We teamed up with TRESemme to educate on how to read a shampoo ingredient list, but all opinions are our own. We find that ingredients are often demonized on the internet without any evidence, so in this video we show you how we read ingredient lists to decide if a product is safe using scientific evidence!

What'S up everyone we're back dr maxfield, dr shaw, and welcome back to our channel dr lee, where we talk about all things, skincare and dermatology. Today we have a little bit of a controversial topic and we'll talk about a couple, controversial things. In fact, on our channel we do a lot of debunking of misinformation. That'S out there we break down hacks that are fake. We break down hacks that are true, and so in this video we're going to do a little bit of a debunking of some of the ingredients that have been demonized on social media. One of the most frustrating things that we see on social media is fear, mongering and misinformation regarding certain ingredients, and you all see this too, you see the videos out there that go viral, and then you get worried about a certain skin care ingredient and you wonder Whether or not you should avoid it and on our channel, we debunk misinformation all the time we debunk hacks, we talk about ingredients, and so what we're going to do today is we're going to break down one of these ingredients that has really been demonized and we're Going to really go into the fine details of it and we're going to do a little bit of educating on how to read an ingredient list. So a little bit of background here, a couple of months ago, there was actually a lot of misinformation being spread about tresemme and one of the ingredients and the possibility that it caused hair loss right and just because someone files, a lawsuit, doesn't make it true. It doesn't make it false. It just means that we need more information and we don't know everything that happened exactly in this case. We don't know the details of the people that were affected, but we can just talk about what we know about ingredients and what we know about the science behind some of the claims that are being made for those of you who follow me on other social media Platforms like instagram tick, tock. You know that i've already done a video talking about the tresemme lawsuit and talking about one of the ingredients that was demonized in the lawsuit and i kind of broke it all down and social media is kind of a funny place, because when you post a video, A lot of people see it, and my goal is always to educate the public, but tresemme saw the video and they wanted me to expand more about this particular topic on youtube. So we're making this video in sponsorship with tresemme, basically reiterating what i said in that video and at the end of the day, regardless of the fact that this is sponsored, i'm still going to come to the same exact conclusion that i came in the video that I posted a few months ago, so one of the things we always want to do is help educate you on what ingredients do and help you be deliberate about using each ingredient. So you can decide what you want in your skincare routine and what you don't want in your skincare routine. So today breaking down an ingredient list. Here we go here. We go all right, so the product that we're gon na be breaking down today is the tresemme keratin, smooth shampoo, and the funny thing about going through this ingredient list is that when i was a kid i don't know, if you did this, but i used to Do this all the time i would sit in the bathtub while i was taking a bath and i would just read the backs of shampoo bottles. I don't know why that was fun to me and see if i could pronounce certain words or if i could memorize the list and i would just sit there getting all pruning in the bathtub. While i did this. So this is a full circle moment to be on youtube, reading an ingredient list to you and explaining to you what these things do, which, as a kid i didn't know what they did, but now i sort of do so. I think the easiest way to do this is to break this down into groups and categorize each ingredient into a certain group. So we have the cleansing agents or surfactants. Then we have some of the beneficial ingredients like things that repair and hydrate the hair yeah, and then we also have things like solvents fragrance and then preservatives and we'll talk about the role of each of those all right. So, first up, let's talk about the cleansing agents or surfactants, so first you have cocomidopropyl betaine. This is a cleansing agent. It'S found in a ton of different products. Um it does a really good job, just cleansing the skin, so it cleanses the skin. You can sometimes find it in your facial cleansers and it and it cleanses the hair. So what it does is remove residue remove, buildup, remove dirt, remove debris, whatever you've got on your skin, it helps remove it, and then you have some other ones in here as well. You have sodium perisulfate, which is an anionic surfactant. It also does a really good job of cleansing and then sodium laureth sulfate, which is another antiotic cleanser. That also does a good job of cleansing. It does actually okay. So here's the thing like a nerdy moment here just come with me, so sodium laureth, sulfate and ammonium lower sulfate. They actually have a unique role and if you've ever wondered how you can have like a cleansing, hydrating ingredient and also, if you've ever wondered why you use a loofah. This is why so the loofah introduces air into these ingredients and what it does it helps emulsify. This so when you have a ton of cleanser like the cleanser to water ratio is high, you actually can rinse off the cleanser and everything emulsified like fat, dirt. Soap, scum, whatever's on your skin. It'S going to get rinsed off, but it's actually going to leave behind the moisturizing agents when, like the water to cleanser ratio, is high. So that's why i use a loofah and that's how some of these ingredients work. So these cleansing ingredients do exactly what they say. They'Re going to do they're going to cleanse because otherwise residue builds up on your hair. Dirt debris builds up on your hair and that causes you to lose shine. It causes you to lose curls and it causes your hair to just look less lively and often less manageable. In my experience, so yeah that's what they do. That'S perfect so after you've reset your hair with the cleansers, you're kind of starting fresh and then you introduce some of the beneficial and active ingredients that we'll talk about now, all right. So let's talk about some of the beneficial hydrating ingredients. You have sclero-chira bairia seed oil. What on earth is that that's just a fancy name for marula oil, which you may see in some of your skincare products, some of your hair care products and has antioxidant and hydrating properties. It'S a wonderful oil for the hair and the next one is going to be the argania spinosa kernel oil. And what is this? This is a fancy name for argan oil argan oil. So i don't know if you guys follow me on instagram. You'D have to go way back in it, but i actually traveled to morocco, which is a beautiful country, and that's where i developed my obsession for argan oil. So argan oil comes from the argan tree in morocco. It is a wonderful ingredient for the hair. I'Ve always recommended this for the hair, because it has hydrating properties, it has antioxidant properties and it's non-comedogenic or non-pimple forming so argan oil. Tremendous ingredient absolutely love it in hair care products, absolutely love the country of morocco, weird obsession uh with some of the things that came from there. I brought some actually some of my first natural products home from morocco, so pretty cool argan oil is definitely one of the best one of the one of the best. It'S like a very balanced ingredient bounced oil. I was on an oil kick for quite some time, and this is a very good one exactly he did. He did have an obsession with oils. If you go back a few months on his instagram, where he was just breaking down every oil he could find, and then he started to get into motor oil, and it was a bizarre next up on the list is hydrolyzed keratin, so hydrolyzed keratin shows up right. After argan oil and it's a great ingredient, that's been shown in studies to actually repair the hair after it's been damaged and kind of restore some of the things that you lose as your hair grows out. So next up is glycerin, which is a great humectant, moisturizer and then dimethiconol, which is another protective moisturizing ingredient. So these are some of the ingredients they're going to help give your hair that volume the shine and kind of bring it to a