Hey so what's going on, i'm super excited for this video because we are talking about relaxers perm, sodium hydroxide that might be inside of your hair care products and every once in a while. I will be a request on a very scary or hazardous looking ingredient in a hair care product, and today we are talking about sodium hydroxide. What is it, why is it in there? Should you be concerned? So stay tuned? Okay. So what exactly is sodium hydroxide number? One, it is an inorganic chemical compound and it's classified as an alkaline ingredient, meaning it is not acidic. It is not neutral, it is basic. It'S pretty high up there um. It can range between 10 and 14, depending on the solution and like most ingredients in the beauty industry. A lot of these are multifunctional, so sodium hydroxide, you might find it in the cleaning industry. You might find it in the food industry for processing food you'll, find it in the fabric industry for processing cotton. So it's very multifunctional and we know it very, very well as the key ingredient in relaxers, it's known for straightening, curly, hair and basically because that ph is so high. It has the ability to lift up the cuticles enter into the hair, break the disulfide bonds and it's the disulfide bonds that are held together. That gives us our curl pattern and the structure of our hair. But when they're broken that's when the straight hair is achieved, i will say this: i believe that you can have healthy relaxed hair. Before i was natural i would relax for a very long time. My hair was very healthy, so i'm going to put that out. There really quick, but even with that, why is there sodium hydroxide and hair care products, so i was saying how some ingredients are multifunctional. The same thing applies for sodium hydroxide and hair care products, so more than likely, if you see sodium hydroxide and a hair care product, that is not a relaxer, it's probably in there as a ph adjuster. Now, if i was creating some type of serum for the hair or cream for the hair, but the ph is too low. All right, like let's say it's like a two or three now mind you, the ideal ph for the hair is 4.5 to 5.5, but as i'm formulating this serum, i'm getting a 2 or 3.. So what i want to do is add a little bit of sodium hydroxide to help to raise that ph just so, i can get to the ideal ph range of the hair, so it's great as a ph adjuster. On top of that is known for activating gels, some gelling ingredients are ph dependent. So, for example, if the ph is not ideal for a certain gelling ingredient, you won't even have a gel you'll have like a liquid but adding just a little bit of sodium hydroxide. To help to raise that page up a little bit will give you the gel texture that we know and love from my eco styler, gel and other gels as well. Now, as far as like you know, should you be concerned, let's say i decided to formulate a hair relaxer and i put sodium hydroxide in the formula at let's say five to nine percent like i was like i'm making like a regular relaxer and a strong relaxer At nine percent, that formula is going to straighten your hair hands down. Now. Let'S say i decide to put a hair, moisturizer or some type of hair care product, and i do sodium hydroxide. Let'S say i use it at 0.1 or 0.001, because sodium hydroxide is in there at such a low amount. It'S not going to straighten your hair, it's not going to cause any harm to your hair because it's in there as such a small small amount. So hopefully this brings some reassurance to you guys if you happen to see sodium hydroxide in any of your products. Typically, this ingredient will be not at the top it'll be like way down at the bottom. So with that being said, i hope this is super helpful. You guys learned something new. Of course i have a question for you. What are some other ingredients that you know you consider scary or hazardous that you've been seeing in hair care products you kind of want my take on. Let me know comment below and i look forward to joining the conversation with you be sure, to check out the curly girls guide to hair care ingredients. If you have not done so already, i have a link below for you to check out and if you're interested in starting a haircare around no matter where you are in the process, you can work with me one on one i'll link below for you to check Out as well all right guys, i love you guys so much and i'll see you guys soon. Bye,

Michelle No: I love how your videos are straight to the point and no fluff!

jojobootsey: If you haven't already, can you talk about isopropyl alcohol in hair products? That would help me greatly.

Aaliyah Haughton: There's a lot of talk about DMDM Hydantoin at the moment. I'd like to know if this is actually dangerous or not?

