Retain length Deep conditioner,(she did DIYs) Be gentle Stay away form styles that won't help your hair Make sure you stop bad hair habits

NAzikiwe: This is so helpful! I'm glad to find someone who is growing out their 4c hair without relying completely on wigs/fake hair. Also all the natural hair stylist I've met in my area (New York) can't seem to even take care of their own hair so it's nice that you really know what you're doing as a stylist from your training, research and personal success.

Leone Ranger: Great information. A natural hair school is exactly what the world needs, for real! Proper education for personal and professional use

kizzie kente: This was very very informative! I am learning and trying to grow my granddaughter’s 4C hair. She is the only one in our family with this type of hair and it has been a struggle. Not because she has 4C hair but I’ve never had to encounter it. I also can appreciate you praying as well and I will do the same. I pray 35 times a day lol but never to ask The Most High to help me with my grand baby’s hair. THANK YOU!!!

Tanya Davis: Yass! Prayer works because I didn't have a clue going natural either, yet all throughout my journey the spirit guided me on what and what not to do. I've actually learned how to care for my hair the way it is naturally and not all straightened to death lol

Wadzi's World: This has given me motivation! I've been stuck at shoulder length for YEARS so thank you for the advice!

Z: Love everything you said! I agree with it all. I was doing mini braids too, and it was helping my hair retain length, but I like to change my hairstyle too much...you've inspired me. I'm braiding my hair right now and i'll try to stick with it for at least a month. I'm going to ask God for help too

Kaykayss L: Yess also I grew out my hair by keeping away negative thoughts and words towards my hair. When I stopped calling it short and ugly it grew like weeds

Selina Barua: Well said sister, God does care about you and everything concerning you, even your hair.

Sophia Jones: I look forward to your videos soooo much! Thank you and God bless you! I’m learning a lot. I’m enjoying my hair growth journey after chemo and made your DIY Ginger and Rosemary treatment. I can’t believe how the thin and bald patches are slowly starting to thicken and grow! As you say, consistency is the key. Plus I’m learning about my hair. Blessings to you and your family and I pray your vision and dream of opening a natural hair institute comes a reality in Jesus’ name!

HISWil143: You've never lied. God is constantly giving me protective style ideas. Won't he do it‍♀️

Nichole H: I completely agree. Really curly hair, especially 4b and 4c hair, wants to be left alone. I keep my hair twisted and achieved bra length hair when I was treating it poorly. My hair routine has greatly improved (a lot of Ayurveda, finger detangling, deep conditioning, moisture in between washing and updo styles) and now my hair is too my butt when stretched.

Woman Of God: Firstly, I want to say Thank you, thank you and thank you again for this video, it has given me a lot of encouragement. My hair has been natural for about 6 years and I have not achieved 'waist length' or much length at all. My goal is not waist length, but thick, healthy hair reaching the middle of my should blades. I am in a temporary state of alopecia and I am praying, praying and praying!! So glad that you mentioned prayer, your channel has given me hope seeing that you have achieved your goal, I know it will be possible for me. You have a committed fan in me.

Deborah Taylor: Thanks for this very informative and practical video about hair growth and retention. I'm grateful to hear you express the truth about how hair actually grows, and to also emphasize the power of prayer in this process. Be blessed!! ❤

Simply C: Proud of you my Jamaican sister ❤

YouTube Addict: Love this. Found myself getting a bit emotional also coz I’ve been struggling and feeling disheartened recently at the little length I’ve retained over the last year and another YTer I just watched mentioned leaving her P styles in for 3 months also and how much it helped her get to waist length. Thank u so much for sharing ❤️

Susan: Samantha i can just relate to your videos. I have been at neck lenght for longer than i want and was even told recently that it wouldn't grow because i didn't have the genes for it. You are one naturalista that encourages me alot. Thank you

vonnie pothos: It's really nice to see someone who had been struggling with hair land everything that you said I can relate to I have had short hair and mom was shorter than yours all of my life I've been natural for over 20 years and so it's good to see this video into know that you really don't have to go out and buy all of these products it's just about consistency and leaving your hair alone and figure out what your hair likes when it comes down to maintaining your hair to be more stir eyes and that is my biggest problem finding out with my hair likes and what it will accept to be moisturized I thank you so much for this video and patience oh my goodness I have none but I have to learn how to have patience ‍♀️

Z_ Loro: Yess!! Open up a natural hair institution and represent us curly hair girls rooting for you!!

