CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ted (Ben Stiller) is disgusted when Mary (Cameron Diaz) borrows some of his home-made hair gel.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Farrelly Brothers set this romantic comedy in their home state of Rhode Island. In 1985, when teen-nerd Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) challenges a high-schooler who's bullying retarded Warren Jenson (W. Earl Brown), his concern prompts Warren's sister, the dazzling and desirable Mary Jenson (Cameron Diaz) to choose Ted as her senior prom date, a fact Ted's pals find hard to believe. However, on prom night, Ted gets his penis caught in his zipper, so the much-desired date never happens. Living in Providence and waxing nostalgic 13 years later, Ted hires Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to locate Mary, and the creepy private investigator finds her in Miami, where she lives with her tan-shriveled roommate Magda (Lin Shaye). After Pat develops a stalker-style fixation on the lovely, unattached Mary, he lies to Ted, telling him that she's now an overweight mother confined to a wheelchair. Employing professional eavesdropping equipment, Pat gathers a dossier on Mary's life and future plans, information that forms the basis for more lies when Pat begins dating her. Sure enough, Mary falls for Pat, although her friend Tucker (Lee Evans) is very suspicious of Pat's claim to be a Harvard-educated architect. Meanwhile, Ted learns the truth but continues to encounter offbeat obstacles as he accelerates to Miami in hopes of finding happiness with his true love. Former Modern Lovers singer Jonathan Richman vocalizes a narrative ballad of onscreen commentary in the Cat Ballou (1965) tradition. Most of the cast sings and frolics to Build Me Up, Buttercup by The Foundations during the closing credits.

Comments
jeanbrunma: When we went to the theatre to see this film, they were handing out packages of hair gel. We thought that was a bit peculiar until this scene and my wife and I just erupted in laughter. Not only because the scene was so awfully awkward, but because the promo people had the presence of mind to give us a single-use hair gel with Cameron Diaz on it as a reminder of the movie. It was just such a perfect form of promotion and advertising.
Dan Williams: Having seen this at the theater when it came out, it blows my mind that this movie has dropped into nearly complete obscurity. I mean, this movie was HUGE when it came out, and this scene was absolutely OUTRAGEOUS at the time. People were rolling in the theater like never before. It was a combination of shock and hilarity. It was really something, and you probably had to be there.
hoyit: It’s beautifully masterful how everyone involved was able to make this joke work. The timing of the reveal and the adorable look on Cameron’s face is what knocks it out of the park. One of the best comedic moments of all time.
KK Design Services: I went to see this movie with a old lady friend of mine. When this scene happened I thought she was going to hyperventilate she was laughing so hard. I mean hysterically. I later took a friend my age (35) to see it, and she was offended. I love old ladies who know how to laugh at life.
Devan Vieira: Ben Stiller is a master of awkward acting!
Andre's World: They shot Ben in the bathroom so well. You had no idea it was on his ear. It didn't feel like you weren't given a good view of every angle, even though they clearly hid his left side from view. Just great camera work and great body mechanics from Ben. Someone else on here said it, it is amazing how we have forgotten about this classic.
doug avila: I still remember the reaction in the theater. It just erupted in laughter and other reactions.!
James Gammage: Cameron Diaz as Mary- is the actress closest to capturing Marilyn Monroe’s special touch for comedy.
Sleuth Entertainment: This film was a classic of 90s american comedy and the best film of the brothers Farrelly, the film that finally made us fall in love with Cameron Díaz. The 99% of its gags couldn't be made nowadays
Jeff Hemmen: This is the movie I laughed the hardest at. I saw this when it came out in the theater. I had never laughed so hard in my entire life the first time I saw this movie
Joycie JD: I could not catch my breath when I first saw this....one of the funniest scenes I had ever seen.....
Buddyrebel Garcia: I remember when this came out I think I was 19 years old and the theater was lit at that time the whole movie everybody was laughing nonstop. Especially the zipper scene
brugglesby: The way he looks up at it and carries on a conversation just kills me!
NoMud NoLotus: I watched it when it first came out & it was HILARIOUS
Sharon Boo: I remember my friend's mom took a group of us 11-year-old girls to watch this in the theater and we didn't know what that was hanging from his ear, or didn't want to believe what it actually was.
devonferris: Best part of the movie I couldn’t stop laughing
Mil Millas: I remember when I watched this movie in the theatre when it came out. The laugh of the audience with this scene was so big that you couldn't hear anything for a couple of minutes.
Edz: This movie will forever be funny but ill never understand why she would use the hair gel like that to begin with lmao. Even if it was real hair gel the way she just swiped up on it without any regrets is hilarious. If it was hair gel she prolly wouldve gotten the same result the way she wiped up lol
Techno Samurai: I was 7 when this came out and did not get this reference. Now its hilarious!
Eric Caudill: Close your eyes and it sounds like Fiona (Shrek) & Alex (Madagascar) talking to each other
Rob Rix: Comic genius by Ben Stiller , every man's fantasy captured in his expression.
sj11791: Still such a famous scene. Hilarious!
BlueSofa: It' amazing how I came here remembering what happened in the theater and everyone in the comments are talking Bout the same thing! What an amazing movie
Roy Sherfan: I have no recollection of their conversation at the bar. It's as if its the first time I'm watching that bit, because now I'm on youtube and I could contain myself through the first bit (in the theatre I was falling apart gasping for air. So was everyone else - it was unlike any normal movie going experience). Everyone was laughing so hysterically hard, that entire scene at the bar was completely lost to the audience.
loveforeignaccents: What's with all the thumbs down... it was a hilarious scene!
