I’m Robin James. My YouTube channel is a destination for men’s grooming; looking at hair, skincare and fragrance.

I make videos showing how to achieve different hairstyles and haircuts; exploring grooming products; and reviewing men's fragrances.

Now these are my top five hair clays and by the end of this one, you're gon na know, which is the best for you, hello, hi. How are you i'm robin welcome back or welcome to my youtube channel this little world right here is a man for himself. If you like, hair product reviews, grooming, skincare, fragrance and videos like this very one, then chances are yes, you are going to love it around here. Please do press subscribe right now? Okay, so this is episode. 7 of my hair products guide series really a deep dive into the world of hair products, helping you to save money and also to find the best products for you. It'S all about that. I do the testing i do the spending you can just watch and think hey. That is the best product for me, and this one is all about hair clays. I absolutely love hair clays. If you're wondering what is a hair clay, then a hair clay generally has either kaolin or bentonite or both as some of these products do, and they are sort of earthy components and ingredients that should give the hair a mat to a natural. Looking finish, and in terms the hold, you can tend to get anything from a light hole to a medium hold or a stronghold, so that doesn't really help you. But i do have various products in this, and but what does help you out is a haircut can be used by anyone and there is a product here that will suit you now straight up. This video has been sponsored by geology. Geology is personalized high efficacy, skin care that anyone can use if you're a newbie new to skin care. Then this will work for you if you're someone who already has a skincare regime but wants to kind of check back on it or maybe evaluate the products you're using, then you can also do it. But the great thing about this is: it is personalized. You can head to their website click on the link. In my description, you can take a 30 second quiz. It'S going to ask you about your current skincare regime. If you have one it's going to ask you for any skincare concerns spots or acne, or maybe even dark under eye circles, and then it's going to create a routine regime for you. The easiest thing to do is the 30-day trial it's going to give you four products a face wash a morning face cream an evening face cream and an under eye cream. It'S going to tell you how much to use and when to use it, and if you do like it, you can do a subscribe and save really to save you money, but also have those products sent out on a regular basis or you can do the a La carte, so if you just want to top up on certain products, you can do that there and if you use the link in my description down there, you can save up to 40 on your first order, which can work out just under one dollar a day. So really it is very low risk and if nothing else do take the quiz. Okay, the first product in my top five - is the aveda grooming clay. This one is best for light definition. I say it's light definition, because this is very much a five star product. My eyes great ingredients, great brand, easy in easy out. It'S water-based. It'S also got kaolin in it, which is the type of clay and but that is near the bottom. It'S really creamy in consistency and sort of texture, but this well will help to add just a little bit of movement to your hair um. It is a light hold, so it's not going to give you that really strong hold, but it is matte and finish some of the comments i've seen on manfrottomself.com. My website have said that some people don't like the smell, but it's a little overpowering. It is fairly sort of herby herbaceous, it's very fresh, but it is scented and some other people have said that it is that light hold so light hold matte finish, but a really great product and if you do have sort of curly or wavy hair - and you Want to make more of that a little bit this product into your hands and kind of scrunch at the hair, and it's just going to help to give you that definition. The second in my top five is kevin murthy rough rider, and this is one of the highest rated products from you guys and from me on manfromself.com. Now this is best for gritty texture. It'S got gritty texture, because if you look into the ingredients this one is oil-based, so it's going to be slightly harder to wash out, but it does have diatomaceous earth now. Diatomaceous earth is an earthy clay-like type property, but it is going to give you loads of this really great sort of gritty movement and texture. It can feel quite sand like so if you've got quite limp hair or you want uh to add just a really great sort of movement to the hair for an everyday look or a big quiff, then this could be the one for you. It'S around about the 22 pound mark or about the 30 dollar mark again always on manfrotto.com. If ever something goes into the sale. I ring a bell it pops up and i also let you know on instagram stories, but really great product and absolutely one of my favorites number three in my top five is patrick's m3. Now this has got both bentonite and also carolyn. It is wax based again much like the kevin murphy, but this one is best for hold really great hold, really great texture, not as much texture as the kevin murphy, but this does have a really good hold. Also because it's got bentonite bentonite tends to swell the hair, so it makes the hair look bigger, there's another product in this um top five. That also does this. So if you've got slightly fine or thinning hair look for ben tonight in an ingredients list, it really should help and it smells amazing - quite an earthy patchouli scent but expensive, 40 pounds 60 dollars, but a great product number four in my top five - and i should Say it's not like five, four, three, two one: it's just a top five is shoe revival, american gardens - and this is fairly new to me. But i've been using it a lot. It'S also man from self.com and it's very much a five star for me, and this was created last year in 2020 they had some old formulations and they kind of worked them together and they created this now. This one is best for a matte finish. This truly is matte. I'Ve got this in my hair at the moment and actually in terms of hello in terms of the finish, this can actually sometimes make it look quite dull, so you don't have a lot of light in it. So if you want a truly matte finish, then this is great. Also, the hold is a sort of um good to strong hold. It'S certainly not light it's staying in place and it does have a really great hold. Also sheer revival fantastic brand. I love them. You'Ll have seen the review just the other week on easy tiger pomade, if you've not seen it make sure you check it out and but they're so great. In terms of ingredients, 99 uh naturally derived ingredients. It has water-based. What'S got aloe at the top aloe uh awful joke, and so it is water-based and it's got caroline in it and also, i think, a really great price for this. It'S right about the 23 dollar mark or the 20 pound mark. Again. All of these are on mamfromself.com and you can filter by clays. You can filter by product ratings by you guys and product ratings by me to really help you find the best product and my final one in my top five is moroccan oil, texture, clay and this product was in kind of my most used. I think for about two, maybe even three years running, it's a great price point it's around about the 16 pound mark 20 mark, and i think this is the best for all rounders. Really. The best all-rounder also bent night again is at the near the top of this. It'S a water-based product, but it does have bentonite and bentonite again great for swelling the hair. So again, if you've got fine, flyaway, hair or maybe you've got thick hair, but you just want it even bigger. Then you can use this. It'S really great. Also, the texture is very true. Lots of products might say they're, texturizing, clear or texturizing something or texture, texture texture, but this one is texture. It'S quite smooth. So don't be deceived by that. But the finish is matte. It'S a good to stronghold, not nearly as strong as the m3 or the kevin murphy, but it is a good, strong, hold and just fantastic for all hair types again, another really highly rated one on man from self.com. I know that you guys love it and i just think it's a fantastic product. This must be like my fourth one of these. It'S just a product that, if i'm not sure what i want to do with my hair or i'm going to have something during the day and then into the evening. This is a good product to do that, an all-rounder and really very versatile. So there you go. That'S my top five in here clay. I know that there will be comments. I'M sorry um that say i can't believe you missed this in a brand battle. You said this was the best and this and this and this it was so hard for me to get a top five. I literally went through the website. I went for my products boxes over here and just was like. I love you and special shout outs. I should say to like arcadian, make great products and lock hearts. I'Ve got fantastic, matte clay and hansa vehicle claymation was one of my first ever products and i think a really great clay and one that i still use who else um? Oh there's just so many i'll link them down below but do check out the clays on man from self.com and also please do press subscribe. If you still not press subscribe, the button is just there there's. Also, more video suggestions down there stay with me and watch them. I'M gon na give you the hair clays section there and some more videos in the cards up there, but until my next new video, bye-bye