Boosie Dlamini: First of all, EVERYTHING is possible with GOD And also ,I LOVE your accent Sis!❤ And thank you for your honesty, I hope God continues blessing your hair journey and you in general.

Tynisha Howard: Hallelujah to the type four girls we struggle with our hair but prayer works!!! New subbie here!!!

Patricia Allen: Hi Samantha, I know this video is 2 years old, but it still resonates with me today, as a recent natural with 4C hair, I recently came to this very same conclusion so my aim right now is healthy hair and if length comes, so be it. thanks again for this video.

Keisha Johnson-Samuels: Really good talk. I agree with everything you said. Products help us to retain length not to grow the hair faster. Hair growth rate is genetically based

Ifeoma Nnonyelu: Someone shared your video with me. Now I’m subscribed. Love love everything you said! And yes, God cares about us and even takes account of every hair strand.

Alice Barton: Samantha, i thank you so much for informing me about caring for my hair. I am trying to grow my natural 4c hair too. I have been watching you and following your instructions and I'm getting results. Thank you sooo much.

Islandslim Ting: Vegetable glycerin mixed with aloe vera juice combined in a spray bottle has been life changing for me. I spray it only once a week because it makes 4c hair extremely soft and too much will make it break off. Other moisturizers don't usually bind to my strands but this seeps in and is very useful when taking braids down because it causes your hair to be soft ie no breakage.

ebere chigoo: You've said it all. My hair grows so fast but doesn't retain length. It made me to start disliking my hair to the extent that I wouldn't want to hear people talking about natural hair I felt so frustrated . but it comes to a time when I went to God in prayers and God began to prosper my hair. Honestly products couldn't help me but God can. Now I started liking my hair. I came across Water Only Method and that has been a life changer for me. My hair feels moisturized thicker even though my hair is thin strand. With God all things are possible.

Jasmine Collins: Hey Sam great video thank you. I'm trying out some of the things you do and many persons have been asking what i've been doing but i've discovered that doing less really brings out better results for my hair.

Kerine Dixon: Hi Samantha am inspired with your videos I just started to watch your videos from last night,am so interested in your videos, because of the Journey of your hair, I used to wear extension braids but now I'm going natural I see where I'm losing a lot of my hair so I'm planning on doing the hair challenge because my hair needed help

Kushemererwa Daphine: This is the most honest video i have watched on growing hair. Just aim at growing healthy hair, be gentle with your hair and let the maker take you through. You just cant rush it. Thank you for sharing

Symone Howell: Amazing. I believe everything you said. I have a daughter whose hair began to grow like crazy. She was very gentle with her hair and stuck with a regimen like you said. Love the way you put God first ❤

Joy Banks: After listening to your talk, I moisturized my dry thristy ends.

MarNichole: I really like the idea or concept of praying about our hair. The analogy used was perfect. He is concerned about our wellbeing

Priscilla Oyewole: Thank you so so much. You are an answer to prayer. I have really been wanting to understand why my hair just didn’t grow thicker and longer. Plus, I think I have a 4c hair because your before looks like my hair now. I plan to devour your page. Thank you again and again ❤️

Maxine Burrell: Solid advice and totally agree. My daughter has 4C hair (you are hair twins). With a consistent regimen, and know what products, oils and DIYs work best for her, I have retained at least 8inches over the past two years. Pictures to follow, if I can add them. A new staple is your famous Leave-in Butter. Love it, so does her hair.

K Rob: Gorgeous hair styles. I love DIY hair masks too. It is important to learn your own hair for length retention.

