Using Color To Lighten Hair

I wanted a healthier, easier option than bleach to lighten my hair all over. using permanent color to lift is an awesome, but not heavily used option that i wanted to share! watch to see the application, and my results! p.s. wear gloves! i didn't when applying the color, and wished I would have!

also, sorry the lighting is different in the before and afters, i didn't want to apply color in my filming studio, for fear of getting it messy, but also couldn't film the "after" portion of the video in the kitchen because of the echo, so hopefully you can gauge the color difference regardless of the lighting.

one last thing i forgot to mention in the video: i always avoided applying the color/toner/bleach/purple shampoo on my pre-lightened ends. but, inevitably some color did spill over during the processing time, so... my ends lightened just slightly through the process. which i ended up loving. so.. happy accident i guess.

Today, we're gon na dye, my hair, I'm gon na - go from this to this, so I wanted to figure out a way to lighten my hair without using bleach. So I had my hair before had this top part was all my natural hair that had grown in virgin hair, so I used color to lift my hair by pairing, a high level color so like a 9, 10 or 11 or 12. Those in the high range that are lighter technically than my natural color, which is about a 7 sorry. All of those technical terms are for those hairdressers out there, but basically black hair is 1 and blond. White hair is a 12. Well, it's more like a 10. Technically, but there are colors that are like 11s and 12s to help lift you to those super bright white colors. So you figure out where your natural color is within that scale and then from there you can lift your hair with color if it is, if there's no pigment already on the hair, so color doesn't lift color as a rule of thumb across-the-board like it. Just won't. Do it, meaning, if you already have color on your hair, color, isn't gon na lift through that? The only thing that will is traditionally bleach so for me, because I hadn't colored my hair. I could lift my hair with color, so I got some color found out. The formulation that I wanted to use it was a mix of a 10 and a 12 with ashy undertones to kind of counteract the warmth that comes whenever you're lifting hair, because that just happens regardless. So I got some color and then I did the first thing that I did was a test strip. So basically, what that is is taking a small section of hair in the lower back portion of your head, where it isn't going to be super visible in case the results turn out terrible mix up a small amount of the formulation that you're planning on using and Apply that to that section, let it process for the full time wash it out to be able to see how your hair reacts to a new color. You can see in the footage here. I just got a section of hair from the back lower portion of my hair. I had my husband apply the color and then rinse that out after I had waited the full 40 minutes for it to process after I saw the results, and I was happy with that - I went ahead and applied that same formulation. Obviously, a new batch because 40 minutes later the color is not still going to be good. It'S going to have oxidized, so I mixed up a new batch and applied that to all of my head where I had virgin hair previously. So I was avoiding applying it on my ends so that I could leave those and not lift them any further or damaged them any further, because the lightness of my hands was already good. So after I did that I let it process for the full 40 minutes and when I washed it out, you can see here that it was very orange. It was very gold and not necessarily exactly what I was going for. So I knew I needed to tone it next. I mixed up my toner and I applied that to all of the areas that I had lifted at the night before once again trying to avoid getting any color on my ends. The exact formulas are going to be written in the description box below for the colors that I used both to light in my hair and to tone my hair. So both of those are done in the description box. You can check them out, but anyway, so I applied that toner and let that process for about 30 minutes and then wash that out. You can see right here how, when I was blow-drying it how that turned out. I was much much happier with the results after it was toned. It kind of brought that brassiness down brought a little bit of that shine down and made it look a little bit more natural and not so artificial. When I washed it out, I was really happy with the results, but I realized that I wanted a little bit more dimension and lightness around my face. So I don't have footage of this because I applied it actually at my salon - and I don't take my camera with me to the salon. But you can see, especially when I go like this and pull my hairs flat, that I have like a foil right here and then I also have two more around my face. I just put three foils in my hair. Going with my cart, so you know it continues all the way for this whole section, but there isn't any of that blonde color, underneath this is that this is the same color that it had told me to, but all it is was just taking foils or taking A section like this, we doing a really fine weave, so I'm not chunky at all going like this and then foiling that up and I tried to get no bleach on my ends. I did need to tone that with purple shampoo, so all I did was I took those same sections, this portion of my hair and applied purple shampoo, which, if you haven't heard of I'll link it in the description box below, but it's basically just purple, pigmented shampoo And there's no developer or it doesn't have any like lifting properties to it. It just has enough purple pigment to kind of cancel out some of the brassy undertones. So I applied that to that section on dry hair and let that sit and process for about 40 minutes. So it was there for a really long time and I didn't apply that through my ends or else it. What if my ends would have turned very lavender. So I just did that to that root section that was a little bit still brassy, even though I had lifted it with bleach in a foil the day before at the salon, and then everything else is just that color that I initially lifted and toned too. So I guess I should do a close-up, so you can actually see how it's working this purple, that you see the tint on my scalp, that's from the purple shampoo so like I said it was sitting on there a really long time and it stained my scalp As well as my hair, so you know that's what that is close up. I will show you guys the color that doesn't have that dimension, so this under part yeah. This is the color that it lifted without the dimension, and then these blonde pieces are the added dimension that I put in afterwards. So if you didn't want to do that step, you would get results like this. Oh, let me show you the back. My hair is super super thin and fine. Naturally, so it probably looks like I damaged the crap out of it, but I did it. This is just how my hair is. I don't think that it's more damaged. I don't think that it did anything negative up to my hair. My hair still has a whole lot of shine. It still seems really strong. It dries well. I'M really really happy with the results. I didn't want to make this video for you so that I could promote doing your hair at home. That'S not the point of this hair transformation, video. What I wanted to show you was that there are more than one option to lift your hair than just bleach. That you can use - and you can ask your hairstylist for alternate options like using color - to lift your hair, there's a lot of benefits to using color to lift, and I just kind of wanted to show you guys that there's another option out there in case you're Curious to me, it feels like it's a healthier option. It gives a little bit more of a natural result. It'S not going to be that bright white. You can tone it at the same time. If you mix it properly - and I will say you don't have to use color all over like I did, you could also foil with this same method, so it could be highlights, but using color instead of bleach anyway. Hopefully, you guys learned something or enjoyed this little hair transformation and all the steps that it took in order to get here. If you guys have any questions about this process or suggestions for future videos, then just leave those in the comments below. As always. Thank you guys so much for watching, and I will see you in my next video bye. That'S a lot more cycle!