place that you want. It to be after you've, cleansed it and now you're kind of treating it and after your hair has been damaged from whether it be sunlight or just environmental factors. It'S going to do some of the process of repairing your hair, and so these are something that are adding something to your hair and they're great ingredients. So you have argan oil, you have marula oil, you have glycerin and you have dimethicone all which helps to repair. So next up, let's talk about some of the viscosity agents, the agents that give your products, texture, color and some of the solvent agents in your skincare products. Now these are the ingredients that i gloss over when i'm reading an ingredient list, and so what we'll do here is we'll just sort of list them for you. So you know what those are, but they have very specific properties from the chemist that formulates these products. They basically serve a role so they're, not just a bunch of powders that are mixed together in your skincare products, but they're, actually something that you can use and tolerate on your scalp and so an example of this would be water which believe it or not. Is an ingredient that people actually demonize on social media? If you, google, is water, bad for your skin, you will find blogs where people will say. Water is the most harmful ingredient in skin care products. So if there's an ingredient, there's somebody who's against it. Let'S just put it that way, so then you have citric acid, which is a buffer. You have carbomer, which is a viscosity agent. You have cocomite mea, which is a cleansing agent. So all these ingredients, they have a certain specific role but they're, not necessarily cleansing agents or hydrating ingredients, they're preservatives they have specific roles to give your products texture. Interestingly, as a clinician, you know, this is something that we would absolutely gloss for because we want the highlights. We want like, what's active, what's working for you, what's going to hurt you or harm you, yeah, there's, probably so much work that goes on the back end. Formulating this part that it's probably underappreciated but yeah as a clinician, you know it's just not something i focus on right. So this is something you want to talk to your chemist friends about and see. They'Ll talk to you about these ingredients because i don't i don't really consider these ingredients when i'm evaluating a skincare product. Essentially. So the next thing, we'll talk about is kind of the things that add to the experience of this and actually kind of justify that in a lot of our videos. We say you know this ingredient, you know, may not be the best for everybody, but it adds the experience and that's fair. Skin care is like an experience in the lifestyle for a lot of people. It'S true. I will concede this that, and i always talk about how i'm like about the business skincare person like what does it do? What is it going to do for my skin to make it better? But you know, skin care is a lifestyle. People do want to enjoy their skincare products and i completely understand that so some of the fragrant ingredients will kind of go down the list here, yeah. So some of the fragrances we have we have just fragrance, we have citronella, we have geraniol, we have hexal cinnamon. We have limonene linoleul benzyl salicylate, alpha isomethyl ion. We are crushing it with the words and vocabulary today, dude. That was amazing. Actually i'm shocked okay, so that was wow. Okay, so i don't even know what to say. I thought he was gon na have to do multiple shoots on that. He did it in one. Go these products they serve to make it so that your your products don't smell. Like dog water, i mean that's really what they do and as if you guys follow me on social media. You know i've been critical of fragrance in skincare products because i believe that they don't add much to a beneficial ingredient, but i still maintain, as i've always maintained, that in washoff products they're on your skin, in contact with your skin for only a short amount of Time so really, what ends up happening is that allergy and stuff develops after things are in contact with your skin for a little bit longer time, and so since they're cleansing agents, their ability to create allergy irritation once they wash off is very limited, and i completely Understand that people want their skincare products to smell, good, and so also worth noting, is that your scalp is actually really resistant to allergen and irritations because of the number of hair follicles because of the thickness of the scalp compared to the face and the eyelids. We often don't see isolated, allergy or irritation on the scalp, and so, if you are allergic to something in your hair care products, it's not only going to manifest on the scalp, and we see this with people that are allergic to hair dyes. Quite often is that they develop allergy irritation on the ears and on the eyelids, and sometimes no allergy or irritation on the scalp. Because of how resistant it is yeah. These make for really interesting pictures, so, like actually part of the testing we do is we have to look at a picture. What'S the cause, what happened and these pictures are interesting because you have like drip marks down the neck or like down the chest or whatever, and you can tell oh. This is something that ran off at the scalp. But then you look at the scalp and it's just uninvolved yeah. So this is something that we've noticed in dermatology for many many years and it's just something that is an interesting phenomenon, but often scalp, irritation, isolated, very uncommon, all right. So next up, let's talk about the highlight of this whole entire video, which is preservative. So what was demonized or what this lawsuit is over is actually a preservative ingredient. What on earth are preservatives? First, let's go through what the preservatives in here are, so the preservatives here are sodium benzoate and benzyl alcohol. Now these ingredients are critical. You need these. You need preservatives in your skincare products, otherwise they develop yeast bacteria mold. So all these things, the reason why you open your skin care product and it's not growing things like your produce and your fridge is because they have preservative ingredients that keep that from happening, and so the ingredient that was demonized that this whole video is about is Dmdm hydantoin as you'll notice, this product does not contain dmdm hydantoin in this product anymore, so this used to contain dmd my dan to win the keratin smooth shampoo, it's no longer in the ingredient list. But that being said, it's very important for me to note here that even what i said months ago in my video, i still maintain that dmdm hydantoin is a safe ingredient that does not cause hair loss and what we do know about. Dmdm, it's been around for actually a long long time and it's in a myriad of products. So every now and then they'll come together. Look at ingredients and say you know: is this product safe, look at all the ingredients it's in and then determine if it is or if it isn't, and this one has been shown to be safe on multiple occasions and it's actually found in not only a ton Of adult ingredients and products, it's also in a lot of baby shampoos as well. So the question is: is it possible that dmdm high density is going to cause you allergy or irritation? Any ingredient can cause allergy and irritation. Does that mean that you should definitely not use it? So this is very interesting to me because i actually personally like tea tree oil out of all the natural ingredients. This one has a great amount of studies to back what it's proposed to do. Therefore, i like it, it has a deliberate role and function now. The question is, though, teacher is also a well-recognized allergen and irritant and therefore should that preclude its use, probably not so with any but any ingredient. You kind of have to weigh the benefits and the risks, so we need preservatives, but there's a risk that your preservatives could be causing allergy and irritation. Well, we need them, so we have to continue to use them and weigh the benefits and the risks, and so we use ingredients or preservatives that are considered relatively safe for most people. You can develop an allergy and irritation to anything. In fact, some people are allergic to sunlight. So what are you going to do right, you're going to say you know, ban the sun right, there's really no way um to completely make everything safe for every individual person, because it's possible to develop allergy to almost anything, and so you just have to be very Deliberate about what you're choosing now dmdm