Thanks for watching!

Hi everyone welcome back to my channel and in today's video we are going to talk all about my absolute favorite and best color formulations for both color Corrections and great coverage and, of course, on my channel. I'Ve talked a lot about bleaching and toners and the best ways to get the best blondes, but I've never done like a dedicated video just about colors and color formulations for each individual kind of scenario. So what inspired this video is the still Z number of questions and messages I get daily, showing me pictures like this of reddish brownish, brassy Browns, and they telling me that they've used a purple shampoo and that it's not working - and I have touched on this in The past, in that a toner will not tone a brown hair, so this video is to correct that and for that, what you need is a color that has great amount of background color, which means it's not just going to lift the hair. It'S actually going to have a good amount of deposit and as well. This is what you need to cover gray hair. I think it clients at the salon that say, like you know, I've been getting my hair colored for years at this other salon and I always feel like my gray comes back or even when I leave the salon. I have a gray that I can still see like around my face or anything like that and often times it's, that the level is right, but the color could even come down to the color brand is just it's not right for great coverage, so I'm basically just Gon na go over a various of scenarios and what colors I prefer to use to fix these problems. So I'm gon na start with the most obvious, and the most asked on my channel is how to get rid of these ugly reddish-brown, unwanted kind of brassiness. In brown hair, so I'm just going to use this example here of one of my clients. This is what she came in with with really, as you can see, really reddish tones in her brown hair and again I do have to say this as a disclaimer. I'M not in any way saying that reddish-brown hair is ugly, I'm talking about unwanted redness and brown hair, because we've been down that road before so. It'S obviously for it. This client, I ended up giving her some balayage pieces and for that I used a light nur in foils, but what I ended up using for her base 1/2 ounce of 6 and a and 1/2 ounce of 8 na - and I absolutely love the redken cover fusion. The fact that its cover fusion is amazing for grey coverage, also for me, it's the absolute best for really covering and removing those reddish brown tones, and so the N stands for neutral and the a stands for ash. Absolutely love that the end comes first, because that means that there is a ton more of neutral tones. Then there are ash tones and obviously we definitely need the ash tones to counteract they, the red tones. You always want there to be enough. Do Trull tones in that formula as well, because that's what's going to make it long-lasting color. So, as you can see her after it's a beautiful, neutral ash color where it looks like you know she, this could have been her natural base and of course there are other brands out there, but you can get that basically same number same formula, but in my True honest opinion I feel like nobody has as good of neutral and ash tones and red condense and as a blonde specialist as many blondes as I do, I'm doing their base color and I always rely on the cover fusion to really give me those foolproof great Coverage color blends. Another thing that I get asked a lot too, is for say, clients that do come in with you know: lots of gray, maybe over like 50 percent or at least over 25 percent of the hair. That is gray and they come in and they have really dark base like a little for level 5, which is this here and they you know, they'll have like some highlights in it and they say I hate my dark face. I would love it to be lighter, but my last hairdressers said that, in order to cover the gray, we need to go really dark and, as a hairdresser, I absolutely hate hearing that, because that is not true. Obviously you can cover gray with light blonde, and the answer is: if you have good quality color. Yes, you can't, you can cover gray, hair with, say a level seven and that's where the 7nn is my absolute go to for someone that has a lot of gray. But still wants to have a pretty light base, so if you're wanting to cover gray and the client wants a much darker base, then obviously that's easy but, like I said, if you want something lighter the 7nn, also by the cover fusion line, is absolutely my go-to. For the last I don't know how many years and the fact that it's n n, that means that there is a double of the neutral to kind of just simplify how to basically raid that a color level. The seven obviously is the level and then the double n means that there's going to be extra coverage. So when doing greys, you always want to stick with the end end line alright and now. Moving on to my go-to colors, for when I went to dark and hair, but not necessarily tones what to darken the hair or make the hair richer by richer and deeper, that normally means more warmth. More warmth means more golden tones, more reddish tones, it's the complete opposite of what I was showing you with my previous client. This is when we want to add reds. We want to just make the color look really rich and of course I can do that with other levels of the color fusion line, but my absolute favorite go-to, for that is the Redken color gels, and I know that on my channel, you guys have seen me Talk about them, and that is just because of their versatility and just how easy they are to use so the red can color gels are a liquid permanent color, which we are normally not used to anymore, because normally, when we think of a liquid color, we are Thinking about toners and semi-permanent colors, but this is a liquid color, but it is permanent. So any time I have a client come in that once like a beautiful like burgundy like whiny color, almost I always reach for the color of jealousy. I just feel like the warmth um from the color gels is somehow like seep into the hair and deeper, and just give you that more, like really vibrant and beautiful Reds. Of course not only the Reds they make beautiful neutrals as well. I'Ve definitely bumped bases with this as well. That means that when say you're like blonde - and you have like roots kind of going out - and all you want to do is lighten that root, but not really change the rest of the hair. These are great for that. As well also, if I have a client that is going from blonde to brunette, I absolutely love to fill with these. First, obviously, with the color gels, you can do neutral tones as well. You can do a sheer tones with color gels, of course, and vice versa, with the cover fusion. You can also do warmer red tones, but just for me just anytime that I need something that is going to be darker and that really really just locks in that color and gives you like extreme shine. I definitely go for these and when I really really just want those beautiful like neutral kind of cooler tones, I reach for the cover of fusion and, of course, always keeping in mind that when using the color gels, if you do have to mix that with the Color gels a developer, so I know that every formula that I've mentioned here today is obviously a professional formula. I know that a lot of my audience are di wires and you know are here and what to try some of this on their own. The formula is pretty universal and you can absolutely get these colors in a different brand. Obviously, each brand is going to have their own little tweak on the color and, like I said for the formulas that I just went over, I obviously do prefer I can for these things. Like I said, I went to a Red King affiliated school and it's what I was trained in and what I personally like to use on my hair and obviously on my clients anyway. I hope this video was helpful. I know that not everyone that is watching my channel is here for just blonde coloring, so I hope that this has helped a new range of you guys. If you guys still have any questions, please leave them down below and I'll see you guys in the next one bye.