Robin James: Got a favourite? See the 23 clay reviews on the MFH website here: https://manforhimself.com/product-tag/clay/

Brian Kop: For me, my favorite hair clays that I am using currently are Cavalier clay by Blumaan, Lockhart’s fire and brimstone version of the hair clay (which only sells during the fall), firsthand supply clay pomade, and Daimon Barber texture clay. These products all behave what a clay behaves like and they all give me great texture.

HotShiznit: I absolutely love the Morrocanoil Texture Clay! I came across this brand through your channel. What I also love is their heat protection and mousse products. Fantastic company. I'm definitely going to try out the products you mentioned in the video, as well. Great video! And thank you for introducing me to Morrocanoil!

S Al: Great stuff, Robin. I noticed that some clays you've rated highly in previous videos contain petrolatum/petroleum jelly, but none of the clays you recommend here do do (as far as I could tell in a quick check, I could be wrong) I have read that petrolatum isn't great for the hair and was just wondering if this factored into your decision-making at all. Many thanks.

TheFederer9999: Hi. I used to use Revlon "Creator Matt Clay" a lot. However Revlon has discontinued it and its replacement is called "Matt Clay" (its a pink jar now). But the formula is completely different and now it feels weak and as generic as any other hair clay. What I really liked about it was that it left my hair with a "dry and sandy like" texture and sensation with good hold from the moment I applied it to my hair, even if it was damp. Its been years now and I cant find a similar replacement. I have tried products like Calymation and Baxter Clay Pomade, but all of them feel smooth and more wet. Does anyone have any similar product suggestions?

Sunny Goodman: I'm totally loving this series, fantastic work Mr. James

Cameron Ivey: I’m crossed between 3. I currently use ocean clay and love the feel, texture and gives a good natural shine to my lighter color hair. Which of these 5 would be close to that? I think you’ve used ocean clay before.