A Marie Jenkins HisBeloved: I basically look at the first 10 to15 ingredients in hair products looking for either hydrolyzed wheat protein or flaxseed. I have a sensitivity to both. I have seen sodium hydroxide in some of my products but it is near the end of the ingredient list. I, too had very healthy relaxed hair. As always, great informative video.

My-Yoshi: I keep reading about a lawsuit or something around DMDM Hydantoin and how its unsafe and causes damage when used. It's in a LOT of hair conditioners. Conditioners I thought were safe/good.

Miss T: THANK FOR THIS!!! I was horrified when I saw sodium hydroxide in a few products. I was hoping you would address it. I ❤ your straightforward approach.

Kurtisha Marie: Are there any “good” silicones, sulfates, or parabens for hair? I tend to avoid these at all costs but if there are “good” ones i would be able to flex a little. Thanks!!!

Adrienne Figures: Thank you so much for keeping us informed in this natural hair community! I do have a question about baking soda and ACV mixture for treating alopecia that could have come from to much acidity or alkalinity. What’s your take on it? I want to ask before I decide to do it. I’ve done research and I’m leaning towards it but I value your feedback first! ❤️

RaeLaRoux: Can you go over formaldehyde in keratin treatments? Actually can you just do a video on keratin treatments In general? The pros and the cons? ✨

Blackberry- Rose: These some interesting facts never knew this ingredient is commonly used as a Ph balancer. I’ve often wondered about products containing alcohol, and synthetic ingredients.

SuperApril34: I'd love to know more about lanolin and other non vegan hair care ingredients because my daughter and I have lanolin allergies.

ElegantPaws01: Congrats on over 200k subs. Love how informative and succinct you are.

Promise Nokuthula Mwale: I love love love your content. Your voice is so soothing. Thanks for educating us. ❤️❤️❤️

Sable 711: But what if they are lying as to where the ingredient falls in the product. I used a deep conditioner once and really felt like my hair had been straightened , it really frightened me. And, though hair can be healthy with a relaxer , what about the scalp and is it really possible for the chemical to seep in side of the body by way of the scalp and can chemical burns cause alopecia? Glad you tackle this topic , I have not seen any other influencers doing so.

S Parker: Love your informative channel! I'd like to learn more about harmful hair coloring ingredients.

Fayie Jones: Thanks for this, am really loving the these uploads. They are so informative and helpful.

Mesiah: Can you talk about parabens because there has been lots of fear mongering about them in the natural hair community

Fly Away: Always appreciate your content, no fluff, useless info. Thanks for the education on caring for my locks.

Leanna Rose Joy: Hi, I really appreciate the content you make, have been learning a lot. Please discuss dmdm, it's on so many labels (I'm writing from India) and a lot of confusing opinions regarding this. Somehow no one ever answers this question (is there a reason for that). I hope you will be willing to discuss this subject. Looking forward to more of your content. Thank you.

Keke: Does it matter or have any effect when it’s in soap? Some of these natural shampoo bars use sodium hydroxide for saponification

Thankful and Grateful: Amazing video and very educational. It would be great to get your take on hair products containing parfum near the top of the ingredient list.

Margaret White: Once upon a time, there was a brand was putting sodium hydroxide into their shampoo. Hair was natural and so soft, then after months of use, I wanted to flat iron my hair. After blow drying with heat protectant, my hair was hard, stiff. The sodium hydroxide was in the middle of the ingredient list. I have also read labels where calcium hydroxide was in products. That was seven years ago and many brands have changed their formulas. Thanks to you tubers who answers everyday people questions.

SuperiorVibesTV: Another great video , very helpful, thanks !!!

fruitypebs23: Education is gold. Thank you ❤

Norasia De'Yana: Can you talk about the effects of using henna long term on the hair?

