It'S going on, I'm super excited for this video because we are going to talking about fragrances and, if they're really bad for your hair and if you should avoid them in natural haircare products, so stay tuned. Okay. So the big hoopla is that there is a chemical compound called fourth eyelids, which actually is an ester, and people are really concerned about this ingredient being inside of haircare formulations. Now, what exactly are the phthalates? The valets are used mainly in the plastic industry and basically they help classes to be more flexible, so think of your shower caps that you use for your toothbrush or the plastic cup. That'S in your cabinet right now, things like that. You know, and the issue is that people say that all the caused reproductive issues - it cost issues with infants, things of that nature. So any time I do these videos, I want you guys to know what it comes down to toxicology. How toxic a chemical is. It depends on multiple things, but in this video we are going to talk about exposure, okay exposure. So when it comes to all the things that we're talking about all the bad things when it comes to fragrances, if a stylist and whatnot, but it's typically through ingestion - and that is the quickest and most direct way to be infected by a chemical compound when it Comes to infants, unfortunately, some IV tubes have even hospital equipment that are made out of plastic, will have some valleys in it and, unfortunately can harm infants. Now, in this video we are discussing shampoos, conditioners moisturizers, natural hair care products, and when it comes to the phthalates there is a family of the thiolate there's different ones, so think of it, as an analogy I just read, online is snake. There are different types of snakes, some are poisonous and deadly and then there's some that are just not like little garter snakes. Now, when it comes to the phthalates and haircare products, there is one called diethyl phthalate. That is the one that is huge in fragrances. Now the ethipothala is used as a solvent to dissolve fragrances, so a craze of fragrance that we use in a haircare formulation now think of it as this, when you are making your apple cider vinegar. Now you have your measuring cup or whatever you put it in. You got water as your solvent and you dissolve that ACV mix it up, put it in your hair. That'S the same thing with fragrances. Dep is the solvent the water. If you had different fragrances to make the overall sprayer and solution now, fragrances can be different type of chemical compounds. Typically, terpenoids terpenoids are, for example, lemony. That gives you like a citrusy scent or things like geranium. That gives you like a rose or floral scent. All of these little terpenoids can be dissolved into DEP to create a fragrant solution. Another cool thing about DEP is that it actually helps to bring the fragrance out even more when it comes to our hair care products and DEP, and it's harmful with all that jazz. Now we're not eating or ingesting our shampoo or a conditioner right is mainly on our hair and if it does on the scalp from a shampoo, the scout's is a thick layer of skin. Okay, you have an epidermis, you got the dermis and all that fun stuff. It takes a lot for certain things actually get deep into the skin down to the blood vessels where they actually affect our system, so it takes a lot gon na take place. Now, let's just say by some chance, that DEP does put it straight into the scout. You know into our blood vessels if it does give to our body and turns into urine. It comes out into the toilet out of our systems. Okay, now also, I will say this and formulations when it comes to fragrances as a whole. We typically use at very, very small amounts honestly when I'm talking to people who want to start haircare lines, I always tell them fragrances less than 1 %. You don't need that much. So the idea of you being affected from your shampoo or your conditioner or your moisturizer was deep eat as extreme extremely low. To be honest with you I'll be more concerned about the food that you were consuming the processed food, the genetically modified food things of that nature, that has a direct effect of diseases and things that can be caused by chemicals. You know now, let's say you're thinking. Okay, Tanya great video, but I'm still not convinced and that's okay. Definitely, you know you can look for fragrance free options. However, then that means you need to stop using your shower cap. Your mind is not using your toothbrush and you also want to stop buying perfume and fragrance it smell good. You know, because all that is in there just say alright, so I love you guys, hope you enjoyed this video. I have a question for you, my next video. I need your opinion, I'm thinking about doing the curly girl method, like my opinion of the probably girl method cuz, I have some issues with it. On the flip side, I want talking about butters. So what do you want to know more about? Let me know below I do talk about this and the curly girls got to hair care ingredients. If you have not got your copy yet definitely do so I'll, put the link below and if you're interested in signing up for a consultation with me one on one. You can do that as well, and the link below make sure the certifications are want to stay in the loop and make sure you're subscribed, and I will definitely talk to you guys soon. Alright, bye,

GlamFam Hair & Beauty: Girl I stay telling people about what you put on your body VS what you put IN your body! Lol it’s crazy to me that amount of people that will insist on all of this from hair products, and turn around and eat highly processed foods loaded with dyes, chemicals, and GMOs. I’m so glad to hear someone else address it so a few less people can stop thinking I’m crazy for telling them the same thing

Fo Adunni: For many of us that are sensitive to fragrance, even the small percentage of fragrance in hair products can cause sinus problems or be debilitating.