Alejandro Berrios: For my hair, my favorite at the moment is American Hardens (Shear Revival). I’ve not used the first three clays listed in this video, I’ve struggled to find certain Alexa products here in the states and the Kevin Murphy and M3 aren’t necessarily out of my price range but they are more than I’m willing to spend on a clay when I get fantastic results with both Shear Revival and Morroccanoil. But in my experience, the American gardens makes my hair look the thickest (I have very fine hair) and the morrocanoil has just a bit more shine (still a matte product though) than the American Gardens does, so while I’d recommend both, for me, American Gardens could trick someone into thinking my hair is actually thick, it’s definitely more dense and textured to the touch than the morroccanoil, which is more similar in texture to Shear Revival’s Northern Lights paste

Anish Gawand: Hi Robin, Even I have fine hair type but a bit wavy when it grows out. I've been using Arcadian Clay Pomade & it works great. Adds a matte finish & Kaolin swells my hair to some extent. Hold is also a medium or say firm. Haven't used a product with Bentonite in it so planning to buy the Moroccanoil Clay. Hope it has more swelling effect & easy to apply like the Arcadian.

Aimen Fatima: i decided to chop off most of my hair a couple of years ago and your channel has been so helpful in learning how to style my hair now and what products to use

vitor_8889: For me its Baxter of California Clay pomade and the Morocconoil texture clay. I find that the Baxter clay gives me perfect combination of slickness, texture and natural shine which I really like and amazing hold. And then when I want to have more "loose hair" with more texture and movement, I use Morocconoil. The only slight drawback from the Morocconoil is that I find it feels slightly dry in the hair especially after e few hours, where the Baxter seem to hold better on the touch and in shape. But for me its the perfect combo. I also like Kevin Murphy, I find that its probably one of the best second day hair products. Like if I have oily hair, nothing can beat Kevin Murphy in dealing with that imo

Tamas Menyhart: You have to try the Oasis Clay from Templeton tonics and odin wax cream.. It'll blow your mind away

Stevie G: Thank you! I'm new to haircare and in the process of growing it out. I have a few old aerosol mousses that I use only because I have them.

Doki Leros: Robin, sometimes when I use the Morocconoil texture clay I find that i struggle to run my hands through my hair to style it. I warm up the clay in my hands before use, then after a few times running it through my hair my hands become really tacky to the point where i cannot style my hair. Any thoughts on what I can do to make applying the clay easier? Great vid as always!

Venom Wolf: Respect for making us know how long is sponsor segment. You are making quality content! Good job man :)

Dustin Grove: What are the strongest hold, matte finish products you have tried? I usually use stickmore styling cream, but it is out of stock and I haven’t found anything similar in terms of hold/matte finish to control my thick, wavy hair. I’ve tried Stickmore Clay Fiber, Arcadian Matte Paste, Cavalier Clay.

Ryan Wilcox: Hi Robin, love your videos. I have really thick straight blonde hair, I tried Hanz de Fuko and find it can look a little greasy, or just doesn’t hold enough if I use less to make it look more matte. What do you recommend as a good medium for both hold and matte? I’ve been considering a powder or matte fibre, what do you reckon?

Dew It: Moroccanoil Texture Clay is AMAZING. Smells great and it makes my hair feel so soft and smooth while also adding A LOT of texture

the elusive meme: What's your favorite type of prestyler when using Moroccan oil texture clay? Or do you use multiple prestylers when using it? I have fine hair as well. This channel is incredible btw!

Hamza: Hello. I'm 23 and I have fine hair. I can see my scalp easily when I run my fingers through my hair. I was searching for a solution and I found your channel. I wanted to ask a question about Nioxin system 1 and 2. It says progressed thinning on system 2 but I don't think my hair density is too bad but I have hair loss. When I take a shower and use shampoo and conditioner I've got so much hair on my hands and long ones too so I don't know what to do about that. Also I moved to Japan 2 years ago and after I moved little pimples started to appear on my skull. It itches and they do not go away they don't heal I don't understand why. So I wasn't sure which one to buy. This kills my self confidence because my hair doesn't look alive it looks dead. I'm sorry I wrote too much. Plss help me...

Vinoth Kumar: I love morocconoil texture clay always. It did justice with sea salt spray

Pascal We: some nice choices but for me its definitely missing morris motley styling balm!

Ari Blair: Wondering if you might give Lockhart's Trancend Wax/Clay a try, it's one of those really interesting products that you just can't seem to find the reviews for on youtube anyway. I went ahead and ordered some myself but I'd love to hear you thoughts on it someday!