EmrldTeddy007: Very informative, as always!❤️ Please talk about DMDM Hydantoin. Is it a carcinogen?

georgiapeach310: Hey, propylene glycol is one that I’ve wondered about since I have read that it also is an ingredient in engine coolant/antifreeze.

graysjonz: Can you please talk about DEA? I remember all that fuss about ecostyle using it and then a bunch of folx cancelled eco but I never really knew the science behind it. Thanks for the informative videos!!

Nap Freedom215: Amazing video!! I make handmade soap with sodium hydroxide which is a must in soapmaking. Resulting in wonderful soap after the saponification process. Thank you for your knowledge.

Laura Williams: Can you do a video on why natural hair products can cause itchy scalp? Ever since I went natural my scalp gets itchy a lot faster and I have to wash my hair more often. I notice this even more whenever I used the oil products.

Patricia Koroma: Another great hair topic. Your video are truly educational. I am so grateful to you for the video you did on scalp. Watching from London, UK.

Tammykins True: Would you please review Palmer's Cocoa Butter Biotin line? Despite the positive reviews and appealing online ads I have viewed, I am concerned about the fact that most products in the line contain isopropyl alcohol. Also, their Coconut Monoi shampoo & leave-in conditioner both have sodium hydroxide AND calcium hydroxide in it. Would you please review the formulas in both their Cocoa Butter Biotin and Moisture Boost Coconut & Tahitian Monoi lines?

Nyima Juwara: could you do a video on DMDM HIDANTOIN? and as always amazing video

Tara Lion: Great vid ❤️ I’d love to learn abt isopropyl alcohol in moisturizers and conditioners, and ceramides

shasha p: i would love to see a video on parabens and dmdm hydantoin and whether or not they’re as harmful as people say.

Myiesha: I'm curious to learn more about fatty alcohols in hair care like Behenyl Alcohol and Cetyl Alcohol. Thanks!!

iz.h: I love your videos! And this hairstyle on you is really nice

Marci a.k.a. M. Brigitte Publishing: Great video. Would love to see a video on Keratin treatments please.

Beavera Menzell: Can you go into more details about PVP & gels? Why gels typically don't work well with the product selection of most naturals? How can we tell whether a gel will be effective with the type of products we own?

Sabrina Cambridge: what if you pick a product with sodium hydroxide in it and use it all the time, like once a week as your favorite deep conditioner...would it have an effect on your hair ? i have seen it as high up as ingediant 8 or 9 in some products. Another ingredient I stay away from is diazolodinyl urea, is it bad as well?

Mfon Bassey: Bought Carol's daughter coil enhancing moisture butter few months ago but it smells like relaxer and stinks my eyes, can't figure out what ingredient(s) caused that. Had to stop use.

Sapphire Relaxed Hair: Hi I'm relaxed and my hair is healthy. I have a question about using coconut oil and avocado oil in our hair. This youtuber Cyndoll said these oils are not good for the hair... I also looked up coconut oil and it says over time it can be damaging to the hair because of the proteins that are in there it will eventually allow the hair to be brittle now I've been using coconut oil since 2011 I just recently stop using it before the pandemic because my hair was dry on the ends since I stop using it and I use another oil which is all of oil my ends are not dry anymore. Could you please make a video on these 2 oils :) thank you ever so kindly God-bless you

melanievia: I'm curious about phenoxyethanol , C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, and Cocamidopropyl Betaine (Coconut Derived).

~Daphne Amy's World~!: Right ❤ Can you talk on these ingridents trying. Talk about this in a video discussion Sodium lauryl sulfate Parabens Formaldehyde Isopropyl alcohol Propylene glycol Synthetic colours Dimethicone Triclosan Retinyl palmitate Petroleum Mineral Oil

💎ShayR87💎: Sodium hydroxide is the 4th ingredient in Xtreme professional (the new Wetline) gel Should I avoid this?

Lami Onifade: I was watching this one video from this White or White presenting/passing/adjacent Middle Eastern or West Asian girl about her hair loss journey and she mentioned a story where this White woman figured out one of her haircare products was spkied with the Nair hair removal product. Scary stuff.