S. M.: I've really come to trust your advise on all things hair related, Sylvia. I hope you can do a similar video on how to banish red-toned hair on brunettes, with a video describing and demonstrating the same as above, but just an easy brunette transition from red/brassy brown to a more neutral to ash brown look (without it looking so blond). Thanks! :)

bo jangles: Thank you for addressing gray hair coverage. So funny because I was going to ask you if you could do more videos on over 50 to 100 percent gray. I have always been able to diy my hair since I was a teen but now at 54 and about 75 percent gray and resistant white around my face and ears it's been a challenge. Thank you! Love watching your videos!

Cookie 🏴‍☠️: Thank you sooooo much for these awesome tutorials! I now feel that I can properly direct my stylist. I have always been told that I had to have dark roots to cover my grey, which I always hate. So glad to know its not true. Please do more videos on what women with a lot of grey can do without actually going grey

Sylvia: The orange to blonde color correction you did looks amazing! I have a few questions if you can answer that would be great! So did you bleach the hair and then apply the redken combination? Secondly instead of the 8na+6na, can I mix equal portions of 8n, 8a ,6n, and 6a to get the same result as the 8na+6na combination? And lastly, do you recommend toning the hair afterwards or leaving this as is. Thank you so much!

ben knowles: I love how your straight to the point and very informative, no messing around with you!:)

Oneida Juarez: After watching your videos for years and reading all the comments I will be trying the redken permanent line for the first time. I love love the shades eq for toning but have never used the permanent line the double NN line or the creams . Thank you so much for Sharing your knowledge about these products. As a professional stylist it’s awesome to have you guys share with us all to help our clients look and feel their very best. Much love doll

Helen Worden: Whenever I want to do something to my hair I always look to your channel first. The problem for a lot of us who try to do it ourselves is we can't get hold of these products (not in the UK anyway) so it's back to the stores as usual!

Charissa: Thank you sweetie! What a blessing you! I am grateful for you! You take your time to help others who want to do their own hair, even though your a hairdresser! I think that's amazing! Thank you so much!!