hydan to win all the studies have shown every time they revisit this with expert panels of cosmetic scientists dermatologists. They come to the same conclusion that dmdm hydantoin is a relatively safe preservative. That does exactly what it says. It'S going to do, which is keep bacteria yeast fungus from growing in your skin care products all right. So this is how we pretty much break down an ingredient list. We take the ingredients and we put them into specific categories and we look for the beneficial ingredients and then we look for the ingredients that could potentially cause allergy or irritation. Do we expect you guys to do this all the time? Absolutely not. That would obviously be very time consuming. Bear in mind, though we do this for every ingredient product that we review, we go through each ingredient very deliberately to understand exactly what it does. How can you guys learn more about ingredients? A really good website is the inkydecoder.com. We'Ll list it here for you, but basically what it does is if you type in the ingredient, it will tell you what that ingredient does and then you can learn more about that ingredient, so our ingredients, everything that make up a skincare product, no right. So if you, if you have all the ingredients to make a cake, it doesn't mean necessarily that you make a good cake. So there's a lot that goes into specific formulation that brands use and the quality of the ingredients that they use. That'S much harder for you to know as a consumer, so as a consumer, the only power thing that you have the thing that empowers you to make informed decisions about your skin care products or your hair care products is to look at the ingredient list. That is given to us and then use our knowledge, use the website like inkydecoder.com, to really understand what these ingredients do and whether or not you want them in your skincare or hair care routine. So, in summary, we think that the trust me products are safe and effective for most people they're going to be similar in quality to the conditioner shampoos and hair care products. You find at your salons they're, going to do exactly what they say: they're going to do and that's cleanse moisturize and repair the hair. Now do they have potential allergens in them sure sure they do right. So fragrances can cause allergy and irritation in some people. Cocomital propyl betaine is an ingredient that can cause allergy and irritation in some people. So how do you know if you're having allergy or irritation to a skin care product or a hair care product, allergen irritation can look like redness burning, itching blistering and some of these things are signs and symptoms of allergy and irritation. So if you are developing allergy or irritation completely reasonable to stop using a product that you think is causing it and then go see your dermatologist for patch testing. What we do is we put little stickers on your skin to basically see if you are allergic to that particular ingredient. That being said, like we said earlier, scalp irritation, isolated, scalp, irritation or algae is very, very uncommon if you are allergic to something in your hair care products it most commonly shows up on the eyelids and the ears and really not the scalp, so just bear that In mind that if you are developing allergy irritation on your eyelids, you can look at potentially things like your hair dye products that can cause allergy yeah. Like dr shaw said, we want you to have the tools available, so you can look at ingredients, know what they're doing for you know, which ones you can just kind of ignore know which ones you need to avoid. But then i'm actually always about just being very deliberate and like knowing exactly what the problem is. So if you do think you're allergic to something patch testing, like you said, is perfectly reasonable. Then you'll know for sure, if you're actually allergic to a substance right and if you're not allergic to something, there's no reason to throw out all your hair care products and start over just because you heard a rumor on social media. I think that you really need to know. Is it going to cause hair loss? That'S where the rumor basically started on social media with these particular products was that you would just use trust me. Hair prayer products and your hair would fall out which is really not good. Business practices for a hair care company to have a product just cause your hair to fall out. But really, i think, what's happening with some people is that if you're developing allergy irritation burning itching, which we don't know exactly what happened in this particular lawsuit and we don't have any details about it. But if you do develop allergy irritation to something, then you could cause hair loss, but without those things very unlikely - and i know we've talked about this before - how do we come to the conclusion about what we recommend and what we don't recommend right and it comes To me, i basically come to the conclusion, there's so many different factors that you have to take into account when you make a recommendation of a product and that recommendation basically comes down to ingredients. Uh do the benefits outweigh the risks. It'S a very complicated calculation, but the simplest way i've been able to break it down is basically would i recommend these to my family members or if my family member told me i'm using this product, should i throw this out based on this rumor on social media? I would tell them no, and these are the people i care about most in the world, and so basically, my conclusion is: don't throw out your products. These products are safe, they're, effective they do what they say, they're going to do, if you are allergic to something, if you are developing irritation, allergy to something completely reasonable to stop using these things, but without that happening, these products or these ingredients have never been shown In any studies to just cause hair loss without any other signs or symptoms, as always be a skeptic educate yourself, don't even listen to us. You know, don't listen to us. Look up! Look! Look up these ingredients! Um! You know. Pubmed is a great resource. The inky decoder is a great resource type these ingredients in and see what comes back with them and see if there's something that you want to avoid in your skincare products. But for us based on what we know, it's not something that we tell people to avoid right. That'S so that's correct! That'S like we see this all the time. This is something that's been blown way out of proportion. We saw this with parabens um products are taking this out of the ingredient list and it's actually invoked them to kind of. Like change your stance, they actually did a non-allergen of the ear just to enforce the fact that parabens don't cause this, which is actually like a turn. They don't do this normally yeah, there's an allergy society and they do something really interesting where they create the allergen of the year and the non-allergen of the year, and so parabens were actually the non-allergen of the year because they were so demonized on social media and Other places but then found to not really cause a lot of allergy and irritation in people and then in fact, they replaced a parabens and a lot of hair care products with less safe preservatives that were actually found to cause allergy, much more common than parabens. And so just keep this in mind that when you remove an ingredient from a particular list, sometimes they're replaced with less safe ingredients, and so this is something as consumers we have to be very mindful of is that some ingredients that have been tested for thirty. Forty. Fifty years, like dm, damn high dancing win, have a lot of data showing that they're safe in most people always be skeptical, always always be skeptical you're, the consumer. You have all the power to make purchasing decisions. It is your body, your face, your hair. What you want to put in it is completely up to you, educate yourself, don't just listen to a 15 second tick! Tock video! Don'T just listen to us! We expect you guys to do your own independent research. We'Re definitely going to put some links below with some of the research that we came up to these conclusions with and then you can interpret that data yourself and let us know what you think in the comments yeah. Thank you guys all so much for tuning in. We appreciate you always appreciate everything. Please, like comment subscribe, we appreciate everything you guys do you guys are the absolute best community. We absolutely love the skincare hair care community um keep spreading positivity into the world stay tuned for more. You