Adam Hoover: What do you use on wet hair to boost volume or is that done with the volume sprays?

A.D. Mathur: What should I use to keep my hair straight? My hair are completely straight when out of shower but curl up when dry.

Franklin Fuertes: I’m always hoping my clay might make it to one of these one day :)

MrRavsta88: I’ve tried the majority of these products especially M3. It’s greasy and doesn’t have any hold in my opinion. I have thick hair and hanz De Fuko is still my go to product. I’m surprised that wasn’t in your top 5

Na Na: Hairshark is an amazing hair powder for volume and thickness

Bjørn Bjør: I have used all 5 and no one would be in my top5 so different is taste

nutmalone: Moroccanoil texture clay is incredible

Vineet Nishtala: I have relatively flat hair that is fairly long and I’m getting into styling it at 18 and I was wondering if layrite cement clay is good or not because I’ve heard good things about it and I kinda want to try a look where the side of my hair doesn’t poof or like poke out

step3094: hi Robin i just discovered your beautiful channel ... could you tell me what the difference is between silver Fox by vilain and blumaan cavalier hair wax? I have tried all the waxes of the brand by vilain except blumaan so I ask you ... in your opinion between blumaan and by vilain who wins?

GeeDee1810: Nice video, but I think you missed the best clay of them all: Dynamite Clay by „by Vilain“. It‘s by far the best clay on the market. Also, Hanz de fuko‘s Claymation is an absolute joke, worst product I ever tried (no matte finish at all).

Lucas Turner: Does your hair have to be dry to use a clay or can you put it in damp hair?

Arthur Avagyan: This video couldn't be more on time for me, huge thanks and keep up the good work. Also maybe you'll consider refreshing your "how to make hairstyle?" videos?

Abdul Malik: Alright. This is my first comment here. First of all, I really appreciate what you're doing here Robin. Thank you. So much. Now to this problem of mine, it'd really help if you understood this because, I can't. I got this (silky?) Straight Hair which do not curve at all. They always drop to the front no matter how much I try to push them to the side naturally. I've barely used a hair product and am not knowledgeable enough about it. I hate my hair tinkling my forehead and I need something to keep it away. Robin, please. What do you think can help me?

GrowingDownUnder: After all these years you still haven't made a video with the best hair clay of all time, Muk hard styling mud...it's called mud but it's actually a matte clay

Inspiring Ink: What would the best product be for a high hold with a shine (non Matt finish)?

Gurdeep Singh Syan: @robinjames really admire your channel since 5 years... man I got fine hair what hair clay shall I purchase out of this 5?

Shaalen Bindal: Hey Robin, what about Hanz de fuko Clay? I saw your video on products to use for thinning hair and bought the products you mentioned - Nioxin Shampoo and conditioner, Nioxin thickening spray and Hanz de Fuko clay.

kevin: i rarely used clay and my shear revival product has been there for about 2 years, it dries and feels different from the first time i use it. how you preserve hair product and is it safe for use after along time? you have alot of hair product, have you?

Johnny Guzman: What’s a good one for a messy look ?

Kevin Yee: Great list, thanks

Shahriar Shakil: Hey! Greetings I have been watch your videos since the beginning and I really love them. Could you please help me with choosing the best hair clay for my hair condition? I have soft thin hairs. The volume is less. I do gaming a lot, so after using headphones for so long, my hairs got some intense wave at few surfaces of my hair. I can't fix it no matter what which looks really irritating. I want either to add good volume to my hair, and give them a straight shape,(hold) without those waves. Or I want to backbrash them perfectly (throughout the day). N B : whenever i try to backbrush my hair, my hairs get wavy and goes different direction when they dry up. And I prefer non oily clay! Thank you so much.

@islamquranandsunnah: @Robin James which product you recommend for beards? clay, pomade etc etc thanks saj

John: I use hair clay but I often get the problem where hair towards my forehead doesn't stick with the rest of my hair and does its own thing. How do I fix that?

Marcelo Mendonça de Souza: Hi, Robin. What’s The best water-based clay for hold the hair? What’s the most strong one?

JackaL: I have a drawer full of products…but I always go back to rough rider, which is reliable and really the only hair clay you need.

Wade W. Wilson: As a person who tested well over 400 different hair products and try many of the same ones you have and probably many of the ones you haven’t I disagree I think that 4 or 5 of those clays are more of a matte natural finish not format I would say the only one that really is a full match finish is going to be the MoroccanOil Texture clay

Brian: Moroccan oil is definitely one of the best

Win: wonder when the Davines molding clay review will up? I think this clay very great for fine hair as well.