Allyson Sixx: I went on ESalon & bought 2 of your product recommendations; the root lifter in blue bottle & that hair cuticle sealer sealer stuff in the pink bottle. Can’t wait to try them! I’m going over to Sephora now to buy some Olaplex

Jennifer D: Incredibly informative, as usual! Thanks so much for a great video.

ellebangs: as I mention towards the end - All brands make their own version of these products and the names are the same. So if Redken is not available to you, there are other options but like I've said a million times before, I do find that Redken gives hands down the best results and its the brand I have always chosen to work with at my salon. If you're covering greys at home - I honestly think your best solution is using eSalon - as I've mentioned in the past, their system is incredible for that: http://bit.ly/2aHruqR

kitkat97: Great advice! I love your blonde tones, what formula do you use? I normally use Redkens Shades EQ 9v with clear but I always feel like I can still see yellowy tones in my hair even after leaving it in for 20 minutes

dorotex86: Just like some other ladies here I find it a bit hard to believe that one colour (in this case mix of 6na and 8na) can neutralise so much redness. Was there any other trick you've used here? Or maybe it is down to the condition of hair or porosity? I am trying to achieve ashy level 7 for years and it's pretty much impossible. I'm lifting the tones which is about level 8 now and can't get rid of redness. Maybe you could do a video showing the process please?

Kimberly Gillott: Hi, I recently had my hair done with hi-lights and lo-lights with Redkin colors (1st time). I'm a licensed Cosmetologist (but I don't practice)so I typically do my own hair but wanted a treat for the holiday. The hairdresser put on a 6 and 7 for the low lights and unfortunately it was so dark, she had to use a color remover (mixed with water only) and it pulled a reddish tone, which I told her I turn brassy with bleach. My hi-lights turned white, I actually thought I had gray hair. Without going back to my hairdresser, I tried putting on lilac toner 1st then 7N to tone down the brassy look, did not work. The toner didn't even help with the white hi-lights. Any suggestions?

Virginia Garcia: Wow, what an amazing job you did with her hair! Can’t wait to go to your salon to get my hair done. ..I have a question, I currently use 7A Smokey ash medium for the base color, ( my hair has a lot of red undertones), it looks great but it doesn’t quite cover all the grays without leaving the color a long time. I want to try the combination you suggest with N as well and here is my question will that bring back some of the red undertones? I would hate that! Thank you so much, you are amazing!

Tiffany78D: Hi! How should I handle speaking to my stylist about me not being happy with my colour? My usual stylist just went on maternity leave so I went to see someone else at the same salon. I showed her a picture of the colour I wanted, but the colour I ended up with isn't really close to what I asked for - for the record, I showed her a picture of a bright neutral blond highlights/balayage, and ended up with something that looks kinda warm/orange at the root and mid-length, and my ends are very beige/ashy When I left the salon I wasn't sure about the colour, but it was night time and a little dark at the salon. It's since been a couple days and I've had a chance to see it in daylight and I'm not happy.

Cristiann Milano: Always enjoy your videos! Do the double pigments in Color Fusion give you darker results? I have been using Schwarzkopf for many years and their double pigments deposit darker than what you would expect from the level on the tube. I am trying to get away from Schwarzkopf and would like to get as many tips on the Redken line as possible. Thank you!!

Kathie f: What type of everyday shampoo would you suggest for grey hair? I've been letting my hair naturally go grey and I've noticed it's a different texture

Kristy Sloan: Hi! Love you and love how clearly you speak! What did you use to tone the blonde with the 6na/8na cover fusion base?

Aries: I made my stylist watch one of your videos... You've truly saved my hair twice. Thanks :)

Elaine Lee: Hi. I have dark brown hair (4n) and merlot byalage. I know in a few weeks the brassyness will appear despite best efforts (sulfate free products). No one has any videos on toning that out to get the vibrant color back. Looking at the color wheel, I think I am supposed to go with green to neutralize the brassy color. Can you do a video on that. Everyone is doing BLONDE but us brunettes need help too!

E. E: Can you please suggest which volume developer should be used to use with the 6n and 8n mix

Syl Guerrero: Love this ! Thank you for such an informational video.

MeLinda Allen: Hi, great video. Question though I've toned too much if the warm blonde and it's now looking a little gray, would you recommend cleansing with a clarifying shampoo or another concoction? I'm going for a pale champagne cool blonde..thanks!