Michelle Mar: YAY! I saw your original video on instagram a few months ago and kept my tresemme products! By the way, I love that you put timestamps to make it easy for those of us who are busy!

Just Commenting: Can we have more videos on hair loss and shampoos / supplements that target people who experience hair loss :)

J H: I love the tresemme keratin smooth products! I can’t live without them in the summer! I wasn’t aware of this rumor but I’m happy you guys gave them the green light

Last Fading Smile: I hadn't heard about this controversy, so when I saw the video title I had a nervous chuckle with my bottle of Treseme. Thanks for setting the record straight, and me at ease! lol

Amy Galvin: I’m a licensed cosmetologist. When I run out of my so called salon/ professional shampoo, I grab Tresemme Keratin Shampoo! Reading the ingredients of products in the bathtub? You were so destined to be a Dermatologist!!

Kim Granja: I used Tresemme for years. At the end 2020 I started using the color-safe version. My head itched so bad I thought I had lice. I had my daughter in law check my hair and I had huge dandruff flakes. On top of that, I started getting pimples on my scalp. I also had a lot of hairloss when I washed my hair. I changed to Sally's brand of Biolage and it took about two weeks to start getting better.

Cristina Guzman: very well explained! I'm EXTREMELY allergic to aloe, tried it on my scalp and on my face and it irritated me like nothing I had ever used before! We are all very different and if something doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it's a bad product....

Anna Maria: My chemistry degree prevents me from not reading labels. It’s a blessing and curse. I hate shopping for new products now. Even though I went into mathematics, chem never leaves.

mdml: As someone who formulates shampoos and conditioners, thanks for touching on this topic although it would've been great to consult with a cosmetic chemist too. Misinformation caused by fear marketing of "natural" brands and in social media is completely out of control. Just remember, any ingredient approved by cosmetic regulators and used in the recommended amounts in a formulation are considered safe. No brand wants you to get sick. There is no logic to that. Brands want you to like their product and you to see results so you keep buying. Natural does NOT mean safe. Preservatives and chelating agents are there to protect your product from harmful bacteria and mold and to keep your product stable in a warm and humid environment like your bathroom.

Jessica A: Ogx was another major one. I was using this shampoo for about a year and developed irritation and dryness eventually. After I stopped using it my hair started growing like crazy. It was hardly growing while using it. There are a ton of people who experienced hair loss

Abigail Mateo: I think that a hair care video dedicated to reviewing good affordable hair products would be a good idea ☺️ Thanks for the info! Love the channel

HoneyBee: Thank you! I've used TRESemmé for years and it's always done wonders for my hair. If I came across the lawsuit on my own, it would've frightened me into not using their products anymore. I'm thankful that I saw this video first.