V. F. Edge: Keep up the GREAT work and stay encouraged. Jesus is Lord AND risen! Also, I really wish companies would use LESS fragrance. Some are just plain nasty smelling and others are loud and way too much of a so-called good thing! Fragrance is personal and in cosmetics should not overwhelm. JMHO. Thanks!

Lizbet PCB: I’d love your take on CGM, and whether sulphates, used once every couple weeks or so, will wreck curls patterns, or just harm the hair and scalp in general. But, butters are something I should know more about, definitely! I’m no help,

Arianne Riley: I had a really bad reaction to a perfume when I was in college in 2014 and broke out on my skin where ever I sprayed it. I regret not going to a dermatologist at the time BUT I haven’t had a flare up since then because I haven’t used perfume directly on my skin since then. Companies can have their own formula for what “fragrance” means as an ingredient so that makes it tricky to assess if it’s the fragrance that’s the issue or a combo of ingredients.

Evryting Kriss: I'd love to hear about the benefits of various butters for our hair.

Tiff Monique: Can you do a video on the pros and cons of using grease and butters? I found that grease is better for my hair than butters. Also a video on putting baking soda on our hair. Thank you! You're videos are always so informative!!

1922mistyblue: I like a nice smelling hair products. Naturally Free is a good brand for those who do not want fragrance. I am doing the CGM mostly so I would enjoy learning more.

ladiejb: My young daughter's scalp had been itching for a couple years. I couldn't figure out why after I would wash her hair, or she went to the beauty salon and had her hair washed she would still start tapping and scratching her head. We decided to start locs and the loctician used eco style gel. Soon after I noticed a loc start to fray at the root, and she was tapping her head again. I was so stressed about the situationan and prayed. The answer I received was " find something without fragrance". And it worked! After scratching for a couple of years...No more. Fragrance free has worked for us and I'm confident that her issues was due to the fragrance In the product we used.

kacewill: Thank you for the amazing information in these videos. I've been natural for quite a while but I don't know much about the CGM. It feels like there are so many interpretations on CGM. It's confusing. Lately I've been trying to break through a plateau (& frankly some boredom) by learning something new.

L8ter Ivy: I just binge watched like 10 of your videos. Love your channel! Seriously ❤️

Natural Since Birth: Wow! Great vid!!! I'd vote for the curly girl method. Not too many curlies and kinks talk about that method anymore.

Christa Is Joy: My goodness. I'm just in love with your page. You are amazing and valued. Thank you so much for your informative content. ❤

Maina Dahlia: Hey Curly Chemistry, first, thank you for all the knowledge you are allowing us to get !! Then, I have a question... it's not related to the video but I've heard that since hair is actually dead once it grows out of our scalp you cannot fix it and you can only fix how it look... what is your opinion on that ? Love from France ;) and be brave during this quarantine !

Kelsey T: There you go again givin us all this good info ❤️❤️❤️ your channel. Yes please tell us your take on the Curly girl method. I respect your opinion.

Dulces: I'm interested in hearing about the butters.

HereDianna: I love to smell a good fragrance but as the skin of my face is allergic to it (I ll break out) I only use fragrance free skincare products ( "natural" or "chemical"). Thank god my scalp seems ok but I also use hair care who don't have a strong smell which is difficult to find but not impossible. Because of my allergies I have talked with many Dermatologists who are alarmed by more people coming with thus allergy and even 4% can be too much for many. But I do minimize fragrance as much as I can and also eat non process food. Also the way your skin reacts to "fragrance" is different to the way your skin reacts to it. I can eat coconut oil but if I use it on my skin I ll break out because of its natural perfume... So that can't really be compared like that.

Storm Najaire: I needed this because the things that I use I enjoy and haven't caused me any issues thus far. I'm glad to find you and would like to learn more for my hair to help it

MsJaybee01: Thank you for your clarification on phthalates. Your videos are always so interesting and informative. Please do a video on both topics.

Paula: Great video. I wish most hair care products were Less Scented ! l'm really tried of 4 or 5 different smells following me around for a week after wash day . l going unscented as much as possible. What a relief.

Kyla Maupin: Whenever I wash my hair, the fragrances have me sneezing for two days straight.

Milady: Very interesting! Now I know why products advertise they don't have phthalates. I'm more curious about fragrances and their link with itchiness and irritation in the scalp. I find that essential oils, coconut oil, etc. tend to exacerbate my eczema and make my hands itchy, so I also stopped using it on my scalp as much as possible, but fragrances are in virtually every natural hair product and I find I've been getting more and more scalp itchiness over the years. I've seen dermatologists warning about fragrances and skin sensitivity, so I'm just wondering what the consensus is for people making the products.

caramelcocoa234: Thank you for saying this. I love good smelling hair and I’m bored of lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint. And there are some oils that are just pungent if used neatly. Just got some phthalate free fragrance oils and now I can scientifically back why I use it! I would love a video about butters

marian B: Both...and thank you for this video. I have actually seen organic toothbrushes at Walmart/Target/Marshalls. I have a question regarding the black skull caps...I know you did not ask about it and I don't need a video about it, but can the black dye from the skull cap cause harm to the body? I have washed and washed and washed, and although the dye is not heavy, I may still see some residue. Esp. if I have grease on my hair. Thank you if you can answer this and relieve my anxiety, lol!