NJGuy1973: In the theater, I was cracking up and cringing at the same time. A few weeks layer, I saw it again with some friends who hadn't yet, just to see their reactions. I was a Fine brother before YouTube.
CTangeloe: This scene inspired me to experiment with my own seman! at first i would mix it in my bowl of Bran Flakes in the morning then graduated into mixing it into my Oat Beverage (mixes in well) now i even bake with it. thank you ben stiller for an great movie -Benjamin Zeeboh Sr. aged 73
kimmyfreak200: "I'm tired of talking about stalkers lets talk about you" *chokes on drink*
JamesBond2608: Men sort of know how this feels. I don't think it's ever happened quite like this, but men have to search their entire body, looking for bits of fluid to clean. Sometimes they can miss some, and don't realise until later.
Alan Cook: I’m glad that she thought it was hair gel , not facial lotion .
ミIɳƚҽɾɠαʅαƈƚιƈ Sραƈҽ Kιƚƚҽɳ: I mean to be honest....it's holding pretty damn well. Lmao
Benratbag1997: If social media like Facebook had been invented and was a big thing around the time _There's Something About Mary_ was made, then Ted would've found Mary easily (if they both used it of course) instead of hiring a private investigator to stalk her. Then...End of the film
peperoncino: I love this movie
Eric Howry: Another very funny scene!!
V DOG: When would you even use someone's extra hair gel on their ear?
Drugz Munny: Something doesn't feel entirely organic about how she reacted to the "hair gel." I don't think I would be like "OH SWEET, YOU GOT A BIG GLOB OF HAIR GEL HANGIN FROM YA EAR. IT'S MY LUCKY DAY"
CLASSY GARY : This lends a whole new meaning to “bed head” .
tom arnold: Decades after, we still trying to figure out how it can be done...
Don Winslow: Gotta love the money shot!
I'm just some Canadian guy and I say: Can you imagine watching this scene not knowing that it’s coming? No pun intended.
Nelson Cabrera: When I saw this at the movies the whole theater tried to laugh and gag at the same time. Sounded like a herd of cows giving birth.
Darito Flow: Cameroon Diaz is so beautiful, i love her.
Gurpreet Singh: Ben stiller should have done an ad for hair gel
kelvin sung: There’s something about Mary that drives men all crazy!
starbreaker: Farelly Brothers are great underrated ,brilliant funny movie .
lytee: Cameron is stunning :)
Raphael: I'm just gonna be honest here. I love gross out humour, but not when it's forced and doesn't make any sense, which is the case here. Even if it was actually hair gel, why would you take hair gel off someone else's ear and put it in your hair? If someone did that to me, I'd think they were crazy.
Luis Rodriguez: That’s crazy funny
Leo Serocifino: Hahaha i still remember this scene.
Harpreet Minhas: If you don't get this scene, you are not alone. She could have at least checked her reflection in the mirror before leaving, which I assume is the joke, she looks like alfalfa form the little rascals.
Timothy Gould Jr: Mary has that 80s hairstyle
Brandon Y: I love 90s movies
matthew mahony: "Hey hey hey, where is the gabagool?"
alohaforeveryone: i was 9 and saw this movie with my grandpa at the cinema...poor me
Michael End: Hillarious
Raymond Scott Behnoud: My uncle's an architect does that count
Krishna: funny to the core hahaha
Demetrius Hall: Ahh so this is where that family guy joke came from
Charles De Rosas: How can they keep a straight face with that hair? Lol
Solangela Lebron: LMAO!!
Sofia Laureano: An early work by the master... Cameron Diaz.
Robert Gill ( Robbie Gill ) And JOJOSIWA: My Favorite Movie
Stephanie Page: Will there be a sequel?
Esteban K: Hilarious!
Stevieblue boy 2: It’s bens face and the way he looks at her hair
animangafan342: Everyone focused on the "hairgel" Me here who noticed she's not wearing a bra
Romanes eunt domus: I didn't know I could use that as hair gel! I've been wasting a lot of money! And some other things...
Lindsay Hengehold: Funny movie :)
Supersonic: 20 years..., unbelievable.
Dickson Lipingu: Hahahaha I know that movie haha amazing
Robert Gill ( Robbie Gill ) And JOJOSIWA: My Favorite Movie theaters Ben Stiller
cdbsk: checking the ceiling lol
Andrew: So what actual substance in the movie did they really use to hang off his right ear?
Pablo Perez: espectacular y en idioma original no como el otro video trucho
Agnetha: Laugh out loud
cupknee: i just watched this movie and tbh if i was mary i would have sweared off of men for quite a long time. literally every man she got close to was a creep, murderer or lying and manipulative and all she did was… be a nice person??
علཻوٰ໑ٰش: Awesome
Cutie Katt: In Waiting For Huffman Catharine O'hara has the same hair. lol.
Sonny Roy: The actress Lin Shaye plays Magda. Mary. Magda. Lin. Mary Magdalene.
Cody Gruen:
Mmhmmm Yea right: Her hair looked better before
Ellen Suruy: Qual o nome do filme?
bellafaatiha: I love mary
retired: Says I'm nuts and get help. I'm used to people telling me this
Tim Daugherty: 20 years later Ted would be employed at CNN under the alias Jeff Toobin.
R Rod: The song in the background is i get the message by ivy... Good song
Vasav Krishna: But how did it get on his ear?
Mike R: hes not even wearing hair gel though
Manoel Ramos: I noticed a slipup. '' Gel " was not on his ear at 0:16 when we can see his left year.