JulianaHereOnEarth: Your hair looks fabulous! Such a beautiful tone, and I love the highlights you added

B Butterflysoul98: I have watched a million different vids on this process and this is EXACTLY the results I was trying to get and the process I wanted to use!! Great explanation!! Thank you!! Looks amazing!!

Iluv Merengue: I know this is 8 mo. old but you can eliminate the need of a toner if you: 1) leave the tint on an hour or even a little longer, high lift tints keep working for a long time. 2) Add to the tint/developer mixture an additive like ION's Ash Intensifier (blue) which counters the orange beautifully.

Marie: The combination of hair color worked on you because you are, as you said, level 7 naturally. If you apply this formula on a hair level 1,2,3 (black hair) it will get lighter but with orange reddish tones, toner won't work properly in this case. At the end you had to use bleach (foil) around your face to create dimension. It looks very nice.

Sierra Beamer: this is stunning! I love that we have the same color hair and freckles so i could see how something would go more warmth and toning. what do you recommend for people who have reactions to toners? like I got a terrible color and cut yesterday and my scalp is on fire.

Janet Simental: Thank you for your honesty and information your hair looks great

Wendy: Love this new subscriber here and love the way you showed that color on virgin hair can be done!! Thanks again beautiful hair

J. C.R.: Thought there was hope for me. I'm a level two. Right now I have a light blonde balayge and my roots had like 3 inches of regrowth, should've given your method a try but I'm suddenly getting lots of grays and I mixed up a batch of a lighter brown to cover my roots.

Marilyn Grace: Thank you, your hair looks good! And you are so pretty ☺️the minute : 4:08

chel chel: Beautiful hair!

Emma Johnson: I love the final results on your hair. Also I prefer your natural look rather than your made up look.