Law Abiding Citizen: dang it! I keep forgetting to go grab the book. I just like having hard copies but ill fold on this one. lol. Also Id like to know if its gimmicky for products to offer Length retention products? I just viewed a video on Palmers or Creme of Nature (Cant remember which) Aloe and Black Castor oil product.

Nkem Uche: Very informative as always Would love to hear more on buttera as well

Tywan Brown: Hey I luv to hear more about butters for the hair, I luv shea butter (on my skin) but I use to make a whipped shea butter mix in the beginning of my NaturalHair journey mostly after my BC. Continue to stay healthy and safe

Alexia: I would like to hear about both butters *and* the CGM. I did the CGM back in the early 2000s when it was first en vogue and it was horrible for my hair. I need my shampoos and 'cones, but I would like your take on the method.

Tfran2917: Girl 3 months later I feel like your next vid NEEDS to be on the CGM. You’ve been dropping hints forever about your issues with it and I am now thoroughly concerned. Let’s hear it!

Nadia Pugh: I would love to hear about both but do the curly method first. Thanks for the video very informative.

Bassem Sadfi: But I thought we should avoid fragrances because they might cause allergic contact dermatisis

Benito Camelas: Hi girly , I completely agree with what you spoke about on this video but I was wondering what effect fragrances actually have on the hair itself. In terms of, do they dry out the hair overtime? What are your thought on this ?

Donnetta Daniels: Do one this week and the other next week!

Lucy Benneth: Please talk about both. You are good at this! I could listen to you all day long.

Sharese Nicole: I want to know both! 2 videos please ♥️

DiscoveringNatural: I always learn something new on your channel. Thanks

Bironkè O.: Great video!!! Definitely I'd love to know more about butters

Shortiie: Hey Culry Chemistry loved the video only thing missing is a discussion on irritation due to fragrance. I would like to know your take on the different fragrances that can cause irritation. As someone with severe allergies myself I personally have to go for very mildly scented products and I no longer use perfumes or many scented soaps. I have sensitive skin on my entire body so do you think that the fragrance is the cause or other ingredients? If I use something that doesn't agree with me I will become very itchy and as for my sinus I sneeze or immediately feel pressure in my head from smelling the product.

Gerry Gold: Also what people dont know is.... that Essential Oils are pure distilled Alcohol Oils. The Alcohol in the Essential oil is bad for the hair and scalp. Can you let your viewers know this and the science involved. My hair does not like perfume and alcohol and chemicals in the shampoos and conditioners they take the hair off my head. So I have to go all natural and be very careful with what I use. Thank you. God Bless.

Ashanti Baxter: I am a female & have Fragrance Mix 1 allergy now . I had to change up ALL my skin/body, hair & laundry products off of a 200+ page list from my allergist. Fragrances made me itch terribly all over. I went back to a Caesar haircut because I couldn't find Fragrance Free (FF) products. ***Do you know what type of hair dress/grease/etc. that I can use on my scalp that is "FF & moisturizing?" *If there are none, can you tell me how to DIY since you are a chemist because I am not finding products when Googling? Now I use WholeFoods 365 shampoo & conditioner & a prescription Clobetasol 0.05 % shampoo to use 1x/week. My scalp still itches bas daily ‍♀️. Thank you in advance sista❗

Tamara McKenzie: I would love to hear your thoughts on both, but if I would have to choose I would say butters.

Nozipho D: CGM next and butters after Thank you for the awesome content I saw your video on the prop 65 list... When I checked it out I saw Aloe Vera listed on there. Would you please do a video on Aloe Vera and it's pros and cons.

Jen C: Thank you for the vlog. I would like to see you do the curly girl method vlog, I personally do not agree with a lot of it. And I do not believe in pre-pooing. I am a natural for a bit over 2 years now and there is just so much that the curly hair community does that I feel is uneccesary. Yes, hair is fragile and gentle and should be cared for well but I just feel like many in the curly hair community is piggy backing off of one another. Do what works for "your" curly hair without compromising the integrity of it's health; is what I believe. Also one of my friends (shes in her 50s) relaxed her hair 2 months ago with a relaxer she always uses and she's realized that weeks later she got a rash on her neck, face, forehead, arms and hands. It comes and goes. She believes that as she is getting older that its possible she had an allergic reaction to her relaxer. What are the chances of that happening? In my past hair relaxing days I tried a relaxer I never tried before once called (Hawaiin Silky) and in 2 days my entire ear broke out in an intense itch and peeling all over the back and around the ear. When I went back to my old relaxer it never happened again. I was in my 20s. Im in my early 40s now. I am just glad my relaxing days are over! Blessings~

Andrea Alvarado: I just found you and I’m so thank full, i appreciate the other curly hair youtubers but I’ve been looking for you. More ppl need to find you

LittleNicole94: I would like to hear more about butters and how they affect hair texture.