Araceli Carranza: Navigating the public critical eye as a healthcare professional is incredibly challenging these days. We have a plethora of information out there now, but sometimes it is very hard to weave out the quacks from sound science. However, i wish the general public respected the Professionals more than sue down the street with a blog etc. Keep on keeping on, i really enjoy your channel!

Molly Williamson: i'm gonna need like 5 more videos on hair loss and scalp care

Arpita Mehta: Needed this video badly! I love Tresmme products but after the nasty reputation that the brand earned, I had really started doubting the product line!! Thank you doctors!!

Melissa Wiggles: The same people would complain that their products smell like “dog water” lol Thanks for another information filled video!

harmonee07: I appreciate you guys posting this video and actually explaining the use of this ingredient. I have seen a lot of videos claiming how this can cause hair loss. Even some dermatologists claiming this as well, which was surprising.

Vicki Weber: I've been curious about the controversy since they became cruelty free recently. Good to know it's safe in general, but I still need sulfate free products since I color my hair and sulfates are hair color killers.

Sabont Magont: As a hairdressing student I just wanted to mention that sulfates can sometimes be too harsh and remove the natural oils that are supposed to stay in your hair. Betaines are less harsh, so if you feel like you have dry hair/ curly hair/ treated hair, you might want to opt for a gentler shampoo without sulfates. It will not suds up as much, but they will still do a fine job to remove product and dirt (there's also nothing wrong with a deep cleanse once in a while). :)

Ann Estep: A lot of issues can cause hair loss that have nothing to do with products as well. Thyroid issues, malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, gastroparesis, just to name a few. One has to look at all health reasons as well before you can say it is a product problem.

Oh, Mylanta!: When I look at my life and wonder what choices lead me to be less successful than other's my age (or younger).. I'd have never guessed that swirling my hair underwater like a mermaid vs reading shampoo labels would've been so major LOL.

ThatGirlIsAwkward: I have a friend who's allergic to DMDM Hydantoin! She started having weird reactions to everything, shampoo, body wash, all kinds of stuff and her allergist did the skin allergy test and that was a big one. It has SO many other names, shes got what seems like an entire booklet of different names it's terrible trying to make sure she doesn't buy something with that in it though! These people could've literally just been allergic to it ‍♀️

Roshani Mahara: I used Tresemme products for the last 5-6 years, and it made my hair so much better. But last year when I got a new bottle of that shampoo, I started getting acne (i never had acne in my life except for a few months in my teenage period). After 3-4 months of changing every product, I finally changed the shampoo and the pimple was slightly less than before. But the damage had been done, my acne is still here on my face from the last 16-17 months, tried every treatment, from clear skin to skin full of blemishes, Tresemme did that to me. Now I get forehead acne from most shampoos, and I don't know which ingredient causes it.

Theresa Lockwood: Thank you for this! I just randomly came across this. I never heard about any controversy or lawsuit though and when I saw the title, I am like "uh, oh!" Not my shampoo. Lol! I have used TRESemme for over 20 years and I love it. It's the best shampoo that I have ever used and it is affordable and has great quality and quantity all at the same time for the price. I have no reason to change it and I don't even use other shampoos to swap it just to give a change (as people have recommended) because it is that good!

White Wall: I am a skin care enthusiast and I make my own skincare from shampoo, face wash, body wash and face serum. I used to have trouble skin and hair loss so bad and I use DMDM as preservative on all my home made product. I can swear my hair is no more falling and my skin has never been better. As long as u put it on safe amount, it really doesn't harm you

Coobroobloob: I used the Tresemme keratin shampoo and after a short time I noticed my hair started to feel brittle, I couldn't get a brush through it easily and it started to fall out more than usual. It took me a while to realize it was this shampoo. I stopped using it and my hair felt much better.

Esha Rao: I actually stopped using the shampoo after seeing one such video on Instagram. However, from my personal experience, their Keratin Smooth shampoo caused a lot of hair fall for me, been 3+ months I’ve stopped using it but I’m still seeing it’s effect. It used to make my scalp extremely oily, just from the second day itself. :/

PotatoHead: there seem to be a lot of lawsuits against hair care brands: Wen, DevaCurl and now this brand! problem is people are not washing their hair as often and also putting crap like dry shampoos on their scalps (to avoid washing properly) which clogs your scalp pores and and causes hair loss. I used to love Wen! until my hair started to fall out. Problem was it was not cleaning my scalp as it should. It's like washing your hair with conditioner every few days. Now I use proper good ol'fashioned shampoo and wash my hair every other day. I no longer have hair loss. I can't believe people get away with these lawsuits!

Awkward GenXer: More Arganier oil, less SLS! I agree that we shouldn’t all shun something because other people are allergic to. My scalp definitely joins the club when it comes to my sensitivity to SLS, no observable resiliency. There is no loofah involved in hair washing and it is hard to rinse off, it reliably gives me an oozy rash, even if it is in my toothpaste. Most fragrance doesn’t bother me. I don’t think I have issues with preservatives and welcome parable etc. But SLS is the devil in my book.

Jen: Thank you for all you guys do. Another great video. My kiddo just developed a bout of juvenile spring eruption (never even knew this existed). Would you consider doing a video on this or polymorphic light eruption in general and how to treat and prevent? Best wishes to you both.

erickmojo: I wonder if there’s a leave on product with minoxidil, caffeine and rosemary oil. I bet it’s gonna be bomb for people with thinning hair. All is proven to be beneficial for them

Fatimah Sheik Rahim: Every time I have an issue and by the end of that week you guys address my problem-wow my hair is generally thin and so much hair fell out this week when I washed it’s crazy but used the same shampoo and conditioner as I usually do this hasn’t happened before‍♀️‍♀️

Scorpion777 Silvermoon: All I know is I had to brush out my dreads after growing them for 10 years like a couple of months ago. this Tresemme Set has really, really helped my hair. I was afraid I was going to have to get a BURR or start bald headed and start over after having 25 inch long hair. I was really ashamed but then I learned I could brush it out and I was in store I saw this Treseemme Keratin set conditioner/shampoo and it really helped my hair. That's all I know. I'm going to keep on using it. I was able to get a perm and I don't want to stop using this. I love it.