J V: This came out wonderful The only thing I would have added is 1-2 diagonal foils behind the ear to break up that depth. Love how this turned out, and the highlight placement in the front is money

Denise Gasparini: Omg your hair is the perfect color. I’m at the begging of the video so I hope you don’t change it

M Nunyabusiness: It came out beautiful! Not everyone need a to be bleached out blonde, very pretty color ( s)

Streamlined Nails: Looks gorgeous

All Lies BStrong: I learned something that you said that wouldn’t work for me in the past but, will now. Thanks

Chafia Ben: I love it ! ❤️

Grace Ress: Love it !!!!

J F: Wonderful explanation great video keep making more you are beautiful

J F: Your video helped me a lot thank you

pet: I know this is a hair video and love how your hair turned out, but you have beautiful eyes!

Kristy C: That red lipstick looks beautiful on her! I wonder what brand/shade that is

Chantelle: I wonder why your test strand looked good but didn't turn out the same when you did your whole head? Do you think your formula was not exactly the same proportions as the test?

Lavender Fae: my hair is naturally dirty golden blonde and I've never dyed it. will this work to lighten my hair?

Kelley McDaniel: Should someone with fine hair use 10 volume developer or 20 for toning?

Gimmeachance: Very, very nice ! I like the lighter streaks !

Centrifugal Muse: Gosh your hair is beautiful!! And I love how you show your hair at the end without doing that stupid “doe eyes staring into traffic” face. Anyway great job!

Who Why: Omg that's an endless process.

Salty Bear: 11 and 12 are just translucent colours that appear light but 10 is the highest on the scale - technically.

Lisa Hatfield: Shades eq is the best toner in my opinion!!

Info White Palm Villas: Thank you. I have had a toner applied to my hair. Can I still uplift?

crackerjack4u: Your hair looks really pretty, and really natural. What ratio did you mix the Redken EQ (9V and (9T in? Was it half and half of those 2?) Did the test strand you did beforehand lighten even more after you reapplied the color to it, or did you not reapply color to that area again? My virgin roots are actually a light-med grey, Probably a level 8 in the front and on the sides, and a level 6 on the crown and in the back, LOL I'm not sure why the back part is growing in so much darker, but it is), and my hair is bleached to platinum blonde, so I'm really considering trying to lift my roots with a highlift color, instead of bleach and see what happens. I'm also wondering if adding some Ardell drops to the mixture could help eliminate any gold or red tones that might be pulled through. I'm not even sure they could be used with Hi-lift color or not? What's your thoughts on this? What color combination do you think would be best to help blend grey roots with my platinum hair? (I do plan on using the hilift on all my hair once I get my roots lightened enough. Do you think it will work on grey roots?

Melissa Coburn: You did a good job generally purple shampoo is for mantinece

Phoenix Airbender: Color Does lift color...it removes color to a certain degree without the damage of bleach & I know this because I have done it many times instead of bleaching a clients badly damaged hair, which in turn saved her hair from falling out and giving her the blonde she desired with a toner afterward. There are Many "old tricks" of the trade that hairdressers today know nothing of, however, us older hairdressers know them and still use them. There are also a few tricks to use to save hair from damage before and after bleaching or coloring hair too, yet these tricks I keep close to the chest....they go back as far as my mothers days of being a hairdresser (may she r.i.p.) and I don't divulge them because those are the ones that make me money when clients are desperate.

LadyMarija: Gorgeous

love you: I love it

GLAM ft Mamasdolly: Okay but what can we used on the ion color to fix that ??!

jessie neesmith: Awesome I love that you did an awesome job also a hairdresser a friend in Georgia

Nash John Jr vlogs: Hello I'm a natural 7 and got my roots hi lifted. I was just wondering if they are suppose to use 40 developer? (Always hear 40 developer is damaging especially on the roots) but there was no bleach used, just hi lifted. Thanks!

Name Bmw: You need take only 12 colour, because 10 is not so strong and light. The most light color is 12 + 40 developer

jessica M: I am not a professional but this helped

why just why: So I just bleached and toned. I used old developer and not enough product so now I want to do this but I am not sure if it will work. I have orange at top and some grey throughout thx to the violet additive toner

Mary Cupano: Yes, very good,,, been doing this for many years,

DelilahZoe: Why do you think your test strand lifted MORE than your all-over application? Did you wrap the test strand, but not the all-over application? I'm guessing that was the difference. :)

Judy Cervizzi: Where do you get the 9T and 9v Redken  toner?