Shena52: This video is very good. Keep bring it!!

Alicia Acosta: I will love to learn more about butters thanks, great video

Obedience Deking: Thanks for the information and I would love a video on butters

L E: Curly girl method! Your hair is beautiful! Also is it bad for scalp to refresh with water? Does it cause dandruff?

arteisia calvin: I never hoppee on the curly girl method but im soo intrigued by all the butters there are and which ones are good for what in hair and for skin as well.

TOCCARA HOKO YARI SENSEI TIGUR: Thanks for the info gorgeous.i have Dreds lol I really hope I can use some of your knowledge to help them

Renette Gordley: To be honest I don't smell any fragrance in any hair products like I use too.

Reservechic: I just live all the great facts that you be sharing with us. As, your the only chemist on YT that I trust to keep it totally with us. I would love to know if shea butter truly had the ability to penetrate ones hair strands 100%? It seems to me like a log of she’s butter based products that I’ve tried simply leave a residue on my hair and never fully penetrate my hair at all. Then I end up with lots of buildup and I have also experienced flaking from such too. Which is why, I’d live for you to do a video breaking down the different types of Shea butter there are and do they have the total ability to completely penetrate into ones hair strands or not? Also, what are the major pros and cons (that you happen to readily know of) associated with Shea butter or Shea butter based products where Shea butter is used very high up on the ingredients list (within the very first 7 ingredients within a product) as well.

Bee: The issue I have with fragrance is that while many are not sensitive to it at this moment, many will develop a sensitivity to it in the future. I can not tell you how many people i have treated with fragrance sensitivity who didn’t have sensitivity in teenage and college years but developed it later on. Probably treated patients in the hundreds by now. The saddest is when the irritation develops on the scalp. Time and time again data has shown fragrance as an irritant, and yet the skincare community here on youtube is still saying it isn’t harmful. Once the hair follicle is damaged there is no going back people.

J Sand: I know this is totally off topic....but I was scrolling through your videos and I found a video that you did in... wait for it.... 2011. I saw it years later and thought, "This girl is smart and knows what she is talking about." So I put it in my favorite videos list. I JUST now realized that it was YOU!! OMG. Loved you then and love you now. Keep on educating us. By the way, the video I was talking about was the difference between lye and no lye relaxers.

mj jain: Does the information shared in this video apply for skincare too or just haircare?

Arianna Hawkins: New Subscriber!! I have a question. What are some all natural and non toxic but affordable products that you would recommend for color treated hair?

Jennifer Claudio: I would to know your thoughts on the curly girl method.

Joana Tinoco: Thank you for this information I was searching on you tube about fragrances. What about dye color in hair products?

Gaye Suzette Riddick: Thanks for this informative video.

ChikereCarlyn2stars: Butters pleaze! For me trying to keep in the the moisture and frizzyness in my crown area.

Grace Osas: I want to know about any alternatives to grease or oil as sealants, for example if we can use gel as a sealant.

Natalia Johnson: I would love to know about the Curly Girl Method

MzWanda Blessedbythebest: Great vid! But fragrance in hair products irritate my scalp.

NowWhat: Tell it girl, tell it.

Rhonda Marie Henderson: Some of The Mane Choice's products are too heavily scented. Which is why I don't use them anymore.

Kei Gravesande-Wilson: I would love to hear more about butters

Singularity -: Why are GMO foods more likely to cause disease than their unmodified versions? That's against what I've learned about nutrition and food safety and their connection to diseases so far, so I'm curious about what made you make that statement.

MegInWhispers: the chemicals in fragrance definitely can contribute to hormonal issues. avoid them!

Candice Jones: Love your videos

Unaverage K3: Definitely butters!!

Ossie R: I prefer hair products with little or no fragrance. I can’t tolerate strong fragrances.

Gena Ferral: wow that was very informative thank you

R&D E&JLee: PLEASE do BUTTERS first....Then CG

theboolala: Please talk about butters!!!

OliviaDrawsArt: Id like to hear more about cgm

Mechell Graham Channel: Is the P supposed to be pronounced in Pthalates? ‍♀️

jas: Tonya can you make a video for a explaining the difference between deep conditioners & regular rinse out conditioners ? Do deep conditioners do anything different than regular conditioners; break it down chemistry style lol
