Monisa does like her natural hair but because of how bad her shrinkage is, she wants to have elongated curls without having to damage her hair.

Hair Tip #1 Roller Setting or Doing Natural Hair Styles for a Non-Permanent Option

If you want to loosen tight curls naturally, doing a roller set on natural hair is one of the best and safest ways to do so! If you don't mind using heat on your hair, curling wand curls on natural hair will elongate the look of your hair but of course, you have to take the necessary steps to stretch your natural hair for your best wand results. Using curlformers on natural hair is also a great way to change your curly hair to wavy hair as well for a non-permanent change to your curl pattern.

Hair Tip #2 Getting a Texturizer Professionally Done for a Permanent Option

You can soften the texture or curl pattern of your natural hair with a texturizer if you want to permanently alleviate your natural hair shrinkage but once you do this, your hair will not return to its original shrinkage or curl pattern!

Hair Tip #3 Longer Hair Will Make Your Shrinkage Appear Less Dramatic

With a healthy hair care regimen, you will begin to notice that your natural curls on longer hair will have more hang time and less shrinkage. Understanding hair types for natural hair will gauge you on what you hair will look like and behave with your different stages of growth. Your curls will stay but you will notice that with longer hair, it may look as if your texture or curl pattern loosened when this is just the pull of gravity on your hair.

Hello, everyone. This is Breanna Rutter, author of one of my most popular books, the natural hair Bible and founder of howtoblackhair.com. For this video I will be as an email that was sent to me by Monisa. Sent me an email saying that she hates her natural hair is always shrinking and it's hard to keep it elongated. So she wonders if I have any options to help her to see more of her true length while wearing her hair Lisa. Thanks for your email and I'm glad you sent it, a lot of people have been asking me about how to keep their hair elongated and stressed, and also to avoid shrinkage. So I got some tips for you that I want you to either incorporate or think about. In regards to actually keeping your hair stressed and minimizing shrinkage, so the very first thing that I'm going to suggest is a nonpermanent option for elongating your hair, and that is by doing natural, hair styles. A popular way to elongate your hair is a style called a twist out where you actually twist your hair, when it's damn wet or dry with individual twists and then unravel them for a kind of curlier or wavy type of look to your hair. Another popular style is called a braid out. You braid individual pieces of hair to keep it elongated and streched, and then you can unravel your hair to create to create a crimped look. Another style or another option for stretching your hair is also by roller setting. You can use perm rods, you can use straw sets said some people have even tried the paperback technique, where you roll pieces of hair, around cut out pieces of paper bags to actually create a curly spirally. Look so there's a lot of options that you can do for a nonpermanent way of stretching your hair and after you want your hair for a while and moisture starts to come back into play, whether you are adding product getting ready to wash your hair or you Are in a human environment, your hair will shrink once again, that's just the nature of the natural hair, but these are some ways that you can incorporate in order to stretch your hair now. The second option is a permanent way of stretching the natural hair, and this is called texturizing. A lot of people are for texturizing, a lot of people are against texturizing, and this doesn't matter because it depends on what you want to do with your hair and how you want to wear your hair because you're, the only one has to take care of it. I don't have to take care of your hair. Your friend doesn’t have to take care of your hair. Not even your stylist has to take care. Your hair, you depend. You depend on yourself as far as, if you want to take care of it working to delegate someone else, take care of it. So texturizing is a option for you. If you feel like you want to permanently alleviate the shrinkage that you are experiencing, while also retaining some of your texture now, this process is different for a lot of people. Some people like to do this in the comfort of their own home and other individuals like to go to a salon. I suggest that you do leave this up to a professional, because chemicals are required to change the texture of your hair, and I want to make sure that you're doing the best thing that you can to prevent any possible irritation or factors of hair loss or anything. Like that that can occur when using a chemical that straightens your hair, so texturizing is up to you – is one of the options that I'm suggesting it is a permanent option, because this is going to forever change the texture and on the dynamic of your hair. This will change the texture a little bit, but what texturized actually does is that you elongate your hair, so you already have a visible, curl pattern. It will make your curl pattern look stretched instead of widened of. If you have kinks, it will actually relax your kinks. A little bit so is not as prominent and also so you have as much shrinkage now. The third thing that I want to suggest is that you just put out a little bit so that it’s, not as prominent and also because of shrinkage, won't go away, especially if your hair is not chemically treated now. The thing that I'm going to say is that your hair gets longer shrinkage isn’t as prominent. You have a very short hair shrinkage is in full effect. It doesn't have much weight because your hair shorter in length. Therefore, your hair will shrink a lot more easier and the shrinkage will be dramatic. But if you notice a lot of individuals who have had long natural hair will have hair that they've been going for two three or four years they will come to. This point would actually see that their hair is starting to droop or fall down a little bit when it's wet and even when it's product free, not a lot of people. At this point, confuse the fact that there hair is damaged in some way or that they've lost their texture. But if your hair is longer or it's becoming longer, is going to hang down more when it's wet because of the length and because of the extra water that your hair has to hold, the hair short shrinkage is more dramatic. Your hair is long. Shrinkage is less dramatic, so that's my last tip is that just be patient and wait for your hair to grow longer. So that way it actually will be more hang time, even though the shrinkage is still present. So thanks for your email and thank you all for watching, I hope they've learned a lot about shrinkage in different options that you can do to help you elongate your hair. So have a question for you on: how do you elongate your hair? Do you prefer twist outs, braid outs, perm rod sets or have you even concern yourself with possibly texturizing in your hair, or even do you take hair to keep it elongated? So those are my suggestions and as a couple questions I want to ask - and I want to thank you all for watching these videos - I shavers port. Helping Hand Solutions: I'm so loving the fact that she inner stands that everyone's hair journey is the choice of the head! I can't with the natural hair police especially those who don't have shrinkage, low manipulation and high velocity. I'm about the natural community but the whole point of the natural journey was to love our hair. Yet we all have to manipulate our hair black, white, green or blue to achieve a hairstyle that make us feel beautiful on the outside. So do what make you show up in the world in your face of beauty. Let's stop projecting on each other's hair!