T Rem: Which "hydroxide" if any is better for the hair? Calcium, Lithium, etc.

T Davis: Great information, thanks so much!

Jacky Wairegi: Do a video on DMDM Hydantoin. Thanks for this video ❤

Ronel Sorgenfrei: Would Potassium Hydroxide have a similar function?

Tamago: I don't do relaxer but I'm still here to give a view

Ileana Santamaria: DMDM Hydantoin in ApHogee protein treatment, please!!! Thanks for this reassuring video!!

ThatGirlMissc: I need a one on one ASAP

Ms.Vicki Jay: yes sodium hydroxide is in my hair gel and not as the last ingredient so I was very concerned

Cheryl S. Booker: Great information! Thanks!

Roshanda Barriffe: Can you cover a topic about how to take care of hair in Braids? like how often to wash your hair ? Can we deep condition with Braids? Scalp care ? Best products oils, butter, creams and liquid milks to use with Braids? I'm low porosity natural hair 4c Thank you Great video like always have a wonderful day

Claressa Lucas: You should say "A person" or "One" can have healthy relaxed hair. I cannot. My skin/scalp is too delicate and my hair too fine. I love the sun and chlorinated pools. I also don't care to spend more than an hour on haircare per day, nor ANY time in a salon on the weekend. Natural + wash & go = first time my hair has been past my shoulders since puberty; I'm 50. A very large part of that growth and retention is due to your clear, scientifically based advice. LOVE THE CHANNEL!!!

Demetria Thomas: Do you only give care techniques for natural hair? I have permed hair and I do take care of it. I also would like to know more about the best way to care for it and good products for use.

GaBee Alexandera: What is your opinion on Chebe power with Chebe oil to coat your hair weekly for hair growth like the women in Chad do? Also rice water, whether it’s black or white rice, I just wanna know like what you think of it as a rinse and/or a leave in.

Scrubz.N.Squatz: Well I’m relaxed now so it doesn’t really matter at this point lol

Lerato Mabuela: Thank you for saying you can have healthy relaxed hair because it is automatically taken out of the "natural hair " category. Well mine is not healthy, in south Africa we are approaching winter so it's breaking and I already have bald spots, even when I had unrelaxed hair.

Bernice Tyson: elaborate on best way to use natural lanolin on hair ends to prevent breakage and seal moisture

King hill: Love your videos

Lecia: Thank you

Nafisat Suleiman: Can you plsssss do a relaxed healthy hair video, I’m a natural but I have clients who have relaxed hair and I’d love to help them grow health long relaxed hair

N. Nina: Kerarin and I've been thinking of just throwing it but... my money!!!

L L: I love your hair and I love your braids. What type of braids in your hair if you don't mind me asking and how do you care for your hair while in braids

Charlette Hayes: It is good to use henna and indigo on your hair. I am a natural...4c pattern?

Antonia Haute Couture: I guess that’s why gel stretches your hair

Phnixt: Isopropyl alcohol! Please explain this one cause I put all those products down!

Natural Born Queen: Please explain cocamidopropyl, and is it a derivative of coconut. I am allergic to coconut.

Emilee Rubin: Do you recommend henna for faster hair growth and if so which brand?

sweetnyouniq: Propolyne glycol

Candice Famber: Can you talk about the Beautiful Textures Naturally Straight system? I think it's basically a keratin treatment. I think it's an AMAZING product but for some reason, it's pretty unpopular, and kind of hard to find (even pre-pandemic).

Mali Rabbit: Even at a low level, is there a negative cumulative effect of the sodium hydroxide in a product for natural hair? Live long and prosper, y’all!

C Foster: Please do one on Diazolidinyl Urea. I hear this is FORMALDEHYDE! Why would they put this in products? I'm like damn do they hate us that much? It's in Silicon Mix products.