Colleen Leonard: I would love a video on how to get the best air dry (when you maybe don't have access to a blow dryer). I find that when I let my hair air dry, whether I braid it or leave it alone, it always feels "flat" against my scalp and gets oily much faster. Any tips to get an air dry with a bit more lift at the roots would be amazing!

SGriffin: Hi! For the first example when canceling out orange/ brass — how long did you keep it on and what level developer did you use? Did you mix the 8NA & 6NA in the same bowl?

Brooklyn Rae Greig: Informative video, thank you ellebangs! Love your client's hair, you did a phenomenal job! When you used 6NA and 8NA as a base did you do it all over their head? Including over top of the lightened/foiled sections?

Elizabeth Ardalan: I would like to see a video about hair accessories. I think I severly damaged my hair for years by constantly wearing my hair in a ponytail and wearing the wrong hair accessories. I thought it was the bleach and toner causing damage, but I now I'm pretty sure it was the everyday ponytail and poor quality rubber bands. My hair is finally growing after years of uneven hair, no longer than ear length on the sides, and the back not growing past 5".

Eevee Rea: My natural hair color is a light/medium ash brown and I’ve ombré my hair and it made it really orange and red and I’ve tried everything but I’ll try this ❤️

Wendy D: Sooo helpful! I don't know if someone has asked this but is the Coverfusion color you used on your first client demipermanent or permanent? Thank you!

Marie Marin: What do you recommend to brighten your blonde color? I feel like my blonde is a little too ashy and it makes it look dull.

Bianca: Could you make a video all about hair color formulation ? Love how Informative you are!

HoydenMonika: When i dye my hair 1-2 tones lighter my hair becomes really yellow after some time. What should i do to prevent that?

MsAimTube: This is soooo helpful, thank you from Jacksonville Florida! I needed the 6na and 8na info for my next appointment because they keep getting it wrong! May I please ask what you used for her lightener on the balayage? That is a beautiful blonde color and my techs don’t seem to be able to get mine that light. I would appreciate any advice, since I can’t make an appointment with you ;-)

Alicia Godwin: Thank you for your videos and sharing your knowledge with us! I have an off topic question about your chelate video. Can this be done before using Olaplex that I got from Sephora? Thanks!

Rose C: Thankyou for your videos. Did my hair on pre highlighted hair and your tips helped.

Sandra Taboada: Hello. Ive been to a couple of hairdressers asking for a hair colour change from red ish/brass only on the ends to soft baby blond lights. They took a sample and said my hair will never go to any shade of blonde because of my hair nature. Apparently it has red tones that won't let it happen? What do you think?

Tara Norman: I've bleached twice and still can't lift the final red orange sections! I will bleach again but might give up on going back to white and put a medium blonde dye over. Thanks for your videos they help a lot. X

Crystal 1080: I had hoped to hear more about the process of getting the red out of brown, like showing. I am not a fan of that as my dark hair anytime it lightens is this and I want something other than this!!!! I like how you used two colors BTW

TC Topcat: You held up the 30 volume developer. Is that the level you use with the Color Fusion or does it vary?

Jessica FB: For the first example, did you use a 30 volume or 20 volume developer for her 6NA/8NA base?

Jakeyboy: I’m curious why did you use 8 NA & 6 NA half oz of each instead of using just a 7 NA? By the way I am absolutely Loving your videos!!! You are Amazing at giving good and very helpful info!! Thx so much! Donna from AZ

Anna Belinda Gonzalez: I have been watching your videos I am about 80% grey I have had used medium brown and finally decided I want to go really light so that I can stop the coloring. I bleached my hair it did get brassy, i tried a medium ash even a light ash and had some change. Between some gold blonde still a little brass. I just don’t want to go darker because of my grey hair. Any suggestion, I did it myself because I have been to salons and end up in the same boat. I guess what I am trying to do is getting as close to my grey as possible, so that it can blend with my grey and I don’t have to color my hair often as when I had my dark hair. Which I had to do my greys every 3 weeks. Thank you

Sabrina Stovall: This video helped me so much !!! love ya sylvia !!!