glo sprit: I commend you on  a well thought out and informative video. For those of us who need detailed instructions, your precise delivery is perfect.  Thank you for your excellent contribution to the natural community. It is evident that you are well versed in this field.

Melissa Slade: Thank you! This really helped and encouraged me! Only one year and getting so frustrated with the shrinkage. I'll see what happens after my next year. Year 2.

Baby Face: Thank so much Breanna for sharing these tips for people who wants to go natural and are having trouble.

SuckuraTheThirstyBish GiggityGiggityGoo: You should show how you do these things some people are visual learners.

Warzone player: Hi. I just want you to also keep in mind Henna as an option. It is indeed a messy option but you get better at using it. Henna stretches your natural hair but it can also be drying as well so you will need to add moisture back into your hair. The longer you leave it the more it loosens the curls. Best of luck.

Luna Stone: I absolutely love your videos! I don't have kinky or coiled hair but I do have curly hair and I find your channel so helpful :) thank you!

Tmarie2u: Well attaining stretched hair is not a one step process for me but One important step that I feel is overlooked a lot is washing your hair in the shower standing up. I add the last part because some wash their hair in the tub but leaning over just like at the sink. This I feel is a missed opportunity to stretch your hair with no extra effort.  We all know the effect of water on our hair: It softens, the curls hang and loosen it RELAXES!! And you can take advantage of this natural process to Train it to hang DOWN! "But when I wash it in the sink it hangs down?" No it doesn't...  think about it it hangs forward and up. And when your washing and conditioning it your smoothing it which way? Up and forward because if you smooth it down it just doesn't work as well at the sink and the floor gets wet and somehow when your at the sink you smooth up and forward. And while you may want your hair to be stretched, All your actions are telling your hair "I want you to look just like Marge Simpsons Hair!!"  and reach for the Sky instead of hanging down. And think about the salon when they wash your hair it's smoothed Back and down, the way you want your hair TO FALL. Once again using gravity and the relaxing effect of water to train the hair. Or at least that's what I think and it's what works for me

Pineapple Vlog: I must be the only natural girl in the world who loves my natural Afro Jaír without loosening it one bit, mostly because I’m a lazy natural yet my hair grew it’s way to my middle back throughout all my laziness . I respect those who stay true to there hair texture

Tasia Antwanet: You're always so calm and informative. I always watch you first when I'm trying to learn. I have no clue why I'm just now subbing

Tanika Ivorri: I have tight kinky hair that is thick. Instead of using texturizing products to chemically alter my curl pattern, I started bleaching and using a toner on my hair. The bleach breaks my hair down some, then I can also have the hair color versatility I like. I really notice that when I have re-growth from my color, my hair gets really tight. I have stopped trying to stretch out my hair with styling because it is just too time consuming. I used to used perm rods. Now, I co-wash, shampoo/ condition or rinse with plain water almost daily. I apply my products afterward. I have extreme shrinkage, but more definition, moisture and control in the pattern.