Hypohair: Sorry am I misunderstanding you but you say using no bleach but you list 40 vol peroxide? Looks gorgeous by the way.

Sarah Yoder: You are SO pretty!!!!

꽃bachi: I need help! I never understood the real color of my hair, its a really ashy ashy dark blonde/brown and my natural hair with bleach NEVER turns orange, so can i lift with color?

3 Moon: 40 vol is bleaching and toner after But nice color!

Mike and Mom: So you DID use bleach! Looks good tho

My friends call me K: Very good job

Little Bo Peep Cattery: Lift = Bleach and Lighten = Bleach

No more War!: why did the test strand area look great and not brassy and the roots turned brassy? Did your hubby seal the test area in glad wrap or foil? Usually when we seal color in foils etc it turns lighter and processes better etc.do u think that's what happened lol I hate when it happens.love this vid anyways and subbed. cheers :)

M: Can anyone tell me what the ratio of toner to developer is? I need to get orange brass out ASAP!

Claretea: how do you mix your redken shades eq with the toner? I got some and want to do a demipermanent.

stray novel: When you said your salon did foil, what does that mean? Highlight color? What color did thry use? Or was that bleach?

R & B XL: What vol you use??

West G: You are gorgeous

Christine Konkle: Is the purple shampoo only a good toner for blonde? I do my own hair color (, I know) and I color it darker than my natural. I usually alternate between medium brown & medium auburn because if I have too much virgin root any auburn pulls really orange. I want the reddish of the auburn, but not a glowing orange! I've never thought about trying a toner of some sort, I thought only using ashy shades could counter it but they would also counter the red I do like. My natural hair color is probably an 8, I color to a 4-5.

Lisa Hatfield: Brave lady with no gloves!! You hands probably had some stains.

Khadija Khadija: You left bleach for how long on your hair plz ?

Denise Gasparini: I always thought blonde hair color had bleach in it. No?

og jenny: I just stumbled on your video and it looks like you lightebed your face, as well

Cheryl alexes: So you ended up using bleach

queen 7: Anyway, you end up using bleach to get this color...

Amina Amina: C'est quoi la marque de toner svp.

Pamela C: Which 12 Igor is a beige blonde. Thank you

Lizandra Nunez: Where can I buy those product for do it at home?

Imelda Altamirano: Red color lipstick i love it ....whats is it name please ????

sunday arispe: I have black hair i dyed it a clor of brown,, after a month i dyed my hair natural bkonde, and now i wanna go lighter can you please help me??

Jennie Blaze: You look like the actress Busy Philipps. :)

Xena Nymph: I don’t see formula that you used

Melody of Psalm 94: Your hair looks great, but WAY too dark lips! Your lips are beautifully full, so the red is WAY too overdone. All you see is lips....nothing else! Sorry!

Fred LeBlanc: You're calling this a "healthier" option, but using 40-volume developer and leaving it on for 40 minutes... smh... You could have used bleach and a 20-volume developer for the same amount of lift with even less damage. Bleach isn't scary or difficult if you know what you're doing. *shrug*

Nuzhat Mahmood: Your lip color is very nice....tel brand plz???

vegasromano: lol she used bleach

Doodie Evans Henagan: Great job.........I think the red lipstick makes your lips funny looking......you have nice lips so a lighter & softer color will be gorgeous!

Tessa Luijben: I was orange too, panic!! your head is still purple, you need to wash better.. :p

MARIELA FLAVIA GIMÉNEZ: Oooh no hay traduccion

Brittany Morris: I stopped watching as soon as I heard the word bleach ‍♀️

Angie K: I can't believe I didn't' read the comments first. You did use peroxide so it isn't without "bleach". Why would you not just be up front?

Amber Barretto: Way to work yourself outta a job posting how to do it yourself!

Deborah Moore: Why are you using 10 volume with the Shades EQ instead of the dedicated developer?

Yours Truly: Ok explaining sounds so Confusing

Jennifer Mossbarger: 111

Yami Be: Iiihi giiii giiiuy

kalima Tayyeba: Don't make your lower lip big when you put lipstick especially the red