Nicole Jimenez: Im so happy that you spoke about reading the ingredient list on bottles… that was my thing when I was a kid. Now I use my phone

Sharon Kresge: I’m allergic to sunlight, mostly UV but sometimes also visible light (I’ll have reactions underneath a white tee and never under a black tee). I grew up in Taiwan and California, so in the sun all the time. Until I went to college in New Hampshire, and had a huge reaction when the sun started appearing more in the spring! Definitely allergy can develop anytime and to anything! I’d love if you could talk more about scalp oiliness/dryness and shampoo/hair care needs. I notice that some shampoos tend to strip my hair and my scalp becomes unbearably oily the next day so I’ll have to wash daily, and some shampoos are more gentle and I can skip a day. I find that shampoos market toward hair texture types, lengths, or color, and not about scalp care (unless it’s dandruff, etc).

R Jnsn: Thank you for your series. It has been very helpful. My husband has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He has long suffered from dry, itchy skin. Is there a connection with hypothyroidism and if so how is his skin condition best treated? He takes thyroid medication. Thanks.

Bonnie Johnstone: For years I kept getting welts and red scalp from every shampoo! I mean, this went on for 66 years! (I’m 73) I found out that I’m allergic to legumes, flax and wheat. These items are all too common in shampoos, One day a Hairdresser shampooed my hair with Oribe regular (the one in the maroon container). Miraculously, I this time I had no red scalp or bumps! I could’t believe it! With that shampoo and no other, I have no irritation. My allergy is unusual. If I ingest a small amount of any legumes; flax or some seeds I’ll be sick for 4-5 days.

Cooky cutie: I love" tresEmme" keratin smooth shampoo it doesn't have an amazing smell but it makes your hair extremely shiny and smoooooothhh ,it's my personal favorite compared to other that are either tooooo expensive or cheap with no benefit

T L: "DMDM hydantoin is a “formaldehyde donor,” which means that to work as a preservative and antimicrobial, it releases small levels of formaldehyde throughout the shelf-life of a personal care product or cosmetic product."

Tata: I developed an allergy to Hyaluronic Acid. It is an amazing ingredient, but I cannot use it as much as before. And my mom is allergic to sunlight (as mentioned in your video).

Jessica T: Tresemma actually made my scalp burn starting the past 2 years and my hair was falling out. And last year i had 4 brand new bottles amd i threw them away.

Donna Hernandez: You guys are the best. I have been getting the best skincare education, Thank you guys for that.I have serious milia . Using salicylic acid for over a year. If you cold do a video on how to keep it under control? I would much appreciate. Love you guys!

sindhu saligram: I'd love to see your video on the effects of hard water on hair and skin. Also, do talk about bar shampoos and conditioners. They are becoming more popular because of the amount of plastic pollution that bottled products contribute to. Would love to know if they are good for the hair and scalp.

Nicole Polachak: I love y'all because you debunk things for us and teach us!! ❤️❤️

jamesk8s1: Thank you. It's amazing what education can do! So many love conspiracies over facts. Thank you for presenting facts!

Megan: You both are wonderful. Thanks for everything you do ✨

Jem 777: And I always tried to avoid SLS because I thought it was dangerous and a carcinogenic. So I've being using sls free shampoo and you don't get that much lather (because I was told that was what SLS did). And I miss that so much :( It was great you guys don't even reference that. I guess I shouldn't listen to people who aren't qualified . Thanks so much guys

Liz: Speaking for myself, I used the keratin repair shampoo & conditioner, I noticed I was shedding hair like a golden retriever, I also had an extremely sensitive scalp and these white bumps all over my scalp. Once I stopped using it, it cleared up. Unsure if I’m allergic or what, but either way I don’t hate tresemme, and glad to see this explained!

Simply with Love: I would absolutely love your opinions on estheticians!

Jacqueline Garcia: Love this! thank you! Keep spreading positivity to the world. :)))

Marsha K: Yes! I been waiting for this one. Good ingredients for the scalp.

Ashna Gray: I get so much hate for including these products in my hauls on TT/IG and it blows my mind how quickly people are to jump to conclusions without researching

Lix S: Awesome video! Could you please review Devacurl products, especially their No-poo(shampoo) and their conditioner? They have also had a lawsuit for over a year now because of hair loss, burns on the scalp, rashes etc. Some have claimed to have headaches, their hair has changed color and pattern. Devacurl products are made for curly hair and some people have claimed that their curl pattern has changed, even disappeared, completely because of their products. I mean, are those things really possible?

Lucrece von Kasm: Thank you gentlemen for being the voice of reason and science. Stay well and take care.

Souldivineguidance: Correlation does not equal causation!! Just because someone claims to have lost their hair due to a certain product or ingredient, it doesn't mean that is the cause of the hair loss, there are other confounding factors which could be causing the hair loss.

Megan: Awesome video! It was so helpful! I used a certain popular shampoo which gave me and my husband bald spots but it has also been magic for others for strong beautiful hair growth. Makes sense that we could have been sensitive to certain ingredients that were super beneficial to others.