MASQUERADE°: I love everything you said, so truthful. It makes a whole lot of sense now. I am definitely following you ❣️❣️❣️

Jenny Bravo: Thank you so much! Jamaica needs more women like you! Idk why but this video really spoke to me, I’ve watched tons of videos but I think I’m really going to focus on retention, praying & not products! God bless you ❤️

Francesca Jones: You talk so much sense. After viewing your video on moisturising hair, I am gonna concentrate on that and deep conditioning, and patience. Thank you so much for sharing.

Sammy Ytube: Protective styles for months braiding her own hair and touching up the nape/edges, moisturizing during protective styles and being easier on her hair when taking out the braids; giving hair 1-2 week break before next braiding. Braid as protective style always works. preferably I use extensions to maintain neatness and since I don't have desired length. But so true that the moisturizing during those 2-3 months must be done daily or every other day. I am getting better at not putting extensions on edges of my hair which is a look that I have to get use to and having super long braid to middle of your back which the weight of it does nothing but pull and add tension to the weaker part of your hair. For me that's the edges and the middle of my hair. I don't dare add extensions to those parts. Just use the braids from other parts of my head to cover it up. A lot of work, but decent length in a year.

juliana Amaki Osei: I had natural hair for so many years and it never even passed neck length so I cut it and decided to perm instead. But now I've watched your video, I'm going to start natural again with your method and see

Ebizzill: I spent 10 years battling with dryness and I spent alot of money especially those from black businesses and my hair kept breaking off and not being healthy. i did the whole kitchen remedies too, 9 years ago my hair HATED aloe vera, now my hair loves it. It just takes time. Also, I never straightened it, only blew dried it once, and I keep my hair in braids 99.999 percent of the time. I get better results now with under 7 dollar dove or l'oreal products from walmart as opposed to the 18 dollar camille roses main choices and others. Sad.

DaisiesandPandas: My hair grows 0.5 inches a month and I've never seen it past 6-7 inches in all of my life. Unconscious damage is a serious issue. I started growing my hair in mini braids almost 4 months ago and, and I've almost got 2 inches more, but until I get past that 6-7 inches then I'll stop holding my breath and finally admit I have found the key to length retention. Funnily enough I used to protective style with kanekalon hair at the beginning of my first journey and with gaining 2 inches in 2 months with just mini braids I'm realising I definitely didn't need that added hair, in fact.. it might have be setting me back.

WLHMC ALLNATURAL: Wow wow , the remedy is praying , oh my goodness l love you already, put God first in everything. This is the best video ever

Karen Johnson: The best natural hair advise I’ve heard on the internet, honest , real and truthful, God bless you to prosper and open that Natural Hair Academy

ajwa boateng: Beautiful hair, thanks for the tips! xx

Khrys-Ann Josephs: Thank you so much for sharing your journey I appreciate this video a lot and your channel is so helpful. ❤️

senorinadi: Thank you for the info! Gorgeous hair!!! I pray you open up a natural hair care academy and train others how to properly take care of our hair! Come to Seattle, Los Angeles, and of course in the beautiful Cayman Islands!

Joy Nosa: This is the exact video I need. Thank you

Cici: Amen sista. I love the fact that u contacted God first at the beginning of your journey

Lola Simor: Prayer, why not. I'll just say, that I've been natural for at least 25 years, been through the whole YouTube videos and yours is honest and very true.

Tulie M: Thanks Sam, this is very encouraging. I'm shoulder length it seems like it's been taking forever

Donna M: Very informative and inspiring thank you and prayer is so powerful

Eunice Odiase: What scalp and hair moisturizers do you recommend for when your hair is in box braids? Blessings.

Mo Sim: Watching your videos inspire me to truly care for my hair. I thank you. God bless.

BABALWA LANGENI: This is the first video i have watched that has really helped understand all about hair growth. I believe you when you say no miracle product will help grow your hair, it's all genetics

Keimee Rocque: I like your style. And I can do identify with the “shampoo-conditioner done”wash day but now I am trying. Keep inspiring us. ❤️

Esther's Word: I follow your suggestion about leaving my plaits longer and moisturize and I've surely seen growth...just need some more thickness thanks Sam

Ami Sora: I recognize myself on many steps of your journey except I m taking care of my hair for only 5 months and it was like a growth explosion