Jake Norton: HELP!! I have thick hair that im trying to push back (like slip back but not clean look with a comb, more slightly messy). Struggling to find a product that will hold it back without it popping up and creating a large pompadour sort of look after a few hours. Preferably want a product i can rework through the day so it doesn't set solid (but will accept this if this is the only thing that will do it). Anyone got recommendations of products that may work? Thanks in advance!

YG: what hairspray do you recommend for fine hair?

Lucas Adams: Hello robin, you got any recommendation for some budget clay? I’m a college student that can’t spend much on hair product but want to still look good when college open back up :D

Colin Mccall: Dominate is good for short hair because it's non greasy and doesn't make your scalp shiny

Colin Benfield: Aveda smells great. Vetiver and spearmint what’s not to like?

dee: Can u make a video tutorial about styling hair for absolute beginners thx

lupehn: Which one for long thin fine hair with a strong hold

John T: Are you rating these products according to what it does for YOU only? That being the case, your recommendation are tailored to a specific audience base only.

Adrian Calisto: Im wondering whats the best oil based hair clay without bentonite. I have pin straight coarse asian hair. Water based mess up the foundation of my style, anything other then clay is too shiny to my taste, pomade or gel makes my hair way too spiky and unpliable, super strong hold products and wax based tend to somewhat cure which takes away the malleability and bentonite would make my hair too voluminous.

LINTU SOORYA: Do we have to wash it off before bed everyday with water or shampoo?

Lucci Sosa: Any vegan or clean ingredient clays?

Dan Colombian: I have a don Juan hair clay , it's quite hard to apply it on my hair , it's sticky and everytime I use it it pulls my hair and I end up with many hairs on my hands . What is the best way to apply it ?

Minh Vũ: Top 5 matte paste please

MURPHY: Why is Morris Motley's Strong Matte Styling Balm not on here?

Gurdeep Singh Syan: can Hanz De Fuko Quicksand replace the above clays?

Umida: Whatzup Robin? You know what, recently remembered you. Went to my hairdresser, who is really good at coloring, she feels the tones like nobody does and styling....buuuut she's quite useless at cutting...well, in a nutshell having my hair in ponytail now after her cut

Michael Jones: Please review shehvoo pomade! Would love to get ur opinion

Big-T: Blu Maan Cavalier Clay is the best!!

Carter: Morris motley for top 6

Jordan Ebacher: 5:12 you say that it's bentonite clay that swells the hair but I just watched one of your videos right before this one when you review salon guy clutch clay and you said that it's kaolin that swells the hair... So which one is it??

alles im grünen bereich: Hi Robin can u do moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream Please i want to see if its worth the Price

HeyDanHay: What about Hanz De Fukl Claymation? I have short thick hair at the moment and love the clay I use!

Артём Тукай: Thanx for your videos!

Sunny Mehta: Hey plzz robin suggest me i'am little bit confused due to thinning and silky hair plz do suggest me good one ☺

Yeah buddy: Any new hair style you thinking of.. Going shorter.. Or grow but longer again??

Antony Aw: Hi Robin, any recommendation for Asian hair?

Sarthak Sugam: Hey bro give a review on moroccan oil hair mousse

v9 vohque: hey bro can you pls tell me the best product to get wavy hair i save super straight

paul: Have you tried lodestar ?

Lucien De Rubempré: Please review Dick Johnson Fibre Wax Insouciant , will ya?

Evan Terng: The American gardens was a 100% vegan I thought

respeezy: Thanks for the reviews my homosexual friend.

ProfessorSnake: I want update video about Top 5 clay

Submersed24: I have zero sense of style Thanks for the help! Also why are gay dudes always so good at style related stuff? I literally don't trust anyone elses opinion unless they are gay or have a british accent

Conor W: Hey Robin, its the Irish guy you met in Victoria park the other week. Just saying hello and hope I didn't freak you out haha

Thomas milje: I love Kevin murphy ❤

Ater Abid: have u tried Brickel products

GamerVideos Aruto Hiden: I love Patrick m3, robin

Omar R.N: How is your face so freaking symmetrical

Cody Chen: Did you just say "kevin murthy"?

Daniel Purcell: Bought some Kevin Murphy Rough Rider and it's sooo greasy and hold isn't good. Flat. Not impressed with that stuff.

Donke: No Hanz De Fuko anymore??

Atkins Paints The World!: diatomaceous earth is what you use to kill bedbugs, its scratches them up and then they dehydrate and die, so Im not sure its such good thing to have in a hair clay tbh...

What’s Up with Native english speaker OM: Hows hanz de fuko Quicksand ?

Captain Rogers: Why is blumaan not in the list?