Ana Clara: I loved this video, it is just amazing from the start to the very end

Kay Fields: I love twist outs. Texturing is still a relaxer.

CC tina patterson: My hair forever stays like the fros in the 60-70's. You can't even c a curl pattern! I can't go walking around like that because people think I just walked out the house without styling. It never has enough moisture. It would be nice to just give it a texturizer so it can look like something.

Esha C.: I use coconut oil and olive oil on my scalp with a little argan oil and Shea butter for moisture and I spritz it with water daily. I wash it bi-weekly and do the ACV rinse with it.

Roshun West: Texturizers aren't natural though it's not as harsh as a perm but still a soft relaxer

Harriet Smith: Very well done. Thank you soo much!

Adaora O: This is what relaxers/texturizers are for, they make your hair more manageable. If you are worried about damage just take care of ur hair by deep conditioning, protective styling, minimal heat, etc....

cj: you are so helpful and professional!! thank you

J ShaNee: Great video! I prefer a roller set. My results are always the same and full of body.

jojo: Hope you do skin videos. Your skin is glowing!

Talesofwonder81: This video was mad relaxing!!!

Kissyface454: I love your channel! So informative

giggles jr: i do bantu knots to keep my short 4b natrual hair loose and i love it#!

Charae LaQuenta Ratliff: I like to do perm rod, curlformers, flexi rod & magnetic roll sets for a stretched look.

Mimi Oberry: Love your naturally kinky coily hair. It's beautiful

Jackie Clark: I like how you explain this your a great teacher

Alexis: I stretch my hair with the banding method. I use twist outs/braid outs/bantu knots to add definition but it doesn't really help stretch it for me.

Sandra Foreman: I use heat when the weather is cooler (press and curl). During the summer I do a twist outs.

MsBrownsugar11: I actually don't try to elongate my hair no more bc i have really bad shrinkage. No matter how long my hair gets it still shrink extremely short. I get a couple of disrespectful curls that hang but that is it. The reason i learned empress my shrinkage is bc of what u said when moisture, or products hit my hair it shrink right back up. So i don't sweat the shrinkage i just get a chuckle out of ppl when i straighten my hair.

Esha C.: Breanna can you make a video about retaining moisture in 4B/4C hair and what good carrier oils to use and which lighter oils to use with them. I've been having a horrible itching dry scalp and I do ACV rinses too.

Krazy K: Sorry for the mix up I've been using certain products now I have 3c/3b hair Thanx for the tips⭐

jellybelly3000: i have used the banding method n stretch n bobby pin my twists down overnight n on dry hair or a re-twist it take less pinning time also with twisting the hair if your hairs not protein sensitive you could try putting Eco style r the green olive oil kind on it also with a medium to light moisturizer or  leave in

Samira Serghini: I love your soft and clear voice, pleasant to listen to!

Spectra Amunari: Great video! Thanks

Quann DayTV: Thank you, and you're so beautiful

Kayla Ali- Joseph: Meh twist outs are okay...I actually prefer to do twists and braids. I'm a lazy natural so usually when I do twist outs it's a day or two before I wash. I like the dread type of look that twists and braids give my hair so I just keep it like that and do my wash, henna, indian powders, and oil care. I enjoy the length I'm starting to see. And I enjoy taking care of my hair. If you love your hair, your hair will looove you! ;-)

Taylor Hattley: The shrinkage can get worse as natural hair gets longer because of knots and matting that some naturals experience who have about 2+ years of hair growth.

Corinthia Woodford: Twists out, braids outs, Bantu knots etc don't work for me. :( like my natural hair is really strange.... It curls and wraps on itself (like single strands of hair will wrap up on themselves) a lot for example. I have literally have 4 different textures and if I do twists or anything, my hair will shrink still just the same and it is just an hot mess in the morning. For stretching, I have to use heat to get the best results and even I don't like those results, it doesn't feel stretched enough to me. Also my ends don't like stretching either and it is really hard to get them stretched because they just want to stay curly no matter what I do. So I resorted to keeping my hair  in protective styles. :(

Tatiana Stricklin: You..are..perfect

Annie Franck: I do twist after 4 days after my wash

Ashley Crystal: the last tip is the best- wait for it to grow.

DeAna Williams: I prefer twist outs and braid out at the moment.