Rebe RoMiMe: Thank you so much for your priceless tips.

zyglinda perez: Can you do a video explaining how to bump the root without looking it brassy! What developer would you use and what color?

A B: Good tips beautiful! How would you recommend I tone my hair between salon visits. It's a level 6 neutral but starts to pull orangey red and looks Auburn by the time for a touch up and I hate that. How could I tone my 6n hair?

Vanessa Smith: Thank you. It’s so helpful!

Lynn Rose: You did a really good job on that person's hair. Well done.

Fabiana Porto: Thank you so much for showing us the colours options...but is missing the application of it...please .like the 7NN Only on the roots and foil in between??With the 6 and 8 on the root and foils in between after processing time would you tone the highlights???

ChrisZennNYC: Excellent talk on sharing your professional knowledge. I am going thru reddish color and cannot obtain that pretty blonde highlights on my brown base color since my last color treatment. I need to find a color specialist in my area of NYC using Redken specialized products.

Claire and Abby Love: WHAT DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR LIPS , and what did you use for the tone you have in your hair ? Thanks

Nicole Turk: Hi... I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on the Redken 7nn. I have been using 6nn cover fusion but the color becomes so dark. I have white hair that cover majority of my head. Started at 16, I do see my stylist once a month to tone and do my roots, however I’m a busy mom and I can’t afford to go every 2 weeks so I touch up the front at home in between my appointments. When I use anything higher then a 6 it looks a little orange. Should I use equal parts7nn with 20 volume? Thank for your help and formulas

Doreen Boyce: Hi Sylvia. So I have been using on my roots for at least 8 Year's now ion demi in the color lightest ash blonde 10 N A with one part clor 2 parts 10 developer. Lately when touching up my roots only leaving the color on with a shower cap and waiting about an hour. I notice brassieness. I am very confused why since I am only applying a demi. I then waited about 5 days and bought the Wella demi in the ash blonde used the recommended cream activator 1to 2 ratio again and once again brassieness. Not sure what the to do to get the color without the brassieness mext time and what do you suggest I do to fix the problem? Thanks! I have been a fan since forever now!

Kempster King and queen: I am a professional colorist and I struggle with the gels for vibrant red. I have a client who wants that mahogany color what do yiu mix she is a level 5-6 with on her outgrown root area ends are foiled with different levels to give movement but it always seems dull. After about 2 weeks. Thanks for any advice

gym princess: Great video...I am also a Redkin fan! How do you feel about the new shampoo/cond. for brunettes that cancels orange/gold? Thanks!

Honey Beary: I'd love to see some tutorials on filling :). And doing reds :)

TheLilia7x: Do you apply those two all over hair after it's been lightened?

Nina Sherbet: Loved all your info, so much knowledge you have.

Amanda Cox: Do you have any information on where I can get a full Redken color line? Would I have to go through a company (Cosmoprof, Armstrong, ect?)

Marina Walsh: I use l'oreal majirel base 5 but my grey hair comes through in 2 weeks after being coloured so think I'll try that redken. Very informative vlog

Maria Bidwell: Can you do a tutorial with the first color correction you did on this video?

SkyWorks: What developer do you mix with the colorfusion and how much?

lamicho2005: On the first case you mention, why not use a 7na instead of mixing the 6na and the 8na? What would be the difference?

p y r u v i c a c . i d: Could you recommend some European based color brands? For some reason it's hard to get a hold of Redken color products, styling products are here loads, but the color products seem to be hard to find. I've tried to dye my hair with L'oreal Dia richesse 8.11 and 7.11 to get really cool and ashy but ended up with pretty warm hair. Do you have any other suggestions?

Abigail Monroy: This gave me hope for whenever I get grey hair! I was scared I was gona have to use Black always lol

Chi Ngoc: How much would you charge for highlights and regrows gray hair? Thank you.

madelaine: Ok, stupid question since I am not a professional. Would 7NN be something like a light brown or dark blonde? I’m looking for a very cool light brown. Nothing fancy. I just used 5A and it’s a bit too dark. It looks more like a medium brown. Like the coverage. Not redken brand though. Thanks for your videos

Scarlett Pereira: What volume developer do you use for the 7NN to cover gray?