Jenessa Miles Sturgell: Kinda bummed here that you didn’t go into why you are ok with controversial ingredients like sulfates/sulfides. It feels like you glossed over it for the sake of promoting this product. I would love to see a video on controversial ingredients with maybe a guest chemist? Something to give backing to your stamp of approval.

Gulf Coast October Reynolds: I found this video bc I bought Tres KS and my hair is falling out like crazy, I'm breaking out in hives, awful scalp dandruff, AND mouth breaking out!!! UGH!!! I thought it was the shampoo, quit using it, then thought maybe I'd had a bug. Started using it again and it all came back. But all these videos are saying NOPE. CAN'T BE TRUE

ChabVlog: I'm a fan of your videos! very educational and reliable! I would really love it if you would do a video of skincare products you should and should not mix and match please!!!

Sweet savory me: I had very thick and curly hair, FOREVER. Thinning hair was never even a thought in my mind. I have a couple wonderful conditioners that I've used for years that I switch back and forth with, and they keep my curls in great shape & they cut the frizz. Unfortunately, I've never really found the "ideal shampoo", most are more on the drying side for curly hair like mine. I have a couple that I stick with that are fine, but I've always hoped for something better. I finally went to the grocery store, which I normally wouldn't get hair care products there, and I got one, Thick & Full+ Biotin & Collagen Shampoo. Felt nice in my hair. Some months later I noticed my hair thinning at a rapid rate. Luckily I have a lot, so I wasn't too concerned at that time, but it continued. Then my daughter suggested I start using her Neutrogena Shampoo, anti-residue formula. Great idea and it's Neutrogena, can't go wrong and it seemed so pure and clean. Well, it did. I continued losing hair and my hairstylist even commented. Finally, my daughter heard about the lawsuit with regard to DMDM hydantoin. Looking at the ingredients for both of my new shampoo's, IT WAS IN BOTH! I of course immediately stopped using them, but it seems the damage was done. Now I'm left hoping that I can revive my scalp and try and bring back the hair growth that I lost. I'm truly devastated. I 100% believe the DMDM (dum dum) hydantoin was the cause. Sorry Doctorly guys. Per your recommendation, maybe the ordinary caffeine skin care product will help? I'm horribly concerned and so disappointed.

Jeanette Rosario: I’m glad I came across this video because I had stopped using the Keratin line because of the lawsuits …. But I noticed my hair was so much better when I used this

Ginia Maxwell: I have an old classmate who has a condition that basically makes him allergic to the sun. There are so many things to be allergic to that cherry-picking out of the millions who’ve had success with a product might be a steep battle.

Art.4.Love.: I like this brand and this exact shampoo. I like their products they have quality ingredients and great price. I buy both of the keratin smooth shampoo and conditioner. I know how to formulate my own shampoos and conditioners but buy these bc its easier for every day use. I leave the conditioner in my hair for about 5-10 min every time I condition. I add another heavy Panthenol based conditioner about once a week then put the Tres smoothing conditioner on top and do that for 5-10 min. I spend a lot of time reading bottles and am happy with Tres and the price $. Im not disregarding the law suit at all just sharing my experience. Also I firmly agree that you must have preservatives and they must be used correctly. A lot of things are being made out to be evil when they are often in fact essential and a wonderful thing. I understand that someone might not prefer one ingredient to another or might be sensitive personally to an ingredient but it might be fantastic for another. Same thing with medications for example.

GraceCase: I just plopped some cash on expensive brands and my hair is awful. Though this is sponsored, I trust these two docs A LOT. So I’ll try this for the price.

truepeacenik: I developed a lavender allergy after working in a spa for one year. Eight years later, I can touch the plant. All because every freaking spa thinks everyone needs neat EO on them.

batecco: Hi Doctors, hi everyone. Just for the records (as it's part of my daily job, fyi).  When you see those beneficial herbal ingredients listed as, for example, "Argania spinosa kernel oil" this is how it reads: Botanical name of the plant + part of the plant used + type of end product after processing (in this case: oil derived from the processing of Argan seeds' shell).

saaz frenvis: Thank you for this. I saw videos bashing tre Semme. And although I didn't believe them, i was still on the fence. Thanks for easing our minds. And please keep talking about the disinformation being spread on internet.

Holly Bronwyn: I have a question about shampoos of today VS the '70s & '80s when our hair smelled and looked amazing. Look at crowds from those days and tell me how/why so much shine!?! Plus, the fragrance did last longer in our hair compared to today where it washes right out from most products. (i prefer great smelling hair.) Was it at least partially the hydrolyzed animal protein? I see now they do use plant protein, which is preferable to me. thanks, guys.

Tara: Struggling with hair loss-I have had biopsy (inconclusive results), nizoral, steroid oil, cerave, minoxidil, red light, PRP, ketaconazole, spironactone, steroid injections in scalp, hormone testing, allergy testing and remedies, changing my diet, and so many different vitamins. Im probably forgetting something. I’m still losing so much hair I now have to wear it up to hide the thin layer on top and in the front. I’m running out of style to hide it because it’s so bad now. My scalp also gets inflamed. This has been for over a year now. Any suggestions?

Christie Robinson: Many of us are relieved after seeing this video. My husband has been using Tressume for 5 years. He has a full head of thick hair at 44 years old. Hey, I was thinking that you guys should do a "Lets Pretend this happened to a dermatologist " series. It would be a full step by step video on the AM and PM routine with treatment for melasma, then a video on Rosecea, then a video on acne, severe sunburn, etc. Lets face it people want to know the specific products and treatment that YOU would get.. this in turn makes it simple for someone experiencing that condition. PLEASE!!

Shreya Kotak: It's actually causing extreme hair loss. Experienced by many mates and family members as well

Michelle Silva: Yes! I stopped using this brand a long time ago. I've noticed so much hair was falling out

Quran Tutor: I previously saw another YouTube highlighting this as a bad shampoo and saying that it also has a lawsuit. Thanks for clearing this for me.

Akemi Tsukino: Maybe you can help me figure this out. I used Ogx for years. At some point, I noticed that I was losing a lot of hair when showering, brushing, etc. Also, my hair just felt thinner when I put it in a ponytail. Then I found out about the lawsuit, and stopped using it (use Renpure now). Since then I lose much less hair. I didn't have any other symptoms, so what might have happened here? Thank you!

Tejal P: Hair products are as important as skincare products- hoping you guys can do a video on hair care routine, hair oils, hair masks, etc.

Pauli Halvorson: Inky or Inkey decoder site? What? I can’t even spell it! Haha! Thanks guys…your intelligence, knowledge of products, care and concern for us astounds me. Keep up the fan-tastic videos!!

Malik is a flower boy: I Love Tresseme!! It's been around for So many years & used to be sold in Salons like Paul Mitchell! Fantastic products!

Christian: You 2 are just the best! Such a great education for us all.

Lady Diamond Priscaton of Northendshire: Not only do I use a bootie of tea tree oil in my daily scalp and hair care but most of my hair and body products contesting tea tree oil in it. I'm an oil lover, I use it in most of my skin care products. Basically I use water and oils the most, followed by creams and butters. Not a fan of milks but I am willing to try. Edit: I forgot to add, the only reason I stopped using Tresemmé (and most other shampoo brands) is that my hair doen't need as much protein as other people might. I get my protein from my oils.

CC Alexander: I used some shampoo from Ulta with coconut in it I think. My hair was coming out in clumps. Weird thing was I got a perm around same time using it. Thoight it was the perm. Ended up being the shampoo !

Jasmine K: Would love to see a video on skin care routine for people with prominent facial dermatitis! I have commonly seen a bunch of product recommendations and do's and dont's, but never a proper skincare routine regime

Bonnie Stay: I love you guys! Thanks for this shampoo video. I love TRESemme and I will definitely buy this.

Shruti Borge: Thank you so much for this video. I just bought the same shampoo and recently saw some rumours about DMDM Hydantoin. I'm so relieved after watching this video.

Drache Mitch: Shampoo is on the hair for such a short time, and there’s such a small amount of beneficial ingredients in these shampoos (because those are the ingredients that cost the most), you’re better off making sure that’s our products are free of harmful ingredients, or ingredients that are harmful to the environment LIKE SULFATES!

ppal_gan: It would nice to see a video about the discard/expiration date after opening beauty and make up products. Like how true/strict it is and whether you can you use beyond that 3mo to 24/mo window depending on how often you use it or what kind of product it is. Not sure if you already have a video on that.... I've always been curious about it especially with beauty YouTuber amassing and displaying so many products in their shelves.

Joan Kelly: Thanks for this. I think the word out there is to not over “proteinize” your hair for risk of fall out. Is that a thing ? Too many protein rich products which add shine, manageability and reduce frizz are supposed to “fall” into the hair fall out category. Is this true ?

Anna D: Another great video, thank you. Question, why are so many types of cleansers and oils, etc. used in one product?

Henna Khan: I like ur videos. Very informative. For myself, i have noticed that L'Oréal shampoos are very strong for my scalp. I get irritation and flakiness but with Pantene I experience mild symptoms of irritation over the time. I don't know which particular ingredient cause those symptoms.

Sir Ramsay: Love it! I hope you will do more content about hair care! For example, what are your top shampoo/conditionner? What do to, what not to do? Etc. :D

Maliha Salim: What do you think about people saying Sulphate is not a good ingredient to have in shampoos? The promotion of Sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners?

J J: INCI decoder has been the best resource I’ve used for skincare for the last couple years. Great info - thank you!

Ishrat Jahan: Hey guys, can you please do a video on Vitiligo? There are many of us who have this condition but there isn't a lot of information regarding this topic. I would genuinely appreciate it

Erica Rice: Dr. Shah and Dr. Maxfield: please talk about Devacurl next! I really enjoy your videos: they're always informative and interesting. Thanks. :)

Christine Cho: Dr Shah: Reading ingredient labels in bath Me: Pretending to be a dolphin.

Royal: ON AIR: I experienced this with their Silky Smooth formula… It hurt like hell.

Mandy Mukozaka: The point you made at the end about how many of the ingredients companies have substituted parabens with can actually be more harmful is such an important one. Making a stink about harmful ingredients is important, but when viral topics are misinformed and ultimately false, it can actually make things worse for us as consumers. Never thought about it that way. Thanks for the work you do!

Iniya Raj: Tresemme increased my hairfall, I don't know if dmdm hydantoin is the culprit or something messed up about their making process. I have tried other shampoos with dmdm hydantoin but they didn't increase my hairfall.

shicadelic: Does anybody remember the DEVACURL scandal? There were also claims that thousands of people lost hair due to their curly hair products. What happened? Was there ever a lawsuit? I just know that devacurl was killed by cancel culture

Jo Barkhuizen: I have a very sensitive scalp and found that most shampoos irritate my head with the acceptance of Tresemme.

Vero Rg: I didnt know about this lawsuit.. And for weeks Ive been almost crying cause im loosing a lot of hair and breakage thats something Ive never experience before... So Ive been using tresseme for about a month...