Adriana Ramirez: Thank you soooo much for videos like these. You have taught me so much!!!!#cosmostudent

Tully Soulliere: Thank you Syvia fr your awesome work , i love Redken products also, just love your work and your heart!...thanks for being you doll. (O:

A F: Thank you for all the information!

Joan Gentile: What's the best way to color my hair, so it won't come out so dark all the time?? I'm 66 years old. I have gray hair underneath my dark hair. Thank you!

BigBrowneyes: @ellebangs so when you want to do the 7nn for darker hair base do you have to bleach first??

shannavandelden: Love your video’s! So the first cliënt got a new balayage and than got it toned again?? So What level was her hair After the balayage? Or Did you only lighten/balayage the upper part of the hair? (Sorry my englisch is Not that good). Thank you so much

Silvia Montanez: I learned a lot from you I want to thank you for everything Keep doing it

stephanie syckle: Could you do a video on how you use color gels to bump the base?

Brittany Alexander: I seriously have been trying to get my hair this ashy blonde color for months and every time my stylish tones it, it washes out first wash and turns more golden/brassy I use matrix so silver 1-2 weekly. Suggestions?! Thanks love

Tara C N B Pet Sitting: Beautiful result

Thea Andrine: I’ve bleached my hair and it now has both yellow tones and some orange tones in it. Will this work in my case?

xo xo: Thanks for the video. Just wondering, is it bad to brush your hair wet?

OMEN: Can you mix color lacquer 9na with coverfusion 7nn with 10 pro-oxide developer? no need for gray coverage just trying to rid orange/bass tones from a level 7/8 ish hair.

Straingelove: That’s what happened to me. She did a dark color on my roots to cover grey when I wanted to lighten my roots. If I do this at home next time can I go over the dark dyed part like will it lift or will I look like I have hot roots?

Hope Smothermon: I'm a stylist did you pull through and did you use a 20 vol. or a 10 vol.??? Love your videos

Tina Lindsey: omg!! I want this exact color on the model you did. I wish I could fly out to San Francisco for you to do my hair!! I have changed hairdressers SO many times!!!

Tracey Lynn: Great video Silvia! Would you have any suggestions for your DIY viewers on best brands of color AND bleach at Sally’s?

Claudia Espinoza: What developer do you mix it with?

Jessica T: I gasped when I saw the first example. That has been my hair for the last 10 years. Elle - you deserve a round of applause... wow. i cannot wait to do this...

Nrogan20: Omg! My hair is just like that first brassy one and I hate it! I want exactly what you did with her hair! I wish I could find a colorist like you.. do you have tips on how to find redkin color specialist in my area?

Evan Kootenay: love your hair color! can you share what formulas you used?

Lisa Shaw: How do you make the darker roots not brassy? I tried the toner you recommended and it worked on the blonde parts, but not the darker parts of my hair?

Jeanette Jacobi: Literally sitting with color on my grays right now. Wish I would've seen this 10min ago! we shall see

Sofia Mateo: Hi Sylvia, I just went to my salon for highlights. My stylist refused to lift my natural base color which is dark brown. I now have dark roots and very beach blonde and yellowish highlights.I was told to get a shampoo called no yellow, what would you recommend I do? I am unable to find the shampoo recommend by my stylist in stores.

Patty Levonaitis: Do you have a video that shows you highlighting and covering grey at the same time?

Keri's Corner: Hi, I'm wondering what volume developer you used on your client with the 6na & 8na?

kwood14023: Very helpful.

dms_25: I wish I be in the bay area and have you really do my hair... your knowledge of hair makes me comfortable. Your sooo beautiful Silvia! Keep doing what your doing!

jez Lizzy: I have a grey hairs and a brassy/orange highlights and I want to change it like ashy color and cover the grey hair. What am I gonna do first? cover the grey hair or toning first? and also from your video the Redken cover fusion 8NA and 6NA only mix together, nothing else? What's the perfect healthy toning to make it look like ashy color? thank you for your help.

stinkus: You say to use two dyes for brassy brunette, neutral and Ash. Do you do them separately? Or do you combine the dyes in one bowl?

Amanda Hollyfield: I could watch you all day. I love listening to your voice. Keep it up, can't wait for the next video.
